The amazing thing about the alpha is that without this external camera angle and the excess information we have in this game, your second torp would've likely missed. Impressive that this boat used as an interceptor as intended could still prove a match in 1984. He also didn't torp down the range for some reason and it doesn't get the latest USSR torps which negate its impact a bit (and there really isn't wake homing in cold waters. It is still an amazing and beautiful simulator.
So am I, It was nice to receive an offer from a company that not only did I agree with but I was already using. I've turned down so may sponsorship offers prior to this due to not liking the product.
"...they take marketing differently" Yeah well, not gonna argue, but the end goal is to take money from other people and put it into your own company. Uh... if that's 'different' for you, then... Well, can I have some of your money? Serious question. Just a little bit. I take marketing differently.
Following our successful ambush of the Soviet resupply ship and the Kirov task force she was tending we have received orders to intercept a Soviet Submarine force also harassing shipping in the region. Magz, I'm not sure if you have read my other comment, but the reason you kept breaking wires/cables on your torpedoes is that your angle of attack was greater than 60 degrees from the tube/bow. Check out fellow youtuber Jive Turkey's channel. He actually served on Los Angeles class subs, great source of info and very entertaining!
"your angle of attack was greater than 60 degrees from the tube/bow" - None of my cables broke on launch and the one that did brake was at less than 60* at all times leading up to the break so no, this had nothing to do with it. Since the torp was manoeuvring on the Alfa the point of cable break it was likely a direct result of the Mk.48's turn or the proximity to the Alfa disturbing the cable.
I meant the torpedoes in your previous videos, not specifically the Alfa torp. However, I believe the torp you shot at the Juliet was broken because of the angle. I agree that the first Alfa torp's wire broke most likely because of the proximity to the Alfa. Sorry for the confusion, should have been clearer.
If I remember correctly the Alfa was not only fast and manuverable. It also had a Titanium hull that enabled it to dive deeper than any contemporary submarine, Soviet or NATO. That made it an even more formidable foe.
well there was the K-278 which On 4 August 1984 K-278 reached a record submergence depth of 1,020 meters (3,350 feet) but only one was built conpaired to the afla's 400 meter tested depth so technically cause the tested it the K-278 could dive deeper Tho the Russian military says that the Alfa's crush depth was 1300 meters but they never went down that far so its not conclusive
The Alfa also had a weird reactor. In the book Hunt for Red October, Clancy goes for it having a pressurised water reactor, but actually it had a very hot reactor that used liquid lead for coolant; in a water reactor the water flows between the fuel rods and control rods, and that hot water is passed out of the reactor so that more cooler water can take its place, like a car radiator. A second loop of water is heated by that hot coolant, and this second loop provides steam for turbines, generators etc. The Alfa's liquid metal reactor meant it could be made smaller - lead is a better conductor of heat than water, and slows neutrons better too. This meant a small boat with lots of power, and one huge disadvantage: The Alfa's reactor had to be kept hot at all times, otherwise the lead would solidify and you've got a very expensive paperweight, so the boats in practice could never go far from patrol routes and ports, as they could only actually power down in places that had the facilities to keep the reactor warmed up.
I'd like to see that recored. The titanium was used t make the sub lighter, not to make it dive deeper really. The russians stated an operating depth of 450 meters. I think 1000m are too much.
@Duncan Cook - I've got older manuals where the estimated max depth was 900m for the Alpha - so the crush depth of 1300 is not that far fetched. With that being said though, I've also seen in subsequent books the max depth go down (or go up? heh, language) to 650 , 600 and then to 450meters. I'd still think that that stubby titanium hull was hard as all hell so diving below torps can be considered an option in that thing.
Titanium is light but it is not a legendary metal that is as strong as armor plates. I don't know how to explain it in english, I hope you understand what I wanted to say. I think it could dive deeper as the western subs but not 1000m. 600 seems realistic.
Finally! I've been waiting to see an Alfa or Sierra in one of these _Cold Waters_ videos. If memory serves, the Sierra was even more of a threat than the Alfa because of its sonar gear.
I've been waiting too, Like any game campaign I was expecting the hostiles to slowly start getting more and more advanced over time. It's a sign that the difficulty is ramping up.
Idk if this would help you Magz, but one tactic I use all the time against Alpha's is to try and sneak into the baffles of the sub. Get close to the same depth as it is. Then I fire my torpedo from the opposite tube away from the Alpha (Wire guided). Then instead of switching the torpedo to active, wait till it gains some ground right on the rear of the Alpha. Then switch the torp to 'Active'. From this tactic alone I can usually get a 95% kill rating on Alpha Class submarines. The reason I use this tactic in my campaigns is because as soon as the Alpha spots you or a inbound torpedo it get's up to 42 knot's and then becomes very agile. By sneaking up on the Alpha and then slamming on active pinging. The Alpha has very little reaction time to speed up or evade your torp. By then it's too late for them. :] Happy hunting!
Incredible video and the way you explain on these torpedoes and different types of moves too..I do greatly appreciate your. videos ...and depth of these too..Thank you so much...
MagZ, i would highly suggest getting Blind Man's Bluff off of audible, its extremely interesting and covers a great deal in US submarine development and doctrine in the cold war. Plus it covers a major issue with the Mk37, specifically the battery design in earlier models. Along with theorizing how the USS Scorpion may have been lost due to this.
The Alfa was a fully automatic/mechanical sub. There was no need for a crew. It could be operated by less than 10 persons (officers only in the control room) but they usually had a small crew anyway to make sure everything was working properly and also there had cooks.
aaah the Afla class.. i thought Victor 3 was bad enought but the Alfa class sure make you on the edge XD last time i fought one, that little bastard ambushed me by torping me 3 times in the engine room leaving me dead in the water, taking water and 8% life left. unfortunate for him, he had appared a 100 fot in front and 50 fot under me... me dead in the a water, sinking.... whit the bastard in front of me, basically i did a Kylo Ren there, fired every single think i had in the tubes at the Alfa, didnt care if it was a MOSS or Harpoon... EVERTHING was fired!. I head 7 torpedo hit, and i limped back to the base on reduced power, cursing that motherfucker .. XD
WOOW HOO!! You are the only one that I have set up to where it notifies me where you put out a new video!! You have a gift @MagzTv! Please keep them up! a BIGGGGGG thank you from the great state of Allen, TX, USA!!! KEEP IT UP MAGZ!!
have not played this game, but based on what i know, to ambush the alfa could you ogone above the thermal layer to lose contact, fire torps, then drop bellow to regain the connection to guide t hem in without them being heard?
Glad you kept the ad short and classy. Honestly hate that shit, but I get it. We all gotta make a buck. You aint puttin this content out for charity. Just please dont let it get out of control.
what you see is all I will be doing, a 10 to 12 second ad in this style at the start and a short piece at the end with an update on what ever new audio books I am listening too and recommend. I think it's a good deal, helps me and I consider Audible to be a fantastic service that has a lot of value to my audience as well. Meshes quite well with my style of videos.
Really enjoying these vids Magz, unfortunately my cat doesn't! Those loud ass Soviet active sonar pings freak him out when I watch late at night in a quiet house haha
I think that KFG had set the random probability of wire breakage on launch at 25%, later reducing it to 10%. You can go into the weapons txt file and revise this figure to something more reasonable. I made mine 5%(.05), something that I thought was probably closer to IRL performance. This probability of failure is in addition to the chance the wire would break as a function of sub speed or launch angle.
Mags Cold waters Love the channel. Question, when your speaking about "cable breakage on a Torpedo" after firing a Torpedo in a one on one scenario would it an advantage to go to flank speed on the sub to slightly extend the range of the wire or does that action cause it's own set of issues.
Activating active homing doesn't disable the Mk.48's passive sensors. It just uses both. With something as slippery as an Alfa I like to have my bases covered especially when I have the jump on it.
Torpedoes are almost always detected as soon as they leave the submarine by there launch transient and due to the fact that they cavitate at the speed they move are easy to detect. The only time a torpedo is hard to detect even on passive is if the target submarine is running at high speed (cavitating) and thus making so much noise on it's own that it limits it's own passive sonar or when the torpedo is fired while you are in the targets baffles Active sonar makes little to no difference to torpedo detection. Torpedoes are noisy, Several times more noisy than the Submarine that fired them which is why in game you will often see a torpedo just appear and you will be able to track it without issue while never seeing what launched it.
*has audible for a partnership....plays a game based on being as quite as possible* AH i see what you did there....but in all seriousness this is great I'm glad to see the sponsorship and hopefully you can get some more cash in the hand to live off after all these guys sponsored Jon Tron and have been really good with him....hope to see some more Cold waters soon!
Hey Magz, what difficulty do you have your game set to? Also in the In progress 1.06 patch notes it says that torps will no longer target destroyed subs on the bottom, do you agree with that?
Realistic at the moment, I wanted to turn it up to elite but I can't on a campaign in progress so I would need to start again. Honestly I am not sure I agree with that, A wreck is a big noisy pile of metal.A torp should lock it if it looses track of the real target and it is a good tactical play to try and use the wrecks as massive countermeasures. As annoying as it is when it happens to you I think I would rather have it stay.
Why the heck were you obsessing about launching the torpedo on the same level as the enemy ? You know you can just set the torpedo's level to deep right ? With that your own depth doesn't matter.
Listen to the video mate, Yes you can set the torps to run deep, you can even manually guide them down. But torps coming in on targets at high angles (above or below) are actually easier to out manoeuvre than those fired from a similar depth to target. Not so important when you are shooting at a typhoon that has the turning circle of an oil tanker but very important when you are trying to surprise an Alfa that can snap turn 90* in a few moments. I explained this already in the video while I was changing my depth.
I find the Alfa very easy to kill, it could be a nightmare, but the ai is just plain stupid sometimes. It's beena while since I encoutered an Alfa, maybe it got patched.
Not as huge as I would like, I have gaps in my knowledge base. The good part about doing Cold Waters is it's making me research those gaps to fill them in.

There is a great irony in a submarine video being sponsored by a company called "Audible."
lmao, 4 years late but lmao

ironic that jingles latest video features him combating a Romeo without a Juliet, while you face a Juliet without a Romeo...

Notification squad! I swear, these cold waters videos are like crack.
David Borgmeyer yes they are
Alfa be like: *ping* *ping* *FWOOOOSSHHHHHH*
I look forward to this most these days.

Magz launches torp at Juliet: Omai wa muo shinderu. Juliet starts pinging: Nani!
MagzTV Can you compare Cold Waters to Dangerous Waters I would be interested in your opinion.

Because, you know, submarines and all.
Really enjoying these vids Magz, unfortunately my cat doesn't! Those loud ass Soviet active sonar pings freak him out when I watch late at night in a quiet house haha
is the alpha the titanium sub that can dive really deep?
This series is fucking amazing.
All the data performance are base of western data and not the actual data of what alpha can do.
I dont know the game, why didn’t the Alpha shoot back?

great video :)
does the alfa get the cool ass rocket propelled torpedo they had IRL?
13:45 oh yes
dude just guide the damn torpedo!
"Alfa's" were fast - very fast! ...but sure as hell weren't "quiet"...
They were when they were moving slow.
9:00 passive homing against the alpha is usually better since it's so noisy.
Activating active homing doesn't disable the Mk.48's passive sensors. It just uses both. With something as slippery as an Alfa I like to have my bases covered especially when I have the jump on it.

Magz, ever consider getting the VLS mod for the 688 in CW? It adds the Flight II and III versions of the 688 with 12 VLS tubes. Pretty neat mod.
maybe after this campaign. My plan is to finish up the 1984 campaign, do a couple of videos with the soviet boat mod and then do the 1968 campaign.
I get an aweful deja vu from this game. Not a bad one but these are almost exactly the same missions as in Red Storm Rising.
Is it the Alfa class or the Alfr class?
Hey Magz, what difficulty do you have your game set to? Also in the In progress 1.06 patch notes it says that torps will no longer target destroyed subs on the bottom, do you agree with that?

Hey I am considering buying this game but I was wondering, can play as soviet submarines or even submarines from other countries?
Yes you can play soviet subs in camp and mission.
Would like to see a patch where you can play as the soviets
Its coming soonTM
I realize this is not a true sim, but manual control and visual guidance of Mk 48 really kills immersion
Why the heck were you obsessing about launching the torpedo on the same level as the enemy ? You know you can just set the torpedo's level to deep right ? With that your own depth doesn't matter.

It's beena while since I encoutered an Alfa, maybe it got patched.
Yeah I find that too. If the AI was smart, it would go down to 2000 feet and travel at 42 knots.
ok you have a huge knowledge about submarines?
Not as huge as I would like, I have gaps in my knowledge base. The good part about doing Cold Waters is it's making me research those gaps to fill them in.
Hmmmm I'm watching these game and In a first time I belive I have a real good deep simulation but... not. Have good grphic but poor realism. I will remain to DANGEROUS WATERS.
Can you play as the Soviets? nobody on YT has yet
JiveTurkey has a couple of videos up about that. You have to mod the game though.
Deleted my comments on the last two videos. Honestly Magz, thanks for the telling off.
Learning With Charlie lol what happened

How could this game be popular?! It has shitty graphics, callofduty-style gameplay (I wonder why they didn't add ram-attacks in emergency surfacing with ballistic missiles firing onto soviet planes), weak adversaries, one and a half types of submarines to use, no tactics, shitty campaign!
Good damn! I'm envyous! I could do that game with my poop and be rich! No one wants to play silent hunter or sub command. They are too comlicated. No, good to see that someone is happy with that, but it feels like a cheap game that was done by month.
