“The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.” ― Frank Zappa
Zappa has such a vast repertoire of music it annoys when I hear some of his worst selected junk as somehow representative of his brilliance. His serious stuff, mostly instrumentals were incredible works of art.
Songs used in video: Don't Eat The Yellow Snow Tinsel Town Rebellion Call Any Vegetable Trouble Every Day Muffin Man Dinah Moe Humm Smoke On The Water (obviously not Frank Zappa) Cosmik Debris Dancin' Fool Bobby Brown Goes Down Joe's Garage Keep It Greasy Valley Girl Night School
Yes, I know the man was prolific but not even ONE song from _One-size-fits-all_ or _burnt weeny sandwich?_ he's just a novelty to these people, they have no idea of the genius they speak of.
"The guys who want to be remembered, guys like Bush, Regan, will put a lot of money and a lot of work into making sure that remembrance is just terrific. I don't care."
"Some scientists say that the major building block of the universe is hydrogen is because it's the most plentiful element, . My theory is that the universe is made out of stupidity because it'is more plentiful than hydrogen, and -since it's more plentiful, then why shouldn't we talk about it?" - Frank Zappa
your pretty much right, they had a lot of live stuff and it was heavily overdubbed. Rat Tomago is the most amazing solo ever (it's clipped from The Torture Never Stops)
For the last time Watchmojo....................PLEASE do the Top 10 Frank Zappa Songs & Top 10 Frank Zappa Moments!!!!!! P.S. Include Honorable Mentions for both lists!!!
There is no such thing as a top 10 of what he did, his stuff is so unique and varied my own top 10, if I had such a thing, would be constantly changing over the years simply by learning to appreciate his music more and more as time goes on.
Perhaps too much focus on which material made it into the mainstream charts (Valley Girl might've had something of an impact on pop culture, but in terms of building Frank's artistic legacy works like Hot Rats and Roxy are way more relevant). Any effort to expose Zappa to a wider audience is welcome though
Well 99.9% of musicians would disagree with your statement along with millions of fans , just because most of his music is not melodicly accessible to most people does not mean it's not " good music " , infact his compositions are great music , only now, decades after his death are music schools & orchestras worldwide teaching & playing his music because they got past the satire & looked at the complexity of composition as well as combined rhythms & his extreme use of different time signatures , most bands that play " good music " couldn't play Zappas music without butchering it .
I bought weasels Ripped My Flesh 41 years ago & put it down as too weird. One year later, I was bored, and I picked it up & I haven't finished exploring the genius of this man's musical mind. Sometimes you just have to listen harder then you do to Linda Ronstadt or some other mainstream act. No offense to them, but Brilliance is Brilliance & mainstream is candy.
Best man to ever live.
That feeling when one of the best Watch Mojo videos is one of the least viewed
A true weirdo and visionary at heart.
R.I.P. Frank Zappa.
Mr.Zappa was a great musican and a great American. I miss him.
Thanks for appreciating it, sincerely.

Frank Zappa is my Music God! and my Biggest Musical Inspiration!

True that. People always focus on the "comedy" songs. But, Frank knew that's how it was and would always be with him.
The song at 1:22 is CALL ANY VEGETABLE, for those that were wondering.

+Bainbridge40 As flattering as you might think that would be, I don't think Zappa would appreciate being called anyone's "leader".

Zappa only spent 10 days in jail
That woman (dancer?) at 6:28 was the one who also appears with Bowie in music video Fame, right?

Icon.
Hail zappa😊
Would he have approved of Mojo doing a segment? I guess any publicity is good publicity but come on!!
Yes, can't say I know what he would have said but, cheesy seems to be the word for this.
Awesome! Beefheart next :D
the general public doesn't deserve Frank or Cole Porter
He would have been for Bush/Cheney. Know that in my heart.

Not thoughtful or accurate.
Yeah, and I don't think he spent six months in jail. They just hassled him on that bogus charge.

A nothing . On a par with the Talking Heads guy.
First again bitches.... I didn't find a life... Let's try again...

Seems like a really smart guy but its a stretch to call his songs good music
Some humor, some silly, some offensive with a whole lot of beautiful, meaningful, masterful composition. Ear of the listener I suppose.
Does this guy do comedy music like weird al?
Okay thanks.
