- Honda Odyssey - BYBA Transmission - Teardown Inspection.
On this video we see the basic teardown of a 5 speed Honda - Acura Transmission.
This transmission looked in an okay, so to speak, condition. This transmission had the common no movement condition that is the result of a restricted filter. What we see here in this unit is very fine metal contamination but it looks a little bit clean.
This is the reality of some shops that give a very low price just to get the job in and end up with this scenario. We call this "flat rate" or "patch build". The same torque converter was used which is a Big NO-NO on a honda - acura transmission since it is a very common failure item.
I had heard so many complaints about the Honda transmissions in general, and the Odyssey in particular. I've watched some other UA-cam videos of guys replacing the solenoids, but your tear-down and analysis was a complete eye-opener. You just dissected the beast and exposed the shoddy band-aid work of the other shop, and were spot-on about the torque converter not being touched, and just leading to the same failure eventually--wow, you are the Jedi master of transmissions!!
5 star comment brother, this guys it's amazing.
This guy is the man.... I love the way he took apart that transmission and knew every part he disassemble ...I give him so much props on his mastery trade...😎
Muchas gracias
Hiram, I can hardly believe how quickly you work on these transmissions. You are really a talented and knowledgeable mechanic!
its so fing awesome seeing a true master of his craft at work. If I had more money Id pay to have this guy overhaul my transmission. Great to see a guy doing what he loves
My compliments on what is the best how-to video I've ever seen. I don't have an issue with my BYBA but, if I did, I'd feel very comfortable having you nurse it back to health!
I'm currently watching this on tv, it's very informative. Although I'm a good mechanic with engine rebuilding, I've never tackled a transmission. This a great learning experience.
You know exactly what you're doing brother and you do it well, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge .
i sat thru this entire video to learn more about these BYBA's but i think i remember you saying "once the outer shell gets removed, it'll look simpler" ( on-lookers will understand better )... And by GoLLy - That tear down makes me Appreciate REAL transmission mechanics! 👀
Wonderful, my man, Wonderful: you deserve every penny of whatever you get paid for these transmission jobs👌.
Thank God! That you showed where 2 tiny silver balls on Main Valve Body and I would have missed it!!! Thanks Hiram, you rock! Right now I am watching your other video to put all parts back on BYBA. My first time! ;)
you my friend are a savage!!! ive watched this video 3 times and it still amazes me! you are a jack of your trade.... you make this look easy as pie.... i envy you and your skills!!
He sure in the hell does . I need his ass right about know.
Absolutely 100% professional! Great work man keep it up!
Very nice
Your explaination is so pretty good,we appreciate you.
Wow how you know how to put that complicated mess back together is amazing.
Awesome vids! I have a BGFA that was suddenly locking up in 3rd, decided to do a full rebuild on it. Combined your Honda 4-speed and Odyssey and Acura 5 speed videos to gather info and managed to successfully do it! However I didn't replace all the solenoids and so a couple years later I've got the tranny out because it went into limp mode, no go in 3rd. Alas I just pulled it apart, about 90% of all frictions are toast, 3rd is literally bare metal. I guess I didn't save any money not replacing those solenoids the first time through! Argh!
But I'm running on - thank you for these! I think you should start a Patreon because you are, as a few have said already, a natural teacher and sharing your encyclopedic knowledge of these units is an incredible gift. For now, glad to see you back after a year or so hiatus. Hope all is well, take care!
Me: I don't really want to watch a 40 minute transmission autopsy
Me 40 minutes later: Holy shit, this guy is amazing. I'd totally take my transmission to this guy for repair.
I'm a retired mechanic, who worked for Acura, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and Toyota. We always swapped units out, and I did take some training classes on disassembly of transmissions, but for the most part, we swapped reman units in. If I was to want to learn how to overhaul a transmission, I would 100% want you to be my mentor. Awesome job! 😎
knowing how they fail, the key is to keep 'em alive with fresh ATF and easier driving - They really can't handle high output for long
Hiram Gutierrez This was the most awesome transmission teardown that I have ever seen!! Your a beast! Would be cool to be an apprentice under your wing. Would learn so much. Great diagnosing and part decription as you went along. Not many I believe could do that without flinching. Huge props to you sir! 😎🤙💪
That ls a lot of transmission. Never ever have I seen a tear down. Just in awe of all the parts.
amazing work, you know every parts of transmission in detail. good job man.
Watching you take apart that transmission was like watching a maestro conduct an orgestra. AWESOME job!
I million bolts later, wallah! Oh wait, you forgot that 18mm valve body bearing! Yikes!!!
Transmission technicians are a breed apart!!! Nice work my man.....
My Pops use to rebuild transmissions so I know this guy knows what he's doing 100%! I know motors I need to learn transmissions especially these but I know it takes a lot of patience!
God forbid I need a rebuild, but if I do I want this guy to do it. Knows his shit. You can tell by the way he describes specifics.
It's enjoyable to watch your craftsmanship, even though I'd never attempt such a repair!
This was so incredible to watch! Loved it. You truly make this work an art😀
Hi
This shit is a pain in the ass am sure.
Thank you very much for this video!! Considering buying a broken Honda trans from the junkyard to rebuild to learn
Hello Hiram, truly a very nice video and thank you for taking the time and sharing it with us. I have a 2003 Honda Odyssey and i am the 1st owner. it has currently about 124K miles on it, I talked to Honda and told them about the problem. They will take a look at it through the dealer. Question is. Is it a 5 speed AT or 4 speed gear. how will i know. I have a problem while shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, is 20Mph is 2nd or 3rd and then again while moving from 40mph to 50. it gives jerk and changes the gear, so is that a 3rd gear ?
There has been a recall and i was not informed by honda. the return cooler line was placed on my car in the earlier 40K miles. My question is if the transmission had truly a problem, why was just patching with a cooler line was subsituted by Honda. This is cheating customers and blinding NHTSA. Would you recommend me a good transmission repair shop as people who did replace the tranny are on their 3rd tranny now. Thanks
Mad respect of your knowledge. Great video!
You may as well be doing magic, by the time I put that thing back together it would probably make a nice sci-fi movie prop ! Great work brother ... I subscribed !
Amazing ... that was something to see, a master at work .
Damn you are Fast at diagnosis of that Odyssey transmission, Currently I have my 1999 Acura TL in a trusted repair shop getting the transmission rebuilt. I am hoping there is not a bunch of extra stuff worn out because of money problems, Car runs great when warmed up some, but cold mornings it revs between first and second gear and also revs before going into first. until I wait for engine to get warm. any suggestions or something I should ask my mechanic before he is done putting my tranny back in ? Thank you for the excellent video. Steven
Holy Crap... You are awesome dude. I will not be attempting that. I dont know where you are. But I wish you could do My 05 Odyssey Torque converter. The issue I have is It feels like it is shifting in and out of overdrive. Low and High speeds. Been told by a few people that it is the torque converter. Im gettin ready to pull the trigger on that. I just went to Honda shop $2500 just to replace the converter. I'm sure they wont be tearing it apart. I already bought New fluid, the 2 2nd & 3rd pressure switches. Crush washers, and filter under the battery. I'm thinking about selling it. Kinda sucks. I like the van.
I have a 2005 Honda Pilot with 200,000 miles - if I ever have a problem with the transmission I hope I can find someone as knowledgeable and trustworthy as you to work on it.
Great video... and all extra comments! Apreciated... thanks for sharing with the world~
Rebuilt my manual k series transmission, tempted to do a B7WA, your videos are giving me confidence
Man you are good. Don’t know where you are located but your shop would definitely have my business. Like watching someone who knows what they are doing. Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated Artie 😊
Gracias don Hiram por compartir sus conocimientos, he seguido sus videos y muy bien explicados, talvez mas adelante estos mismos videos los hace en espanol, para los que dominamos poco ingles, gracias y muchas bendiciones
We have a 2004 Odyssey with 206K miles and it's on the third transmission. 1st failed around 80K miles and Honda paid half for the replacement. They gave us a 3 year, 36K mile warranty. Failed abut 10K miles later and got the 3rd one for free. If it goes out now, I'll drive it to this guy. Absolute miracle worker.
I don't know how much they pay you there, but it's not enough!!! Very professional! Good work!
You know your craft. Amazing to watch.
Great video!! I’m here because my 05 Accord V4 needs more trans work. First had some bearings replace along with the idler shaft. Now it’s making noises. But now getting word it’s the case and torque converter. So I think I was one that got a patch job, thinking It was getting a full rebuild.
He’s a master of transmission repair guy. Took him 40:02 to disassembled the transmission apart. He makes it look so easy, like piece of cake. Putting it back together, i bet you it will probably be fun. So many gears and other parts.
i wonder what they do with the left over parts 😂
I Like the way you work and do things right. Don
This guy had a blind fold on. He's good. Good work brother
Wow. Good job. Transmission is more complex than the engine.
Masterpiece of a video. I have a 2002 Odyssey which I know have problem prone transmissions. I think all the problems are due to overheating and/or Honda's trans fluid being not top quality? Honda has replaced its ATF-Z1 fluid with ATF DW-1 since 2002. Maybe it is better. Also, wouldn't it be a good idea to change the external fluid filter which maintenance schedules never mention. And, wouldn't it help to drain and refill the fluid on a regular basis? Or maybe upgrade the fluid cooler? My Odyssey has 165K miles with no trany problems yet. Knock on wood.
Quizá sea tarde ya, sin duda ninguna el aceite lo debe cambiar y el filtro si es exterior también , no sale todo , más ó menos la mitad pero así se hace y esto hara que su trasmisión dure y dure. Repita el cambio cada 60.000 km
Thank you for this video! I (and many others, I'm sure) would love to follow along as you go through the rebuild process on this or similar BGRA. I am certain we could all learn from your experience. Thanks!
Excellent tear down video.
Very well explained thank you for this presentation for this video.
Excellent video. It help me rebuild my transmission. Thank you very much. I recently rebuild this exact transmission (BYBA). I used the transtar kit with the surperior kit and sonnax end caps. I clean everything including the vavle bores. The only oring that I could not replace was the 3rd gear accumlater because it was stuck. Now I have a grinding or clatter noise in 3rd gear. Sounds like the clutches are clapping. I tried replacing the 3rd & 4th gear pressure switches. Oil came out of the 3rd but not the 4th. Is the stuck accumlater the reason for the grinding/clatter? And is oil surposed to come out of the pressure switch locations?
I know it's been some years now but what eventually happened. I've had 2 2004 odysseys and I think the main way to stop wear is to replace the outside filter and add a 2nd after market in line filter and change fluid more often. I just bought 1 with only 67,000mi and it does the same un smooth shift 50% of the time from 1st into 2nd and hesitates from park going into drive. My 1st odyssey had 175,000mi with the same problems but still worked ok. The other thing is the shift solenoids create priblems.
Nice work and high skill. Talk about a jigsaw puzzle. So true about flat rated, you would be lucky if an honest shop sent it out to someone like you to do it right.
New subscriber here... excellent step by step. Thank you for taking the time...
Welcome!
Dude...simply amazing work...how you learned to take these things apart and reassemble is impressive. Came here because I'm having a shop do exactly what you have done here...same tranny...168K...just now giving me shifting issues. THANKS!
these trannies have different shift characteristics for each clutch based on what the ECU orders.
If ECU thinks you're climbing a hill a hard shift will be ordered
if the ECU thinks you're cruising on a flat road then butter smooth shifts.
in other words bad shifts are not all the tranny's fault!!
HEAT is the ultimate enemy
Thanks for this wonderful video! It was of great help in overhauling my BYBA. One thing though-- did you mention to be darn sure the shift selector shaft is in neutral so it will not get pulled out with the case? I broke the shift detent thingy because I didn't notice it was binding up.
You transmission guys impress me with how you know exactly how every little piece goes together. I guess you have to do a bunch of them to get to that point.
You are insane!
I watched because I’m interested in getting a Odyssey as a daily, but had issues with my 2003 Acura TL Type-S and wanted to see if anyone came
up with a fix for the crappy Honda V6 transmissions yet....
the fix is to take it easy with power and replace ATF to maintain good clutch pressure.
Collapsed rubber O-rings cause low pressure and clutch slippage.
What a great informative video!!!! how can people dislike this at all, maybe good information on how things work Is just too scary for some!!
The people who dislike this video are the shops that he's exposing for what they are.
Question - I just replaced the transaxle in my Ridgeline (which uses a similar, though not same trans) with a used one with about 75k on it. It was clean and empty when installed (only filled with Honda ATF). It now has all forward gears, seems to shift fine, but no reverse. Seems to me the problem could only be caused by the reverse servo (solenoids are known-good/tested). Thanks. PS - great video, really informative. I appreciate it being direct and quick.
I think he has done this before. Amazing!
In fact you've made my day. I love the presentation
Thanks Master Hiram, happy Holidays to you and your family.
Nice video!! I need my 06 Odyssey rebuild. second gear is slipping like crazy.. I replaced the unit with a used one. No slipping gears but is flares little is going into 3rd and big time going into 4th... I have the old trans want another project? 😁
Awesome video. Keep posting .Well explained 2 thumbs up
Wow. You’re amazing hands down. I wish you’re closer to LA. I would come to your shop.
Saludos , muy buen vídeo, cres que puedas hacer uno con una reparación completa de transmisión de Odyssey 2006 , tengo una y quisiera repararla yo mismo GRACIAS.
was the issue the filter? I have the same exact probleb with a 03 odyssey. I rebuilt it. I have rebuilt 5 of the BYBA units before with the full transtar kit as I did on this one. Ive never had an issue before and I replaced the filter and I know the oring was intact. I'm very stumped. Do you have any other suggestions? It felt like deja vu watching this video! But I'm still at a lost. The valvebody was clean.
Im Speechless i take my Hat off mad Respect.
I would love to see a teardown and rebuild of the AW81-40lE transmision
Where are you located, just to pass by and get some of your knowledge, I always wanted to fix a transmission, your a very good mechanic, skills great video thanks for sharing your knowledge,
Top professional and skillful workmanship. Thanks for sharing knowledge!
Dude you are the man they need more people like you. I have a 05 honda odyssey touring had transmission problems it broke on the highway on the way to Florida my with me towing it the shop supposed to be completely rebuild cost me 3500+ we got back home to Indiana start leaking fluid one year later transmission is out. And i have a question can a 05 and 06 transmission can be swap? Thank you need opinion please
Hi! Watched your videos on the BYBA. VERY helpful. Rebuilt mine, now getting P0740 code. Solenoid changed with a used one. Where to look next? Thinking of buying a new solenoid. Maybe bad remanned torque converter? No other codes. Shifts good. Only get code when in overdrive. Thanks!
another awesome video. thanks so much, keep them coming!
Hi I got a transmission for Honda odyssey gear not shifting I Tear down and changed the complete overhaul kit.
and Installed it back in car but still it is not moving I removed the cooler hose to check but there was no oil circulating so I changed the converter and tried but still the same problem . How can I diagnose this problem & If I TearDown again how can I check the oil line circulating.
Presente tribu no había visto este video gracias jefe de tribu
I have a 2000 Odyssey which had a recently rebuilt transmission when I bought it 2 years ago. Now with just 20K miles, it has a "shutter" when under load, usually at high speeds, around 60 mph. I took it back to the shop that rebuilt it, and they changed the fluid, and said that "might" fix the problem. It did not. He said it might be the torque converter. The warranty was only for a year. Any ideas? Maybe he told me that because he knows he did not change the torque converter when he rebuilt the trans; I am assuming he rebuilt it as cheap as possible so the owner could sell the van ... I don't think the van is worth putting another trans into ... unless I can fix it myself or find a cheaper way ... any thoughts?
@Philip DeCicco What was the diagnosis of the shutter issue?
hyram is the best I have learned a great deal of knowledge from him and I continue learning from him he is never boring
I know it’s an older video but thanks for sharing.😊👍
Codes P9080 and P0974 for the solenoid A and C on 2006 Odyssey. Everyone says transmission needs to be changed. Nobody is trying to remove and replace the solenoids or pressure switch... What do you think?
You sir are an amazing mechanic! I'm totally impressed! I have a 2004 accord v6 (BAYA). I'm starting to have trouble with it. I want YOU to rebuild it for sure. I'm in New Orleans, where is your shop? Ballpark figure to do a complete rebuild like this? Thanks for the great video!
Hiram, do you have an idea what would cause this transmission to not go into any gear when at operating temp? I have a 2006 and it works great cold, but once the engine warms up it won't go into any gear, and you can hear a sound coming from trans. similar to a hydraulic pump whining.
Thanks
Torque converter?
6.5 Coyote filter is dirty due to contamination of fluid
When will you have a video putting this BYBA back together? Awesome video sir!
Awesome video again Hiram, your the best and Happy Thanksgiving.
27:07 coolest screwdriver toss/flick ever! Thank me later 😎
It makes more sense when it's a knife
i watch it all thanks for this video, you mentioned doing the translab shift kit, do they really work and if so how much more can one expect from it?
but this vid is very detailed thanks a lot
OMGOODNESS this guy has incredible memory...genius man..I was lost after 10th bolt...very interesting...the men who invented automatic transmissions is definitely a genius...holy moly
Great Job! did not see the tear down before!
I love the way you do your work. Great Job. The Odyssey tranny is a nightmare but you make it look so easy.
nice video cant wait to re-build my first honda auto trans
excellent videos, thank you for posting all this transmission stuff :)
Thanks so much for your detailed movies. can you suggest me please, : i got an engine off 2006 Odyssey with 205000 miles, when turned on, driving was fine in all speeds, except 1-2 seconds late shift from 1th gear to 2th and also 10-12 seconds rear gear. i opened linear solenoid & the filters was so dirty, after cleaned the car was great for near 200 miles, then same, I opened again the linear solenoid and saw the same, the filter was clogged. this time i changed oil and filters also. but the oil from auto parts non-Honda ATF, after start the transmission was much worst! 5-15 seconds late in 1th , 2th gears and very slippery in 1th also. i added some Lucas and got better in late shifting but worst in slippery! ... then i drained 4 litter oil and added Honda ATF-DW1 oil, this time better than all the time! just some rear gear late response. i change again the oil to be better flash! and suddenly got worst! i don't see too much metals and i sense i don't have internal mechanical issues. anytime is very bad i have P0746 & P0777. any suggestion? best.
Wow!! Your the man. I have a 2002 Honda accord that binds when in reverse and cant go more than a few feet in reverse. any ideals. Thanks for the Video very impressed with your knowledge.
This guy is a bad boy with these transmissions. I wanna be like him one day.
You can start with mine 😃 😂 lol.
Great stuff, very knowledgeable, keep it coming. You make it look so easy.
Hiram, I just rebuilt this transmission actually (01 acura cl 5 speed BGFA) pretty much the same. Rebuild is fine but this is the second time I have done a honda transmission that the secondary shaft will not torque into place. Pretty much every one I have done has one thread showing on the shafts after nuts are installed and torqued. The first one I installed and didn't know, after everything seated I had to pull trans again and re-torque nuts. I don't want to do that again. Anything I should look for? Main and counter shafts came up fine but the secondary shaft won't. I'm talking about 1/16 . I took pictures before I took it apart and I know it's not up. I am going to pull back apart to see if I can find anything. Any pointers would be appreciated.
How cleverly do you manage to disassemble the gearbox. Tell me, what kind of oil is better to fill in this box?
Thank you Hiram for another good video! Happy Thanksgiving!
Hi there Hiram, I just suscribed to your channel and started watching your great videos, I mostly work on engines and brakes, and would like to start doing transmission am sure I'll learn a lot from your vids, cheers from Mexico city.
Thanks for the videos, Merry Christmas!🎄🎅
Hiram what's how you doing bro. just a big big question bro 😀 where is the video when you build back together the BYBA transmission brother 😂😂😂 you'll be a life saver brother😄
just teardowns
