It's sad because he realizes it was all for nothing because he will die there and Ed will just keep the money. At least Ed didn't lie. This is why Walt tries to mail some to Lewis and then turns himself in once Walt Jr. tells him to just die.

Even if Ed said yes to giving Walt's family the money and Walt didn't believe him, Ed is still a better bet than Gretchen and Elliott, who would never do it. Ed is an honest, honorable guy. Walt should have given Ed a big commission to deliver the money, called his family from a throwaway cell to say goodbye and tell them the money's coming, give them Ed's contact info, then die in the cabin and give more money to Ed to dispose of the body in the woods. Sky would take the money -- What choice would she have? -- she really never cared that it was drug money, she didn't mind using it for Hanks PT or Ted's tax debt. This way no one ever finds Walt so they can't go after Sky. Only downside is Walt doesn't get to kill the Nazis and Lydia but that was a bonus not the real aim. As for saving Jesse, he really screwed Walt, ratted him out, leading to Hank's demise, so to hell with Jesse.

I feel so similarly. This version of Walt is like a combination of Walter White and Heisenberg laid bare; practically a ghost at this point, embodying the repercussions of all his choices. That's why the ending of the show is so good to me, Walt's journey comes full circle, and he ends on one of the most changed and interesting notes a character can leave on, while also never feeling alienating from the character we've seen him to be.

Do you know why they call Breaking Bad one of the greatest TV shows OF ALL TIME?
The acting, the cinematography, the directing, etc. is all on point. Everything is just perfect, but one thing is far greater then the rest here.
      The writing...
The writing for this show is beyond a level that we may never see again.
Everything that you hear on the show was written for a reason. Do you honestly think the writers, specifically Vince Gilligan, decided to put this scene in with Walt and Ed playing cards just to show that Walt is depressed?
      It's a metaphor...
Poker is a game of gambling, which Walt feels he's lost. He gambled on not having the DEA figure out he was Heisenberg, of continuing his drug empire, of making even more millions of dollars.
And everything went down the drain.
He has a nationwide manhunt on him, his family despises him, his brother-in-law has been murdered and his partner is being held captive by a bunch of Nazi's.
So, Walt is stuck in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, unable to ever leave again, unable to see or talk to his family again, playing a useless game of cards for $10,000 an hour.
The last few episodes, more than any other in this series, were absolutely vital to finishing Walt's story. Nothing was left to chance or just mere dialogue filler.
Everything has a meaning in what you hear.
Walt's lost everything in his gamble to keep the life's he had, and just as Spicy Pickle says, he's playing the cards he's being dealt because that's all he's able to do from here on.

I cried like a baby the first time I saw this, and I’ve just teared up again. I can’t rewatch the lead up to the finale anymore because it hits too hard. Cranstons portrayal of that child-like desperation we had after our parents left us for the first time is heartbreaking.
My Dad and Uncle both went through Chemo from 2017-2018. Both in remission, luckily, but I was with them throughout it all. That pained look on Walt’s face I saw in my own fathers eyes. From the minute I knew he had it, til the moment he rang the bell. The saddest part was that there was nothing I could do to ease that pain for him. Not only that but the pain my mum was going through and god-forbid, my own. I feel so lucky day after day that I don’t see that in his face anymore and hope never to again.
My uncle is a different cat, tough and humourous as they come. He never let you know it hurt, but you could tell it did. My mums stem-cells have given him new life, and for her and him we are incredibly grateful.
