Good idea with the cushion/rope. I've become much more cautious as I got older and generally wait until there's about a foot of ice before I venture out. Still doesn't guarantee anything though.
Just FYI everyone, you do NOT need to replace Mono or flora line every year. Their is a way to test the line strength by stretch to breaking point by pounds(how the line is tested by at the factory) and most companies lines will last easily 2-5 years of every weekend use. All you have to do is break off 5-7 ft of line a year and retie (90% of all stress on the line and abrasion happens in the last 7 ft or less). So don't replace the line for ice fishing every year, its a total waste of line and money. 29" eyes on 4# flor that was 3 years old proves it.
