  • Though death was not God's original plan for His creation, through the sin of Adam, death entered the entire human race and has reigned ever since. As we explore the 1500 years of history covered in Chapters 5 and 6 of Genesis, the fruit of sin is evident. We'll discover that from the murder of Abel through the descendants of Cain, love of self ruled in the hearts of men, but those in Christ must rule over sin and let the love of God be our motivation.
This teaching is from our series Genesis - 2009 with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Church.

How we worship is so personal, especially when from the, heart. One min. smiling, then in a moment so overwhelmed with emotion, there are no words. TY Pastor for reminding us that we mere humans are able to overcome Satan through the Power and Might of our Savior, Jesus Christ!!! Hallelujah!!!

I think there's a movie based on the book you mentioned at 26:20. It's called The Ghost and the Darkness. Val Kilmer plays in it. If I remember, it's actually a really good film. It's been years since I've seen it or even thought about it. The analogy makes perfect sense and you couldn't have chosen a better story to emphasize it.
It truly is always there waiting for that perfect moment of weakness. That one second when we take our eyes off Jesus. Same with those lions. They waited until they could get close enough and didn't even hesitate.
Thank you for your teaching, Pastor Skip.

How does the sin of Adam spread to all mankind?

    • @CalvaryABQ

Thanks so much for reaching out. My name is Jason and I’m on the pastoral staff here at Calvary Church.
That’s a good question. We know this is true because of verses like Romans 5:12.
“Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned”
The process this verse describes is Adam sinned and sin leads to death. All people experience death because they have all sinned.
Adam and Eve were made in the image of God. That image was marred by sin and then conferred to all their descendants. This passed-on sin is known as inherited sin. Just as we inherit physical characteristics from our parents, we inherit our sinful nature from Adam. Just like how we inherited physical attributes from our parents like eye color and skin tone, we also inherit spiritual qualities.
There are other verses that talk about this inherited sin. David wrote that he was born a sinner.
“For I was born a sinner- yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.” Ps 51:5
This could only be true if we all have a sin nature that was passed down via Adam. The result of this is we all choose to sin as well. This is why Paul can state with confidence “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” in Romans 3:23. Without an inherited sin nature he wouldn’t be able to make that claim with certainty.
The good news is however is there is a “second Adam”, Jesus Christ. In Romans 5:17 we learn there is one man who can undo what happened with Adam and opens the way for all to be saved.
“For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.”

genealogist in the bible. When we meet a new person the question is, What are you doing, the answer may be I am a doctor. But the question of the Jews was, Who were your ancestors?
