SpaceX Drone Ship Landing in KSP 1.3 - Ep 64 - Kerbal Space Program
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- SpaceX Drone Ship Landing videos are a favourite for all of us. So what better way to celebrate Elon Musk than to try to badly mirror SpaceX's real life achievements. Of course we are doing this in KSP using a few added mods. Firstly, kOS for the scriptable component. Secondly using the Kerbal Reusability Expansion (KRE) mod.
This tutorial mission captured in KSP (Kerbal Space Program) 1.3.1.

Hi everyone! I really hope you enjoy this. I spent gosh knows how many hours getting all this scripted, tested and running. Sorry I have been a little more inactive than usual. Christmas / New Year and annual leave all keep me pretty darn busy this time of year. Everyone have a safe and Happy New Year! Lets all have a great 2018!!!
Awesome! Can we also get the script?
No worries MH...you & your family come 1st...enjoy yourself & hope you have a very Happy New Year!
Another great video...don't know if I would have the patients to work on scripting...lol...would most likely say to heck with it & just fly it myself...lol
(loved the fact you added the out-takes)
Hope you have a great day & be safe.
Marcus House you do know about the Community tab right?
You haven't posted anything there..
Marcus House do the falcon heavy boosters with the center core but crash the center core because it did crash
That's cool. Presumably you used control theory to do this. I built an auto-balancing waypoint-following quad-drone in Garry's Mod this way, but it didn't work on multiplayer, sadly due to timing issues.
Look, that's not an "explosion"
It's just a rapid unscheduled disassembly
SpyTheGamerX Haha, I got the reference
Very clever...
love that vid

Wow, amazing programming! The “bloopers” were quite entertaining, but the successful landings were satisfying to watch. Happy New Years Marcus!
Oh believe me... there were plenty more bloopers where those came from. Getting the landing when doing a polar launch was tougher then a landing out to the east. You also have a great New Years mate. Hope you have a wonderful few days.
ua-cam.com/video/bvim4rsNHkQ/v-deo.html
Love it! I said in a previous vid that the VAB landing would take some beating - well an ocean-barge landing from a polar-orientated orbital path, in a mission representing a real-world analogue does it nicely! I'm amazed again, sir! Thank you for the hard work!
+K1lostream Thanks mate. VAB landing was equally difficult due to the awkward mass and much higher velocity. Think the polar orbit added just a little complexity to this.
Some of the failures you had in the blooper are kinda similar to the ones SpaceX had too! :)
+Ryan Bale Yep... That was half the fun. 😀
almost like he specifically picked them, ya know, since it's a video entirely dedicated to copying what they do...
@@MarcusHouse Yep
I just wanted to thank you for striving to keep as close to stock as possible. I only have console Kerbal, so it is nice to see ships that I can modify slightly for the games limitations. Happy gaming and new year!
+Adam Kellam Glad you enjoyed it mate. Happy New Year!
SpaceX style landing on a drone ship in KSP? Can’t wait to finish this!
Thanks for watching mate. I hope you enjoy it.
Very cool how the rocket did that mid-air "drift" to actually go to the drone ship at like 100 or less meters lol. Loved this video!
+GamingJose cheers mate. 😀
can you do it again Marcus? but this time with a boostback burn back to the launch pad?
Stay tuned :)
Always!
YAY 😃
Waiting for Elon Musk's comment :D
I don't think I'd be lucky enough to get tweeted by him twice in my life. :)
Marcus House when was the first time? Do you have a link
+Niels Peter Christensen twitter.com/elonmusk/status/782410047011819520
+Niels Peter Christensen That was a nice day. Not often you get Tweeted to millions of people by your idol. 😀
I can imagine
Dude. I don't comment often, but that is absolutely amazing. I can't imagine how many hours you poured into that, and I hope you're as proud of the result as I am to show it to my friends.
Way to go, Marcus !
+Laélien Rivière Thanks mate. Yes it has been loads of work and I'm making it better all the time. You may also be interested in the recent kOS Mun mission if you haven't seen it.
SENPAI NOTICED ME \o/
Dear Marcus, of course I have ! But the sense of reality and the effort you put into the camera works to make it look like the real thing was just top notch there. Really insane work.
You are awesome Marcus!!!! 10:40 was a superb addition to the video
the amount these bloopers resembles actual spacex failed landing is hilarious
I’m so hyped for the falcon heavy!
IKR!!! Did you see the pics of it standing? Fingers crossed for the static fire coming up.
Not Applicable it did fly yesterday
External boosters successfully landed, main engine crashed into the ocean.
It didn't crash, it just landed 100m away from the ship at 300mph
lol that was the greatest launch ever, those booster rockets landing was just perfect
Fire time I have seen a Rocket water skiing. LOL. Great job.
🤣landing rockets iiiiisss hard 😂laughed out when you did a horizontal correction hovering about 🤣
20 Flat-Kerbalers dislike this video!
Strap those 20 on to the fuselage of the rocket!
Daniel Pogosyan no put them on the rocket that kerbal nasa is bringing to the sun
Now its 79
Not bad for 2 years!

Awesome video man, I just love how you put it all together. This looked like FUN. Now you've inspired me to learn KOS, damn you!
+ColdWelder Have fun mate. Also you want to join the kOS Discord. It is very good to be able to chat with others in there.
Excellent work, By far the best KSP rendition of this procedure.
Wait till the next one. Trying now with Real Solar System and Realism Overhaul. This means perfect Suicide burn required as a single Merlin engine is too high power when at minimum throttle to hover. This is much harder.
Stay tuned :)
12:40 looks exactly like spaceX's failure in their "how not to land an orbital rocket booster" video at 1:36 when they ran out of propellant
I love the hovering before touchdown, makes it look so kerbal :D
+Nessus 😀
I like how your failures matched up almost perfectly with all the ways SpaceX failed to land their rocket(s).
I Love the SPACE X Starship
I just got the game. Enjoying it even though I don’t know a lot. Saw this video and thought that craft was pretty cool! Plus 1 sub
Have a good and healthy new year!
I had most of fun on your Outtakes on your Channel. Keep up the great work and have much of fun!
You too mate and thanks for watching! :)
How not to land a rocket: Marcus House edition
**Excessive amount of unplanned rapid disassembly included*
"The droneship has just popped up into existence"
Oh.
You always sound so happy when your rockets automatically touch down :)
What an awesome way for a job application at SpaceX ;)
Looked similar to Elon's blooper reel. Well done Mr House!
"failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor" truman capote
This is awesome. Next challenge: falcon heavy. Double booster landing would be dope asf
+Lewis Massie Challenge accepted.
Those hypersonic fins on top are upsidedown placed o,O)
Oooooo droneship landing
Hell yea! :) It was so much fun.
You’ve gotta love “of course we still love you”
Another happy landing.
AwesOME! you should try to land a space shuttle vertically in ksp
Now that sounds tough.
You're a very clever man Mr. House, Happy New Year!
To you too mate :)
Should have used the Liberty Bell March on the blooper reel. Other than that, awesome work!
+jocax188723 😀
Good stuff, I would love to learn how to use KOS. Also have a great new year :) EDIT: just had a thought, the next generation of Falcon is apparently not going to need the landing gear, they think they have the accuracy down pat now so won't need them, try that :)
+Ted Cameron The BFR! I love the idea of this thing. Although it isn't supposed to have landing legs it will have a launch mount to land into. Making this in KSP is a great idea. I'll need to have a play.
Oooh they made a JRTI drone ship:D I really enjoyed all these attempts, especially the ones bugged few meters above the deck :P I wish I already achieved porting krpc-node to the new protobuf version, but I was also very busy lately and haven't got enough time to dig that issue.. Anyway, I'll get back those SpaceX legs (and the droneship!) on my configuration and once the protocol fixed i'll do some attempts :P
How stage 2 is managed after decoupling? kOS is able to handle them simultaneously? I'm very curious about this point, because the next level would be Falcon Heavy or also a remake of Iridium launches hehe!
Anyway, take care and happy new year! ;)
u are so underrated
Dude this is so awesome! Great job!
This was beautiful!
+bennyfactor Glad you liked it mate.
Is your playload controlled by kOS too ? If yes, do you need to focus on the playload to read the script? I also work on that type of rocket but when the launcher is separate from the playload, the script of the playload stop and it doesn't reach the orbit and crash. I'm actually searching after solutions...
That's incredible!
12:20 This is exactly the history of Space X
Marcus needs to let SpaceX have access to his latest scripts...
does the same KOS script work for equatorial launches as well as polar orbit launches or would you have to tweak it?
+dregerclock Should be exactly the same. Drobeship just needs to be places roughly the same distance away. Launch script is targeting the Drobeship direction as soon as it lifts off.
that is cool. Enjoyed the video.. love SpaceX too
Good landing
There's a mod that lets you program flight maneuvres ahead of time and then just sit and watch the launches like IRL? OMG I GOTTA HAVE THAT!!!
Yup! kOS mod! :)
Enjoy. Great fun and you can learn some cool code.
Damn, code... I hope i'll be able to grasp that. For a long time i dreamt of a KSP-style game, where you'd only design and program the ships, but not directly fly them. I love the kind of games, where you setup something to the tiniest detail, then just click the button, run it and watch events unfold. Unfortunately, there's not that many of them. I loved the original Rainbow Six games, i love Space Chem (not so much Infinifactory). And although it's not exactly this particular type of game I also love Duskers, Deadnaut, Rimworld...
That landing though...
HitchensImmortal - wasn't it, though!!
Great video, needs more rapid unscheduled disassembly, but great video.
Nice video as always, awesome work to get the script to work! Have a good year 2018!
+Joe Guitars Thanks Joe. You too mate.
Hahaha cool! It's like "How not ti land an orbital booster" by SpaceX
Highly recommend you check out this weekends video. Full Falcon Heavy in Realism Overhaul and Real Solar System(plenty of bloopers on that one too). Currently editing. :) Thanks for watching!
Of course!! You got one more sub
A-friggin-mazing! Thank you!
+Dan Pettersson Thanks for watching Dan.
I'm more interested in the KoS Script tbh than the ship. Does it adjust to payload or do they all have to have the same mass? (same burn length?)
Nice work!
I wish you happy new year Marcus! :)
SpaceX has done it many times. It looks so easy and routine but that is so difficult.
Golly THAT'S BLOODY GORGEUS !!!
Ha! Cheers mate. Also working on something else...but that is much more difficult due to limitations in both trajectories and kOS mods. Working on a solution for that problem.
btw marc can you do a tutorial on how to create kOS script
This playlist may contain something that you are interested in: ua-cam.com/play/PLY4XNTtbpFqh2Og-TGzYSfiU5dp0H132L.html
that is simply impressive.
+Skythedragon Cheers mate. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Landing a rocket was the best thing I ever did in KSP apart from deleting the universe by going trillions of times the speed of light.
That was amazing.
+I'm Not Good With Names 😀
My guess is that for better accuracy and fuel efficiency, you should use your engines less and your grid fins a lot more. The problem is that when you use your engine in the atmosphere, if you aim it to thrust in one horizontal direction the aerodynamics of the rocket will push you in the opposite direction... If you do a longer 1 engine landing burn you should be able to aim using aerodynamics quite precisely, and then just do a basic vertical suicide burn.
Very impressive!
Hey um u inspired me to ksp so I Wasted my birthday money in it but It was on steam so I couldn’t get glorious mods so um Thanks for existing
Hey mate "wasted"? So you do have it on Steam? Witht he Steam version you can still download all the mods you want. This is how I play it as well (I've got it on Steam).
Well I try to but it does not work maybe it’s my computer it’s old and it lag a lot on the game but I get use to it I try to make that I did but it’s the Falcon9 heavy and I see the misspelled word it’s with
I have been placing my grid fins folding upwards (convex looking at them side on) but I notice yours fold downwards (concave looking side on) have I put mine on wrong way round?
Does the second stage work with KSP's default physics range? Like does second stage end up in orbit before you get too far into the atmosphere?
+MadMerlyn No sadly. I need to quickly switch back to get it to orbit while stage 1 is coasting between burns. Wish that wasn't the case though.
How cool is that..? Very well done! Can you elaborate more on the logic behind your landing script? I once tried (and failed) to solve the mars-lander codingame - which is just in 2D - and I‘m cursious how you did it :)
Yo it’s the riming pirate.
This is so neat!
Wooooahh my god Marcus, you had me on the edge of my seat in that landing! I like how realistic the rocket you built is considering the stock parts used. I reeeeally need that grid fins mod... Is that part of the "Space Y" Modpack?
Oh! And happy new year Marcus :)
+James Mantovani Thanks mate. Have a great New Years Eve tonight. The MOD is KRE Kerbal reusability expansion.
Have you seen the Blue Origin test vehicle landing? It's bloody terrifying the way it does the suicide burn to land.
It does look like a rough landing, however the Russian Soyuz lands in the same kind of way. Very very quick landing retro burn right on touchdown. Looks super violent but apparently much smoother than it appears. Kind of like a controlled accident. LOL
Yeah, that last quarter-second BLAM drops the speed to 1kph to land.
It's less of a suicide burn and more of an explosive pillow.
How did you attach the vector engines? I didn't see an actual part.
This is more of a beefy Saturn V rather than a Falcon 9. ;p
Also: The FH is vertical!
+The Rare Pepe Can't wait for Falcon heavy.
Hopefully, it doesn't explode.
Will you publish your kos script for this thing?
+pafnutiytheartist Was a bit of a mess as I hadn't cleaned up code for easy reading. I do want to do a followup on this though.
You should still share it so some of us can clean it up ;)
The real falcon is too powerful to hover even with a single engine at minimum thrust. It is quite interesting (and difficult) trying to replicate their hoverslam.
This is just awesome.
Thanks mate.
What I find funny is how much your mistake resemble the earlier landings of SpaceX.
can't believe you put the grid fins upside down
They actually go on that way by default which is a pest. I hadn't spotted it. LOL. In the next vid they are the correct way up.
Fantastic video, especially the "realistic" camera angle! One little nitpick: the grid fins are upside down. Any specific reason for that?
Yes a very good reason. I was stupid. :)
The mod actually places them upside down by default and I didn't notice. You will see the more recent Falcon Heavy video had them the correct way up. Just remember you need to reverse them if trying this yourself.
Great Video! I was wondering if you would tell me what mod(s) you were using to make Kerbin look so good?
+Liam Karlson EVE and Scatterer.
5:53 Is the autopilot a mod?
It would be great if you used the same music SpaceX used for their "blooper reel"
How do you get the animated cloud layer? I've looked everywhere and I can't find it.
+Christy Daly It is the EVE mod.
just an fyi, the grid fins you put on are upside down, im suprised you still had relatively decent control
Hi Marcus, what is the droneship mod you are using?
+Jack Liu KRE... Kerbal Reusability Expansion
1. There is supposed to be 4 landing legs 2. Your grid fins are upside down
Haha I actually felt like I was watching a space x landing. Very impressive as always. Hey Marcus! Whenever I'm using kos mod for launching a craft into orbit my fps drops to about 15 fps. Any tips on how to not experience drop in fps? Once the program ends the game returns to 30 fps in an instant
+niteshmurti I get a fair frame drop too I am pretty sure. Trajectories can take a lot of fps as well I think.
ah okay that sucks! wish that didn't happen though :(
Would it be possible to include the kOS script?
U made sure you've plugged the accelerometer up-right?
Very noice, but can you do it without throttling the engines? SpaceX keep the engines on max for the entire suicide burn. :P
Problem is that nothing in the stock game is similar. Atmosphereic drag is way to low, vessel weight way too high and engines way to low thrust (should be able to suicide burn with just one engine etc). More work needs to be done. Am working towards being able to do this with realism overhaul so at least it is more to a real life scale.
Marcus House Ah right sounds cool! I found a script on the interwebs a little while ago that did the suicide burn automatically on full throttle on any vessel after a lottle tweaking. It would be so the velocity of the vessel reaches 0 at exactly when it touched the landing target. Unfortunately my pc is broken at the mo so I cant retrieve it but it's somewhere on a ksp forum about retrograde landings.
Sam Warren That's not true. It would be almost impossible to do a fill thrust suicide burn in real life. The Merlin 1D can throttle as low as 36 or 38 %.
This is awesome :D
why 3 landing legs? F9 has 4 iirc, and the gridfins should deploy earlier. Still, incredibly awesome creation!
+MrTomyCJ Hmmm. Actually you are right... I must have screwed up the symmetry before recording. Good eye! Also I've been told the grid fins are upside down as well. That seems to be a bug with the mods placement. LOL. Will do another one and keep making it better. Also want to do it with RO at some point.
Impressive!
I love this so much
Start at 4:30
Very nice
Could you make another video explaining how you built it and how it works?
You do know about the Community tab in YT right?
You haven't posted anything there..
