We got some chickens this year. They were older and started laying right away. Our biggest problem was that once we collected the eggs, the hen would find a new place to nest. Fortunately our neighbor who had chickens also moved and gave us his coop. We only had to move it to our yard. That accomplished, we hearded the chickens in the coop. Now we are waiting on them to start laying again. It’s been two weeks, nothing. I found some golf balls and dropped one in four nests. We only have 9 hens with 6 nests. With winter coming on, I expect to be adding a light since hens need more light than the six hours we will get in winter.
My brood will be coming out of their brooder and into the coop I've just finished building tomorrow or the next day. Someone told me that I shouldn't introduce egg boxes until the first egg is laid in order to prevent them sleep in the boxes and getting used to that, as opposed to their roosts. Do you have any opinion about that? I was thinking of putting the boxes in, but blocking there entrance, but not sure if that's a wrong move and waste of time... Still trying to get this all figured out. Thank you for any input.
@@daniellesjoy yeah. They get on the roost and lay eggs. We have a long piece of sassafras wood which we ues a perch, deters insect, it's above and slightly away from the boxes. Every morning for the last week I find egg splattering on the floor.
@@BeastJerky they finally started using boxes. Get fake eggs, I got ceramic. And you just gotta push through until they see it's safe to lay. They need to realize perch is for sleeping and nest is for eggs
Oh my goodness I had this happen today. I am like what in the world. Hopefully whichever hen did it will notice the other one laying in the boxes. I think for now I will stop collecting the egg from the nesting box so quickly so the other hens can see it! Fingers crossed they figure it out quickly!
We are new to chickens & 1 of our hens just started laying..she sits in the box for a good amount of time, then comes out & lays on the ground like shes pooping...3 eggs so far..hopefully shes just confused right now..
@@daniellesjoy we have the wooden eggs in the boxes..she knows to go in the boxes just doesn't drop on the box as soon as she gets out..lol.. next time she goes in I will leave the coop door closed, maybe that will help..
We got our first 4 chicks in March we have one laying still waiting on the other 3, but no matter what i do the little shit keeps laying in the corner of the coop.😂
Coming into warm weather again, love your chicken and rabbit videos! 💜
Thank you so much :)

Excellent tips
Thanks!
Thank you
You're welcome
Nice!
Thanks!
I will like if this works. Will be trying tomorrow.
Best of luck!
It worked! I also think the main reason was we didn’t think the dividers in the nesting box were important

That is a good idea! I think that works :)
My chickens are just laying as they roost. I got fake eggs so hopefully that helps but I'd gladly take any advice.
They are laying and roosting at the same time?

@@ironicugandan5826 I have the same issue. How did you get them to use the nesting boxes?

Oh no, we have some that lay on the floor you can try to put wooden eggs in the box to train her!
