The thing about laura having no problems in silent hill i think is that since she's a innocent child she doesn't have any guilt or tortured past and the only person that can see or hear the creatures is james since they're a manifestation of his perverted mind
Huh... I was under the assumption that it was more of "sexual frustration" rather than perversion. I don't know, it's been a while since dabbling into his character background.

While I am also NOT an expert in Silent Hill lore, my inclination is to agree with @ZionsWorld , as I have never been given to think the James is a sexual deviant or predator. He’s an adult human, and has knowledge of sex and sexuality, and (obviously) sexual desire, but my impression has always been that he’s just an healthy adult. These days, there’s a large cadré of so-called ‘feminists’ out there who would have you believe that if you think of women as anything but shapeless potatoes in 30 layers of turtleneck jumpers and baggy trousers with boxer shorts beneath, you’re sexually perverted. This game-thank God-is not a product of this Neo-Puritanism, in which all heterosexual sexuality (i.e., sex that COULD result in procreation) is seen as ‘perverse’, but all kinds of biologically useless sexualities are celebrated and displayed in outrageously lewd and explicit fashion in the PUBLIC STREETS.
My point is, I think James is meant to be a bloke to whom the AVERAGE bloke can relate. However, i’ll gladly step aside for somebody who actually knows all the official lore, if it disagrees with me.
I like that you play different games. It gets dull when everyone is only playing the same new games all the time.
Ugh, this game is SO GOOD at using sound to induce anxiety and fear. Not in the cheap 'sudden loud scary music' way either, they do it just through ambient noises like whispers and glass breaking. It's so good and I've never played any game as good at it as SH2.
Watching old Let's Plays from March 2020 in 2023 and hearing the streamer talk about how Covid will hopefully be over in a few weeks. Oh you poor thing.

Silent Hill is a horrible place because it plays with your guilt.

I don't think she necessarily had cancer? It's never specified what she was sick with. I've seen some convincing examples for the theory that she died from complications from Lupus, which tends not to manifest until young adulthood (roughly the ages Mary and James are when it happens). There are quite a few different options for what she was sick with. Cancer and its treatments can definitely make you look sickly and skinny, and the radiation would make her lose her hair, but that doesn't quite sound severe enough for her to call herself a "monster" to me, somehow. An autoimmune disorder would work pretty well because if could have a wider range of side-effects that could also be more severe, like teeth and nails falling out. (I had an uncle who died of AIDS - he also had Hep C. At his wake, his body looked like a bad sfx dummy. This was another influence on why I thought Mary dying of something autoimmune-related made more sense than cancer - or at least, cancer alone.)
Yeah, the disease that Mary was dying from is never named and, if my early 2000's memory serves me right, this scene was always intended by the developers as one of the many examples of Maria gaslighting James throughout the game.
@@dungeonsanddobbers2683 Idk if any knows this but Mary is actually dead in james back seat of his car the WHOLE time lol. looked into some of the lore. I could be wrong but im pretty sure she was in the back seat the whole time. It was only 3 days if i remember correctly (weeks?) since she died not 3 years like he was saying obviously.
@@Steveyd92 "Mary in the trunk" is just a fan theory based on some sources of dubious canonicity suggesting that In Water is the canon ending to Silent Hill 2 (there is no canon ending to the game). It only became "Mary in the backseat" after Ito trolled the theorists by tweeting that "The Mary's body is on the back seat of James's car, not in the trunk"
Such a cool train of hints on that section with Laura... the heavy breathing, Laura that doesn't see any danger around her and meeting Mary a year prior when she's supposed to be dead since three years... then the fall into the otherworld right after! So good! The breathing is so heavy in the room where Maria was resting...
Joking about things like Covid-19 can be a coping mechanism for some people. It's knowing where to draw the line that matters. Which you do, so no worries.
Gab, the reason Laura can't get hurt isn't because she's a ghost, it's because Silent Hill manifests itself differently depending on the character's psyche. It looks different for James, Angela and Eddie cos they've all experienced some kind of trauma, which brought them to the town and the town is trying to make them deal with it. Laura is just a child and hasn't experienced anything like that so the town isn't dangerous for her, she doesn't see any of the monsters James sees. Hope that makes sense :) Love this series btw!

The reason why maria cares about laura because well, she was born from James's wish. Even though she didn't act exactly like mary. But, Mary and Maria share the same thought. They love and care for James and also laura.

Gosh I love this game, it's my favorite series to play with a friend and think about the symbolism. SH4 The Room is my favorite and I wouldn't have a problem with a full series of all of the games including Downpour and Homecoming. It's refreshing to see play throughs of these great games.
It's a rare sight to see a person who doesn't hate like half of the SH games. I'm with you here!

So, about Laura. The reason she didn’t get hurt is because she cannot see the monster. She still pure, doesn’t hv darkness inside her heart. That’s why nothing happened.

The old games that we grew up with will always be the best, remasters and remakes of those games included. RE3 hype! Just imagine the Silent Hill series being Remade with the new Resident Evil engine..

Having come here after watching Silent Hill 1 and then 3, I can say I agree with Gab that the nurses in 1 are creepier, but the ones in 3 are much faster and more aggressive! I was shocked by how quickly they swung the weapon that is in their hands
The music during that one point, I think around 15-20 minutes in when you where wondering what it reminded you of, it reminded me of the scene from the Princess Bride with the shrieking eels.
Maria needs to practice her social distancing.

Haven’t played this in a while but I believe when you take a few steps into a room and hit either the left or right trigger the camera angle switches so you can see what’s in front of you. I missed a lot less items doing it that way.

The Hospital in SH2 is still one of my fave levels. The nurses, PH, the Elevator. So good.

alright i am going to nerd this up a bit, but laura doesn't see What the main character is seeing. She sees a normal city while the main character and all the others see demented monsters etc. Each person has their own experiences while in silent hill. Silent hills feeds off the negative experiences people have or had.
loving the series, should have way more views. i've only played origins and shattered memories back in ps2 but didn't have the balls to finish any of them.
I like when Gab says: I hope we can get through it (covid) in the next couple of weeks. Wellllll...about that....those weeks turning into a year and so forth. Yikes.
And I am lucky to help with the covid situation at my job. I’m tired, but it saved lives, I’m sure.
Other people have pointed it out, but the reason Laura doesn't get hurt is because she's pure. Has no darkness to seek redemption for. Why she's in the town... I'm not sure. She could be there to be a link for James' redemption...
Either way, I wanted to point out something else. The monsters don't exist for anyone BUT James. At least not in that way. They're a way for James to punish himself, and explore parts of his subconscious. The nurses are sexualized because of his sexual frustration due to Mary being sick and in the hospital.
The patient demons (things that spit at you and crawl on the ground) I believe represent how he felt. Trapped.
The leg mannequin demons are, again, sexual frustration, but without the lens of the beautiful nurses he saw when he visited the hospital.
Pyramid Head looks like one of the executioners from the town's past. An appearance most suited for the one who must punish James for his sins.
Eddie keeps seeing corpses, I believe? As his way to be tortured. I'm not sure.
Angela has everything be on fire, as we see later in the game, as well as seeing filth, bugs, and representations of sexual abuse. When James' and Angela's “towns” meet, one of those sexual abuse representations is given monster form. It was a bed and two people having sex I think, representing Angela's father raping her.
The town's dark power always draws on SOMETHING to create the things we see and fight. In the first game, they're a mixture of Alessa's pain, fears, and twisted memories of her childhood/childhood stories. (dogs, which I THINK hurt her but could be wrong, doctors and nurses, which she was scared of, the lizard boss fight from the book...)
I once again recommend you watch “The REAL Silent Hill Experience” videos by TwinPerfect if you have time. They're... somewhat cringy, especially in the beginning, but they are wonderful at exploring and explaining all these things.
TRSHE is really required viewing for fans. Even if it's a little stiff and dull at the start... And then Fungo turned out to be... Well, I'm glad he got kicked off the team, tbqh.

Creepy fact about the box puzzle: The box belongs to Joseph, a patient who you can learn more about by reading the notes next to the ground floor save point. It describes how he lost his mind because he believed himself to be responsible for the death of his daughter. After reading the message on the wall next to the box, it gives us an implication of who the strands of hair belong to...
P.S. (with some spoilers), the town of Silent Hill manifests/materializes peoples' psychic contents and the reason why Laura is able to walk around care-free is because she is an innocent girl who doesn't have any darkness in her heart that the town could manifest.
I think Laura is another manifestation of Mary, like Maria is.
@@madquest8 The reason why I don't think Laura is a manifestation is because we can see her talk to Eddie at one point in the game, who is a real person. Whereas Maria all of a sudden didn't feel like going into the bowling place where Eddie and Laura were...

Norway is on lockdown too and so I’m thinking the less I go out the better. I ended up ordering the animal crossing game to my mailbox instead of risking it on the tram down to the shops. Hopefully I get it on Friday.

I forgot how much of this game was inspired by the movie Jacob's Ladder. If you haven't seen that movie and love this game I HIGHLY recommend checking it out! It's an older movie but it somewhat holds up.
