Part 1 of 2. Classic Game Room HD reviews the Hyperkin RETRON 3. Part 2 here • Classic Game Room - RE... This is a video game console that plays Super Nintendo SNES, Nintendo 8-bit NES and 16-bit Sega Genesis video games. It even has S-Video (which works for Genesis and SNES) as well as standard composite video. The Retron3 comes with 2 wireless controllers which are acceptable for NES games but have poor Genesis button mapping. More importantly though, the Retron 3 allows you to play with your original controllers for Genesis, NES and SNES!! Now, that's a feature!! This CGR review of the Hyperkin Retron 3 shows gameplay from several video games including Gaiares on Genesis, Ultraman on SNES and Zanac on Nintendo Entertainment System NES. This video shows the s-video quality of the Hyperkin Retron3 compared to a modified Sega Genesis Model 1 and demonstrates the audio quality. Video quality is very impressive and audio is not bad, although it lacks some of the dynamics that the original Genesis produces. Overall performance was awesome and CGR thinks that this console should not be overlooked when shopping for replacement old school systems. Flexibility, quality and original controller compatibility make the Retron 3 a bombastic classic video game console. - Розваги
I like that this review is on the actual Hyperkin product page.
"But these days, 'Hi there', you don't have to do that."
"They all have different voices, I like that"
Classic. ;D
You're awesome Mark.
"They all have different voices, I like that" lmao
Give it 20 years and well have this for PS3, 360 and Wii.
TheOrangeType love it
Minus the wii hopefully.
@@Smol-bug I changed my view on the Wii after I learned how to mod it. It's now one of my top favorite systems.
@@crackerjackrappr Character development at it's finest
I got one of these for Christmas a few years back. Love the heck out of it.
Ive been interested in one of these Mark. Good review. Looks like a useful system. You should do a review of your whole game collection!
I'll take the sound quality of the Retron 3 over an ATGames Sega Genesis any day!
Mark, you always do such a fantastic job with these reviews; Classic Game Room is my favorite program on UA-cam. Keep up the great work. I would love to visit the new Intergalactic Space Arcade sometime!
Fuck XBOX ONE or PS4! THIS SHIT IS WHAT I WANT :D
Is your body ready?
I've gotten more out of I've of these then my Xbox one lol
Old school games are the bomb. I am only 14 years old and I have a NES and GB Micro at my house. Yet I'm still looking forward to the Retron 5!
Yeah you can hardly find a modern game as good as one from the 80's or 90's.
I'm 10, and I have a Genesis, Super Nintendo, and Gameboy COLOR.
nice i finally just got a sega dreamcast and i am playing the hell out of it
Saul Roman-Vega Well my friend, can I recommend a good console if you got the money?
Nintendo 64.
Great console.
Well, hell yeah you're right. I played that thing in my cousin's house when I was just 7. Great console, especially its games like Goldeneye, Starfox 64, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and the original Super Smash Bros.
Cool. I got a ton of those games and still play them very frequently. Awesome.
3 successful game consoles in 1? My childhood dreams come true!
I have a RetroN3 and I LOVE it. I grew up with all the original systems- like you said- all hooked up with various power-strips for the ac-adapters in my room. When you add even MORE systems to that, well- it can get pretty annoying...
Instead of re-buying all the individual systems now, as an adult, and taking the chance on if they'll work properly (or at all), let alone finding them for reasonable prices to begin with; I picked this system up. Mine is red- but it's the same thing...
The major setback that causes me to avoid getting one is the sound chip used with the NES games. It's the most obvious when you play Mario games, that they sound VERY different compared to the original hardware. It's a minor complaint to some, but for me, it's major.
+Jon X MacLennan Yeah. Mario's signature Power Up and Jump sounds are way different. That's not supposed to happen! If you think that's bad, the Super Nintendo sound chip (on mine, anyway) has a major distortion problem, and any game u play sounds like a Rob Zombie death metal concert lol
*****
Really? Dayum!
I only know about the Retron's soundchip thanks to Proton Jon's Random Streams. He played Mario 1, 2 and 3.
+Jon X MacLennan not to mention once the games are in the system they get stuck in there, cuz the retron 3 doesnt have an eject buttonor anythin and u risk damaging the cartridges cuz u gotta really YANK em out. screw that!
*****
Genesis cartridges being the exception. No single Genesis model has an eject button (not even the SNES look alike, Model 2).
The retron 3 is better then the retron 5. It actually plays the games. No emulation unlike the retron 5.
I've been interested in buying the 5th gen, but for 140 bucks, I think I'd be happier with a gen 3 for around 50 dollars simply because I'm more interested in the nes, super, and Sega purposes of gameplay. Why? The wires. The wires covering the floor all around the entertainment center are an absolute pain especially if you have modern day systems included on the same t.v. in your mancave. I have a game boy and 3ds, so none of those deal with the mess of wires you have to deal with on the nes, super, and sega consoles, so the fact the retron 5 plays portable games as a bonus isn't quite worth the extra 100 bucks. Perhaps if the retron 5 played 64 games then it would have more of my attention and $$$. Retron 3 seems to be the best outta 5.
Dee Ray Well said.
+Fuhrer Pingas but no HDMI
xXMXxUNLIMITED Who actually cares about hdmi on a console with exclusively pixel graphics?
+Fuhrer Pingas Anyone with a modern tv that doesnt have the old inputs which is a lot of them.
This review convinced me to by this system! I got it in the mail and I love it. Thanks so much Mark!

I've had this for about a month or so, and it works really well. Theres only a few downsides, and their not much disadvantages but more just little annoyances.
3:19 Why modify a genesis for s video when its capable of RGB scart a way better video format?
Because this console is specifically for the US market, and SCART is a European format, it's very hard to find an American television that has SCART output.
Bavarian Blood So use a scart to hdmi or scart to component adapter. Wait they have actual been some U.S TV'S that support scart? Which one?
Bavarian Blood I live in America and I have all my old Retros connected with scart RGB. Its the only true way to play retros on new flat screen tvs. Its very easy to do and find all the connections needed with Ebay. its worth every single penny. I love playing the systems now with RGB and the XRGB mini. And ya i laughed when i heard S video and not RGB....
JCHGaming69 Because he didn’t know about it in 2008/2010
What about the Vextrex
I watched this review almost two weeks ago. As a result of having watched this, I bought a Retron 3. It paid off in every respect possible, and even enhanced the graphics of my NES games through S-Video.
Poor ol' Lord Karnage must've gotten axed on said NES issue, as his NES slot only worked through RCA cable. I have a feeling it's the S-Video cable provided with his system as the S-Video cable included with the Retron 3 is terrible. It didn't even work for me, it easily slipped out of my S-Video coupler. Instead, I used some S-Video cable I already had, in order to work the system.
I noticed some people are having trouble booting some of their hardware. I formerly had that problem before I learned how to clean the cartridge with only a Q-Tip and water. I'll post a video on that the next time I buy a cartridge, and maybe that'll fix your problems.
All in all, my review of the Retron 3 is highly praising, as it fixed my problem with non-functional NES cartridges and got me an S-Video based Genesis system. The SNES games work just as well as my SNES, and a little better at that.
I'm so glad to have Retron 3.
We need PAL version of this.
Do the new retron 5
I just want to say...
THANK YOU!!!!, your review rocks!
Love the humor :)
Keep it up!
I'm glad I watched this video. I figured the sound was off on the Retron 3 for Gen games. I haven't tested it for the others yet.
Gasp!!! haha
feed me
I love the music that plays while he said that!
Your commentary is on point. "Gasp." Love it dude.
I love the satirical feel to your videos. Made me laugh yet I am intrigued by the availability of this console. We don't have them in Japan for retail anywhere. Yahoo auction has a few but they are very expensive for what they are.
Emulator rules -_-
I prefer the real console not emulation.
It's not emulating it rips the games off the chip and transfers it to s-video or composite stereo.
FirstPersonGamer Pretty sure the consoles run emulation, not actual hardware
James Pyle It doesn't emulate it though with a program, and it doesn't have actual hardware, it rips the game off the chip into digital video.
FirstPersonGamer That doesn't even make sense? It has to either emulate the hardware, or have the hardware.
So I looked it up. It does rip the ROM to local memory (I assume what you were trying to say) but it still runs them via emulators, much like you can run on a PC. So as I originally stated, I prefer my real consoles to this console that emulates them.
I do have such console for years now...
It's called a small PC connected to the TV via HDMI cable. In addition to PC I do have 4x USB dualshock gamepads. On my PC I do have emulators of PS1, PS2, N64, SNES, NES, Genesis, Megadrive. And the PC can by itself play most of Xbox and 360 games (cause they're ofter relesed for PC). I will add, that I do own those consoles and I do have tons of physical games for them. They're secured in my room. PS2 is exepction- I love it so it will stay near TV.
Ur review made me buy one, and I've been ol school cartridge hunting ever since!
Just plug in a laptop with a hdmi and use emulators
that bit you did about the blue hair was hilarious.
thank you for the review cgr
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm enjoying mine that I got from a local shop now :) Killer hardware!
I ever dream on have this console when i was a kid to play all these dinosaurus games era. Very good to see this information even late for 20 years since i was dreaming haha : D
Awesome system. Planning on mine .
I have all three consoles but got the Retron 3 so I did not have to use my systems. The thing works great and I love it. Mine plays every game perfectly, even Mario RPG that I have heard would not play on it. It is awesome being able to use the actual controllers.
I just got my Retron 3 in red. It's pretty awesome
I've never laughed at a console review before! Subbed!!!
LOL way to bring the NES to life. I enjoyed the personality you gave to it
Feed me! Can't believe u put in cyborg justice. That's the reason I'm looking to buy this retron cuz I loved that game as a kid and just bought another one.
I must say, I originally bought mine because I wanted to start playing my older games again without having to actually replace all of my consoles. I was rather pleased. I did end up buying the tree consoles anyway aminly as collectors items, but, the retron 3 was a great buy :)
Do Super NES controllers work with regular NES games like the FC Twin, or do you need NES controllers specifically for the NES games?
You need specific controllers. The posts only work for their own console equivalent.
MAAAAAARK!!! WE MISS YOU, MAN!
Listening to Mark is soothing, like I'm hanging out with my older brothers back in the day when I would watch them play video games. Mark, I live in Erie, PA, 2 hours from Pittsburgh. I think my wife and I should come over and form a good relationship with you guys. I'll wax all your arcade cabinets, clean all the stickers off your used games, and run my hands over all of the amazing game hardware you own. I won't give you any of my own stuff, though- that's bullshit dude.
I got this for my boyfriend for Christmas, I can't wait to see his face when he opens it!!!
Your opening statement reminded me of an Iron Maiden song from their Piece of Mind album.
GETTING ONE OF THESE FOR MY BIRTHDAY!!!
Good humor, good review.
I just got mine yesterday. It's pretty nifty! The Genesis S-video output looks awesome on my HDTV. And yes, the Genesis version of Virtua Racing does not work with this console. Now I have to get some Mega Drive games, NES, SNES, and Super Famicom games for it. BTW the O/J switch on the back is the Genesis/Mega Drive region switch so you can play Japanese Mega Drive games on it. My Genesis 6-Pak game will not work in Japanese mode because it is region-locked.
nothing beats the feel of pushing the nes power button ,and the bowling ball logo on snes games was killer |:}
Definately a collector's must have , for bringing back the good old games we used to love when the NES was the one console dominating the market at the time .... lol :)
Have to get one of these.
Bro i dont know why i Love so much classic consoles
GREAT VID!!!!!!! informative and very funny!!!.....especially to an old school gamer.
I don't know why, but I laughed really hard when you said "gasp" as 1:20
they are also very durable I've acedentally pulled mine off my shelf and still works fine
I have one of these! They are awesome!
This is probably one of marks funniest reviews
I own Airwolf! Haha, flashbacks came after I saw that cartridge.
you should do those teleshopping commercial things, you just promote things so funny xD
This is awesome console for game collectors. Now we need a similar SEGA console, which plays Master System, Genesis/Megadrive & 32X games. That would be awesome present for SEGA fans.
Hello! The Everdrive MD China Version for Genesis will work in the retron 3? Thanks in advance. Grettings from Paraguay!
Are these any good contemplating getting one also do they play Pal games or NTSC only
I'm thinking about getting one of these for college when I leave for main campus. I hope it's a good idea!
i love old games because i didnt get to play much as a kid and i wanna see what i missed out on thank you for letting me know this before i wasted a shitload of money on all 3 of these :D
man it brings Back memories
The last 30 seconds cracked me up. I thought I'd see you put a neo geo cartridge on there.
There is a local retro game store near UNCC (I live in concord) that uses one of these for people to check out some games. its pretty awesome and just like the original console game play
There were so many of these! Its like they were the most bootleg'd electronic product ever! U would see them being sold at stands in the 'middle of the mall' and it finally got to a point where you didnt even need the console with the game slots. They finally came out with one that was just hooked up to the TV and it had a bunch of games built IN TO it, do you guys remember that?
@MrDavidtron7 I don't know. I don't think so since it comes with it's own controllers. It comes with it's own NES light gun, but I think it only works with the NES.
@locutus94 That is pretty much what I did. I have had my Retron 3 for about a year now. Since then my console collection has grown quite a bit. I use my Retron 3 to play the games and leave the original systems unused and on shelves as collector's items.
"Ultraman: Towards the Future" - that's an underrated fighting game.
You have review both FC twin consoles and RetroN consoles between the two which do you believe is better and longer lasting in quality of working.
Can someone tell me about the controllers.can you use nes on this or any retrons ? Hows the retron 1-5. Are all good..
Gettin this for my b-day!
@Coldhumor. You have to plug in the av cables ONLY!!! The s-video cable only works for snes, and sega! Hope that helped man.
But really, the sense of humor on display in these reviews is perfect. I especially like the references to Truxton and Thexder. Ha ha ha. Christ.
Your genius! 6 game systems at the same time?! Woooohhhooooooo
1:21 that nes was just as surprised as me! :O
never heard of or seen this thing. I learned something new:)
who asked
I'm thinking of getting this sometime since retron 5 has too much problems and being emulator. This here you just play games like normal. At least it's nice to see you can use the actual controllers.
I am going to hopefully get one soon
yes also still used the game genie for each one nes snes gensis
Now that it is 4 years after this video was uploaded, does the clone console hold up over time?
I own Retron 3 & like the system. One of the best parts is it can play the Mega Drive & Super Famicom games from Japan & Europe without an adapter. Even better, I bought some of the pirated knock off games like Top Fighter 2000 & Death Calibur & they work too.
who asked
@@ZechTecShorts It doesn't matter who asked. All you need to know is that I'm telling you.
Big Bossman you’re a literal legend for replying.
Cool, in 20 years we have another Retron 3! Wii, XBox and PS3! :D
Don't know if this is has already been asked but,is TMNT 3 Manhattan Project compatible with the Retron 3? I've seen a list of a few games that aren't compatible with it but, just thought I'd ask someone who has this.
Does this thing support pal games, and does it work on a pal tv? Is there a pal version of this?
Do each of the 3 ports operate with Game Genie adapters?
I just got one in the mail today. It works great. I read that it would not play Mario RPG but it does.
I need to know whats the music from 1:48 i heard it on a tae-bo dvd so i'm really curious about it.
can you use the controllers that come with it for all 3 game types???
i have been hearing and seeing that the red version of this keeps lagging out. The controllers would break easier and the video and sound would please reply cause i want to know if that is true
I so want to import one of these, NTSC SNES, SFC, NTSC NES (at the proper speed...) and Genesis, seems perfect for PAL collectors!
I want one so bad but I may wait for the retron 5.. balls, ill just get this one and give it away to get my retorn 5 later!
Great video..
I hope Mark will check out the Retron 5, when it comes out.
