  • At long last, I have finished the $10,000 Bankroll Challenge. Let's take a look back at this 2-year journey, recount the many high and low points, take away some lessons on how to build a bankroll at these stakes, and decide where I'm going from here.

Sounds believable. I hope you at least stayed at Fox Manor. It's the 'in' place to stay when you're headed for bankruptcy. Hey!, how is it down there since they reopened those two megas on the north end? Dying to go and check it out again but my local dive keeps tempting me with crazy offers.

If that is not for you then I hope the best; because when people have good values, and understanding of motivations of others (combined with a good heart) you will go very far in anything that you want to do.

doug, I am 18 years old and have been playing poker for some time now. i decided to take a shot at playing poker except i wanted to do it without using a single cent of my own money. I started at $0 about a month ago in the mist of the drama of your bankroll challenge and now have an account balance of $74.13. The fact that you turned tat $100 into 10 grand shows that its still possible for someone who is really dedicated to have an edge in the game. Thanks for all you did for poker doug the community will miss you.

Great vid. For all the people out there who think about career in poker - that's a lot to think about. If it took even such a great player like Doug 58 days straight to make 10k (with days off it would be like 80 or something) - it's around 45k a year - pretty mediocre income to say the least, imagine how hard it will be for an average winning player or even more for a complete beginner! Not even talking about downstreaks, about field getting better and better, and much more. You will be much better off doing something else.

I love Doug and the bankroll challenge and watched a lot of the live streams. He got me excited to take some time away from my business to play again to see if it was actually possible to run up a roll on WSOP.com. I love poker in general, but have taken a lot of time off in general to focus on my business. Let me share you my experiences so that it can help a lot of players out there. I would say that it's a lot harder than it looks as a lot of the players on WSOP are conservative on average and not going to punt away a buy-in that easily in a .10/.20 or .25/.50 game. In the 9-ring seems to be a lot easier to wait for hands, but everyone seems to be doing that as well so you run into a lot of cooler situations KK vs AA and the opponents immediately go all in on you after you 3-bet. It also makes it difficult to play AK because you end up a lot of the times up against hands that have you beat or slow played set on the flop after you hit your hand. If your opponents are willing to call any of your bets majority of the time you seem to be beat unless you have notes on them that they are speculative. Now I took a lot of notes on everyone and there are a lot of regs that I see everyday in and out. I do admire people who stick it out to play day after day, but not fun to play against them. Now occasionally there would be players who are making weird plays and ready to punt off a buy-in at less than 100bbs and I took notes of those players as well and always searched for them when I logged into the site several times a day. Those players don't last very long. In the 6-max at .25/.50 the players are fairly aggressive again and there are a lot of regulars that I see day after day on a lot of tables, but it seemed like a fair amount of times they did have it when I got 3-bet and I tried to bluff catch or 4-bet or get it in with AK so had to be more selective in these spots. I went through a lot of buy-ins trying to play against this player pool and I did run it up one time to almost go back to even, but then just more tough hands and tough spots to get back on a down streak. At times I like Doug's analysis and playing style and going with a theory based approach, but I find the opponents I'm up against aren't balanced or tend to be on the tighter side the majority of the time so the bluff catching frequency or trying to bluff them off their hand seems like a losing proposition. I tried going with Doug's more balanced approach and that did work for a bit, but reverted back to a player based approach of fit or fold against players who are just generally tighter and also going back to game selection to find games with at least 1 action player to go up against vs an entire table of very tough and competent players. I'm more of a live player and have over 10K hours in live play and so I do have an easier time sizing up my opponents when I can see them. For me its tougher to play in these micro stakes since I'm used to playing for bigger buy-ins against more speculative players and for me it can be easy to go with a hand or situation for $20 or $50 a buy-in, but they do end up adding up, but these are just excuses vs really trying to beat these games against tougher opponents. I don't want to discourage anyone from trying their own bankroll challenge, but I do agree that you have to want it and work harder than anyone else on the site as your opponents are tougher in general and put up with a lot of ridiculous and crazy situations. But what I do like is Doug does have a plan to battle his opponents and I'm sure his upswing labs has a lot of theory and techniques to beat these games, but I think you definitely need to put in tons of hours to get through the variance and the coolers to get to the good spots. I wish I could see more of Doug's online sessions and I have looked both on twitch and on youtube, but he didn't record all of his sessions. I'm sure I will get a lot of criticism, but I'd like to hear what other players experiences and opinions are on the site and building up a bankroll in general.

I play microstakes and pretty much just pay the bills while my wife is pregnant. She makes more money than me. What you are saying is 100% true, but I am one of those players who puts in the work and I am a pretty consistent winner...I suffer through variance too but I dont play beyond my means and during a downswing im able to re-adjust and play smaller and for more hours to make back money that I have lost. It def is a struggle but I am managing. Thanks for the insight.

I tend to have similar issues at low/microstakes and have two pieces of advice.
      1) If your opponents aren't bluffing enough, you can exploitatively overfold.
      2) Even if you don't change your calling frequency in these spots, you should be able to more than make up for it in other areas. If opponents are only getting stacks in/raising with nutted hands, when they show weakness you can bluff them more and value bet them somewhat lighter.
