Bethesda doesn’t have an engine problem. They have a writing problem. They have an ego problem. They have a delusion problem. They have a complacency problem. **edit** yes I know their engine is archaic as hell but a good dev team and writers could 100% make a great game in it because…well they HAVE. Many times.
They have a problem problem.

@@belltolls1984 literally and figuratively because they're stalling.
Nah, the engine is DEFINITELY part of the problem. But for sure, writing is their worst aspect, I'd say. But the engine really holds them back and puts them in stagnant development cycles. Todd has said they still use it because it's how they've always done it, it's what they know etc. Which, makes sense to an extent. Until it's 15-20 years later. Sure, you've got tons of experience with it at that point, but also tons of bloat on top of the framework. Years to learn a new engine etc.

As much as i like unreal engine, i don't like the fact that every company is switching to unreal. I would like some diversity in game engines.
Actually, this switch would make Bethesda's games worse. An engine hasn't got anything to do with bugs or poor optimizations, that are at the game level. The Creation Engine has many great features that the Unreal Engine doesn't have such as modding, flexibility and various RPGs mechanics. Shifting to the Unreal Engine would be counterproductive as devs knowledge would become useless and they would have to relearn everything or be fired. Also, they couldn't reuse game logic and many assets in newer games. Bethesda's problem is their developer's huge ego and poor writing skills, probably the devs also work under a lot of stress because they try to find quick solutions to complex problems introducing many bugs in their games, instead of properly implementing the game's logic.
I love how clean cut Jake comes on. Then it switches to Pliskin Jake for the sponsor.

Welcome to the World of Tomorrow!
Bethesda has lost me as as a customer. The one saving grace of their games is mods. And now that they want to monetize that, I have no incentive to buy their products.
modders want to monotize that. it was their push to get the creation shop made and they submit their mods to be on it. your comment makes it seem like Bethesda just steals mods and paywalls them, which is just incorrect. you can't do much modding if you haven't seen modders paywalling their mods themselves, outside of the creation shop. "it's a mod from (insert modder here) discord" and it's behind their patreon or other subscription
And that is the reason for not switching. Tell Jake that, I fixed his reason for Bethesda not switching.
Not only do they monetize the mods now, they have become far too politically biased, to the point where they will ban certain mods, but that’s just my take
@@imitenotbe I didn’t say any of those things. What I said is, Bethesda wants to make money off of mods. That is true. Just because some modders want to be paid too, doesn’t mean Bethesda is just being altruistic. That is so naive it’s almost endearing
@@imitenotbea very small percentage of modders got on board with that...some of the better modders were against the monetization when they first tried it
The part where Jake holds up the two alarmo clocks and says anyone who buys them has something wrong with them made me really laugh. The way he said it and the expression on his shaved face were just hilarious; I loved it!
My biggest issue with the whole "Bethesda should switch to unreal" is that I still want the games to be moddable to hell and back.
I don't know if you can do that with unreal. I honestly can't think of a single game that allows multiple mods that add and change a ton of content at the same time, all working together.
It's true, it's only console players who think it's a good idea, all of us on PC know exactly why they're not using a different engine
Unreal is relatively moddable. I think it would take the modders quite a few years however to get to their current level as they are right now in the Creation engine. However unreal obviously had a lot of tools and shortcuts that may aide this problem.
I do hope they switch engines because they’re having to rework everything for every single game instead of just focusing on the story and gameplay. Either they should switch or make Creation 2
Ark SA is on UE5, and has mods on both console and pc with a built in mod browser and organizer
@@saucyg6371 Unreal is just as old as Creation. Also it would take A LOT of retraining to work with unreal.
You guys are crazy. You mod the games to make them good and then when they consider just making the games good in the first place you’re like “NOOO!! I wanna do MORE work to play my games!!”

@@Psychotoxic86 bad day?
Modders have proved for more than a decade now that you can get the creation engine running not only great but exceptionally stable and feature rich. Bethesda simply does not prioritise stability and performance in their development.
Bethesda single most critical flaw is they do not understand the games that their audience wants. Consistently prioritising scale over quality, neglecting role playing immersion for buzzword features and streamlining the experience to a mind numbingly dull linear adventure/drama game.
For years now, I've been waking up to "The Words I Feel" from Xenosaga. Soft, gentle, and the high pitch of the instrument works wonders to pull me out of sleep.

Friday October 6th? Sounds like you had Elder Scrolls 6 on the brain Jake
I love Skyrim. In my first play through an NPC caused the prisoner cart to stall. I had to restart the game. That is not an "engine" issue, it is a problem with the game devs and QA. Five years from now when Elder Scrolls 6 launches we will see if it "just works".
Honestly, the fact that can even happen is kind of amazing.
The fact that some random occurence can make an NPC do that, is why they can't move to UE5. I played Skyrim through about 14 times on PS3 and PC and the cart always worked. They probably did it 1000 times with it always working, QA wouldn't find it.
@@Safetytrousers The funny thing is I thought it was a scripted event. So, I waited for about 5 minutes before I realized it was a glitch.

I know Bethesda isn't flavor of the month right now but I just want to say that what I like about them is how open their games are to modding. Its so easy to do and anyone can do it. Right from making a sword have more damage (takes 2 mins to do) to creating entire new levels. Their current engine is so open and accessible to this. I dont know much about Unreal Engine - if ES6 goes to that will it mean modding will be very tough to do?
Yeah their current engine / game is so open to modding that all the modders quit trying...

I am 100% certain an AI could write a far more compelling story than Emil.
As a developer, people claiming that going to EU5 would solve everything have clearly no clue how engines work.
I agree. The Euporeon Union, no matter what iteration it is, would not be able to solve everything.
Exactly. It's a tool like anything else. Incompetent design, bad writing etc. won't be solved with nicer rendering.
I don't think anyone is saying it's going to solve everything. Their writing team sucks as well right now. However, if you're building a house on a bad foundation, lets address that first before we talk about fixing the ugly carpet.
Removing the mammoth that is the creation engine and most likely antiquated workflows coming with it is certainly only the first step but also the most important one.
Personally i already did not care about ES6 after everything i've seen since Fallout 4. Now i at least wonder what other necessary improvements they'll make.
@@alhira5098 @JeffMyers409 Agree, I agree that BGS is stuck in their workflow ways, and it is hindering their potential. The engine might work against them, but just switching to EU5, without changing their development processes will just lead to a mediocre game, on a new engine.
As from an engine perspective, the Creation Engine 2 is not a bad engine, it is perfectly designed to do what BGS wants it to do, and that is the entire issue.
I actually like the creative engine being able to pick up objects and let them sit there for the next time you come through.
I don't have confidence in bethesda. Way too many heavy hitters now that have raised the bar. Starfield is a flop.
The game engine for Starfield is the least of the problems. Plenty of very old games manage to be engaging on antiquated tech. The number one problem with Starfield is the writing and character development. The main quest has zero grandeur.
Exactly.
Starfield has truly fantastic writing. Think about the entire premise.
Constellation finds an artifact, Barrett has a "vision". They outsource locating more artifacts. You, the literal noob, are tasked with collecting this extremely valuable item, because you're the only one dumb enough to do it.
Then Barrett, comes back and takes the artifact and gets back onto his ship, because he was the first person to have a "vision". Thus abandoning you, the player to a lifetime of digging in the dirt for minimum wage. The End.
Oh wait, that's right, he hands you the keys to his ship, and every story moment after that, makes even less sense... Did Emil just use ChatGPT to write this crap! UE5 can't fix bad ideas.
Except it’s always one of the top single players on steam and Xbox being played everyday since its launch. More like a bunch of Sony trolls whining non stop.
@@EpicConspiracy you're allowed to like Starfield. Why don't you believe people are permitted to dislike it?
Almost everyone who is upset about Starfield, wanted it to be great. It just doesn't live up to that. It's not "Sony Ponies" or "Trolls", it's BGS fans, who feel the games aren't keeping pace with the market.
@@EpicConspiracy Shattered Space DLC is a part of the premium version, which will drive players back to check out the new content. I don't know what sales are like for those who have to pay for the DLC, but that would be the best measure of player satisfaction. I have not touched the DLC but I have 1600hrs into the game (PC). Playing a game does not prevent one from seeing it's flaws.
I dont think its impossible to upgrade the creation engine.. I mean look at what Rockstar games did with Rage. It went from GTA 5 to GTA 6. They obviously did a lot of optimization work to make it look as good as it does. Starfield looks pretty decent too to be honest, minus the characters. The engine still needs a lot of work. They need to completely revamp their engine team to overhaul the engine.
But the engine upgrades have to be incremental and have to be tested alot , you can't just upgrade it in one day as having flaws in the engine basically means unfixable bugs in the game
Do you know anything about game engines or game development? Have you worked in the field on these sort of projects?
Yes but they could just let another engine focus on improving the engine and make a damn game instead of tweaking an engine for years . the creation engine sucked before and it sucks in starfield now

A lot of people are focusing on the Silent Hill 2 remake, but just to give it a mention the Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition recently got its final update. So if you're in the mood to play what's essentially a modern remaster of the original Silent Hill 2 that's an option as well.
I will believe it when I see it. Bethesda would never use Unreal Engine especially for their primary flagship game like Elder Scrolls. But stranger things have happened such as Tencent wanting to buy Ubisoft.
tencent buying ubi seems like the most normal thing that could ever happen, that's like finding out EA wants to buy paradox

Most old games are best left in your memory. But then a few games really still shine after all those years.
To be fair, the engine used for Starfield is an amazing bit of technology. The lighting and physics are systems have incredible fidelity, and It even simulates the orbit of celestial bodies around each other. Many players have encountered eclipses in the game, and if you really wanted, you actually can fly from one planet to the next in real time, but it takes many, many hours. So really, there's no need for Bethesda to abandon a highly capable game engine they are intimately familiar with and jump to Unreal Engine.

The issue with the game engine is that as natural staff turnover occurs you are NOT going to find replacements with experience in their prioprietary engine. That is the main reason other companies are ditching their internal engine for Unreal since hiring people with experience in Unreal is possible.
Companies should start hiring the fans that make these awesome creations! They say that they can't do it then we see someone who doesn't even do it professionally actually do it!
"Or are you playing something new like Silent Hill 2?" I cannot believe we live in a society where this line exists in 2024 and I love it
Yes, when you release the same game reskinned and rethemed on the same engine for 15 years. The engine gets refined to those games. Gj Ubisoft for clearing that up.
The one thing I hate about the creation engine 2 is the loading for every building and outside location, it breaks the immersion. If they could improve on one thing it would be that.

If it makes the game better then so be it. The current Creation engine got shown its limits when the spacegame Starfield actually can only be a " game of boxes". ES6 needs to have a dynamic open world, wont accept loading screens every minute when the Witcher 3 from 2015 has a seamless world. And the little physics that let you put a bucket over shopkeepers heads so you can rob them surely can be implemented in Unreal :)
The new host seems very competent. I wonder how small the odds are of finding a new host with the same name as the good old Jake Baldino. Bravo, Gamesrank!
Before it’s over, ES6 is going to make Duke Nukem Forever look like a timely sequel.
Bethestha needs to care about there games again. Part of their charm was the Creation engine, and it's a god damn shame it's still basically the same as it was since Skyrim only with more pixels. I mean starfield's creation tool kit still uses nomenclature from skyrim in the app when you look up certain objects... Switching to Unreal will basically save them money and time at the expense of feeling like a "Bethestha" game.
Bethesda should either remake creation engine from ground up (not put tapes around it) or switch to unreal and give that 5% cut rather than selling 20-30% less amount on launch.
I am almost done with Ubisoft. If Tencent buys them, I feel like that might be enough to push me over.

Because, let's be real, VR games are theme park gimmicks, not real experiences you can't convince me otherwise. They're never, EVER as fleshed out as traditional games.

Bethesda's "engine" is perfectly designed to connect small zones with loading screens.
The major flaw with UE5 is assett loading/streaming, which causes the infamous frame rate stuttering. According to Digital Foundry, UE5 does not fully utilise all threads on a multicore cpu, as oppose to Red Engine for example.
