I called Mike about a problem with hot water turning cold, he told me to check the water flow servo valve. Watched his video on it and it did the trick. Thanks Mike.
Hi MIke, I have an R75ls that stopped working. No error code. I watched this video and one of the others, and it seemed that there may be an issue with the flow turbine. The videos gave me the confidence to proceed with the repair. When I opened the unit, I traced the wires you identified to their respective connectors. I found that one of the 3-wire connectors was green and corroded. When I took the connector apart, there were only two pins visible instead of 3. Since the wires came from the flow turbinie, I assumed that the signal was not getting to the contol board. I cleaned the connector and soldered jumper wire to the wires that were missing the connector pin. That solvled the problem! Thanks for your videos. You are a great instructor! Larry.
You sir...I could just hug you! After a $200 service call and an $1100 quote just to change out the flow sensor I stumbled on this video...I replaced the flow sensor myself with no success (its probably still a good part)....but the paperclip in the flow turbine did the trick!!! I have an RUC98i unit that I was about to let get replaced and tried the paperclip suggestion and IT WORKED! I have been without hot water in the house for almost 2 weeks, so glad I can get back to normal! Thank you for all your videos!!!!
This video saved me ~1000$ today. I was able to remove both the inlet side of the fitting and the water flow sensor side of the fitting without disconnecting any wires, I was able to clean the flow turbine and reinstall the whole thing. Everything worked flawlessly afterwards. The hardest part was removing the wire spring clip that holds the turbine in the flow sensor body. In any case, thanks so much your video and explanation is truly appreciated.
I have a Rinnai tankless unit that is 5 years old. I am also on a well that has high mineral content. Not a good mixture. For two years it has become unreliable to deliver hot water. Last week had a tech flush the unit...or at least try to and now I have no hot water. The only advice I would have is change the little filter very often if on a well with hard water. For me, I have gong to abandon the unit and have a normal tank water heater installed. The Rinnai saves money to operate but not worth the trouble. Excellent video.
You will still have a problem with the sediment and minerals settling at the bottom of the tank. Here in Florida I put a pre filter on the incoming cold water and service them twice a year. Cost on fuel snd water savings will be great. Thanks for the comment Mike
Thank you for your time to educate people, could you please tell me on Rinnia REU-V2532FFU-US why after some time the right half of burner turn OFF and only the left half stay ON and some time I hear POP POP POP when the left half of the burner is ON. I would have been taking cold showers for two weeks tomorrow. I watched your video and when I saw the sensor I realized I had an identical one in my unit. I pulled it apart Monday night and cleaned the valve with some PB Blaster and blew compressed air through it (as was recommended in another video I watched). Reassembled and got nothing. I'm in the automotive industry and quickly realized the flow sensor is basically a hall effect sensor. Mine was not good looking and I had no codes and never had the in use light come on. Replaced it tonight and it cured all my issues.
Great video. I have a RL94 model. Flow turbine was stuck. First video I saw said use compressed air to try and dislodge what might be sticking the turbine....no luck with that one. Your video showed me how to get access to the turbine in the first place, but still no joy doing anything one the two screw flange assembly (the one with the little screened filter) was loosened and the piping pulled over to the side. It still was not over to the side enough to give me full access. HOWEVER, I watched another video that saw me home free. It mentioned removing the 2-screw flanged assembly (unthread it) from the isolation valve assembly below it and it would give enough of an air gap to get to the turbine with some needle nose pliers. This allowed me to not have to break into the bowels of the RL94 unit. Cleaned out the turbine quickly and got back up and running in no time. Of all the videos i watched on this topic, yours was by far the most informative. Thanks for spending the time.
I know your original comment is a year old but just in case...could you please post a link to the video you reference, the one that gave you enough room to access the turbine with needle nose pliers? I could follow your directions but I'd like to see it done, too. Thank you.

Thanks for all the great videos!! I have a Rinnai RUCS75C that I am have an issue with. Sometimes when I turn the hot water flow on full the unit will fire up full blast and then after a few seconds it will loose flame on the outside burner section. It clicks like one of the four burner relays is turning off. When this happens the water flow will slow down to try to compensate for the reduced flame. I have pulled the flow turbine and inspected as you show and it is free and spins easily. Kind of at a loss any suggestions??
I run a non-profit research center in Peru. I bought a Rinnia tankless unit in the USA and hooked it up here in Peru. I have been running great for a few years, now it has problems. I get an error code (65) that says the servo valve is bad. Water of any kind does not run through the unit. The servo pump was changed, cleaned the filter and tried to flush the unit out. The cleaning solution does not get past the filter (even when the filter is removed so I know the filter is not clogged). I am at my whits end. Not sure what do do next.

Hey Mike have you got a Rinnai flow simulator? It a small PCB that Plugs into the flow sensor harness and sends a simulated flow rate signal to the PCB. If the unit fires up then you know you have a Jamed turbine. Great diagnostic tool.
Hey Mike, is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of WHEN the unit turns on? In the AM, I think our neighborhood water pressure must be falling cause the hot water volume in the am seems low.
Mike - Thank you for the videos. I was able to troubleshoot, disassemble, clean, reassemble the flow turbine and reinstall. Fired it up and had hot water again. Had a bit of a surprise when it a leak appeared but luckily it was just a pinched O ring I didn't see on the hotwater out. Would a prefilter help keep the screen clean?
Hi mike Great Videos, I have a problem with my Rinnai in that it occasionally stops heating during a shower etc and just cold water comes out. If I shut it off and turn it back in it turns hot again. Any thoughts, I have flushed and cleaned the filter. Thanks
Great videos!!! A question for you, my heater works fine except for water at the kitchen sink. Showers and a utility sink work ok but not hot water to the kitchen sink which is the farthest outlet from the heater. I flushed the heater with vinegar but no change. I'm thinking there is debris on the flow sensor that only happens when there is lower flow to the sink but not the higher flow showers? I didn't clean the inlet filter because the installers placed the power conduit right in front of it. 😡
Great video! I’m having an issue with my RUC98iN where since flushing the unit my low flow vanity faucets won’t trigger the unit to fire. Everything else in the house will, if I remove the aerators from those faucets the heater will fire and work fine. Could this be the flow sensor? I tried flushing it again, cleaning out the screen filter on the inlet side. No luck.
Rinnai, I love the video. When i open the Emergency Hot Release value manually, the turbine spins and I get hot water but when I turn I unreleased it I don't get a water heater. I have cleaned the filter 2 times and it's clean. FYI. we have well water and after changing the water tank I started experiencing this issue. I am sure this has to do with the dirt and particle stuck. buy why I get hot water when I trigger the manual hot value release.
Check all the faucet airfares snd shower heads for debris. When you turned of then back on the water debris come in through the piping. It happens to us all the time Mike
System starts and runs then I believe it over heats the shuts down . Let sit for a bit then repeats but I do believe water is hotter than 120 degrees that I have it set for?
Hi Mike, thanks for the great details for the Rinnai's. I have reviewed your video on no flow, locked turbin, however, I have the other problem. We have the E110CN and, with no domestic water flow, the water heater plates are heated on low fire. Now, I see the turbine and the sensor, but, it doesn't seem logical that these would cause this phenomena. Any idea why this unit is behaving this way? It will even low fire and not allow the boiler heat to begin. Any thoughts?
Hey Mike, That Tankless Guy is really easy to remember for me ! Good Luck - you have been very helpful. I have an RUC98i that does not turn on at low flow, no hot water (bathroom low flow sink fixtures). Took off the sink low flow guts and turned on the faucet and heater water came through. Should I switch out the sink filter and get away from "low flow" entanglements? Appreciate you!
Control transformer ET-182 had 120 volt input, but no output. It converts usa 120 vac to Japan 100 vac. I purchased an external transformer from Amazon and powered the heater up with it. I was unable to buy the ET-182 part anywhere - discontinued by Rinnai. Suggest you do a video on that repair to help folks out with the same problem
Hi Mike having issue with my RU199R where there is no water coming out of hot side at all. I had unplugged it & shut the water main off to complete other lines, and drained it. then when I turned the water back on & plugged it in…there is no water coming out of the hot side at all. ?? There must be a valve that stopped the flow….how do I restart it??
Great video! Question: We have a RUC80 and are having an issue where the dedicated closed loop that goes to a forced air heating system fires the burner, but running the hot water from our taps does not. In order to get hot water, we have to turn our thermostat up a few degrees, wait for the burner to kick in, and we can get tap hot water. Then when you are finished your dishes/shower, you turn the thermostat down again. But you could run the tap all day and no hot water, no error code, nothing. How could this occur, is it the water flow turbine as well? Thanks.
If I even crack the cold open in the shower in a minute or so the hot shuts down. Could it be back pressure? And the unit sits of due to low volume threshold hit? Would valves replacement possibly help or fix it?
Hey Mike, your videos are great. I have an old C85i which seems discontinued. I'd ordered the generic Rinnai water flow turbine you'd linked, hoping to swap and see if it fixes my issues. I can tell the turbine is only spinning intermittently when I blow in it, which exactly matches my hot water delivery :). Is there any way I can still get a replacement for that wider turbine for the M8E-15 water flow control device? I can't find it anywhere on the internet. Thanks in advance, I'm certain if I could replace this ~$7 part my issues would be fixed...but if not have no idea how to swap the larger device and worry I'll have to upgrade the whole unit. Anyway I've cleaned it like a jeweler and put it back in the system...
Quick question I'm working maintenance at a hot springs resort And I have a rinnai tank less and when I turn hot water in tub to wide open flame cuts out any idea where to look?
Mike, I removed the water servo valve but the water flow turbine was stuck even with needle nose pliers, so I lubed with Pam, blew out with compressed air heard weeeeee then put back together; Do certain models retain the turbine? You indicated some did not come out and some do come out....???? Do I buy whole servo unit? When I pop sink faucet on/off quickly, the hot water flows within 3 minutes....If I just turn it on, nothing, no codes, no firing, no flames.... This is driving me crazy.
Yes that’s correct some do come out some don’t. It also could be a bag magnetic sensor that reads the turbine. You may have to replace the turbine. Mike
Can a stuck turbine keep the valve closed not allowing any water flow through the unit (V53DEP) or is it a motor issue on the valve? I'd like to try to just clean and reinstall....units only 2 years old?
Hey man, great video. I have a rl94 that’s about 8 years old and I have noticed with one or more fixtures on In the house the water psi goes down super low, to the point of just dribbling out. I did a full flush with vinegar and cleaned the filter in the front but still super low psi when more than one fixtures is on. I also did a test with opening the hot water service valve and the water starts out with good psi then goes lower and lower. Any ideas?
my v75i e is throwing a 65 code. I cleaned the filter as well. The weird thing is if i hold the T&P valve open the heater fires up without coding. I then open up all the faucets in the house and close the T&P the water heater continues to run. Once i shut off all the fixtures then turn one faucet on it will throw code 65 again. I have 50 psi going into & out of the Rinnai. Its acting like it wants to run only on less psi since it runs fine with either the T&P wide open or all the fixtures running.
The T&P is rite off the tankless snd makes the unit fire at high fire. One question if you turn all the hot water faucets on in your house does it give the code. Sorry second question lol how old is the unit snd have you serviced it every year. It really sounds like you have a stuck or bad water servo valve. If the unit is under 5 years old the part is under warranty. I hope this helped Mike
@@ThatTanklessGuy Thank you for the quick response. The unit is brand new. The only way we can keep the water heater from throwing a code is first open the T&P then we can open all the faucets. If we try to open the faucets first the water heater will code. Its almost like it doesn't want to fire correctly with full water pressure which is 50psi. Its weird that it will fire with the T&P wide open creating a pressure drop
I have a RUS65e. It stops heating every few days and shows no error code. I can turn power off and on to the unit and it works again for a few days… then happens again. Any ideas?
I have a Rinnai tankless that when I open the cold water value, even slightly the burner would shut off, while I can open and close my hot water faucet all the way and the burner will not turn on until the cold water faucet is closed. What can cause an issue like that?
Our rinnai starts with hot water but after a few minutes gets cold. It doesn’t happen all the time. We had it cleaned with a new filter but, still having the same problem. Someone told me to install a pressure regulator for our water supply. But at this time I’m not sure how to fix this. Any suggestions?
Did they clean the filter on the cold water inlet? It also could be the outgoing thermistor that has a buildup on it. It’s common for this to happen after a flush. Try checking the filter first. Mike
Does anyone know where to find a video about the i120 water pressure sensor? I see it's a common problem but haven't been able to find any videos on it.
Great video and information. Question: When flushing the unit is is necessary to run the unit to enable adequate flow vs. unplug the unit during flushing. I have been told both ways. Thanks!
It probably leaking from the heat exchanger and coming through the fan. The only fix it to replace the heat exchanger but on a unit that old i5 would be advisable to install a new unit. Mike
Mike I have a GE GN75DNSRSA water heater that I believe is made by Rinnai everything points to the water servo do you have a cross reference to a Rinnai the GE part number is WS15X10063 any help would be apricated
The official Rinnai video says to remove the filter, rinse it clean, then reinstall before de-scaling; then remove, rinse clean, and reinstall again half way through descaling.
There wrong you want to have the inlet fully open to get the most solution through the heat exchanger. There is a lot of things Rinnai has on their site that are wrong. Remember there in a lab, I'm in the field lol
Hi there my Rinnai Continuum Model 2532. I can not find any information for my problem. I go to use the hot water and nothing, i then checked the control panel in our master bath and there was nothing like no power. i checked the circuit breaker i checked for power at the unit and it was getting power. I checked bother fuses in the unit and they were good. is it the circuit board? or should i check something else? thank you
My Rinnai Tankless heater has condensation at the top to where it vents outside . Code 79 came on with beeping. After turning off and on the code stopped. No other water is present anywhere. Here in western Canada we got a cold snap. Not sure if the cold weather caused excessive condensation to flip the error code on? Please advise?
Hi Mike, I disassemble the servo from the Flow valve by accident. I turned the knob in all direction and not sure what position it was wen I remove it. Can I put it pack in any position or does is have to fully close or open?
@@ThatTanklessGuy I was talking more about the the valve itself the the motor moved. When you turn it by hand like in the U-Tube video it move in and out. When I remove the white motor I moved the valve and didn't pay attention what was the original position before I change it. My question is, does the position of the valve matter when I put the white motor back on?
@@mathieugaudreault1064 uh sorry to revive a 3yr old thread. I did this as well. Did you figure out the answer? I reinstalled the valve and it appears the temperature got worse...
Wanted to leave an update here as I figured out that the position does matter. I opened up the motor assembly and saw a mechanism that appears to identify it's state. My theory is that an external controller tells the motor what state it should be in (high, med, low) and the motor just rotates itself until it's in the correct state. There's no feedback from the actual flow or valve so you do need to sync the valve and motor state. When reassembling I opened the valve all the way and adjusted the state mechanism to match based on the rotational direction of the knob. Hopes this helps someone in the future!
Mine isn't throwing a code and I just flushed it to see if i could fix it. It will shut off during long runs like a shower. 5 to 10 minutes and the water will get cold. RL94 and I am here because I suspected the flow sensor.
Hi Mike, My Rinnai RL75i is around 6 years old. This past weekend I flushed it with food grade vinegar, rinsed it and cleanded the filter. The heater did not want to ignite so I removed the Water flowturbine, cleaned it and reinstalled it. It works but if it is not in use for a few hours, it decides not to work. I flush it and it starts to work again. It seems like it will only work if I continue flushing it. What can cause this?
if it’s not doing nothing and you have no codes it’s dirt in the wster servo valve. thus will happen from time to time with us. you might have to remove the piece and clean it out. mike
I have searched over 100 combinations of "What does a Rinnai Tankless Water Heater Sound Like?" To my incredible surprise, THERE IS NOT ONE VIDEO IN THE WORLD ON LINE SHOWING THIS SYSTEM ACTAULLY RUNNING. WIll somebody please take a video of this thing ACTUALLY RUNNING! My system works fine, but it sounds like a small vacuum when the exhaust fan kicks on. It is kind of loud. I am wondering if this is normal.
Hi, my Rinnai doesn't give out hot water if I have only one tap on but works fine if either the recirculation is on OR I turn on another tap. Does that indicate a similar issue where something is stuck in the turbine or can it be a defective flow sensor?
I have a Rinnai model 2532 with continuum control pad. I have a slightly different problem which is it seems to trip back to 108 degF from our usual setting of 120 degF (we live in the mountains). It seems like an electrical trip - but nothing is happening at my circuit breaker so must be the unit - wondering if anyone else has experienced this or can advise a fix! Thanks!
Can low flow because of a clogged or obstructed water servo cause code 10? i have intermittent code 10, but cant seem to find the issue with blocked airflow as 10 siggests the problem is. thx
So comparing Rinnai to other brands of Tankless Water Heaters on the market -- Why Rinnai? All of your videos are great but it does seem you talk a lot about maintenance and repairs on the Rinnai tankless heaters!
I talk Maintance so people know what has to be done on them to last the 20 years if maintained properly. There are also units installed incorrectly I’m trying to let people know what has to be done to repair them

Does water come out when you pop the relief valve? You might have to remove the water flow valve and clean or replace it.
@@TheBuddylab nope nothing...😔not a drop...
@@TheBuddylab thanks I'll take apart today and check!
Hey Mike have you got a Rinnai flow simulator? It a small PCB that Plugs into the flow sensor harness and sends a simulated flow rate signal to the PCB. If the unit fires up then you know you have a Jamed turbine. Great diagnostic tool.
Did you make it yourself or is it a special tool from rinnai?
thanks so much for your time in posting this
Hey Mike, is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of WHEN the unit turns on? In the AM, I think our neighborhood water pressure must be falling cause the hot water volume in the am seems low.
With a RUR unit you need 50 psi for it to operate the unit correctly.
Turn #7 yellow dip switch to on
What does that do?
System starts and runs then I believe it over heats the shuts down . Let sit for a bit then repeats but I do believe water is hotter than 120 degrees that I have it set for?
Thank you very very much you were spot on took my tank apart and it’s back working
Hi Mike: My Rinnai RL75iP is around 12 years old. It runs whenever it wants to sometimes
You probably have some dirt in the water turbine valve causing the intermittent on off
Hi Mike, thanks for the great details for the Rinnai's.
Hey Mike, can you use white vinegar to descale the servo parts?
Hey Mike, That Tankless Guy is really easy to remember for me ! Good Luck - you have been very helpful. I have an RUC98i that does not turn on at low flow, no hot water (bathroom low flow sink fixtures). Took off the sink low flow guts and turned on the faucet and heater water came through. Should I switch out the sink filter and get away from "low flow" entanglements? Appreciate you!
Check all the aerators and shower heat filters
Is this what could cause a code 55 since it's dealing with the water flow?
Thanks brother! Great and useful video! 👍
Same here now. You figure it out?
My tank is heating sometimes good but sometimes it heats to warm but not hot. Could this be the turbine?.
Quick question I'm working maintenance at a hot springs resort And I have a rinnai tank less and when I turn hot water in tub to wide open flame cuts out any idea where to look?
Mike I want to get a logic diagram or sequence of operation for REU-VC2528W tankless non condensing V7.5e
removal of the Rinnai J-si8o f water servo valve, do you have a video?
Mike
Mike, mine is RU98, about 2016....
I have a e110Cn combi how do I replace the DHW heater exchanger? 2012 unit
Hello
I am having a lot of trouble keeping the water hot.
I just got the System flushed. But still won't stay hot after 1 min
Later
Did they clean the filter on the cold water inlet?
It also could be the outgoing thermistor that has a buildup on it. It’s common for this to happen after a flush. Try checking the filter first.
Mike
With such a high failure rate I wonder why rinnai doesn’t redesign it. Do you have any thoughts on prevention?
Clean the inlet wster filter often. Some cases extreme ones we installed a filter on the incoming cold water line.
Thanks!
Flush it with no power you don’t want the unit firing
I have a R85 that is leaking. Water is dripping from the fan motor. Any ideas on where the water is coming from and how to fix.
It probably leaking from the heat exchanger and coming through the fan. The only fix it to replace the heat exchanger but on a unit that old i5 would be advisable to install a new unit. Mike
@@TheBuddylab thanks Mike! That was What I was thinking. This water has been great! We have had it for 15years.
Thanks .My wife is so happy to have a hot shower on the weekend after I found grit in the flow sensor.
My rinnai r 75 won’t work after I did a flush.
Could it be the turbine?
Yes or dirty filter
Would this cause an 11 code?
Mike I have a GE GN75DNSRSA water heater that I believe is made by Rinnai everything points to the water servo do you have a cross reference to a Rinnai the GE part number is WS15X10063 any help would be apricated
Hello thank you very much for your info. But I need some serious help with my rinnai . Could u please help me? Is there a way we can get in contact?
Mine started pouring water from inside the casing what does this mean
I checked bother fuses in the unit and they were good. is it the circuit board? or should i check something else? thank you
It’s the OC board
Sorry PC
I have a RUR199iN model. is the turbine different in this model?
I wondered the same thing.
That’s a leak section code and yes excessive condensation would do that by dripping onto the sensor.
Thank you very much! Great channel. You got a new sub :)
One last question please..how can the condensation be prevented in winter months? I read this machine can have issues in colder weather :(
Send me a few pictures of the vent to my e mail address, economyplmbg@aol.com include what’s outside the house
Hi Mike, I disassemble the servo from the Flow valve by accident. I turned the knob in all direction and not sure what position it was wen I remove it. Can I put it pack in any position or does is have to fully close or open?
The white motor has to face the PC board
If you cleaned the inlet filter then it’s dirt in the water servo valve.
@@ThatTanklessGuy thanks for the reply
Hi Mike, My Rinnai RL75i is around 6 years old. This past weekend I flushed it with food grade vinegar, rinsed it and cleanded the filter. The heater did not want to ignite so I removed the Water flowturbine, cleaned it and reinstalled it. It works but if it is not in use for a few hours, it decides not to work. I flush it and it starts to work again. It seems like it will only work if I continue flushing it. What can cause this?
if it’s not doing nothing and you have no codes it’s dirt in the wster servo valve. thus will happen from time to time with us. you might have to remove the piece and clean it out. mike
Mike, thank you so much for responding back. I will do what you suggest and keep you posted on the results. Thank you once again.
@@rluque26 did the cleaning of the valve work for yiu?
@@rluque26 Yes I'm also very curious if this helped. Probably doing this tonight anyways.
Keywords matter “Rinnai Tankless Water Heater Makes Loud noise”. Now what videos pop up
What work bench is that?
Hi, my Rinnai doesn't give out hot water if I have only one tap on but works fine if either the recirculation is on OR I turn on another tap. Does that indicate a similar issue where something is stuck in the turbine or can it be a defective flow sensor?
I’m noticing this behavior as well. Did you ever identify if the turbine was the issue?
I have a Rinnai model 2532 with continuum control pad. I have a slightly different problem which is it seems to trip back to 108 degF from our usual setting of 120 degF (we live in the mountains). It seems like an electrical trip - but nothing is happening at my circuit breaker so must be the unit - wondering if anyone else has experienced this or can advise a fix! Thanks!
Can low flow because of a clogged or obstructed water servo cause code 10? i have intermittent code 10, but cant seem to find the issue with blocked airflow as 10 siggests the problem is. thx
No code 10 is sir flow it’s either something obstructing the incoming air a fan problem or a dirty burner.
