I'm Scots and found this really interesting on how different things are. Mind you, trainspotting and Rab C Nesbitt, maybe not the best advert for Scotland lol.
That would be the Council tax, which includes water rates for running water, sewage, etc., which every household has to pay whether rented or owned. For this the Local Council will provide street lighting, road maintainance, refuse and recycling collection and free bins/food pails, environmental health, fire and police, schools, libraries, air/sea/mountain rescue, payments to some charities and local organisations that provide a service considered essential or important for the community such as day centres for disabled adults, community activities for able and disabled children, social work services, buses, and so on. We are more used to the rain I suppose; if you don't go out in the rain you'd be housebound! I have never owned a brolly and when I cycle I take waterproofs if I'm going more than local.
Of course! But in Canada we just pay the same tax differently. I will always remember the shock of learning about it for the first time. I still get an annual shock when I receive my council tax forecast. So some things never change I guess 😅

My husband and I traveled there in July of 2011 after getting aquatinted with a couple via Facebook (very long story). They had a flat in Edinburgh and a home in a small town on the northern edge of Scotland, along the North Sea (Portgordon). This couple showed us around both places and in between, showing us places we would never have seen/experienced on our own. We were able to get a glimpse of what life was like for a Scotsman. We also met their friends and family and have continued our friendship. (They even came over here and stayed with us a few years later). The area our friends were from, spoke Doric which was a struggle to understand at times but for us they would refrain. The first part of your video brought that all back to me and gave me a good belly laugh! Thanks for your video! I can honestly say that was THE best vacation I’ve ever had! The people were so friendly and I hope we can return one day soon!
What a great story!! So glad I could be a small part of reliving such a happy memory. It truly is a magical place. Hoping to get there very soon myself … thanks so much for watching and leaving a great comment. Really made my day 🥰🌹🙏🏴🇨🇦🏴
Cooo, it doesn’t sound like you love Scotland much… a few wee comment from someone who is a scot and lives in Scotland. It does not rain everyday. “All” food is not deep fried, only stuff you buy in a fish and chip shop, because deep fryers is all they have. The “extra tax because you rent” is the tax everybody pays for their public services like garbage collection, road maintenance etc etc. even home owners pay it. The tax is billed to every inhabited property. Dunblane may indeed have been the “last” school shooting here, but it was also the first and only school shooting here… a small point maybe, but an important one. Oh,and dunblane isn’t just outside Edinburgh…. Thank you so much for brightening up my day while i am so sick you made me laugh out loud. Love the way you put this video together and was that prince charles giving the weather forcast? When you said traffic cameras i just kept laughing and thinking about your parking ticket story. You rock that hat at the end!

Trainspotting & Shallow Grave.. I watched both a few times! My husbands brother lived their with his partner for years and they loved it! It looks amazing! My maiden name is Hawthorn so there is some Scottish there somewhere I believe! The information and facts you share are amazing! Loved this too!
Thanks so much, Michelle. Definitely Scottish blood in you!! I’ve downed tools for a while on UA-cam - too much going on - so I am WAY behind in viewing!! I will be back soon though.
Great video, yes bagpipes, tourists want to see that and it’s provided in abundance in Edinburgh, my wife worked there at one point and hated them because it was all the bloody time 🤣. Deep fried food is definately a thing but we also have food from everywhere, resturaunts and cafe’s that serve up stuff from all around the globe and the standard is very good to excellent, maybe this was worth mentioning in your video, glad you love our country 🏴❤️
Yes I LOVE Scotland more and more. I did the NC500 last August (video on my channel). I absolutely agree the food is great in Scotland. But - this video was meant to be my first impressions when I moved there. It was all so new to me. I’m back in Edinburgh in 3 weeks - can hardly wait. Thanks for your kind words 🙏 🥰 🏴
@@RenLuuk no worries, i’ve done all of the NC500, not all at once though…before it was given that label, it’s a great trip, have you driven the Bealach na ba ? ( pass of the cattle) up through the Torridon mountains, what a spectacular if a bit scary road that is, and at the other end is The Applecross Inn, there’s some stunning food in there, top class
Edinburgh remains one of my favourite places. You will not be disappointed. And I bet you will feel connected to the city because of your father 🏴🥰
@4:10: It's "Princes Street", not "Princess Street". As a Canadian (I think you mentioned Ottawa somewhere) you should be used to hidden taxes as sales tax is not added to purchases until you get to the checkout... at least that's how they do it in Quebec. I was surprised to find the prices marked on groceries did not correspond with what you paid for them! While, in North American terms, Dunblane may seem like it's "just outside Edinburgh" it actually isn't. It's closest to Stirling and a good 50 minute drive from Edinburgh.
Hey 👋 I do say “Princes” but my accent makes it sound like Princess for sure! And yes, absolutely hate that sales tax thing. I was referring to council tax which (surprisingly) Canada doesn’t have. Who knew Canadians haven’t added on yet another layer of taxation 🙄 and, of course, Dunblane is a bit of a way outside Edinburgh. But we Canadians are so used to driving, a mere 50 minutes is around the corner to us 😂 I’m actually due to get to Scotland in a couple of weeks. Can hardly wait!
@@RenLuuk Council Tax is essentially Property Tax - don't you have that in Canada? The main difference is that Property Tax is paid by the property owner (and recovered through a higher rental charge) whereas Council Tax is paid directly by the occupant. Yes, I get the distance thing. My wife is Canadian and to her distance is measured in hours (or even days!)...
@@douglasherron7534 There is no council tax (or property tax) for renters. Only owners. As I said, I'm surprised Canada hasn't followed the UK lead. They sure did with their GST .... And yes - definitely a Canadian thing to describe in hours rather than distance. I still do that to date!!!
Loved this. Insightful and funny, and brilliantly put together as always. Am with you on the bagpipes. I can’t get on with the sound. Have been a few times but would love to spend more time there exploring and walking the mountains. Need to go to Edinburgh too.
Hey Chris!!!! 👋 I can take bagpipes in small doses .. and after this editing I am good for about a year 😂 I do feel I should do one about the Highlands as well … 🤔 hope you guys are doing well 🥰🌹🙏🏴
The extra tax is no fun. Love some Braveheart Four seasons in one hour wow! So many bagpipes lol 😆. The food looks good. What a fantastic experience Karen 😀
Isn't Wales the only place wetter than Scotland? I remember the year we had rain everyday for over 6 months, there was one place in Wales that had it a day longer! Possibly apocryphal... From grey, wet & sorta mostly kinda locked down Kinsale! ☘️☮️🤘🏽🤠👍🏽☮️☘️
As much rain as we get here in South Wales, it is nothing compared to Scotland. And Glasgow is worse than Edinburgh. I think that is why I never complain about the rain here 🌧 speaking of which … pouring outside at the moment 😂🙏🌹🏴
Kinsale is lovely. My in-laws had a restaurant there for a while. I'd have thought Ireland was wetter than Scotland? Anyway, west coast Scotland a lot more rain sodden than the east coast.
I had a notification that someone asked what restaurant - but the comment isn't showing up on this page? In case it's still being asked. My late brother in law had it....I always forget the name as it's the year of a famous Kinsale event. Ring any bells?
Such a great video! LOL 'still impossible to subtitle'😂 Four seasons in one hour - I feel like we have that here in Ohio! Thank goodness for air con!! Have a great weekend x 🥰🙏🏴🇨🇦
Another meticulously edited vid...don't know why you not getting tons more views. I live a few yards from Scotland. Had I known then what I know now I'd have edged myself over in to Scotland as I'd be so much richer if I did. I'm half Celt, I have (dyed) red hair and a first name that is used a lot in Scotland - I just get on great with the Scottish people. If you're genuine they're fine. I came up from the south and I immediately felt at home and so appreciative of the advantages here. East coast Scotland has a lot less rain than the west coast. ;) East Lothian also has more sunny days than the rest of Scotland. Bagpipes...I know. Difficult. Edinburgh has been home to some world class jazz musicians. I've had some jams with them. Such a joy. Like you I was confused with the tattoo stuff. I saw they had a 'Tattoo Centre' proclaimed in the city maps...I was confused. I didn't know you're a lawyer. Scottish law and English law entirely different of course. My ex was teaching law at Edinburgh Uni for a while, their law faculty was amazing at the time.

@@RenLuuk Wow! Well remembered! It can be pretty crazy travelling by train from London through into Scotland. As the train moves northward through England the atmosphere relaxes on the train, new passengers are more chilled, station staff are friendlier. By the time you get to Scotland it's mega easy-going. As it gets further north I'm afraid I often need a translator...which is my fault as I'm the foreigner. The broad skies, nature, stillness...what more could anyone want? I'm "home". X

Yes, Trainspotting! Definitely have Scotland on the to go list. Very beautiful country and interesting cuisine. I'm curious about the Haggis and all the deep fried stuff. Especially the Pizza for some reason. This is a really good look at the things that we would be shocked about if we didn't see them in this video. Awesome video Karen!
Hello Karen this was was wonderful I really love listening to your videos i feel like it is a documentary. Love documentary's . You find the est clips to add to your content. I too am not a hat person either. 💕NonnaGrace I too would have said "What Is He Saying"
but that was for free water tapped into your home, street lighting all the hours of darkeness, refuse collection, from your door, and many other community based resources people need, not corporations, and car owners, people, that walk and breath.
Absolutely. We pay council tax in Canada as well - but it’s part of the rent if you’re a tenant. Was just a surprise! Well used to it now though, having paid it for the last 25+ years 🤪
Deep fried everything? Seriously? Most households will not even have a deep fryer, so you must be talking about the great Take Away, the "Fish and Chip Shop". They do deep fry everything. Actually, most of it is great. I try to do a "Chippie" at least a couple of times a year. Definitely not day to day home cooking though - you should know that. As for deep fried Mars bars etc, a Chippie somewhere did that as a gimmick. Never tried it (I like my rare Mars bar as it comes), never will, but news coverage at the time hyped this up, Now every Chippie in a "tourist" area does these. And, looking at visitors reactions on You Tube, these are great apparently. Just saying, most Scots have never tried them, but glad they are a thing for visitors to enjoy, and you pay 3 times the normal price for a Mars Bar as well.
Morning! Yes, I was talking about chippies for sure. Remember - this was my experience being a first timer in Edinburgh. So I was definitely a tourist. When I go back there it still feels like home to me. My work sends me to Scotland whenever possible so I am lucky that way 🍀 have a lovely holiday 🙏🥰🏴

Awww thank you so much ☺️ I have to be honest and say it is a hard one. I think there are more jobs in Scotland. It has the oil business (I worked at an oil company myself when I moved to Edinburgh). But housing is pricier in the built up areas. It is isolated as it takes a while to travel by car anywhere south. But - if you are going to Spain or something by plane there is excellent service. Wales has a depressed economy unfortunately. But in South Wales and north wales we have beautiful coastlines. Maybe not as magnificent as the NC500 😂 but pretty great. Weather wise - I think it is a bit worse in Scotland. And the midges are so incredibly annoying. We don’t have midges in Wales. Hope that helps a bit. I honestly find it very hard to leave Scotland every time I go there. I am definitely in love with the place. For me it’s the location, being so isolated. I love to travel … saying that - I’ve bought a van! It’s in the garage getting a new engine 😕 but once it is up and running, I’m going to be doing a lot of travelling along the Welsh coastline. And beyond. Good luck 🤞 🏴 🏴 🚗 💨

Dunblane is a complex story. Some interesting videos on youtube about it. With small communities the scars are even more intense. This was unimaginable to all of us in the UK. One of those turning points.
@@RenLuuk I had missed your initial response and I see I repeated your remark about the good documentaries. Great minds think alike? When driving around and seeing road signs for Dunblane or Lockerbie it's very sobering and time for pause and respect. X
In reality the majority of this is nonsense. The bagpipes are not heard nearly as much as this, the deep fried mars bar does exist but is more of an urban myth in that I have yet to know anyone who has eaten one. As for Haggis, other than Burns night it is rarely eaten and Rab C Nesbitt does not represent the cultural majority. Edinburgh is full of non Scots who project this lazy uneducated view. You are clearly not getting out enough, try visiting a restaurant rather than the local chippie. Also to date we have 21 female Advocates in Scotland. To me, this did not come across as having any fondness for Scotland, more a sneering condescension. On the other hand I am a Scottish redhead and we tend to be hard to impress. At the end of the day Edinburgh is what non Scots project Scotland to be.
Thanks for your glowing review 😂 All of it was true. Including the bagpipes. And remember I moved there in 1996. But I’ve been living in the UK for 25 years now. My job has taken me back to Scotland many many times - Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow, Edinburgh and many areas in between. So whilst I am not Scottish, clearly, I do have 25 years of continual experience of visiting it several times a year. I am not a “chippy” person - never have been. But I have been to many restaurants in Scotland - and haggis is often a menu choice. I am quite well travelled around the world. And, respectfully, I don’t go to Scotland for the food. It has improved over the years … but still a way to go. Sorry - truth hurts sometimes 😂 Rab C Nesbitt was on tv from 1989-1999 and again from 2010 to 2012. That looks like a pretty good run to me. Again, I moved there in 1996. I don’t know if you were around in those times. But I can tell you, he was extremely popular in the 90’s. That is why someone suggested I watch him. With regards to your comment on having 21 female advocates - are you aware there are approximately 460 advocates in Scotland? So 21 females is not a number to be proud of. And to date, 4 of 112 senior judges are female. Scotland remains woefully behind the times on that front. But hey ho - video was supposed to be a bit of fun. I do take issue with it being lazy, though. Have you ever made a UA-cam video like this? Hope you have a lovely holiday 🥰🙏👍🏴
I am afraid i can’t find decent foods to eat in Scotland. I don’t eat animal organs, any deep friend foods, potatoes, breads and so forth. Well, I am okay to eat cabbage soup everyday.
Of course you do!! It was truly a big change for me, though, when I first arrived. Remember I live in Wales where congealed seaweed is still a pretty popular staple!! I've never gotten used to that one.

Thank you so much for brightening up my day while i am so sick you made me laugh out loud. Love the way you put this video together and was that prince charles giving the weather forcast? When you said traffic cameras i just kept laughing and thinking about your parking ticket story. You rock that hat at the end!
Awww Violet!! You are sick??!! 🥺 Yes, that was Prince Charles doing the weather forecast 😂 and yes, my ticket. Our little secret 🤫 😂. Hope you feel better soon 🥰🙏🌹☀️
Thanks for sharing this information with us big like 22
I'm a Scot and lived in Edinburgh for over 23 years. Most of this is true and funny.
Thanks so much! Been accused a bit of stereotyping - but it was all true. Honest. Really appreciate you watching 🙏 🏴🥰
A wonderful film! Top notch quality! Peace! (in spite of the bloody pipes)!
Thanks so much!!! And yes, peace ☮️. No bagpipes here in South Wales 🏴🥰🙏🏴
@@RenLuuk You are welcome! Oops! Lol! Well then I will visit your channel again and learn all about Wales a la Karen Luuk. Lol!
Yes!! I have a couple of vids about that. That is the beauty of a channel with no niche. I just do what I want 😂
wow! thank you! You really educated me on Scotland, I had no idea about any of it.
@@RenLuuk Take care Karen - love your content.. you have so much to share XX
Great job! My Dad was from Edinburgh and I have never been - but it's on the list!
Edinburgh remains one of my favourite places. You will not be disappointed. And I bet you will feel connected to the city because of your father 🏴🥰
@@RenLuuk I think it's bumped up!!! Highlands and Edinburgh...
Do you have any shocks about Scotland that you’ve discovered?? 🏴🥰✈️
Loved this. Insightful and funny, and brilliantly put together as always. Am with you on the bagpipes. I can’t get on with the sound. Have been a few times but would love to spend more time there exploring and walking the mountains. Need to go to Edinburgh too.
Hey Chris!!!! 👋 I can take bagpipes in small doses .. and after this editing I am good for about a year 😂 I do feel I should do one about the Highlands as well … 🤔 hope you guys are doing well 🥰🌹🙏🏴
I meant to ask - the tax: is that like council tax or something different?
Council tax - not exclusively Scottish, but was a real shocker for me. As was the television licence 😂
The extra tax is no fun. Love some Braveheart Four seasons in one hour wow! So many bagpipes lol 😆. The food looks good. What a fantastic experience Karen 😀
Is there such a thing as “fun” tax?? Maybe the tax you pay on amusement park tickets 😂 thanks so much for watching 🥰🏴🙏🌹

I just love learning more about your past. But where are your old school photos 😀 The weather there sounds like FL. Did you ever learn how to play the bag pipes. Crazy they give a breathalyzer at all stops. Crazy how different it is in other places. So sad about the gunman, so nuts that so many kids were killed. Your storytelling is my favorite, it holds my attention the entire time.

I'm "home". X

but that was for free water tapped into your home, street lighting all the hours of darkeness, refuse collection, from your door, and many other community based resources people need, not corporations, and car owners, people, that walk and breath.
Absolutely. We pay council tax in Canada as well - but it’s part of the rent if you’re a tenant. Was just a surprise! Well used to it now though, having paid it for the last 25+ years 🤪
Re Council Tax, some landlords include this in the rent bill.
So true!!! 🏴 💰🥰

Council tax
You are so right! We just don’t have tax added on for renters as an additional cost. But definitely know about it now!! 🏴 💰
Sorry - truth hurts sometimes 😂
Rab C Nesbitt was on tv from 1989-1999 and again from 2010 to 2012.
