I live in Australia but last year i travelled to Edinburgh for a holiday and it was absolutely magical there. By far my favourite place I've travelled to. So seeing waterstones there on the main street was surreal for me

Fellow Edinburgh local here - really loved this video! Only great shop you missed was Armchair Books, its another second hand store but has fab selection of SFF and is v aesthetically pleasing.

Where I’m from - edinburgh - home to so many amazing writers! (The real winner is the george street waterstones that is no more :’( - was in such a great proximity to book festival back in the day)

This video is the G.O.A.T. It was so much fun! Can't wait for more episodes 😃 Edinburgh Books is my favourite I think because I love old books and the chaos, because I love 'hunting' and putting the effort into searching for a book, like wading through a treasure trove. Love the rating for the bookshops, especially -100 😂

My first visit to Toppings was in St Andrews. I loved it because, not only did they let me take the dogs in, they actively encouraged it. I bought my signed copy of Babel there, amongst others.

"Someone will find it funny." I found it funny! Giggled through a lot of this video, love the premise, execution, and vicarious bookshop visits! But also, it makes me miss Edinburgh. Haven't been in a long time. I need to manufacturer a trip across the pond to visit the rellies (and the books).

I haven’t been to Scotland (yet), but I would love to travel there. I’m from Texas, and I went to London for the first time a few years ago. I was absolutely blown away by the bookshops. I realized that Texas, at least, does NOT do bookstores properly. The bookstores in London were all so much bigger (and they’re all multi-storied). They have so much more variety and so many more options and each store was so different….I developed a slight obsessed on with going back. Lol. I haven’t managed it yet, but I would love to see so much more, including Ireland and Scotland. We came back home (I went with my fiancé) and it took us a LONG time to stop comparing our bookstores to the shops we found over there. I love this idea! Vicarious bookshop hunting is amazing.

Bookpeople in Austin isn't bad, and it's miles ahead of B&N (which is pretty dreadful everywhere). If you're ever in Houston, stop by Kaboom Books, Houston's most eponymous used bookstore (and the largest in Houston, BTW, at 140k volumes).

Blackwell’s is my favorite because they often have cheaper prices than Amazon and they ship free to North America.
    Great tour. More, please!

It depends on which Waterstones you visit. The Piccadilly Waterstones has an independent publishers section and a fairly wide selection of small press items, and at least all Ws in London have elevators. And I miss the Blackwells that was across from Foyle's in London - I picked up a shelfful of signed Margaret Atwood's there many years ago. I haven't been to Edinburgh in decades, though.

Thank you!! Flying to Scotland on Monday, so this was perfect timing ❤ one week in the Highlands, and then 4 days in Edinburgh. Looking forward to visit Waterstones again, love that place. Had totally missed it has a café though, 😅 is that new? 😮( It's at least 5 years since I visited Edinburgh) Toppings would be fun to visit too, for those sliding stairs only 😊 but I think i would be a bit overwhelmed by the maze... you should come to Stockholm and rate our Scifi/Fantasy bookstore in the Old Town. Gorgeous place!!

Here in America we only have Barnes and Nobles, and some resale stores like Half Price Books. New Barnes is exactly like Waterstones, except in a drab strip mall.
That Toppings store you went to is a liar. That Cloud Atlas copy was not a signed first edition, it is a later reprinting modern copy with sprayed edges. Original first edition is almost 20 years old, has an advertising ribbon, and worth close to $1000 signed. They are being disingenous by adverstising first edition later printings as “first editions.” As a first edition collector, First Edition usually means first state, first printing as well. I would leave that store and never come back; they can bug off. I am pissed off at them from 6000 miles away.
