Directed by Ben O'Brien and Dan Deacon
Produced by Dan Deacon and Ben O'Brien (www.showbeast.net www.benobrien.net)
The video co-directed by Ben O'Brien and Dan Deacon is based on a drawing game popular in the Baltimore art collective Wham City, which is in turn based on the game "telephone."
For the video, Dan and Ben filmed a simple 13-second scene. That scene was then shown to the next team. After seeing the video that team had 1 hour to recreate it -- characters, props, set, costumes, and actions -- as close to exactly as possible from only their memory.
The cast is made up of members of Wham City, Dan Deacon Ensemble, Ed Schrader's Music Beat, Future Islands, Red Room Collective, Copycat Theater, Effervescent Dance Collective, Showbeast, Annex Theater, Nuclear Power Pants, FlucT, BXDC, Bloody Panda, Foot Talk, Important Comics, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and various icons of the legendary Baltimore Arts Community.

one of my favorite memories is dan deacon asking for water at a show. I had an unopened bottle and handed it to him. he chugged half of it and threw the rest on the crowd. suddenly everyone else did the same and the music came to an halt. dan said something like " i understand the inherent joy of throwing water around, but im getting f@*king electrocuted!" good times.
He was constantly shocking himself. I saw him perform this song over a plywood board of effects pedals in a warehouse that I'm pretty sure was broken into. Every few minutes he would just randomly scream after shocking himself. After the last song, he just screamed, ran out of the building, got in his car, and drove away, leaving all his equipment behind. I'm assuming that was a stunt, but no one there seemed to have any idea what to do with it.
Still one of my favorite music videos of all time.
It's hard to explain how this music video effects me, but my heart always feels so vibrant and overwhelmed with pure joy every time I listen to it, and Dan has such a unique connection to the world and music that I just love knowing that him and his music exist.
Just makes you happy don’t it
I love how it just got progressively more insane
You could tell some of them intentionally changed stuff in a drastic manner. The two types of people in a game of telephone. The ones who want to succeed and get the original phrase through as intact as possible, and the ones who completely change it to watch everyone's expression at the end of the line.
The Littlest Giant Sometimes what makes me blue: The game of telephone happens all day every day and there two more types at least; “whatever, good enough, they can figure it out”and; meh.
I am positive but this socks the negative into my gut.
bet you're fun at parties
Ashley Coad
Okay.
@@ashleycoad1861 It's a valid observation.
Such is life my friend. The eternal struggle balancing these magnitudes of magnetic forces. We goin' gravitate to what we do ya know? This video is fucking genius and beautiful. One simple idea can become everything imaginable.
Ummm, how can anyone dislike this video. Its a bunch of friends having a rad time with a fun a shit concept. All under a catchy tune. Pretty much the most honest piece of visual work I have seen in a while.
i saw this video, watched it again, mailed it out to twelve of my friends with the subject line "yes", stole the mp3 and put it on loop while I showered, and started a word document entitled celebrationism which, so far, only has the link for this video in it.
what a lovely, lovely video.
Dan Deacon opened for Arcade Fire last night. One of the best openers ive seen. So glad i have found his great music
he was too quiet :(
Me too - I then went and saw him do his own show in DC the next time he came through.
I think I'd have lost my collective shit if I'd gone to see Arcade Fire and got Dan Deacon thrown in for free.
@@sirprintalot Ive been on a DD kick this past few weeks and this is at least the second time ive seen "i never knew of this guy until I saw Arcade Fire last night" and its just awesome to think of what a single (?) tour support can mean for an artist. Deacon seems like an artist most people can enjoy once they understand the scope of the experience I guess.
This is the happiest song I've ever heard! I can't help but smile and dance to it.
I remember hearing this song back in 2013ish..? I think? I had it in one of my old longboarding playlists in high school. I had it through an app that let you actually download music without using iTunes on my iPhone 4, but I lost the phone, and couldn’t find the video I had heard it in. I’ve spent the past two hours, non stop, trying to find this song again, and I can’t believe I actually found it again. I know this video’s nine years old, and there’s probably no one who will ever see this comment, but Dan, if you somehow see this, thank you so much for this absolute gift of music.
I love how increasingly chaotic they get. This would have been an absolute blast to make
Dan Deacon songs are so pretty...they make me tear up but from joy.
Go away
Okay?
Plinko Penguin so sorry, I replied to the wrong comment!
Ash Cooper Ouh lol I was confused.
This video is telling me that it's okay to just be happy and together.
Oh thank you Dan Deacon for once again creating a masterpiece, using , what I consider to be one of your greatest strengths, audience participation. I saw you in Cleveland a few years ago & I havn't been the same since and I sincerely thank you for that!!!!!!!!
If you hate this, you hate fun
I can only imagine how much fun these people had making this. Awesome music vid for an awesome song
I like how the attempt to clarify the drawing was of Odie caused the next group to assume it was a creature called "odif"
This is similar to an experiment I’ve wanted to do for years. Give a person an abstract drawing and let them try to replicate it in a few minutes, after the time is up give the drawing to the next person and repeat. After it has gone through hundreds of cycles, make it into an animation.
LET'S DO IT!!!
and with different group types of people.. homeless athletes, people in rehab 1st day n last day
Undeniable proof that people just want to have fun
The best visual demonstration of the harmfulness of rumors and gossip.
Somehow, someone added a a target made of paper on the ground and by the end of the chain I can imagine two people just crunching up construction paper screaming "We need more paper!"
i love dan deacon so much, he has such a unique brand of fun happy electronic music that's really interesting and also accessible, and this song and video just emphasizes that, everyone just being happy and having so much fun. Makes me smile
I remembered of this gem and spent 10 minutes remembering the title. what a nostalgia trip :'D
That was friggin dope
Have fun all the time no matter what happens
Just heard this song on a University of Phoenix commercial... hope you got paid for that Dan! In any event, good to hear some legit music in a commercial.
the spirit of a dan deacon gig distilled into a lil music video, chaotic and wonderful
this guy makes me so happy so frequently. i even got to meet him this last spring. that made me very happy. he signed my belly.
This is gonna be a super hard Easter 🐣
It's not pop art. It's just freaking art. It is. Art
The best part is how the changes in the song match up with the changes in the video. The complexity of the song also matches with the complexity of the set. It seems as though the song was adjusted to fit the video rather than the other way around.
I love the fact that as the video progresses, the actions get steadily more ridiculous. I love the video. Dan is the man.
Yeah I see your point.
I personally don't think most of those changes are intentional (at least we have no way of knowing since we don't know how many times they saw the tape and can only speculate what was intentional or not), but even if they are I still think it works as a concept.
Great job, all involved -- If you'll accept an aldecocker's praise, this reminds me of when music videos as a genre were actually a valid form of art. Thank you all for making me feel like a teenager again!
given how Dan Deacon shows usually go, this was probably all filmed at a show in one night using audience members... then there was a huge dance party and shit went nuts.
With all systems, refined energy resorts to chaos! creativity is a born of this rule, and this is beautiful example. dan deacon 4 lyf
the best song of the year, so far.
If the rest of the album is half THIS good, it'll be wonderful
9 years later and now it's in a TikTok ad of all things
They’re gonna ruin the song :(
It is? What’s the ad…?
THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN TO DO
That is the best music video of all time!!!!! Frolic! Frolic I say!
I love to see how like other fans behave - it's so joyful OMg I love the twins!!! 4:22 Rock Star - everyone is a Rock Star for a day!
似たような事繰り返してるのに見入ってしまう。なんか楽しい気分になるわー
Hell yes Dan, this is a great track, and a joyous videogram. Maximum vibes to you and yours.
Dan Deacon returned my keys during his show in iowa city.... thanks dan
The Happiest video on UA-cam.
Yo ví este video el día de su lanzamiento, ahora veo que fue estrenado hace 12 años y me hizo analizar mi entorno, en todo lo que ha pasado en ese tiempo.
Almost lost this video, I was looking for it. I found it by searching 'crystal cat' and finding Dan Deacon. It's wonderful.
This is awesome, it just gets crazier and crazier, what a great idea.
Awesome! The cinematic version of telephone
why is this so moving? i almost cried laughter tears.
It's like a game of telephone. You're supposed to pass on what you've learned from the last person, only some words, or things get 'lost in translation.' Sort of like ideals, morals, society in general etc.
Creative to say the least.
after like the 6th time watching this i didn't even notice that they had to remember what was on the shirts. i love this so much
I love this track. I've got a lot to catch up on. Is a lot of fun and you got yourself a new fan
I hope the movement in California, for all of theater workers - the actors and the crew - to become more of the same together, and collect the same dividends from the production, instead of this old system of treating people differently and pushing them down, gains more than just traction. It can be a popular movement because it's in line with what the audience already wants: to see talented people doing talented things. A lot of great things are happening in California, and the entire company is becoming aware of being part of the entire production, so anyone may at any time be in front of or behind the camera, writing a script or improvising the next element. I hope the east coast will have another artistic scene like this one, again, because all of the A/V production arts are ripe for it, to combine equity and also risky endeavour at the same time.
We just need people who can write contracts that don't bind workers DOWN, but bind them TOGETHER, in a way that is always pushing for the highest level of production. Production-centric, and production-driven, with profitability as an expectation, not a driving force. The production profits because the talent turns the resources into the draw, and the draw sells because the talent were passionate about the production. So if a production fails to profit, the only thing that dissolves is the current release or performance of the production, while the careers move on. So instead of CGI buttholes we just get a renaisseance of Cats the stage performance, where it was intended and where it shined. So instead of remaking the Transformers, and spending a decade hiding the shortcomings of CGI, we are instead treated to a new production and a new story that doesn't feel blemished. So when we make something with Feivel Mouskewitz, it isn't Monkey Ball in a soap-bubble. And so on.
Intellectual property rights as they have been, keep standing in the way of cast and crew profiting from re-releases. That needs to end! Re-release all day, every day, until society no longer begs to see it! It shouldn't require forty different legal teams forty entire years to release a popular film one more time. It shouldn't be a driving creative factor to have to write your way around that hurdle of entertainment, having to write a "reboot" that sucks compared to what opportunities await the writer who can expect to profit from writing something entirely new, because every worker is prepared to turn resources into entertainment and to sogn contracts that ensure the production delivers the fullest possible release, and not just a stroke against their record.
I know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who is high out of his mind right now and just loved that video.
The more I watch the more I like, it never gets boring.
that law of entropy...gets you every time.
Dan Dan Dan! What are we going to do about all this loveliness!?
The action progresses exponentially!
I love how they naturally speed up every time so by the end it becomes how fast can they complete it.
This is sensational. I enjoyed more every time I watched it again. I notice something new each time. Loved it. :)
And just like that. I found a new joy. Thanks Dan.
this just makes me so happy
The two who disliked this don't know what joy is. Had no idea Hitler and Gaddafi had access to UA-cam.
I love you Dan Deacon! Love from Greece xxx
Heard the song on HFS then watched the video. 1st time I thought WTF is this? 2nd time it was cute. Now I've watched it about 10 times, and it gets better every time I see it. AWESOME VIDEO!!!!! Great job to everyone involved!
Love that game, we play it here in Austin too! Draw a pic, next person writes the pic, then draw, then write, ad nauseum...
Dan Deacon has perfected the Telephone game.
everything about this is beautiful
Great idea for a video! Love you Dan!
This game sounds ridiculously fun. Great video.
RUMOR: This has probably been lost to time, but, part of the production involved each team also having the option of knowing which segment of the song their clip would play over.
Dan Deacon is performing in fresno for free. its gonna be awesome.
the most fun video of all time
What a great video, I was smiling the whole way through it
Just casually spotted my professor lol

BEAST ON MY BRAIN
EVERY THOUGHT IS THE SAME
IF THE BEAST IS CONTROLLED
IT'LL NEVER TURN GOLD
AND THAT'S JUST FINE
(WE DON'T OWN THE WORLD AROUND US)
DON'T TOUCH THE FLAME
OR THE BURNS IT BECAME
LIVE THE LIES YOU'VE BEEN SOLD
AS A NIGHTMARE UNFOLDS
IF YOU DON'T MIND
(NO HOPE COMES FROM THOSE WHO BOUND US)
HEY THERE OLD OWL
I'M LOST AND ALONE
NO HEAD TO HOLD HIGH
BUT MY FEET KEEP ON GOING
(EVOM UOY ,EVOM I NEHW)
SPREAD THOSE WINGS WIDE
AND TAKE ME ALONG
NOW SHOW ME THE SKY
THEN TELL ME I'M HOME
(EVOM UOY ,EVOM I NEHW)
HEY THERE OLD LADY
PLEASE SING ME A SONG
SING OF DAYS GONE BY
BEFORE I WENT WRONG
(EVOM UOY ,EVOM I NEHW)
HEY HEY HEY I DON'T KNOW
WHICH WAY I'M GOING
WHEN I LOOK PAST YOUR EYES
I CAN BARELY HANG ON
(EVOM UOY ,EVOM I NEHW)
I’m not for sure on these lyrics so if you know he says something else, just let me know 🤗

I love how the pile of trash in the corner turns into this gigantic heap in the middle of the room lol
This is so much fun.
this was uploaded on my birthday !!
+Ben Astarb I'm so glad 4 year olds are finally getting into Dan Deacon. I knew they'd come around to these classics.
+William Grizzell it's my generation! It's our turn now!

I don’t even know why this feels nostalgic.
