- John William's Disco version of the famous CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND theme wich was originally released as a 45" together with the soundtrack album. It was later re-released on a CD issue of the OST were it featured as a bonus track. This is the version from that CD and therefor it is digitalized and does not suffer from vinyl crackles :-)
It's funny when you hear these old songs and then remember where you were and what you were doing, it makes you want to cry sometimes.
I was a kid around 9 - 10 years old, times were a lot happier. You still had hope and the world hadn't let you down just yet.
You are so right! Thank God for tech to preserve it all!
I was about 11 or 12 when this would have been out. Since Meco's disco remakes were the most well known, I had begun to think I had straight up imagined this version. But this has always been my favorite; willing to use dissonance and counterpoint in a way that most songs, and certainly most disco songs were not willing or able to do. In this way, it's far more faithful to John Williams' natural tendency to use such tension and counterpoint in his music. Glad I found it again. A much needed respite from, dare I say, the more simplistic music...and culture...of today.
I was about that age myself. I think I was 11?
I had this single when I was a kid. I also had Pac Man Fever (in fact I still have that one)
Amen bro
Only John Williams could make a classical movie soundtrack that features an oboe-tuba duel that translates to disco and still kicks after 40 years.
Miami, Florida...December 1977...rare "cold" night for Miami.....riding with my Mom to go shopping....hearing this on Y100 for the first time.....it was magical...I was 12 years old and had just seen the movie.
+ultimafuelie Wow, didn't know Y100 is that old
you were 12 too in 1977? :) me too. birthday in June.
ultimafuelie - awww, this reminds me of riding with MY ma in her big red '73 torino elite on lake shore drive, and this was on WLS a lot.
@@brendaleake I was 13 at the time.
Ironically the first time I heard this was on vacation with my parents as a kid in February 1978. OMG. wow!
This song conjures more nostalgic sci-fi good feels in 3 and half minutes than Stranger Things has been able to do in damn near 30 hours
Because we were there and this was the sound.
Epic
God Almighty, I heard this cover when I was a kid & it STILL brings the chills! Disco or not, this version works!
On 2nd thought, it's actually more funk than disco, but both elements are there.
@@scotcarr3390 still think it's funk?
@@bigworm3828 Look, there was a LOT of fusion music in the '70s. Can be both....😝

I skated to this at the roller rink in 1977, age 9. That was the year I was wowed by two amazing sci-fi movies: Star Wars and CE! Nostalgia forever.
ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO I BOUGHT THE VINYL AND IN THE ALBUM THERE WAS ANOTHER 45 RPM VINYL ( AS A BONUS ) WITH THIS VERSION. VERY SPECIAL PIECE OF MUSIC. VERY GOOD CHOICE. GREETINGS FROM GREECE THANKS
I last listened to this song in 1978. Still my favorite. I found it today listening to xm radio with AT 40
Takes you to another place
It takes you to a better place, too.
I remember sitting in the floor listening to this on my old famous plastic orange and white record player! 😂
This version does not suck.
Brings back memories. I remember listening to this on the radio while getting dressed for middle school in the morning :-)
I wore this 45 out when I was a kid. My dad listened to the lp and I took this record to my room! I wish I knew how special those days really were, but I'm thankful that I can remember them like they just happened.
We had the LP and single when I was a kid, too. The single had the same size hole in the middle as an LP, and the b-side was blank! I still have both in storage someplace.
I remember as a kid I bought this version by mistake when I wanted Meco's version instead. But in the end I love this version much more.
Gene Page - Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) is the better version.
Me too. Better than Meco's.
OMG!! I have been looking for this song for years. As a child I remember seeing the movie, but falling in love with this song. I never knew where to find it, but I'm so glad you posted this.
This is better than I remember! it's gotta Funky jazz/fusion kind of sound with strings
I bought the soundtrack in '77 and this little gem was included! Like how cool was that!
The 70's were totally AWESOME! I still have them - MINT!
This was heard on Price is Right episodes themed around the Time Capsule.
0:38 it starts on as the models open the capsule.
YES!!! That's where I first heard this particular version! And I could never find it anywhere else and began to think I'd imagined it. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
Of course, it was preceded by the theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture (later Star Trek: TNG).
Got the soundtrack album when it came out originally. This was included as an added extra, on a 45-sized 33 1/3 single. I still have (AND play!) both…😎🎼🎵❤️
1977 always my favorite childhood memories especially the two movies I💗💗💗is Star Wars and Close Encounters of the third kind and the disco music from the movie, those were the special days😀😀😀😀😀
I may not not have grown up with these songs and these films but they will always have my respect and love, I remember when I was 9 and saw my first star wars movie back in 2015, awesome, that's when I found a love for 70-80s culture
They are powerful as ever!
Have you heard the Star Wars Theme Disco track?

Headed into 2020 and it still holds up. Such good music.
I have been looking for this for YEARS! (I just wish I had this version!) Oh my happy "tween" years when my life revolved around Star Wars & Disco and radio stations played everything!
I remember hearing this on WLS 89 Chicago a lot when I was in the 7th grade (spring 1978) after seeing the movie!
I pulled off a great comeback in 6th grade using this song as motivation. I was on the verge of flunking in Jan came back to get AB honor roll!!! I had a veteran teacher tell me in her 14 years of teaching she had never seen anything like it!!!
I have this album somewhere in storage. I got my mom to buy it for me when I was 8 years old at our local Thrifty Drugs Store back in '78.
Love this version and comment from 1Blastarr it was 1977 and at just 17 for me, the world was my oyster - a different time, place, and feeling. Indeed many adventures lie ahead which echoes the spirit of this song.
Had this 45 when I was a kid, won it from our local AM station WBBF
CONGRATS!!
Just found this at my local vinyl store for a dollar and I’m ecstatic
I remember hearing this back in 77 I was 10 year's old awesome movie hand's down I love 👾👽 UFO movie's
Haven’t heard this wonderful track in years. In the year it was released, I went to see the movie five times in a row. Still have the original LP with this track on it too, sitting in storage.
OMG! Tears in my eyes! All those fond memories of friends & family who are lost & gone
Well said, I couldn't agree more.
I know...
I have VIVID memories of hearing this song at 9 years old, while riding in my dad's car to help his friend chop logs in the woods. I loved the movie, but hearing this song had an impact on me for some reason. Thanks for uploading this, I honestly thought the entire thing was in my imagination.
1977 - December on Will Rogers Turnpike near Tulsa, OK - headed back to San Diego, Ca and my ship! I'll never forget it !! A beautiful version!!!
i remember this tune as the saturday night wrestling which was broadcasted live from will rogers colisium in dallas in the late 70/early 80s. the von erichs were there.
This is the best music associated with the movie-I was going through tough times when I first heard this song on WTMA in Charleston, SC in 1977. The song reminds me that you can get through uncertain waters.
Bravissimo John Williams nell'arricchire di tanti strumenti e dare ritmo a questo brano fatto di solo 5 note ripetute!!! Italy
One of the Many greats from The Great John Williams
My parents took us kids to see this movie.
My Daddy bought this 45.
Oh the memories 😊👽
The first time I heard this song was when I first visited Florida from NY as a little kid with my parents. I overcame my fear of flying on that same trip. We went to Miami then Orlando (Disney World) then Cape Canaveral / Kennedy Space Center with that song in my head and was so happy (aliens and space travel inspiring me)! What memories. Thanks for posting this!
Sounds very Earth, Wind & Fire - ish ...LOL
Love it !
I remember watching the old Oklahoma Sooners playback shows and seeing Billy Sims running highlights back in 1978 to this song. BOOMER!
Heard this on 8 track that my Dad recorded off the radio in Dec 1977 on the New Years Eve program " the Hits of 1977".Did not see the movie until 1981 on HBO.Wish I could have seen it in Jan 1978 when I was 10.
I concur. This was part of the OST, and YES... I heard it on 8-track as well. I miss the 8-track, but not the "click" from the changing of channels. LOL.
I did see at 11 but I've gotta say you're better seeing it slightly older, the mental stress stuff from Roy and his wife was awkward at 11.
I love this classic also and had this 45 when I was a kid as well. Yes, I was my mothers disco partner. Wish I could down load it o a cd.
This song virtually made me.
Love it. I remember this as a young boy.
I bought the vinyl soundtrack LP as a kid and wore it out. This track brings back memories.
I spent a whole day searching for this. FINALLY. Now if only a full orchestra would play THIS version.
It is 7.30.24! Why am I just now hearing this version for the very 1st time!
I was 11 years old and I would draw a pitcure of a U.F.O. whe I'd hear this on the radio. We did not have a TV half the time, this music means a lot to me.
As a 13 year , when I first saw this movie when my grandpa show it to me, I was supprise and liked, it was not any alien movies like alien predator or the other ones
Still listening to it november 2021
The Price is Right: The Barker Era brought me here!
The scene were the aliens come for the kid in the house was brilliant and scary. A true classic film.👍👍👍
I danced to this in my living room when I was nine. I still have the 45, though no turn table. Thank you for posting here. I loved seeing the film again in theaters when it was released a couple months ago.
Has a Bob James feel to it. Awesome.
DISCO...the universal language.
Thank you so much for re-posting, wow it has been at least 30 year since the last time I had the pleasure to enjoy this wonderful and magical piece. Thanks so much again!!! =)
Oh, yeah. Had to hear it one more time...
Wow...been looking for this version of Close Encounters for over 15 years. Finally found it! It took me back 33 years to when I was just 8 years old and heard it on the radio after the movie came out. I too felt like Julie Abraham, I was wondering if I had only dreamed this version...but I finally found it. I've already ripped it to MP3. Thanks Starglance!!!
I love this “Version” of this “Theme” of this “Movie” !!!!
This mix is so much fun! And well written!
Sure, it's a disco version of a movie theme (something that was popular at the time), but it's EXTREMELY competent for the genre. It appeared on a version of the Close Encounters score and was sold as a single, so it was done at least in part with John Williams participation/approval. I love it.
No in part there. John was 100% involved with this one. It surprised me as a kid that he composed, orchestrated, and conducted this version. He also produced it alongside Rick Chertoff, who produced many hit songs such as Girls Just Wanna Have Fun among others.
I remember hearing this tune in my teen years it takes me back in time I just have to hear it now and then!!
If you watch the old Price is Right shows on Pluto TV, this version appears frequently in the showcase showdown when they do a segment involving a “time capsule “. Little did they know how accurate this would be 4 decades later
Get on down, funky mama. We got Disco fever and the only prescription is more cow bell !
Back in 1977 the two movies I love the most is Star wars and Close encounters of the third kind I was crazy as a kid loving those science fiction movies about aliens spaceships and robots the movie close encounters the aliens are peaceful before V Independence day and Battle LA but let's keep that in mind the universe is big that means there have to be alien planets outside of our solar system Have SETI@HOME on my computer and I hope if I pick up an alien signal let's also hope if the aliens are peaceful not dangerous like V or Battle LA I do not want to meet them on a dark night.
to be honest with you guys 1977 is a special year especially for two science fiction movies call me crazy but that is my special childhood wishing to go outer space to encounter strange alien life forms and stranger planets i do anything to get my special childhood back.
Kevin Tillmon Always in your heart mate :) I know how you feel though. Close encounters was a pivotal moment in my life.
Agreed Jeff
Ditto!
40 years ago I saw this movie in the theater, I was in 7th grade. and this was all over the radio!
Chills... I remember so vivid and clearly the day back in 1977 when I watched this movie for the first time. Being a UFO enthusiast, I was literally in shock with this movie...
Gosh, this takes me back….
Just like everyone else...loved this song in the 70's as a kid. Forgot about it...then oddly enough, was watching James Bond (Moonraker. 1979). The security pad on the door to the chem lab in Venice played the 5 note CEOTTK Theme. It all came back and found this song. How's that for unlocking a dusty corner of the mind?!? I forgot how FUNKY it was and still is! Bad-Ass bass synth and tympani.
As I review the comments..it makes me sentimental..the instrumental takes over my mental..orchestrated by a time ..that was easy and simple..my only lament was a pimple..I'm into those sweet memories..the birds and the bees..fantasies of ALIENS landing amongst the trees...these times were the most..and encounter that's really close..to my heart..AWESOME 💕💕💕😊😊😊😱😱😱🙈🙉🙊🧞♀️🧞♀️🧞♀️
Thank you for this! When this was a hit, I used to hear it every day having to get up really early to go to mass to be an altarboy. Will forever haunt my brain, in a good way ...
The Best Version yet!!! Thank you for posting
Had the 45, had the poster. Still making mashed potato sculptures to this day! 😂
Thank you for uploading this! I've been looking for this for years
I own this, but my 45 is worn out because I played it over and over as an 8-9 year old in 1977.
I had this on a 45, it was nice. Nobody ever made a replica of the mother ship.
Priceless....................
I've in a life time beautiful memory.
I love searching for rare music, just to get that (Childhood Flashback for a few seconds). When I find that rare song, as an analyst, I can't help but check out the videos that person posted or liked on UA-cam. Many times, I find they like the same music videos, movies, hobbies, political choices, etc That I like. Suddenly I don't Feel so Alone in this world.
Incredible track
Still have the album and 45...thanks for posting this
I still remember this. It was popular when I was in Bayonne New Jersey in 1977 playing stickball on the street with my friends.
i had this at my nana's house as a kid...loved it
I remember a local public affairs show used this as their music. I haven't heard this in years. Thanks!
Great Music gives One chills! This One does just that! Music at it's Best
Thanks for posting. I can't find this anywhere. I always thought it was the best of the movie theme variations that were on the radio at the time. I didn't know Williams himself did it!
Thank you. really nostalgic!
We were rocking to this, this Christmas. Father Unit got it on 45 from the Son Unit. So GOOD!
Coming up on the 40th Anniversary of this remarkable film.
Old World Class Championship Wrestling Theme from the 70s KTVT CHANNEL 11 DFW, big time memories.
This brings us back memories
Man thats cool loved the movie when I was a kid always tried to play the notes on my toy piano never could!!
That tuba player kills it in this.
No joke. Those climactic trills that start around 2:13 are really expressive. I didn't know that was possible with a tuba.
Priceless.... Happy 4oth
1978 I’m 20 and life was good!
Great Times! Loved It!
Classic and timeless, I still listen to this to bring back the memories😢❤
It's Coast to Coast with Casey Kasem........Steadily climbing & up 3 notches from last wk! If loving you is wrong! I don't wanna be right!
We had this on vinyl! Oh yeah!
This song use to be the opening theme for wrestling coming out of the Dallas Ft. Worth , Texas when I was 6 to 10 years old. It bring back alot of memories with the Von Ericks wrestling family.
The 1977 Minnesota Vikings with Francis Asbury Tarkenton
I remember this on the radio many years ago
