- This is how to fix a Rinnai Water Heater that is not working following a flush of the heat exchanger. The in-use light was not on so the unit didn't know it needed to heat water.

I decided to clean my hot water heater late in the evenin and this exact issue happened. You just saved my life. I've ten kids and I think they would have lynched me in the morning if we didn't have any hot water.
We have very hard water here in Clermont county, Ohio. I have to clean my hot water heater every six months.

The hard reset (unplug/wait 15 seconds/plug-in) did the trick for me. When you hear the humming and you can see the blue flame through the little window you know it's good to go. Thanks for the video!
Thanks Nick. Had the same thing happen to me today. After flush, no ignition whatever and no discussion a nowhere about how to correct it and nearly spent all day on diagnosis. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar for posting this video. You just saved me a service call. I did have to remove the coupling and blow some compressed air in to start the turbine. All of this was triggered by the city replacing our water meter with a smart water meter so we lost pressure for about 10 minutes. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Great video - it saved our day! We went away for Christmas (9) days. When we got home and were really ready for showers - the Rennie did not work. It had been flushed weeks ago and has worked fine since. I pulled out the little pinwheel - but it seemed to be working fine. I blew it out anyway, put everything back and wallah, it started working fine. And oh yes this was on a Saturday, so you know the plumber call out would have been expensive. Going to try this. I also have no error code and no 'in use' indicator light. Flushed it earlier this evening, no luck. I just had that union apart and tried blowing compressed air through to pinwheel based on a suggestion in another video... that didn't work either. I didn't realize that the pinwheel/spinner came out, so gonna try that! Will update! Thanks for the suggestion!

As a HVAC/R Mechanic I have descaled a lot of tankless water heaters over the years. The advice that you received to not descale yearly and to wait for an error code is simply not true. After watching this video I actually called Rinnai tech support to see if their procedures had changed and they said absolutely not. Not following the annual recommend maintenance procedures may not only harm the unit but may also void your warranty.

Wasnt cleanin hot water heater but kept gettin code 63, bad flow. After drainin it and tryin to get some of the crud out after pluggin back in didnt get in use light either and still code 63. Did this, blew it out with a can of air. Got it working for now will see how long it lasts.
22 year old Rinnai unit so will prob need to replace soon but gave me hot water till the plumber can come out. Thanks for showin this.

You can also, remove filter and attach water hose to hot side serving valve, close cold side serving valve. Turn water on garden hose. (Basically you are back flushing which will usually free that impeller.) Sometimes a small particular gets lodged from the flushing. If the back flush doesn't work then use a small wire going up thru the filter (removed) and giggle wire will free with out taking valve out.. GLTA
I lost hot water and pressure on Christmas. The next day I flushed the system with vinegar. Still no hot water until I read this post about the back flush. I guess the pin wheel was stuck. The pressure and hot water is back. It took 5 minutes and probably saved me hundreds. Thanks so much for your info!
Just want to make sure I understand your instructions. I should shut off the hot water, hook a hose to the service valve on the hot side, shut off the supply line (cold side) valve on the unit and open up the cold side service valve so the water will flow through from hot side through cold side? I just don't want to damage the pinwheel. If that doesn't work, I should push the wire up through where the pinwheel is located? Appreciate any adivice.
@@moodondie Yes, that's the way I read it and make sense of it. Reverse flush for a stuck pinwheel.

That's called a turbine , if it does not turn the unit won't recognise that there is water flowing. also the system wont show an error code when this occur . Also good to check the 80 micron filter just at the water inlet which can get blocked , ( situated behind the Black plastic plug at the water inlet ) LC only comes up if the water quality is an issue , as lime, calcification in the heat exchanger will reduce water flow and raise the temperature in the heat exchanger due to reduced heat transfer to the water . P/S . need to be careful using a wire to loosen the turbine as they are easily damaged , better to do a back flow , by removing the filter , disconnect the hot water outlet , and connect a water hose to it and flush it back .
Could you take a picture of the pinwheel? I took mine and only found a small plastic piece?
So I have probably an older version but after removing the outer attachment I can’t seem to pull out the pinwheel. I tried with fingers and needle nose but it at least doesn’t come out easily and I’m a bit nervous to pull too hard. I have of course the sporadic problem where it usually works but then occasionally won’t trigger it on. This sounds promising and I’m blowing air up there and cleaning of what I can’t seem to reach. But seems like it would be nice to remove it and inspect and do a really good descaling. Any tips appreciated.
Did you clean the filter. Our water leaves very little in the way of deposits so I find once a year for about an hour and clean the filter. Flush the vinegar and your off to the races

I have a problem on my rinnai condensing water heater. I flushed it today and after doing it, even when heater is not running, there is a steady flow of water from condensing pipe. What to do to fix it. Thanks!
Do you have to drain the unit before unscrewing the union? Or can I just close the valve for cold water?
You have to do maintenance on the unit early if your water is hard.
Harder water will necessitate more frequent cleaning as you said. The timelines mentioned in the video were provided by a Rinnai rep so I always recommend checking with your local contact who would be more familiar with your water source.
My plumbing is all copper plumbing and is not flexible. I can't disassemble the part that you are talking about, and am not able to get to the pinwheel. I noticed that the residue that came out of the pre-filter was kind of sticky and gummy after running vinegar through it, so I would guess the same thing is happening in the pinwheel. since I cannot get to the pinwheel, I'm wondering about running warm soapy water through the unit to see if that might allow the pinwheel to spin freely? Any thoughts on that? Also maybe putting my air compressor line into the hot water drain hole might help, but I'm worried about too much air pressure causing things to break inside. Ideas would be appreciated please thank you!
I would tend to stay away from compressed air but maybe if you could try to back flush part of the system to remove anything that’s clogged or disassemble at a different location and work from there if possible. I might normally recommend a stronger cleaner to dissolve any other residue but Rinnai cautions against using strong cleaners since they can wear away at the internal heating elements.
So I have the same Rinnai water heater, had it for 3 years now. I decided to flush it for the first time today using vinegar. After running the vinegar through it for about an hour and cleaning the pre-filter, I flushed the vinegar out with clean water for about 5 minutes. I came in and tested the unit and it worked fine. Later the same evening I took a shower and it would run hot water for about 15 minutes and then turn cold in the middle of the shower. After about 2 minutes of cold water it would go back to hot. I extended the shower to see if it would happen again and it did, for several minutes, it turned cold. I ran the shower until it turned back hot then I got out. Ive done some research and can find nothing. I am curious if my pin wheel is getting stuck.

When you flush always remover the vent and clean, and clean out the fan and pre filter
Mine was doing the exact same thing. It did beep and display a code 10 this last time, but it wouldn't at other times. I watched another video on code 10 issues and removed and cleaned out the internal fan blower. It's working great now. Keeping fingers crossed that'll be all it needed. May consider looking up that code 10 video. I believe it was done by a gentleman named Parker. Hope it helps. Those hot, then cold showers are rough, particularly when you still have soap suds all over!
Well if it wasn’t for this video I’d be up a creek without a paddle. I had the same issue,but different brand of water heater . I did like you said , took me maybe all of 5 minutes. Put it all back together and what do you know I have hot water.
We did 2 flushes first with vinegar, but once we reset the code inside the box . 2 little black buttons we pressed simultaneously for 10 seconds it was fine for 8 hrs then back to beeping with LCO code and no hot water . We did a second time with the haymaker cleaning solution , and reset the code, flushed the system out and checked the pin wheel . Woke up and cold water , and beeping with LCO . I don’t know what else to do.
how do you remove the coupling under the pin wheel?
That's in the service manual. It's the filter

Sounds like a lot of maintenance. Flushing, descaling, flow sensor cleaning, pull this off, change this out..... I'll stick with my traditional tank water heater thanks. I turn on the tap, I get hot water. Simple.
