Wow. Sends me back. Stones 1st US concert and my 1st rock concert. June 5, 1964, Swing Auditorium San Bernardino, CA
Wasn't sold out crowd, far from it. But what a show. Mick, even back then, was not the best looking man in the room. But his sexual magnetism on stage was unbelievable. Almost more than a 16 year old could handle. Definite rock music icons. Thanks for the memory. And the insight into these guys.

I am a longtime fan of The Rolling Stones. I saw them live in 1997. One of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. There is no lead guitarist in this band, and the musicianship is incredible. My dad, who will be 92, very shortly, told me once that he thought The Rolling Stones were garbage. Later on, my dad told me that he saw The Rolling Stones on TV. I asked him what he thought of them. He said they were good. Thanks for sharing this analysis video. Cheers, Fil! ✌️

Ah, the strolling bones, I have loved them since my teenage days, (a long, long time ago). What a performer Mick is, and how well they all fit together. Unfortunately I have never had the chance to see them live, instead I either play them very loud or slip into a bit of karaoke now and then. Great analysis Fil, as always.

It was funny to hear Fil mimicking Mick’s accent since Fil sounds more posh than Mick does. Such a great song and a product of Gram Parson’s influence on Keith Richards. Interestingly the Stones gave the song to Gram to record on a Flying Burrito Brothers album that was released a year before the Stones version came out. Great to see Fil playing again so he can demonstrate the sweet guitar licks.

“Hopefully, fingers crossed, they’re not going to start auto tuning Mick Jagger”
Too late, Fil. Unless, of course you’re clinging to the not-terribly-meaningful distinction between AUTOtune and… let’s call it MANUALtune. Digital pitch manipulation is digital pitch manipulation. Autotune makes an entire song sound fake, robotic, soulless and awful. Melodyne makes only certain particular notes sound fake, robotic, soulless and awful. The result, and the fundamental mindset problem, is essentially the same.

The Rolling Stones are considered the bad boys of rock & roll. Mick is not the best singer vocally but he has a raw quality & he has charisma. I grew up with their early stuff. My favorite era of The Rolling Stones is from the 60's British Invasion. I loved the "Flowers" album. They had a lot of great early hits such as "My Girl", "Lady Jane", "Out Of Time", "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", "Get Off of My Cloud", "Paint It Black", "Ruby Tuesday", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", "Honky Tonk Women", "You Can't Always Get What You Want", "Gimme Shelter" etc.

I seen the Stones in 2012 in Newark New Jersey, it was there 50th Anniversary Tour. The tickets were a rip off for one I paid over a grand. But Mick Taylor was going to be there and I waited a lifetime to see him with the rest of them. I seen him solo twice in NYC what a great player he is. I gone to the Stones gig by myself, just wanted to have fun without drama. I was all the way on top in heaven for a grand. Kind of pissed off, but met a friend people, we went for a couple of drinks and laughed like idiots. Gone back and Lady Gaga came out and did gimme shelter, she had the place laughing there asses off. I had to admit she had a pretty good voice, but not my style at all. Then John Meyer came out and was pretty good, and Robbie Robertson . Then the time we were waiting for Mick Taylor doing Midnight Rambler. The arena went crazy, he was even dancing. He blew Keef away, he was shining that night. It was a night and show I will never forget, even with one song he blew the Stones away. As I said I always been a big Stones fan. But when Taylor left, there music went down hill and kind of boring. Well that was my last time I seen them and had a blast of a time, and the people I hung out with were dynamite. Sorry I wrote a little book, but had so much fun.

True story. I saw The Rolling Stones here at the Hampton Coliseum in 1980, and they filmed their "Going to a Go-Go" video that evening. My buddy and I are in the video somewhere. It was Keith Richards' 38th birthday, and I boldy declared this was surely going to be their final tour ever. I was only off by about 42 years. Additionally, that was actually the weekend Keith infamously smacked somebody with his guitar when they ran up on the stage.

When you asked rhetorically at the beinning, what was the secret of their longevity I gave it some brief thought, and all I could think of was 1. they were very good, 2. they were very popular and making lots of money. Your answer "authenticity" took me by surprise, but I agree wholeheartedly. As you say, that's the key for any act which has lasted a long time. Great insight, and worth watching this video for.

This is such a good, solid program. Haven’t watched in a while, been busy. Your analysis is spot on, as ever, meticulous, even catching that Americanization in Mick’s delivery.
Btw, have you heard, Keith has quit smoking? Says he’s amazed at all the volume in air he has now, in singing. Pushing 80, and decides, yeah, I think it’s time I quit smoking! What an inspiration (never smoked myself).
Worth noting in this regard, despite living through the druggy era, apparently the Sones never really fell into that trap.
The drummer and original bass player boozed it up, but since the early days they already had families, kids, avoided the drug scene.
After getting thrown in jail, Keith said no more of that. And Mick has always been too health conscious to get lost on that path.
    God bless, The Rolling Stones!

To note Gram Parsons was stayng with the Stones in the South of France when they jammed this out and Keith eventually "wrote" it. This influence clearly carried through to the 'Some Girls' elpee, too. But... this is Flying Burrito Borothers almost to a tee. The tickets were done by lottery, and guess how much our tickets cost?….$7.00!
So many people dressed up or in costume for the show. Incredible show however I left with the worse headache I’ve ever experienced. So enjoy your analysis of so many of my generations great artists, and the appreciation you show along with your beautiful smile!

I think the essential thing about the Rolling Stones is Mick Jagger, specifically his lyrics. They're just (only) rock and roll songs, not really about much. But the words have an easy, almost lazy perfectness that's hardly ever matched. So many tunes and so many writers have tried so hard to do/be what those tunes naturally are -- just effortlessly, exactly what they're supposed to be.

I don't know if the pun was intended, saying "WHO are these young whippersnappers" when talking about the Stones, but it gave me a little laugh regardless. The Rolling Stones have always been one of the most polarizing bands, and it makes a lot of sense that the fact that they are so unapologetically themselves would play a big part in that. I remember being 13 when they were on the Tattoo You tour and absolutely begging my parents to let me go, because the Stones were getting pretty old and "this could be the last time" they tour. Ah the perspective of a 13 year old! My parents did not let me go, they hated the Rolling Stones much more than any other band that I listened to, but fortunately I did get to see the Stones later on the Steel Wheels tour. Another great analysis, appreciate your insights!

jagger's voice is the rolling stones. it's an expressive instrument that knows no peers. it's rock and roll as it should be - messy and authentic.

@1:08, an incredibly young, "baby-faced" Charlie Watts. Seems incredible to conceive, that he's been gone just under a full year (Aug 24, 2021). RIP, dear Charlie-you are definitely missed!

Gram Parsons was very tight with Keith, and was a country music influence. Keith covered the Merle Hagard song "Sing Me Back Home" which he learned from Gram. It's worth a listen.

I always watch with Fil. I might miss something that Fil can pick out things I miss if I watch Wild Horses video. This gives Fil credit for views and I watch to the end, hit like. My way of supporting Fil and not the person that uploaded the video. I grew up listening to the Rolling Stones until My older brother gave me Led Zepplin 1st album. When Fil plays his guitar, I really listen and watch most of the times using head phones.

    I don't know, I don't care. Long live the stones !

I love Wild Horses, I love Gram’s version best, but Mick is as always awesome. Mick made a trade with Gram, he could record Wild Horses 1st for turning Honkey Tonk Woman into Country Honk, a good deal for everyone, especially us fans!❤️👏🌟🎸Keith wrote a great song, Mick definitely has that country accent down…

    As always, excellent.
I know you get a ton of people sending you ideas on a band to comment on. I would like to suggest one also.
The band is "The Outlaws" from the seventies. The toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd, in fact were friends of theirs, both bands coming from Florida. The most well known song would be "Green Grass and High Tides". I would love to hear what you have to say.
I had just watched your review of Lynyrd Skynyrd's live version of Free Bird and was going to leave this request there but the last post was 7 months old and I doubted you had time to read all your all comments.

Fil's point about Mick changing his accent to fit the song and lyrics is perhaps best exemplified in the song "Loving Cup" from "Exile on Main Street". On this Mick pronounces "Man" as Mayun and "None" as Nun. It works perfectly and adds to whole feel of this great song.

Can't deny the talent of the band and Mick completely commands the stage. Mick was Mick with his style of singing which I could never understand what the hell he was singing. Just sounded like mumbo jumbo... Have to love the wild far away look in his eye in this performance. Amazing they are STILL around to this day; a credit to their understanding of one another.

Wonder if you ever heard of Ted Newman Jones, friend of Keith's and he was a luthier and made a place in history with his handmade guitars and was the first to become a backstage guitar technician. He also helped with Mic's guitars after he saw what a huge helper he was to Keith. Ted was family to us, growing up next door to us in the summers. Newman guitars are now rare and expensive...just wish Ted had lived to see this appreciation of his talent. This song...bittersweet for me. My first record was actually Green Grass and High Tides! One reason they sound so horrible in concert is that Mic always does the set ups and sound checks himself. lol. Got to love them though. I saw them 4 times in my youth!

Willie Nelson is reputed to have said "These young kids need to start thinking about what kind of world they will be leaving Keith Richards and me."
Back in the mid-60s my garage band did covers of some of the songs the Stones did.
