The final two episodes of this show are some of the best television ever made. It just a shame that people today cannot get past the fact that one actor has some makeup on.
This show gets better as you go on & Sgt Major shut up has one mission & thats to get the concert party soldiers into the jungle fighting 😂it lasted for 8 seasons
Great show. :) Based on the writer Jimmy Perry's experiences in the Army in WWII. His experience in local defense in WWII became "Dad's Army" - cannot recommend it too highly.
This show wasn’t racist, it made fun of everyone, upper class, posh, working class, the intelligent, the stupid, the good looking one, the fat short one, the camp one everyone got a ribbing, great fun.
I remember the song 'Whispering Grass' by Windsor Davies (Sergeant Major) and Don Estelle (Gunner "Lofty" Sugden ) it reached number one on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in 1975.
Deolali was a British Army camp 100 miles north-east of Mumbai (then called Bombay). It was the original location of the Army Staff College (later the Defence Services Staff College of India and the Pakistan Command and Staff College). It is also the source of the British slang noun doolally tap, loosely meaning "camp fever", and referring to the apparent madness of men waiting for ships back to Britain after finishing their tour of duty. By the 1940s this had been widely shortened to just "doolally", an adjective meaning "mad (insane)" or "eccentric".
Take a Holiday Take A Husband - is hilarious, It's the one way they go on holdiay and stay in a hotel and he trashes it! I think it's the best Some Mother's Do Ave Em' ... trouble is because it's bbc it fiercely copyright protected and rare to fiind o n UA-cam
You should watch them till the end, the Indian that sucks up all the time does abit to the camera about the episode. I can't remember if it's in every series/season from the beginning,, but it's an extra bit of funny. And if I remember correctly the person who plays him does have strong ties to India, he moved over to England to study and he stayed. Many today would say it is racist of sorts. But if you think about it, would you ask an elder Indian gentleman to do the sucking up and such? Also you'd have to find one that is interested in acting. Think about it. I have seen two Indian couples react this programme before and they loved it, one couple living in England that moved here and the other living in India. The one's living in India gave me some insight into many Indians of a certain age of the time preferred the British because of previous rulers and the human rights laws and such that the British brought with them (way before the war if I remember correctly). Certain Indians of a certain persuasion didn't like the law's because of certain beliefs.

Michael Bates was born in India and spoke fluent Urdu.

The ending is quite moving when Sgt Williams doesn’t know where to go.
