Good demonstration. I used to work for a company that use Mitutoyo Crysta Apex 7106 (2015), Metrology. PCDMIS is a 2012 CMM, Manual Measurement. Mitutoyo Crysta APEX 7106 is an Auto Measurement, AND Manual. The Smallest Probe They Had Is .010, ten thous of an inch. Auto Meas, means somebody has to write a program.
For manual alignments, I use one point. Then let the machine find the part in DCC. When checking more than one part, it lets the machine find each one each time. Also for alignments, older versions of PC-DMIS are sticklers for order of precedence. Level, rotate, then origin. It’s good idea to continue this practice. Also, when you use the “auto-align” button, the recall alignment goes back to “startup.”
You have to do the proper alignment or you’re not getting the correct readings. It’s not about being a stickler, it’s actually using the machine correctly.
Does anyone know of a video for step (offset) datum alignment particularly for a casting point alignment where -B- has two casting points to align to but are offset from each other?
With a step datum there is usually a basic dimension telling the difference. I take points on the 2 surfaces and project the step points using the basic dimension. Then I create a plane using the projected points and the points that didn't need to be projected.

Always best to do your manual alignment directly off or the same as the DCC datum structure alignment. Using other features will always have or add more deviation. So do both alignments off the same exact features. Always.
Im having a problem with the machine losing its place between manual alignment and auto mode. For some reason it wants to travel 111.3 inches to find the part i just aligned.
I'm new to pc-dmis. What am I doing wrong when my program says to pic 1 of 3 points, I then go to the machine and the probe will not beep. I will let me smash the probe if I keep going. I've watched your video 50 times, I am doing everything the way you say to. I know its something simple but I have nobody to ask. Thanks
turn off the computer and the cmm. turn on the cmm and wait until the light on the jogbox stops flashing. then turn on the computer. start pc-dmis then follow the prompts. the hits should now register.
Plane-plane-plane alignment is not necessarily linked into GDT datums on controlling document. Why not align to key features vs what is convenient. Castings will be very different for part alignment to CMM.
Hello, I'm trying to use a READPOINT to locate my part and then have the DCC take over and do a 6 point per Plane pickup for making sure all Planes are good. A well known "teaching" company has a video on READPOINT's on UA-cam, but they don't execute the code with an alignment and frankly the video is almost useless to me without showing the process the whole way through. You seem to have a firm grasp on this software, can you do a video showing this? I know it is a lot to ask, but it would be greatly appreciated.
After watching video I was so positive that I can use cad for my free state part program but I guess it's not that easy. My cad models are in car position. Any thoughts how to use that Cad model?
if you applied a clearance plane on your part it would not try and go thru the part. Just set your clearance plane to .250 or .500 prior to the DCC and it will never crash.
You gotta see his other video 😳 It’s weird that he knows about inserting move points and clearance cubes but doesn’t know about setting a clearance plane?!
What I’m gods name is this guy doing?! Please get him away from the CMM because he doesn’t really understand what he’s doing! Obviously if he did his first alignment physically on the part it wouldn’t magically “match-up” on the CAD model; how would the machine know where the part is, there is no link from what he first did! There is nothing wrong with making a program without CAD so it don’t understand what he’s talking about 🙄 He is doing things so ass-backwards and don’t get me started on him not setting a clearance plane and just letting the probe crash into the part.

Make sure to run the manual alignment before programming in DCC mode

It doesn't matter. Just set DCC mode first, then align.

But how to do you apply 321 alignment for a circular body?
I don't think you can, unless you have additional features on the circular body that determines the 1 in 321.
You don’t need to control rotation on a round part. Let the machine axis control it.
could you do a video on using transform function in pcdmis?
It won’t constrain the about Z rotation
