  • Here is my honest review of two products by The Ordinary.
Disclaimer, I am not saying that all of their products are bad or will cause a reaction, this is just my experience and I know everyone reacts differently to products.
The Ordinary products broke me out!! I am so sad that I had a reaction to this product so I wanted to share my honest opinion because I did not see a single bad comment about this product until I experienced a bad reaction myself.

Same! I couldn't believe the niacinamide was making me break out when I read all of these hundreds of amazing reviews! After 2 months of using the product, my skin had never been worse; my skin actually broke out more! So glad it's not just me.
Edit: Please don't wait around if your acne is bad, go and see a doctor or a medical professional who may be able to help. I waited so long to finally see someone because I thought I could clear it up myself or by using products such as this, that I actually caused more damage. If I had seen someone sooner I could have saved myself so much hyperpigmentation and skin textual scarring, now I finally have and my skin is slowly starting to clear up, but only with the help of CLINICALLY PRESCRIBED medication. If your acne is moderate to severe, or doesn't go away using over-the-counter products, don't try to play the guessing game and go and see a doctor/nurse/medical professional.

      GUYS.
For all the people saying that their skin started to break out after using Niacinamide: first of all make sure that your skin is breaking out and not purging. When skin purges, it means that those tiny little red bumps on the skin are just normal and that’s the first phase to get a clearer skin. The product it’s just accelerating the skin cells renewing process getting rid of all the dead skin cells that have always been stuck inside the skin. Keep patience and you’ll be satisfied with the result.

Be careful! If you buy online from ebay or Amazon it could be a fake! You don't really know WHERE its coming from & how thru made it. There's several videos of the fake bottles coming out of China. Buy directly from their website, Ulta or sephora & that's it. Real niacinamide is an antioxidant so it's not supposed to irritate or break you out👍

Minoshi I waited so long and unfortunately it made my skin the worse it has ever been in my life. I only used it to help clear up a few recurring areas of spots but it made my entire face breakout, including places I had never had a single spot on. It just didn’t work for me, everyone’s skin is different and it didn’t make sense for me to keep using it. Once I stopped, my skin went back to normal, and I wasn’t even abusing the product when I was using it

Guysss , if it is red then this means your skin is purging . It typically happens when you are using a new product that your skin doesn’t really know . Give it sometime and then you will see a difference . If it has been around a month and this is still happening this is NOT purging . So I recommend discontinuing the product . 😊

chiang sean Your mother is right, but The Ordinary is actually a good line.
The reason why it’s so affordable is because they don’t make their packaging pretty or unique, unlike other brands, so you’re not paying for the packaging. That’s probably the biggest thing amongst most pricey skincare products. It’s cheap to make, and still good, but they inflate their prices and you end up paying for the product that was affordable to begin with, the packaging, and the brand name.
You notice the same thing with the inkey list.
Most skincare products shouldnt cost what they cost today. Just because something is more expensive, doesn’t mean it’s better or of better quality. Sometimes it’s just a waste of money on your part.
That said, I don’t mean cheaper products are always better. I like Paulas Choice but WOW they are pricey, and they have the same ingredients the ordinary has.
Anyways, sorry TO didnt work for you! Which one did you use?

Hey Guys! I’m 30 years old and had acne since my 20’s. I’ve started the ORDINARY for the first time in my life three days ago. I agree that it made me some breakouts so I freaked and finally found this video and tried to read some comments. Some people said that they contacted Ordinary about this issue. It looks like ORDINARY mentioned that their skin is probably purging. I didn’t know what purging was so I made some researches and found out that anytime you start using a new product, the brand doesn’t matter, your skin will purge like this. Meaning that, the products we are using are not familar and the skin tries to get use to and try to DETOX. The products we are using are going deep and cleans the root of our pores which then lead to all the bacterias to come up to the surface which is good thing. It actually start clearing all of your pores. What happens when it clears your pores? Bacterias are coming to the surface right? Then it lead to purging. Thats positive! So I decided to continue the niacia.. the Buffet.. Gycol.. and everything I just bought. I will give it a chance and you should too. It will purge for about a month and we all are in lockdown so try to start again your skin routine. Since we are limited to go out, I try not to go out during the day so no sunlight! Try not to wear makeup for about a month. Let your skin breath.. if you go out buy a sunscreen. Other than that I think that we should not freakout and give some products a chance. I found this website and thats how I learned about purging and breakout. Hope this helps! www.truselforganics.com/blogs/news/skin-purging-or-breaking-out

This is partially true. Yes, skin can purge when you introduce new products if they contain ingredients that clean pores and renew skin cells (like AHA, BHA, Retinoil..) but not all new ingredients should make you purge (Niacinamide is one of them), sometimes your skin will just break out and you have to move to another product.

    • @morganhirschi913
      @morganhirschi913 4 роки тому +10

The only products that will ever make your skin “purge” are actives that cause skin cell turnover such as BHA, AHA, and retinols. If you’re experiencing a “purge” from any other products, this isn’t a purge at all. The products are making your break out or giving you an allergic reaction.

Hi guys, Its been 3 weeks now, I started to have a better looking younger skin since my skin got used to the products. My scars have diminished a little bit. My wrinkles diminished as well. My skin looks healthier than ever. My pores are way better. However, I added few acids to my routine this week so I started to breakout again since the products are new. I got few cystic acne because of the addition of new products but I will continue my routine. I am also using too many products at the same time from ordinary which is perhaps not good. I will cut some products but I need to test which one is working and which one don't. But overral I am satisfied and will def continue my routine. I'm testing these products to really see if these things really work. I'll keep you posted

The thing is, was it a purge or an allergic reaction? I dunno if you know this, but it’s normal for your skin to react to new products as the skin has to become used to it. It has to become worse before it gets better. “purging is when your akin is adjusting to the new product, and persevering with the product will eventually make your skin better. In fact, the sudden crop of pimples means that it’s working as intended. A regular breakout is when your skin is reacting because it’s sensitive to an ingredient in the product.” Breakouts are normal. Be patient for one skin cycle, aka 28 days which is bow long the skin takes to renew it self. “generally speaking, dermatologists say purging should be over within 4-6 weeks of starting a new skin care regimen. If your purge lasts longer than 6 weeks, stop using the product, and consult a dermatologist! Did you do a patch test? Did you research what products not to combine it with etc? Unless it’s unbearable pain, and a clear allergic reaction, I wouldn’t stop using it because the skin will and should clear. This is why many fail when it comes to both skin care and hair, because they give up too soon. Also if you use several products in a routine, eliminate one after an other until you find out which products that causes the discomfort. If you’re new to acids etc. it’s normal for your skin to react...

At the longest, some people faces take 28 days to completely purge so I would have honestly stuck with the product until 28 days however i do understand circumstances and other things happening which I wouldn’t want to look bad with a lot of acne. If both products, especially the moisturizer keeps drying out your skin, you may have dry skin because you know if your skin is dry if it absorbs too quickly. So, id just recommend a strong moisturizer if anything. However listen to your skin! You know your skin the best. I would recommend the AHA ordinary product which is actually pretty good. The ordinary niacinimide on my skin purged for a couple days (around 10), getting really bad and then completely cleared up. Also, i would not recommend witch hazel on anyones face because it is a very drying product so if you do have dry skin it will dry so much up. The redness probably went down because of the aloe vera. I would need to see the product list and try it myself but for the most part I dont think that would be a good idea. Witch hazel is really too harsh for skin but if its low on the ingredient list, its probably not that bad.

Yeah, same. Except it didn't break me out - as in caused comedones etc, but straight up burned my skin - I'm talking severe inflammation, I'm trying to repair the damage by obsessively moisturizing now but not sure if the redness will go away completely. I used ONLY niacinamide and washed my face before it with only water, no other active ingredients. This isn't their fault though, I HAVE to say that, I'm sure this could be a gread product for the majority of people but I have contact dermatitis and an overly sensitive skin. If anyone else has the same - beware. As "soothing" as vitB3 is supposed to be (there are no clinical trials to even prove it's effectiveness though), this is a very high percentage that an oversensitive epidermis may react very badly to.

Hi hun, here's just a thought:
It looked like you put the pipette directly on the back of your hand. If that really was the case and you're doing the same thing when you apply the serum to your face, it might be a cause of breakouts. The pipette should never touch any skin, that's to prevent getting bacteria into the bottle. In the worst case you might just be spreading bacteria from the bottle, and with each use gather even more bacteria with the pipette.
Also, what other skin care do you use? Do you have a good cleansing system? Those are all factors that might be contributing to uneven skin. And be careful with witch hazel, if in high concentrations it can really dry out your skin.
If you cancelled out all other factors and this niacinimide serum really didn't work for you I'm really sorry and I hope you've found something better :)

GUYS if u use too much of one of the ordinary products it will irritate your skin (always start with a little or else you'll develop an allergy to the product), try lessening the amount you use. for example niacinamide or any other active ingredients that are meant to prevent acne, can lead to your skin purging (you might breakout before it gets better, as it brings up all the dormant acne to the surface). unfortunately this can last up to 4-6 weeks. it's up to u to continue using it or not. you'll really know if the product is good or not after you've used it for at least 3 months.

So you kind of have to push it out for longer. I'm using it now and have had the same reaction but worse and I'm sticking it out. Currently at the 1 week mark. After seeing all the rave reviews about The Ordinary products you've reviewed, I decided to try it out... Worst mistake ever!! As I said, I've always had clear skin -I get the odd spot every now and again, but that's only if I don't drink enough water or eat crap. The Ordinary broke me out so bad! I kept it going for a month and I'd wake up to a new spot every morning. Spots would either be little white ones or red abscess looking things. Incredibly disappointed! I've gone back to using a normal a normal cleanser in the morning followed by Olay beautiful fluid, and DHC cleansing oil in the evening followed by Dr Organic Aloe Vera Gel.
I am also considering light therapy to treat the damage left behind!

I'm planning to give both products a try but I'm going to try them separately. I feel that it's the Vitamin C that caused purging, not the Niacinamide.

I feel so much better thanks to the people in the comments, I don’t feel so alone. I don’t normally suffer from acne. Sure I’d get rashes but, my face just had dark marks from the rashes. I was recommend by a friend who swore by this and said it cleared her acne and her dark spots so I tried it. The first four days I use the niacinamide and then then used the Lactic acid with it. And for a couple of days my face was clearing up and looking better than ever. I saw a couple spots here and there but I didn’t think much of it. Day 6 I saw my chin area was breaking out like crazy, It was itchy and when I applied the Lactic acid, it stung so I took that as a sign and stopped using it. I continued to use the niacinamide as usual and I still continued to break out heavy. Now it’s everywhere and I don’t know what to do. I’ve never had a breakout this crazy before and it looks so bad and irritated.

I had the same experience with both niacinamide and hyaluronic acid , it broke me out like craaaazy . I was used to having acne few pimples here and there , but dear god that was out of this world. I had huge painful cysts under the skin that would hurt even without touching them.

  • @MeNatalily

I too had these breakouts that were inflamed and under the skin rather than the whiteheads which appear, I think, because your skin is purging.. But the red, inflamed, long-lasting blemishes that I have since using Niacinamide, are a bad reaction to the product. I also felt that my pores were enlarged rather than smaller, so I guess for some people it just isn't working like it should.

  • @divyatejaswinivengada6368

I had the same experience but the fact that I used it along with retinol is the reason for the random breakouts and purging , I used them separately and it's all good now ! ,So if anyone facing any kind of purging ,just make sure the products u use in addition to niacinamide is not irritating your skin

    Hey y'all.
So i saw everyone in the comments saying that their skin looks awful and worse than before and some people stopped using it and their skin got better etc.
First, to see if you are not allergic to the product, patch test it on your face, on a little portion everyday(BUT DONT PUT IT ON A PIMPLE AS YOU MIGHT REALLY BE ALLERGIC TO IT). If your skin is very red, it itches so bad that you cant keep it on and you can see some white dots on the area you applied the product, take it off(if it is aha/bha or some glicolyc acid or some acid, it is normak for ur skin to itch and hurt a bit). But you may be not allergic as this may be just a reaction bc you haven't used the product before.
You cant use the nianciamide with aha/bha or vitamin c, it wont work and your skin might breakout.
So if you use it right and you still have pimples after using it 3-4 days, it is not a breakout, it is purging. Your skin is renewing its cells faster than it would without the skincare so as a result you are getting some pimples and your skin may look worse.
If you use just one the ordinary product and the rest are diferent products, it may not be the ordinary's fault. Some products and ingredients just dont go well together.
So i recommend this skincare(night routine for normal/normal to oily/oily face) from the ordinary:
    1. Apply their cleanser on your dry face and massage it, then rinse and dry.
2.Apply their glicolyc acid with a pad gentle all around the face, and leave it.
    3. Apply their salicylic acid mask and leave it on for 10 minutes(NO MORE THAN THAT!!) then rinse of and dry ur face(dont rub the towel on the face)
    4. Apply hylauronic acid and leave on for 1 minute before applying the next.
    5. Their moisturizer.
And you are done, ur skin will clear out in around 2 months but if it is like worse worse and you have cystic acnee everywhere, consult a dermatologist sis.

Niacinamides restrict oil production. That can cause severe dryness and attack your skin barrier (which can result in more acne). If you really do suffer from oily skin (that it’s like pretty bad) then it’s fine. If you don‘t then do not use niacinamides! If you see redness and small little dots on your face it could also be an allergic reaction. NEVER EVER forget to patch-test!!!

I never had any problems with my sides of my chin, I would always only get a hormonal pimple or so in the middle of my chin. After using the niacinamide, it's like my face erupted. I also have a bad tendency to pick at my skin and try and pop pimples which were VERY ineffective with these weird tiny whiteheads on the sides of my chin. I will definitely be stopping this product now...

Thank you for posting your experience! Tried two if there highly recommended products the niacinamide and their marula oil and I am starting to suspect one or both are the culprit. I was already breaking out on my chin and had a few spots in other areas but after adding them and changing up my skincare routine, I started to get small bumps along my jawline. Currently doing elimination and patch testing to see which products caused it but perhaps it was the ordinary 😞 which I will be bummed about after everyone raves about these two products. The niacinamide definitely stung when I put it on. Not sure if it is because my skin barrier is comprised but my skin was not happy for a few minutes before the feeling subsided.

Sadly, I thought TO reduce oil production on my t-zone was so perfect for my skin! However, after some time, there were two cystic acne at my jaw line. I thought it was due to my facial wash and moisturizer... So I continued using TO until today and I am having 1 angry cystic acne, few bumps on my face!! I am still not sure if TO is the main culprit of all these matters! I am going to stop for one month and see what's the changes

For anyone reading this I used ordinary hyaluronic acid for 3 months and thought I had amazing improvements to my skin. I would break out every now and then but I was before using the product so I didn't really think too hard about it. I finally got fed up of getting nasty spots on either side of my nose and sometimes above my eyebrows. I stopped using all products except ordinary cleansing face wash and Curel moisturiser milk. Clear skin all week. Fingers crossed.

Yep I have the same reaction. Mine is worst. My whole face was as red as a tomato and then it dries out my skin so much that there are a lot of dry patches around my mouth area and cheek and between brows. Also I feel itchy around the patches area. And it actually made me feel stingy when I wash my face with my normal facial foam which I had no trouble with before. I thought I was the only one to be suffering from this since at least 3 people I know have no problem with this product and they absolutely loved it. Also I’m also allergic to aloe vera(not very sure. Felt itchy sometimes after applying) and calendula(broke out bad). What a skin huh?🤦🏻‍♀️

I used The Ordinary niacinamide last year for the first time. I used until 2020 and helped my skin. Then COVID-19 hit and Amazon stopped shipping to my location. I found a seller finally and got the niacinamide serum 2 bottles and started applying from 13th August onward. As of today I have two painful bumps on the left and right on my jaw. I don't know what to do. I thought this product was my holy grail. I am very depressed now.
It really worked on my forehead, temples and above my cheeks. I am sure it is not niacinamide, it is something else on the product.

I have been using it for a couple of weeks. My skin was completely breakout free thanks to aztec clay and Acure face scrub but I had a bunch of old acne scars. So I got the Niacinimade and the AHA. Out of nowhere, I started getting whitehead pimples. It wasn't a bunch of small bumps like you would get if your skin was purging. It was one on my cheek, one on my temple, one between my eyebrows and 2 on my forehead. Hyaluronic Acid does the same thing to me. The only acid that I've tried that doesn't do it is glycolic. I'm going to keep trying the AHA since you do rinse that one off.
