I too bought this album after hearing One Armed scissor, but now its just one of my favorite songs. I often want to listen Arcarsenal, but because all the songs are great, I listen to the whole album. This band still doesn't get the credit it deserves.
A Mars Volta fan who likes At The Drive-In?
Impossible.
I'm truly breaking new ground.
By the way, I do recommend you check out Slint's 1991 album, Spiderland. Another unique sound.
Not at all. Love both bands.
CunningCondor Why? Are they like enemies or something?
Toxik-Vermin they had pretty different styles, with The Mars Volta being punk tinged progressive Latin jazz fusion, but were headed by the same vocalist and guitarist (Cedric and Omar)
The same thing happened to me with my dad while on vacation lol. I was outside and Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus was playing, and he was instantly like, "What even is this noise?" And then when the slower jam part started, I could tell by his face that he was trying to find out what the time signature was. It was just so hilarious because for 5 minutes straight he had this really confused face. Then when the vocals came in, he finally figured it out and had the biggest smile I've ever seen on him. Then the song ended and I swear, for the next 3 hours, he was constantly humming the bassline from that part of the song. Glad I got my dad into The Mars Volta lol.
Like most people, I have heard of them through One Armed Scissor. Years later, I finally bought this album.
It was an amazing listen all the way through. Every song was magnificent.
Hey man, just wanted to say I found The Mars Volta because of you and I cannot stop listening to Frances the Mute. It's unbelievably good!
Nocturnal Ritual yeah same he also got me into Deaftones, New Radicals, APC, RATM, Metallica, Megadeth And Days Of the New
wonderful album, nothing has been made like it before or since
It's like seeing a UFO one time years ago but never again. Totally amazing record.
it's amazing how at the drive inn turned into the Mars Volta but damn both bands are that good!
the Tremulant EP that TMV did is an example of some ATDI residue.
17:36
I completely agree! One of the main reasons I love this album is because of how great the bass sounds, and it makes these songs so energetic
I was lucky enough to see them back in 2000. Amazing, amazing band.
That scream at the end of Invalid Litter Dept. gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Every. Time.
This album is awesome 👌
Invalid litter dept. is a work of art
SohoZiff it ok
I get chills every time it starts
It's just spoken word over what sounds like run of the mill emo/post-hardcore and annoying singing vocals in my opinion. I understand why others would like it though
Im so glad you pointed out the scream in Invalid Litter Depo. Every single time i listen to it it gives me chills.
I feel like Adam Lazarra from TBS got his stage presence from this band. Slinging the mic around like crazy on stage.
In some doc or interview they said Adam got to enter TBS cause he was able to sing ATDI songs.
Some guy at a party gave this album to my best friend. I guess his band opened for them or something blah blah blah. My friend didn’t really like it but said I might so he gave it to me. I loved it at first listen. RATM and Sublime were pretty much all I listened to at the time (besides punk o Rama’s 😂 ). This album fit right in for me. Best part is I got my favorite album for free!
Arcarsenal is the kind of song that makes my pupils dilate, but the rest is just as insane. And then there are all the other projects that have been spawned by these incredibely daring and talented musicians. I very much appreciated falling into this rabbit hole.
So in conclusion, if you have an afro and make rock music, then chances are you're gonna be an awesome rock band examples being the following: The Mars Volta At The Drive-In, RATM, etc.
MC5, Jimi Hendrix, Thin Lizzy. The list goes on.
Coheed and cambria
Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips
Funny, I always thought Cedric and Zach had a very similar voice
Don't forget BOSTON! lol
The best way I can describe their music is that it's the soundtrack to space mixed with hard drugs.
But what if I listened to this at a _Drive-Thru?_
Matthew Cool Well, if it's Sonic's then everyone is gonna have a FUCKING BLAST!!!
just don't get trapped there
@@hellonurd8957 hahahahhaha
Then you are dumb.
What about a drive-in movie theater on Mars?
Quarantined is a perfect song. Definitely in my top ten of all time favorite songs.
Also for the record, just throwing it out there. I love it when you talk a something positive that you enjoy. You should do it more often!
Haha I agree, but RTP videos get more views. Hopefully stuff like this will catch up maybe. Or one of my videos goes viral and then all my stuff is evenly watched and I do this stuff full time.
While I'm dreaming, I also wish to lose 10lbs and to be able to fly.
Oh great, another band with an excellent discography I can get into.
I'm glad he mentioned the scream in Invalid Litter Dept. To this day, when I listen to this song after a long period of time (at least a month) it gives me goose bumps. Loses the effect if I listen to it too often though, but damn do I love the feeling it gives me. Plus what the song is about is awesome.
What an interesting band.
Asuna Yuuki Their contribution to the music scene is spectacular. & I have extremely high hopes for Interalia. Relationship Of Command is one of the albums I can listen to w/o skipping a single track.
I'd put these guys up there with Quicksand, Queens Of The Stone Age, and Melvins as some of the most influential and kickass artists of all time.
@@YouCanCallMeXoe Great collection of influential artists!
Wow....I like it I'm 40 and never heard this before! 👊👍
AUGGHHHHHH!!!
Oh hai, meme.
You're Tearing Me Apart, Lisa !! I could not go on without you.
I did not hit her, I did not, oh, hai Mark
I'm so happy to have you as my best friend, and I love your videos so much.
Anyway how is your sex life?
I love this series I wish you would do more of these
Saw your community post Luke,
I’m hear to say thanks for getting into At The Drive In, and that this was a great video.
THIS STATION IS NON-OPERATIONAL
On the album I bought, there was an extra track called Catacombs
Have you ever checked out The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused? It's an album that reminds me a lot of RAC in that it's a punk masterpiece released right before a band's split and went on to become stupidly influential
I've heard of the name but can't say I recognize any of their stuff. I'll check it out.
They never got the mainstream attention At the Drive In got but it's certainly in the same vein, they even reformed a few years ago and released a great comeback album. The lyrics are more straight forward than At the Drive In's but Refused are from Sweden so it's kind of to be expected from a singer not writing in their native tongue
So glad I saw them in 2016, that show stole shaky knees. I fucking adore this band
Napolean solo is my fav song of theirs, So much emotion
Agreed; definitely their masterpiece
I found your channel a few weeks ago. This video pushed me over the edge, I had to sub!! RoC is one of my top 5 for sure!
I've had name recognition of atdi for a while, but this vid has convinced me to listen to it, although I'm not sure I'll love it as passionately
i’ve recently become obsessed with this album it just scratches the right itch in my brain
I thank you man, i just brought this album after you talking about, also some others, thank you for your insight and intelligence in Rock and Roll
Wow I really liked this review of the album. Now I know that I need to listen to it. Thank you very much for this review. Looking up for the next RTP. Have a nice day, Luke.
Man, you've done a few favorites reviews for some of my favorite albums and you're from St. Louis. I feel like you're speaking exactly for me! Great review, please keep it up.
This is a really solid review
Great video man, cheers!
Great video, great analysis of each track and the album as a whole. While I have not really listened to it in a number of years, I remembered every song so vividly that it felt like I had just listened to the whole thing yesterday. That just goes to show how incredibly memorable their sound and creativity really are, even after all this time. If I had to compare them to another band, I'd maybe say Fugazi? You might want to check them out if you haven't already since you may enjoy them regardless.
Here's something (I think) to help you define ATD: Rage Against The Machine + My Chemical Romance (and a little bit of Frank Zappa) = this band. also awesome review man!; I love these guys :^)
I was thinking of rage and Thursday. Your take is great too.
Never heard of them before I watched this video, but I really like this
Check them out they won’t disappoint
I went 3 years at BYU without hearing another soul listen to anything other than top-40 or rap. Wait, one time I did hear someone listening to TOOL, but it turned out to be my brother pulling up to my apartment in his car. If only you had been my neighbor and played the last 3 songs on repeat for a month -- I may have actually met someone in Provo that I liked, haha.
There was an irish band influenced by at the drive in, they named themselves after what a friend of their's thought after hearing Arcarsenal, the irish band was called Jetplane Landing!
I was listening to enfilade on my sony cd player when i was in high school, during class. Full blast, and the part where cedric uses that melodica instrument during the break was going crazy and the class had gone silent without me realizing it, and everyone was like wtf is he listening too. Everyone was staring, I felt a little ackward, but one of my buddies that knew ATD-i was like hell yeaaaaaaaaaa and I felt a little bit better about it haha
I first remember hearing One Armed Scissor from Guitar Hero: World Tour when I was younger and the song definitely blew me away, such a badass song, man, and I remember always going back to it
and thank you rocked review because of your review of one of your favorite album the Mars Volta Frances the mute introduce me to them so had to check them out and wow blown me away. and also check out at the drive inn because of Wikipedia and now a fan of both bands! so again thank you!
There are a bunch of emo bands from 90’s you should listen to to understand what these guys style is. Atdi were an emo band who went very post hardcore on this album. To the people that donno think they were emo, just listen to “Napoleon Solo” and “Lopsided” then we can talk
Also a lot of stuff from acrobatic tenement
Great review sir ! I had forgotten how good was Cosmonaut...
Regarding the emo reference, Fugazi had a big influence on them (and Minor Threat too, by extend) so there you go. What was great about ATDI was all the electronica, avant garde sounds and percussions that were layered all over their post hardcore sound. When you listen to the Mars Volta, it's pretty obvious what was on Omar's mind all along. Anyway, thanks man, now I have to listen to this bloody album for the rest of the week !
You really just turned me on to this band, these guys are awesome
One of the best albums of the last 20 years. In my top 10. Nice review! Bewareeee! :D
It's really no wonder that when this band broke up, everyone involved just went on to equally great things, is it? I mean, Sparta and Mars Volta....it's like how when Green River split, the members went on to form form Mother Love Bone/Pearl Jam and Mudhoney.
In fact, that might be a good way to describe At the Drive-In. They're our generation's Green River
I can't wait for your review of the new one
Amazing album. All their stuff is worth listening too
I first got into the Mars Volta and then found out about ATDI. First song I heard was Rascuache and I loved it right away.
I got into the mars volta first, feel like this helped me have an idea of the tones and vibe of the album
I hope you do a classic band like queen or led zeppelin for one of these but I do love these favorite album videos because it recommends me good albums
I definitely have a few like that and it'll come sooner or later.
I would love for you to cover a night at the Opera the jazz album or any of the many amazing queen albums since there my all time favorite band
When i was younger than 5 my dad put on this album in the car. I used to like it because i thought it was some of the heaviest music ever. I now obviously kno what it isnt. But when i look back at my memories i remember it being alot louder. Anyway about 5 years ago i put the album on my ipod and i would only listen to my whole extensive music on shuffle. After being impressed by one of their songs i decided to listen to the full album. After first time it was ok but verytime i listened to it i realised how epic it is. Anyway 5 years later and i still listen to it. And i plan to show it to my future children.
When I was like 10 years old I was totally spooked away from Deloused because it was one of the heaviest things I had heard. Like how I thought Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria was THE HEAVIEST SHIZ
A band mixing up different genres to make a unique kind of sound?
Sounds pretty interesting, and something I would do.
Mio Akiyama more bands should do that IMO
Mio Akiyama i wonder what HTT would sound like if they tried at the drive in’s style
That's what most great artists do. It's a secret... Shhhh
Maybe try doing something in the style of these guys or covering one of their songs, I'm sure HTT can some up with something cool
Maybe try doing something in the style of these guys or covering one of their songs, I'm sure HTT can some up with something cool
wishing well wishing well wishing weeeeellll .....
I think it was the song "Non-Zero Possibility" that made my buy the album.
I heard One Armed Scissor and Rolodex Propaganda before and I thought they were pretty amazing (One Armed Scissor at Jool Holland's performance). As a Massive Mars Volta fan, I can see a lot of those influences in this album.I actually like to think the Trembulant EP is a natural progression from this album.
(Trembulant seems to be a continuation of ATDI's Vaya EP).
I just love both bands to be honest, they haven't released a bad album in my opinion.
Quite like this album, great review.
Also wondered what you think of Temple of the Dog, I recently came across it again and cant get enough of it. Soundgarden and pearl jam, a proper band ;)
This album was my gateway into post-hardcore (now my fav genre) and any genre with screaming. Top 10 favorite album for sure, probably top 5. Arcarsenal blew my mind and is still my second favorite, but Invalid Litter Dept. will always be my favorite ATDI song. Cedric's screams are visceral and haunting and the lyrics/music video are so depressing, it truly is a powerful song in every sense of the word.
Mannequin Republic, Enfilade, and Cosmonaut are also killer tracks
Maaaan, you forget of catacombs!! amazing channel
Catacombs isn’t on the album that’s a bonus track they put on there on one of the rereleases of the record
Cosmonaut is my favourite track that chorus is so unique...
21:30
You know something? I HAVE always wondered what Relationship of Command would sound like if it had In/Casino/Out's or Vaya's production values.
Also, I don't know if I'm in the minority here, but does anyone else here think At The Drive In's pre-Vaya catalogue is grossly underrated?
I know that their claim to fame is their bonkers, experimental approach to punk and don't get me wrong here, that's where they shine best... but the stuff from before they got all proggy when they had a more traditional 90s emo/post-hardcore approach was really solid too. Acrobatic Tenament had a lo-fi charm to it and even had a track like "Schaffino" on it that almost sounds like it should have 60s surfing contest footage for its music video.
And seriously, El Gran Orgo is the most underrated 90s emo style EP EVER!
If it had been a full length album and if its release hadn't been such a mess (look it up if you're curious), I guarantee that it would have been a classic.
I love the shit out of this album and have since I was 13, so this episode makes me really happy. Back then I never really appreciated how unique ATDI sound was, but it had a huge impact on my taste.
Nice work man! Incredible album.. I think Omar can be a bit full of himself at times but I can see where he's coming from it being maybe a bit too polished.
Polished my ass. The album sounds raw and pretty dirty in parts. I often have trouble learning certain parts on guitar because the production is muddy in places.
I first heard ATDI back in 2000. Matter of fact it was "Arcarsenal" and it was on the Blair Witch 2 soundtrack.
Btw what's your opinion on the shape of punk to come by refused?
I may have been late to it but Shape Of Punk To Come was an excellent album that showed lots of experimentation & ambition (more so than any record of it's time if I'm being honest) & Freedom was a fantastic comeback record!
Glassjaw rocks too
Homie should check out fugazi
Yeah I wish there were more fellow Mormons who shared my love for rock music (though I have a few Mormon friends who are very passionate about rock and metal music). I go to BYU-Idaho, which is more or less just as strict as BYU Provo. It's a smaller school and feels more community based, so I like that aspect of it.
Anyway, I enjoyed your review as always. I've never heard of this band, so I'll have to check 'em out sometime. My music library is ever expanding!
Just discovered my favourite track is actually a bonus track... but Catacombs is amazing
Ladies and gentlemen, i found a new favorite band.
I feel like I intruded upon an ancient tomb and released a forbidden curse and the world is now all post-apocalyptic, and it is all my fault. ..when I listen to Relationship of Command.
Trail of Dead's Madonna album and Source Tags & Codes made me feel that way too
I and my dad f@#kin love white pony and when elite comes on we go nuts but he can't stand listening to elimination by overkill
also, he doesn't mind scream bloody gore but overkill and early A7X (waking the fallen era) is off limits
"Pattern against user" is such a school song.
A perfect album
Okay.. glad you reviewed this, one of my faves although, I'd rate Vaya a bit above it.. They Slew the entire rock genre with it and while Cedric/Omar did well with TMV they never came close to ATDI for the intensity
one of my favourite bands while not my favourite release by them (my favourite is vaya) definitely Is a stone cold classic and deserves to be listened to anybody into any form of punk. Glad they are back together and I'm really enjoying the new songs.
You sir have good taste
Best album of all time, not a bad moment on it
I've never tried At the Drive In before because the post-hardcore label turn me off. I really became a fan of their drummer through Gone is Gone song I'm finally trying them. What I've heard is not bad.
Do Trail of Dead's Source Tags & Codes!
Listening to Quarantined in 2020 is fun
I'm not gonna lie, they're an amazing band, my favourite. However all of there albums are growers not showers, you need to listen to them about three times before you get them.
I listened to Relationship Of Command once and loved it right off the bat
Sounds like The Mars Volta + Rise Against
Its great watching a video where you talk about an album your passionate about. You should do it more often. Sadly, the people would rather watch you suffer through nickelback and kid rock. Just know that there are some us that suffer with you. Some us just listened to the same CDs over and over until they moved out of their Mom's place and upgraded from dial-up.
Ransu X I like both styles
Nice.... what a fucking awesome album...
What is your opinion on TDBY by Limp Bizkit?
19:45 - I'm a Mormon and I love ATDI. Absolutely agree with what you're saying though. Even in here in the UK the majority of Mormons still have the same terrible taste in music, movies, books, art, food, basically anything that it's possible to have a passion for.
People don't understand the horrors that is the music at an LDS dance.
Yep! Although my brother offered to DJ at one once for free and managed to clear the room quite quickly and a lot of people complained. He didn't even play anything that extreme- it just wasn't to the majorities taste. He should have put on some gangster rap. (He did squeeze in a sample of the Maylene and the Sons of Disaster song Memories of the Grove over something though). I also went to one in Norway where one of my pals was in charge and played a Clutch song but they were cool with it because Norwegians are generally pretty awesome.
Lately I've been listening to a lot of this kind of stuff, I find post-hardcore to be a genre with a ton of different sounding stuff. I can listen to ATDI and hear something drastically different from The Blood Brothers (who I also fucking love), even though both are in the same genre.
There's a lot of unique hardcore subgenres that are hard to described, the blood brothers described as sass hardcore or white-belt hardcore
They do sound a lot like Fugazi though, with a sign of what's about to come with Mars Volta. Best way to describe them would be something like : Fugazi with Gerard Way as a singer, with just a bit more stamina than Gerard. It really is a tie between Cedric and Gerard who goes more over the top with vocals. By the way, if you were wondering what this album would sound like if left unpolished and rough : In/Casino/Out is the answer. These albums sound so incredibly alike, that when I played one after another, I couldn't tell the difference apart from a few songs, and there lies my main issue with these guys : all of their projects sound similar. Antemasque songs are interchangeable with this and some of Mars Volta stuff too. And that's the only downside of these guys : If they would strip away all the sonic chaos that's floating through your ears and slow things down, no one would care any more about them. But I'm still grateful for them because without this album, there would be no Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, and probably no MCR at all. Anyway, keep up the good work, and good luck. We all want to see a RTP for Chinese Democracy, there's gonna be some pretty hard debate over that.
The RTP for Chinese Democracy is close to meeting it's goal. For better or worse, it definitely is a strong piece of rock history.
Well, it kind of is. Shitload of money spent, fans left waiting for 13 years, non-consistent line-up with some questionable replacements, and what have we got? Good but outdated album(though I'll fight anyone who says that Sorry or Better aren't great songs, but the album doesn't feature enough Buckethead). Also, here are some other recommendations, if you want to add some of these for patreon goals :
In Through The Out Door (more in a "people don't or didn't like it even though it's good" way, I think that also counts as a RTP)
Tatoo You (not their worst but this was the first that came to mind, Goat's Soup also)
Lick it Up (or even Hot in the Shade, though they didn't actually sell that much, but still sucked)
Be Here Now (now this is a good example of regret)
Hysteria(if you want to get controversial, shit production, formulaic as hell, but then any late 80s hair metal is appropriate)
Metallica(it sold 30 million copies even though it's not that great, some songs sound a bit formulaic)
Third Maroon 5 effort (turned from a solid pop-rock-funk-jazz band to bland pop one here)
Any post-Mob Rules Sabbath.
I personally love Chinese Democracy, though it'll be interesting to hear what you have to say about it.
MrM2J3 the best way to describe them is if tool and fugazi made a supergroup and got Gerad Way as the singer
A local record store has Relationship of Command on vinyl for $30 but I couldn't afford it because Record Store Day
Dang that pricey. Maybe it was a newer reissue.
They mostly sound like Drive like Jehu. They took a lot from that band. Love ATDI
Fugazi as well
@@roflol65 And RATM
@@roflol65 I remember an interview with them where they listed Fugazi and Sunny Day Real Estate as their biggest influences.
Is it true that this and diary by sunny day real estate sync up?
ATF on any tool album?
invalid litter dept. is by far my most favorite song on the entire album
If you're looking for a name for their sound, its post hardcore
wow I figured he wouldn't do another one of these all-time favorite album videos
I have more favorites to come!
well you haven't done one in so long and I figured maybe he's done
How can you not mention the bass intro on quarantined?
