SpaceX Drone Ship Landing in KSP 1.3 - Ep 64 - Kerbal Space Program

  • SpaceX Drone Ship Landing videos are a favourite for all of us. So what better way to celebrate Elon Musk than to try to badly mirror SpaceX's real life achievements. Of course we are doing this in KSP using a few added mods. Firstly, kOS for the scriptable component. Secondly using the Kerbal Reusability Expansion (KRE) mod.
    This tutorial mission captured in KSP (Kerbal Space Program) 1.3.1.

    Hi everyone! I really hope you enjoy this. I spent gosh knows how many hours getting all this scripted, tested and running. Sorry I have been a little more inactive than usual. Christmas / New Year and annual leave all keep me pretty darn busy this time of year. Everyone have a safe and Happy New Year! Lets all have a great 2018!!!

      Another great video...don't know if I would have the patients to work on scripting...lol...would most likely say to heck with it & just fly it myself...lol
      (loved the fact you added the out-takes)
      Hope you have a great day & be safe.

      That's cool. Presumably you used control theory to do this. I built an auto-balancing waypoint-following quad-drone in Garry's Mod this way, but it didn't work on multiplayer, sadly due to timing issues.

    Wow, amazing programming! The “bloopers” were quite entertaining, but the successful landings were satisfying to watch. Happy New Years Marcus!

    • @MarcusHouse
      @MarcusHouse  7 років тому +3

      Oh believe me... there were plenty more bloopers where those came from. Getting the landing when doing a polar launch was tougher then a landing out to the east. You also have a great New Years mate. Hope you have a wonderful few days.

    Love it! I said in a previous vid that the VAB landing would take some beating - well an ocean-barge landing from a polar-orientated orbital path, in a mission representing a real-world analogue does it nicely! I'm amazed again, sir! Thank you for the hard work!

    • @MarcusHouse
      @MarcusHouse  7 років тому

      +K1lostream Thanks mate. VAB landing was equally difficult due to the awkward mass and much higher velocity. Think the polar orbit added just a little complexity to this.

    Oooh they made a JRTI drone ship:D I really enjoyed all these attempts, especially the ones bugged few meters above the deck :P I wish I already achieved porting krpc-node to the new protobuf version, but I was also very busy lately and haven't got enough time to dig that issue.. Anyway, I'll get back those SpaceX legs (and the droneship!) on my configuration and once the protocol fixed i'll do some attempts :P
    How stage 2 is managed after decoupling? kOS is able to handle them simultaneously? I'm very curious about this point, because the next level would be Falcon Heavy or also a remake of Iridium launches hehe!
    Anyway, take care and happy new year! ;)

    Is your playload controlled by kOS too ? If yes, do you need to focus on the playload to read the script? I also work on that type of rocket but when the launcher is separate from the playload, the script of the playload stop and it doesn't reach the orbit and crash. I'm actually searching after solutions...

      Damn, code... I hope i'll be able to grasp that. For a long time i dreamt of a KSP-style game, where you'd only design and program the ships, but not directly fly them. I love the kind of games, where you setup something to the tiniest detail, then just click the button, run it and watch events unfold. Unfortunately, there's not that many of them. I loved the original Rainbow Six games, i love Space Chem (not so much Infinifactory). And although it's not exactly this particular type of game I also love Duskers, Deadnaut, Rimworld...

    My guess is that for better accuracy and fuel efficiency, you should use your engines less and your grid fins a lot more. The problem is that when you use your engine in the atmosphere, if you aim it to thrust in one horizontal direction the aerodynamics of the rocket will push you in the opposite direction... If you do a longer 1 engine landing burn you should be able to aim using aerodynamics quite precisely, and then just do a basic vertical suicide burn.

      +pafnutiytheartist Was a bit of a mess as I hadn't cleaned up code for easy reading. I do want to do a followup on this though.

      You should still share it so some of us can clean it up ;)

    The real falcon is too powerful to hover even with a single engine at minimum thrust. It is quite interesting (and difficult) trying to replicate their hoverslam.

    can't believe you put the grid fins upside down

    • @MarcusHouse
      @MarcusHouse  7 років тому

      They actually go on that way by default which is a pest. I hadn't spotted it. LOL. In the next vid they are the correct way up.

    Fantastic video, especially the "realistic" camera angle! One little nitpick: the grid fins are upside down. Any specific reason for that?

    • @MarcusHouse
      @MarcusHouse  7 років тому +1

      Yes a very good reason. I was stupid. :)
      The mod actually places them upside down by default and I didn't notice. You will see the more recent Falcon Heavy video had them the correct way up. Just remember you need to reverse them if trying this yourself.

    Haha I actually felt like I was watching a space x landing. Very impressive as always. Hey Marcus! Whenever I'm using kos mod for launching a craft into orbit my fps drops to about 15 fps. Any tips on how to not experience drop in fps? Once the program ends the game returns to 30 fps in an instant

    • @MarcusHouse
      @MarcusHouse  7 років тому

      +niteshmurti I get a fair frame drop too I am pretty sure. Trajectories can take a lot of fps as well I think.

  • @SamWarren

    Very noice, but can you do it without throttling the engines? SpaceX keep the engines on max for the entire suicide burn. :P

    • @MarcusHouse
      @MarcusHouse  7 років тому

      Problem is that nothing in the stock game is similar. Atmosphereic drag is way to low, vessel weight way too high and engines way to low thrust (should be able to suicide burn with just one engine etc). More work needs to be done. Am working towards being able to do this with realism overhaul so at least it is more to a real life scale.

    • @SamWarren
      @SamWarren 7 років тому

      Marcus House Ah right sounds cool! I found a script on the interwebs a little while ago that did the suicide burn automatically on full throttle on any vessel after a lottle tweaking. It would be so the velocity of the vessel reaches 0 at exactly when it touched the landing target. Unfortunately my pc is broken at the mo so I cant retrieve it but it's somewhere on a ksp forum about retrograde landings.

    • @yassm
      @yassm 7 років тому

      Sam Warren That's not true. It would be almost impossible to do a fill thrust suicide burn in real life. The Merlin 1D can throttle as low as 36 or 38 %.

    why 3 landing legs? F9 has 4 iirc, and the gridfins should deploy earlier. Still, incredibly awesome creation!

    • @MarcusHouse
      @MarcusHouse  7 років тому

      +MrTomyCJ Hmmm. Actually you are right... I must have screwed up the symmetry before recording. Good eye! Also I've been told the grid fins are upside down as well. That seems to be a bug with the mods placement. LOL. Will do another one and keep making it better. Also want to do it with RO at some point.
