Green Day is an American rock band formed in 1986 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. For much of the band's career, they have been a trio with drummer Tré Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990 prior to the recording of the band's second studio album, Kerplunk (1991).
Dookie is the third studio album by American rock band Green Day, released on February 1, 1994 by Reprise Records. The band's first collaboration with producer Rob Cavallo, it was recorded in late 1993 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. Written mostly by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, the album is mostly based around his personal experiences, with themes such as boredom, anxiety, relationships, and sexuality. Musically, Dookie was influenced by several bands, notably, the Sex Pistols and Black Sabbath. The album was promoted with five singles: "Longview", "Basket Case", a re-recorded version of "Welcome to Paradise", "When I Come Around", and the radio-only "She". #GreenDay #Dookie #Rocked

Do you love Dookie?
Who doesn’t, really? Personally, it’s the album that got me into Green Day. I bought it at a flea market because I thought the cover looked cool.
Yes. One of the album that got me into alternative music, the others being "Does This Look Infected?" by Sum 41, "The War On Errorism" by NOFX, and "Open Your Eyes" by Goldfinger.
Rocked I love it. Got it on cd❤️
@@Karmy. I love Nimrod, it's so close to being my favorite, but Good Riddance kind of stains it. Billie Joe songs super off key, and the song really isn't good. Because of that, American Idiot still comes on top
Who doesn't?
Green Day you say?
I have entered the chat
ARTV I knew you would 😉
Now we wait for Crash.
We need Crash to join us!!!!
I wasn't alive when this album came out (I was born much later), but I'm a sucker for throwback albums in the rock genre.
Green Day is no exception. And while I might be late in the game, Dookie will always hold a special place in my mind and heart.
Green Day is great throwback materiel, and Dookie is no exception. While American Idiot is my personal favorite, Dookie is a close second.
Green Day is what got me into punk rock.
Nico Yazawa same

Same
I remember Dookie, and I liked it. It's what got me into Green Day in general.
Same. I loved it didnt have a parental advisory and I could buy it at Graywhale without my parents asking questions.
Pretty ironic title, given how awesome the album actually is.
from what i've heard, during the album's creation, the band was on tour. all three members had diarrhea from eating the tour bus food, and they originally wanted to name the album "liguid dookie" because of it.
Interesting story.
Capt. Murasa I feel I can believe that knowing how they were back in the day
I really like Dookie, and you're right, Dookie is fun to play with.
I occasionally play along to many GD songs with my bass.
Oh hey, Green Day. I remember them and Dookie was one big earworm.
Dookie is one of my all time favorites, too.
Hooray, Dookie...
(Seriously, this was a great album)
Dookie was a great throwback album.
F.O.D. is one of the best album closers EVER!!!
Shaggymatt92 Jacobs what about the secret song “All by myself” I mean I do agree F.O.D. is an AMAZING SONG
Dookie - one of the best pop punk albums ever. Great songwriting in all its simplicity!
While I think Nimrod and American Idiot are superior, I have so much respect for Dookie
I agree with American Idiot, but half of Nimrod's tracks sound too similar to me. Some of the other songs are career highlights don't get me wrong.
Nimrod is BEAUTIFUL. That album shocked me with how good it is.
@@thisisawsome34253212 I feel the same way about Insomniac in terms of tracks being too similar.
@@marcen12 Agreed, but for me it's at second because of Time of Your Life, which I've always hated.
@@prisonmike4749 Time of Your Life is not a bad song, just overplayed. With that being said, any time I play Nimrod, I skip that song.
Holy shit, this is no joke my favourite album of all time. Without this album, I would’ve never gotten into classic punk, then one thing led to another and now I’m listening to all sorts of metal
I agree completely. Green Day got me into punk rock, along with Sum 41 and Fall Out Boy.
Dookie is like all of 1994 pressed onto a single cassette and I love it
Everyone is saying that Dookie is a throwback album.... but I still listen to this stuff daily.
*Always Sunny music*
Title card: Luke analyzes & discusses the importance of Dookie.
My favorite Green Day album is American Idiot. But I also like Dookie, Nimrod, Warning & Insomniac.
Same here. While Dookie will always be a classic, American Idiot was just on another level, especially with Jesus of Suburbia.
Hello!Nurd same
My favorite is Dookie, followed by Insomniac, Nimrod, Warning, American Idiot, and 21st Century Breakdown, in that order.
Green Day may have released Dookie in 1994, but they didn’t release dookie until 2012.
Agreed, they should have just took the best of each album, and make just one good album
@Libertarian Jaguar 21st Century Breakdown is in my top 5 green day albums
5. 21st Century Breakdown
4. Warning
3. Dookie
2. Nimrod
1. American Idiot
@Libertarian Jaguar 21st Century is amazing.
ARTV Holy shit ARTV commented on my comment
ARTV I respectfully will vaguely disagree. It’s good to me, but not great.
Even being one of the most popular punk rock bands in the world, Green Day is still underrated. Billie Joe is one of the best song writers there ever has been. All the more amazing when a lot of the songs are built off basic power chords. Tre Cool is a phenominal drummer, and Mike can lay down one steaming bass line. If you have ever seen one of their more modern live shows, you would know they put on the best concert you will ever see. I saw them front row 10 years ago, and it was probably my favorite show ever. Even compared to all the classic rock legends I've seen.
I can definitely say Green Day's dookie is the s***.
Not a turd among the songs.
It's a number 2 on my playlist.
dude this is my favorite album of all time. i discovered it when i was like 5 years old and it kickstarted my passion for music. seeing you covering this in this fashion is so cool to see
This album is so good.
I love this series mate. Could you possibly do one of Weezer's first two albums, System of a Down's Toxicity or one of the Beatles' later albums?
I really admire how much work you put into this, giving the appreciation that they deserve
This is one of my all time favorite albums as well! Thank you for the video Luke!!!!!!!!!
Cool. An album that you from the past you shouldn't regret. This album reminds me of freshman year of high school.
Great review. Thank you.
Dookie is a great album.. 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk are great as well
I remember that album when it came out. It was great, and it has one of the best album covers of all time
Well this is a surprise upload. I love it already. 🤘
Do you have the time to listen to me whine? The very definition of iconic
i was either in 8th or 9th grade when this came out and i LOVE IT....my favorite song is "EMENIUS SLEEPUS"....i paused the first second of the video and typed this comment before seeing your review....to claim my favorite before i hear what you say about it
For some reason, the Rock Band version of Burnout has 3 part vocal harmonies on the line Dead before the drum solo begins, there are also 2 part voices for the previous word. Only the middle voice is used in the retail version, the former harmony is omitted, and I don't know why.
I was supposed to see then two years ago and they never rescheduled. They don’t care about their fans. If they did, they would have come back.
My first album was Fuel's Natural Selection, while clearly not a band that stood the test of time, I still go back to that album for pure nostalgia #neverforgetyourfirst
Panic!'s Pray For The Wicked... god help me
"Comatose" by Skillet was my first album that I bought. "Dookie" is a great album, probably my favorite Green Day album
My first was American Idiot, I was in kindergarten and my neighbor had shown me Green Day so I bought that album and still listen to it all the time, but not as much as Dookie 🤘🏻
Dookie is iconic. My personal favorite GD album is Nimrod.
Do a review of American Idiot, This Albom literlily revived Green Day in the 2000's and it has an Intreasing story. C'mon ROCKED DO IT!!!!
I love The Dookie jokes lol. This is one of the greatest albums of all time. I might be a little bias because I’m a huge Green Day fan and fan of 90s rock/alternative.
I like Dookie. Grew up with it at school. But American Idiot is my favourite Green Day album. Classic after classic song. Great writing and production and original in concept.
My first rock cd
Cool of you to share what your first cd that you ever bought was. My first was The Battle of Los Angeles from Rage Against the Machine. Anyways great ATF episode as always!!
Its always nice to have a nice long relaxing satisfying Dookie.
Great album and I loved playing the whole album on Green Day:Rock Band
One of my all-time favorite albums also
One of my 3 fave Green Day albums. Other 2 being "Warning" and "American Idiot"
Does anyone agree that Insomniac is a top 3 too? Along with Kerplunk!?
Insomniac is underrated
Insomniac is my favorite Green Day record. Then Kerplunk. Dookie is probably middle of the pack.
Insomniac was awesome. Unfortunately it kinda came out at a weird time for the band which is what caused it to be the least memorable 90s Green Day album. Right after the decade-defining Dookie and before the Gen Y favorite Nimrod (Time of your Life was epic in the late 90s)
She is very underrated and one of my favorites off the album for the same reasons you point out. :)
Yes, it is indeed an excellent song.
When I was a baby, my dad used to sing some Green Day lyrics to me from Dookie, and I apparently would giggle and coo.
I’m now almost 26 and Green Day is still my favorite band. Finally saw them back in 2017 in concert. One of the best moments I will ever have in my life tbh.
Noice!
Quick question, does Pitchfork have a ridiculous Green Day review? Was it Brent 👀
Just wondering
Was looking for a concert to take my older kids (19 and 23) to...tried to find a band we all knew...Green Day was it!!! I was amazed at their live show...they were surprisingly fantastic!
Still sounds fresh listening it today
Pulling Teeth, F.O.D and Coming Clean are my favorites from Dookie
Pulling Teeth Sounds like an Intro to a 90s Sitcom that doesnt exist. Like introducing the actors one After the other with freeze frames
Not enough dookie jokes. Just joking, loved the video luke! Keep em coming! Greetings from Argentina!
first record i ever bought myself too man, been my favorite album since i was 12
I will admit they aren't my favorites, but I genuinely do love Uno Dos Tré. They are generally best listened to all together in a massive block, but I know not too many people have that kinda time. (Myself included these days) The songs aren't meant to be taken seriously, they wrote the songs just like any other album, each following a theme. Uno is a Pop Rock album, Dos is actually finishing songs from what was supposed to be the second Foxboro Hot Tubs album, and Tré is based on their more anthemic songs without the concept album factor. I know I'm not gonna change anybody's minds on them, but I feel they get way more hate than they deserve.
The main reason people hate those is that they are way more pop-punk than anything else Green Day recorded, and no one wants the band classified as such. For me, the trilogy was a ton of fun, and I loved it when I was 17, but I do think that Dos is way better than Uno and Tré. Stray Heart is great, and Amy is easily the best song on it.
@@thisisawsome34253212 I agree, i'd say Dos is the best of the three. Tre was solid. But Uno, was dragged down by the second half of it I thought. The songs were nothing great. It's their worst album i'd say.
I guess you could say the Trilogy are complete Dookie.
The trilogy was the Mania of Green Day. While not as bad as that album, it was a major letdown given the pedigree of the band.
@@kosakionodera5967 Never compare Mania to any Green Day album.
PrometheusTV yep
@Deathstroke The Merc My apologies, Green Day doesn't deserve a comparison to that, even with their weaker albums.
Mike Dirnt is one of the most underrated bass players of all time, up there with Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground.
Loved dookie and giggled at every last dookie joke.
I was about 14 when this album came out and I can honestly say this album and Smash by The Offspring changed my life. My tastes have certainly grown more nuanced since then, but those bands opened up a new world for me. I listened to a lot of my parents' music and while they did listen to some great stuff, this is where I started to branch out on my own and discover a whole new world outside of what I inherited from them.
Awesome
World's biggest green day fan here. With that being said,
Please do a RTP on Uno Dos and Tre. Despite those 3 albums I still love Green Day!
"She" blew my mind. About 18 years ago, I was 40 and I ending a bad marriage. When I heard Billie Joe sing "She's figured out all her doubts were someone else's point of view", I couldn't believe that a young man, a perfect stranger, could understand me so completely. I will always love Green Day!
Insomniac,21stCBD,Dookie & AI ❤️
I personally think Insomniac is a better album, but Dookie is fantastic
The main thing to take away from this video:
"Dookie is fun to play with"
I love that Allister is in that photo😍
Any song longer than 3 minutes: Lord of The Rings Extended Edition
Jesus of Suburbia: over 9 minutes = WOW!
Some time ago, I took an evening course in American Sign Language. One task the class had to do was choose a song and perform it in ASL. While everyone else chose songs along the lines of "The Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round", I chose "Basket Case".
It was an interesting performance, at least in my mind.
Oh by the way thanks Luke for mentioning Avatar.
So many times.
I finally broke down and start listening to him.
And damn. They are good.
And dookie...hope to see them live one day.
I did it all for the dookie
my first cd was either back in black acda or black album of metallica. i don't remember exactly.
I remember that Green Day was one of the first bands a knew and my dad had dookie and nimrod on cd and I had the CD player in my room and listened to them endlessly.
Regretting the past the Trilogy.
I’ve tried asking him many times. He’s not doing it because Crash already did a video on them. Can’t say I blame him honestly.
This is one of my all-time favs too! Although I gotta say, Pulling Teeth is actually one of my fav non-single Green Day songs ever 😎
Aaron Peterson same
I feel the need to dig out my CD.
great video! please do a review of [Electron Drive] by Kerns and the Hemispheres. theyre a super underground prog rock band from Minneapolis and deserve way more attention
Mad respect for Dookie. Nimrod's my favorite Green Day album though (followed by Kerplunk, and then American Idiot).
I will admit, when Dookie first came out (I was 20 and in college at the time), I want really much of a fan. I kind of liked when I come around, but I was full blown into the thrash metal scene, discovered progressive metal, and was starting to really appreciate really old punk. Didn't resonate with me, but it grew on me, and easily their best album, imo. Basket case is my favorite. Fantastic songwriting. Yes, simple and effective. Good review.
My first CD was either Demon Days by Gorillaz or Singles by Travis
His songwriting on this album was incredible.
He was a great songwriter in his younger days.
Sweet
First cd for me too!!
My favourite lyric of ALL Green Day songs comes on When I Come Around... "you may find out that your self doubt means nothing was ever there, you can't go forcing something is it's just not right" this resonates with me SO hard, to this day... and I've known that line for 25 years!
You should do something for the Blue Album by Weezer
Dookie was my first CD I ever owned. I was 10years old then. You can listen to this Ablum from front to back and every song is awesome. There not many ablums that you can do that with. Still one of my all time favorite ablums.
I remember going to the music store the day that album was released and at my local music shop there was a bench for listening to a selection of just released albums. I sat down and listened to the entire album and as soon as it ended I went to the counter and demanded they took my money. Saw them seven or eight times soon after.
Pulling Teeth is my fav track
I was not alive for Dookie, but it is my favorite green day album, followed by American Idiot and Kerplunk.
You never forget your first. Siamese Dream by the Pumpkins was my first purchase, although it was a cassette tape.
This album was my jr high (middle school). Still love it, know every word and even my daughter loves the album. I grew up in a small town with a crappy AM radio so never heard Green Day on the radio, but Much Music and the CD someone introduced me to got me hooked. After moving to Fredericton NB, I only recently learned that they actually performed here once, back in 1995. BUT... because Billy dropped his pants and underwear on stage (at an all ages show) they were then banned from performing in our province again. Not sure for how long, but I don't think they've ever been back this way since.
this album came out 3 years before i was born but it was still the album that made me fall in love with punk. warning was the album that introduced me to greenday
You should do a video on Shinedown.
Can you imagine how happy I was when Billie Joe said when they played Belgrade conceret in 2013 that they will play Dookie album in full??? Awww, that was awesome!!!
That would have been amazing!
I have the vinyl for this album and it’s an incredible album
Time for my Dookie story: I had just turned 11 in April '94 and my bday gift was a CD Player/Stereo, and like you, my first CD I bought was Dookie. I listened to it a ton in a couple of months and then one day I decided to show my parents the lyrics to Pulling Teeth because I found them humorous. Needless to say, it was promptly taken away, gone forever........ BUT that is not the end! 6 years later I was looking for our sewing kit to add some patches to stuff and I found it hidden in a basket!!!! Redemption! Because I didn't have it for so long, it was and is in mint condition. AND it is a print that has the Elmo on the back.
