  • Time to bring it home! The new to me Pursuit 3400 is geared up and ready to deliver back to Maryland... ON ITS OWN BOTTOM. Ben and Roman set off on what turns out to be a 15 hour delivery. Engines are running, hull side is patched, and spirits are high. BUT, despite our best preparation and thorough planning, will it be enough to make the 185 NM trip unscathed???? Tune in to find out...
Welcome to Boat Restoration by Ben! This is a channel based around all things boat and yacht restoration related. I work full time in the marine industry and when I'm not at work, I'm currently restoring my one of a kind 1992 Sea Ray 380 Sun Sport. This is my 12th boat project! From $100 boats to 60 year old relics, I started small and worked my way up. Despite my best judgement, I buy boats that need A LOT of work and fix them up myself. I grew up boating at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, went to school to become an engineer, worked at John Deere for 5 years, and then decided to give it all up to pursue my dream to work in the recreational boat industry. Now having since moved to the Chesapeake Bay area, my mission is to share with the world my love and passion for mechanics and wrenching through my marine projects all while teaching you how to enjoy boats on a budget. I hope you Like these videos and please don't forget to Subscribe! Cheers, Ben.

Can’t help myself I’ve got to say it, think about this, you left dock for your first run in an unfamiliar boat on a 150 nm trip without filling your tanks, and someone has to leave a safe harbour to come to your aid because you ran out of fuel.

also didn't bring phone chargers either? what if they ran out of fuel and had dead phones... hopefully he tested VHF radio before they left. Also a good way to suck all the crud, and biomass that was growing in that old fuel by running it low like that.

Great video! Navigation on tight channels in shallow waters is a challenge. I know the UI on Navionics is 10/10 but the navigation is 2/10 (i.e. not good enough). That chart plotter might be ancient but would've kept you on course. Making similar mistakes is how I learned!

Great job guys. Nice to know I'm not the only paranoid captain around. I'll never forget running up the Delaware bay by myself in the middle of the remnants of a hurricane in a boat that I had basically rebuilt that was from the 70s. I actually took her all the way from launching in Michigan city Indiana up and through the grand loop basically. All the waters around Chicago river and such are nerve wrecking. I also went during the worst season of when a huge mayflies brood was in the Midwest and I would literally have to scoop shovels full of them off the boat every couple of hours. Some people wind up cutting across the middle of Florida but we actually went all the way down through the Bahamas and as close to Cuba as possible at the time. I've always wanted to get a professional captains job to transport boats from wherever up and down the east coast. But primarily south Carolina and south through Florida or more south over even to Mexico. My favorite trip is probably starting in Pensacola and following the coast down to playa del Carmen Mexico. Truly an epic beautiful trip. Maybe we will get lucky would be legit to be your right hand guy some day

The boat has been sitting, it's entirely possible there's algae in the tanks, a clogged, fuel filter, etc. Etc. It's also possible that the gauges could just Read incorrectly. That boat should easily go 350 mi on a full tank

All that prep and all those spares, yet you didn't top off with fuel or bring extra? While I have not spent much time on the water, I am fairly sure that fuel stops are a bit harder to come by compared to when on land. One would think that when in a vessel that one is not familiar with the rate of fuel consumption and familiar with the range of said vessel that fuel would be a bit more of a top priority in the mentioned spares.
But it does make for a more interesting watch. LOL

3M Thick aluminum aerospace tape works great to seal any hull shape. You can work it into grooves much better than duct tape. Buying slightly expired aluminum tape is much less expensive and good enough for anything not flying around.

Who doesn’t carry spare fuel in a diesel boat? 🤷‍♂️🙄
Who doesn’t top off along the way when you had the opportunity? 🤷‍♂️🙄
Hereabouts, if you run out of fuel at sea, your commercial captains license gets rescinded. 🙄
Technically in your plan there should be 1/3rd of your fuel for your trip out, 1/3rd for return trip & 1/3rd in reserve for “emergency’s / unforeseen events”.
What if someone along your route had a break down or emergency & you had to tow them? You wouldn’t have had enough fuel.
Sailing in on one engine running on fumes is a fail. Getting friends to bring fuel to you is a fail.
Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.
Learn your chart plotter, update its navionics card.
I’ll give you a pass since it’s a new to you boat & your still learning but as captain it is your responsibility.
Get spare diesel Jerry cans and stow them aboard for emergency’s to top off fuel BEFORE you run the engine dry.
Priming a diesel engine at sea in an emergency isn’t an option.

those turbos are screaming because it's making torque. it's struggling because it's 90% up on plane . if you give'er a smidge more beans it''ll get up on plane and burn less fuel . and you can back off on the throttles a bit . you want horsepower on plane . torque to get you on plane . But I get it man .. first time jitters .

Good post, good advice. She was running exceptionally well, especially after sitting on the hard for 9 months. No telling how much tank algae and bio-scum is in there. An hour in and those jitters should've subsided enough to get fully up on plane, then back off a tad to keep her up.
Showed up prepared, but didn't top off. No idea what it's like up there, but down here, with a captain's license, running out of fuel at sea is a quick way to get that license rescinded. I'm not criticizing, just saying.
Beautiful boat, and I'd wager he never does that again.

I made the same mistake with my new to me tiara bringing it home about 120nm after purchase. Filled up before leaving but stbd engine started getting warm so turned around after 30 mins to go back. Dealer replaced water pump & left after a few hours wait. About 2/3rds of the way back started thinking not enough fuel but the delay meant it was early evening so fuel stations were closed. Decided to chance it & made it into home harbor about 300 yds from the dock before running out of fuel. Flagged down another boat coming in who towed us the rest of the way & got off the boat about 30 mins before it started raining. Foolish but very lucky. I should have known better.

She wasn't fully up on plane, that turbo whine was from all the torque. Little more throttle to get her up fully, back off just enough to keep her up, and not only does the turbo whine subside, but she probably has another 70 odd NM left. 1/3 out, 1/3 running, 1/3 back.

What brand are those gauges? They don’t make the original VDO gauge (I have a Tiara same year as your Pursuit dash and all) but yours look really nice. My oil pressure gauge on port side is fogged up. I used to be a parts manager at a Tiara dealer and Tiara couldn’t even get them anymore. I think in a previous video you mentioned they were original but they are not. The gauges on your boat look great. Also, if you have receipts for anything, did they have to replace any of the sending units?

Assuming it was 3/4 full, you had 200 gal and went 150nm. Is 1+ gal a mile good fuel economy for a boat that large? Thats a beautiful boat, up keeping that boat has to be very very expensive.

Sorry. 150 miles, not once you consider pulling into any marina and filling fuel before risking be stranded at night? just no.

When did you run out? Did your friend being you fuel? Did you make it to your slip? How long did it take? Were the guages swapped? How much fuel did you use estimated? Great video. Cool boat. Looking forward to the restoration. Will you keep the boat or sell it? Do you do charters?

I’d say, they ran out of fuel for effect.
Adds a little drama to a mundane trip.
And maybe some bad math was also involved.

Cracking stuff. Love the noise it makes. Amongst the trillion armchair boaters, you could've knocked the revs down to half earlier on ? Not.sure of speed.vs.efficiency on beasts like this though. Love ot though. 👍

Low on fuel ? Slow down ! The least you could do is top off, with some new fuel in with the old. Trusting unknown fuel senders ? That stand alone Furuno gear is good stuff. Always use that depth sounder when underway, and that radar could save your life.

Can you explain why you throttled up with the left stick when getting on plane?

    • @semajniffirg230

putting the left throttle forward like that syncs the throttles so you can run both engines at the same rpm
