    CD/Limited Edition LP/Cassette: www.dominorecor...
Directed by Ben O'Brien and Dan Deacon
Produced by Dan Deacon and Ben O'Brien (www.showbeast.net www.benobrien.net)
The video co-directed by Ben O'Brien and Dan Deacon is based on a drawing game popular in the Baltimore art collective Wham City, which is in turn based on the game "telephone."
For the video, Dan and Ben filmed a simple 13-second scene. That scene was then shown to the next team. After seeing the video that team had 1 hour to recreate it -- characters, props, set, costumes, and actions -- as close to exactly as possible from only their memory.
The cast is made up of members of Wham City, Dan Deacon Ensemble, Ed Schrader's Music Beat, Future Islands, Red Room Collective, Copycat Theater, Effervescent Dance Collective, Showbeast, Annex Theater, Nuclear Power Pants, FlucT, BXDC, Bloody Panda, Foot Talk, Important Comics, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and various icons of the legendary Baltimore Arts Community.
TEAM 1: Dan Deacon and Ben O'Brien
TEAM 2: Mason Ross and Emma Alves
TEAM 3: Stefani Levin and Rachel London
TEAM 4: Ed Schrader and Devlin Rice
TEAM 5: Doreen Bolger and Gary Kachadourian
TEAM 6: Jimmy Joe Roche and Robby Rackleff
TEAM 7: Jordan Kasey and Martin Kasey

one of my favorite memories is dan deacon asking for water at a show. I had an unopened bottle and handed it to him. he chugged half of it and threw the rest on the crowd. suddenly everyone else did the same and the music came to an halt. dan said something like " i understand the inherent joy of throwing water around, but im getting f@*king electrocuted!" good times.

He was constantly shocking himself. I saw him perform this song over a plywood board of effects pedals in a warehouse that I'm pretty sure was broken into. Every few minutes he would just randomly scream after shocking himself. After the last song, he just screamed, ran out of the building, got in his car, and drove away, leaving all his equipment behind. I'm assuming that was a stunt, but no one there seemed to have any idea what to do with it.

You could tell some of them intentionally changed stuff in a drastic manner. The two types of people in a game of telephone. The ones who want to succeed and get the original phrase through as intact as possible, and the ones who completely change it to watch everyone's expression at the end of the line.

    • @ruffianoo

The Littlest Giant Sometimes what makes me blue: The game of telephone happens all day every day and there two more types at least; “whatever, good enough, they can figure it out”and; meh.
I am positive but this socks the negative into my gut.

i saw this video, watched it again, mailed it out to twelve of my friends with the subject line "yes", stole the mp3 and put it on loop while I showered, and started a word document entitled celebrationism which, so far, only has the link for this video in it.
    what a lovely, lovely video.

@@sirprintalot Ive been on a DD kick this past few weeks and this is at least the second time ive seen "i never knew of this guy until I saw Arcade Fire last night" and its just awesome to think of what a single (?) tour support can mean for an artist. Deacon seems like an artist most people can enjoy once they understand the scope of the experience I guess.

I remember hearing this song back in 2013ish..? I think? I had it in one of my old longboarding playlists in high school. I had it through an app that let you actually download music without using iTunes on my iPhone 4, but I lost the phone, and couldn’t find the video I had heard it in. I’ve spent the past two hours, non stop, trying to find this song again, and I can’t believe I actually found it again. I know this video’s nine years old, and there’s probably no one who will ever see this comment, but Dan, if you somehow see this, thank you so much for this absolute gift of music.

The best part is how the changes in the song match up with the changes in the video. The complexity of the song also matches with the complexity of the set. It seems as though the song was adjusted to fit the video rather than the other way around.

    Yeah I see your point.
I personally don't think most of those changes are intentional (at least we have no way of knowing since we don't know how many times they saw the tape and can only speculate what was intentional or not), but even if they are I still think it works as a concept.

It's like a game of telephone. You're supposed to pass on what you've learned from the last person, only some words, or things get 'lost in translation.' Sort of like ideals, morals, society in general etc.

I hope the movement in California, for all of theater workers - the actors and the crew - to become more of the same together, and collect the same dividends from the production, instead of this old system of treating people differently and pushing them down, gains more than just traction. It can be a popular movement because it's in line with what the audience already wants: to see talented people doing talented things. A lot of great things are happening in California, and the entire company is becoming aware of being part of the entire production, so anyone may at any time be in front of or behind the camera, writing a script or improvising the next element. I hope the east coast will have another artistic scene like this one, again, because all of the A/V production arts are ripe for it, to combine equity and also risky endeavour at the same time.
We just need people who can write contracts that don't bind workers DOWN, but bind them TOGETHER, in a way that is always pushing for the highest level of production. Production-centric, and production-driven, with profitability as an expectation, not a driving force. The production profits because the talent turns the resources into the draw, and the draw sells because the talent were passionate about the production. So if a production fails to profit, the only thing that dissolves is the current release or performance of the production, while the careers move on. So instead of CGI buttholes we just get a renaisseance of Cats the stage performance, where it was intended and where it shined. So instead of remaking the Transformers, and spending a decade hiding the shortcomings of CGI, we are instead treated to a new production and a new story that doesn't feel blemished. So when we make something with Feivel Mouskewitz, it isn't Monkey Ball in a soap-bubble. And so on.
Intellectual property rights as they have been, keep standing in the way of cast and crew profiting from re-releases. That needs to end! Re-release all day, every day, until society no longer begs to see it! It shouldn't require forty different legal teams forty entire years to release a popular film one more time. It shouldn't be a driving creative factor to have to write your way around that hurdle of entertainment, having to write a "reboot" that sucks compared to what opportunities await the writer who can expect to profit from writing something entirely new, because every worker is prepared to turn resources into entertainment and to sogn contracts that ensure the production delivers the fullest possible release, and not just a stroke against their record.

    BEAST ON MY BRAIN
    EVERY THOUGHT IS THE SAME
    IF THE BEAST IS CONTROLLED
    IT'LL NEVER TURN GOLD
    AND THAT'S JUST FINE
(WE DON'T OWN THE WORLD AROUND US)
    DON'T TOUCH THE FLAME
    OR THE BURNS IT BECAME
LIVE THE LIES YOU'VE BEEN SOLD
    AS A NIGHTMARE UNFOLDS
    IF YOU DON'T MIND
(NO HOPE COMES FROM THOSE WHO BOUND US)
    HEY THERE OLD OWL
    I'M LOST AND ALONE
    NO HEAD TO HOLD HIGH
BUT MY FEET KEEP ON GOING
    (EVOM UOY ,EVOM I NEHW)
    SPREAD THOSE WINGS WIDE
    AND TAKE ME ALONG
    NOW SHOW ME THE SKY
    THEN TELL ME I'M HOME
    (EVOM UOY ,EVOM I NEHW)
    HEY THERE OLD LADY
    PLEASE SING ME A SONG
    SING OF DAYS GONE BY
    BEFORE I WENT WRONG
    (EVOM UOY ,EVOM I NEHW)
HEY HEY HEY I DON'T KNOW
    WHICH WAY I'M GOING
WHEN I LOOK PAST YOUR EYES
    I CAN BARELY HANG ON
