Years and years ago there used to be these things called books. We still own some of these relics and occasionally even open them to look at the words. Our old bookcase just wasn't cutting it anymore and Nicole wanted something that not only looked good, but did a better job at protecting the items within. A Barrister's Bookcase was just the thing we needed. We not only store books in ours but also collectibles and other things that might be cool to look at through the glass front doors.
Barrister's bookcases have been around forever and their modular nature means you can expand your collection any time you like. For this particular design, I probably wouldn't stack them higher than 4 and even then I'd recommend securing the unit to the wall.
This project was designed for The Wood Whisperer Guild and if you like what you see here and want to actually build the project, consider buying the full 13-video series: thewoodwhispererguild.com/pro...

Barrister's bookcases are one of my favourite pieces of furniture. And that's one of the nicest pieces I've ever seen. Great job
WHAT!!?!? How!?!? My mind is blown. The perfection. Wow.
Outstanding build, Marc. Love the modular design.
Thanks dude.
The modular design was genius!
Glad to see you adding content even while the shop is temporarily dismantled and in transit :)
Beautifully made
Seriously sharp! Like I was expecting otherwise! thanks for the great inspiration.
Frickin slick! Killer looking.
Another beautiful piece Marc! Thanks for sharing and everything you do for the community!
Dude!...your projects always get me fired up for some shop time. Nothing better than tight joinery!
stunning and beautifully done. your pride in your work is always a pleasure to watch
So cool! The look of that walnut ply is amazing, and I like the stacking part. I'm sure the movers appreciate that!
Absolutely gorgeous. I love how the doors were done. I think I'll give it a try but for a bar instead. Never disappointed with your work or music selection.
Cheers
This kind of video is amazing! Please, do more! It's incredible to see the project in the beggining and in the end!
WOW! That looks fantastic. I remember watching The New Yankee Workshop with my dad when I was younger, and this just brought me back to that. Thanks for the great video and keep up the great work! Can't wait to see what else you make.
Thanks for the video. It's cool to get a quick look at the things that the guild builds. Keep up the great work and good luck with your moving adventures. I love listening to Wood Talk and following along with the saga.
Simply beautiful...what a piece! Great design!
Ace work. Loved the detail. Appears quite strong with minimal use of wood.
Everything that you build is just amazingly gorgeous. Thank you for your efforts and for sharing.
Thanks very much!!
Wow. That is a work of art! Absolutely stunning.
I always enjoy your videos. The precision and care really shines through in your approach.
True craftsmanship !! I would love to have a couple of them.
I love these videos Marc. It's great to see the build come together, even if I'm not immediately interested in doing the guild build. Music was a good touch.
Beautiful work Marc. Thanks for sharing.
very soothing video to watch!
I think this is my favorite video that you've ever put out. Well done Marc.
Beautiful barrister bookcases! They are my favorite style of bookcase. If I didn't already have 3 stacks, floor to ceiling stacks of globe-wernicke, I'd definitely purchase this project on the guild.
Tree-mendous, sir! Excellent work! And, I fine farewell, a serene send-off, to the 'old' shop. Well done in all regards! All the very best going forward, to you and all those you love!
My FAVORITE furniture piece!
very nice job and a sharp looking bandaid
That one's for the homies.
A very nice piece!
This is what woodworking heaven looks like!
amazing finished product!
That'll hold a few copies of Hybrid Woodworking! Sweet stuff!
Awesome, always wanted to build one of these for handplane collections... the modularity is awesome... May have to be the first project series I purchase
Awesome project! Definitely the type of thing to get me to sign up for the Guild.
I love everything about this video. Well done!
At 5:34 I honestly thought you were making a giant frame of the Wood Whisperer logo for a minute :p
Hey Mark, that is nice, very nice. I always thought that the barrister was not only useful but beautiful. Yours is both.
i can se this being a hit with clasic manga colectors. just wonderfull. thanks for sharing.
A fine piece of furniture. I am in awe.
Still got it. Thanks for sharing. Good luck on the move and look forward to new videos.
Gorgeous project Marc 👍
Beautiful. Excellent job.
Wow, beautiful work and an excellent video! :) Thank you!
Hiya, simply stunning. The way the grain popped when you applied the wipe on...
Brings back memories.
Wow such beautiful work this is incredible build. Can't wait to see the grandfather clock but I know you and your family are in the process of moving. Which I hope is going well. Keep up the great work
Beautiful work Mark. We own a set of antique Barristers made of quarter sawn Oak. Yours is nicer. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely beautiful! I only wish the video would have been an hour long so I could have watched more of what actually went on. Just magnificent. We have one that is probably 100 years old that I pulled out of my Mother-in-laws cellar. I refinished it, but it's still in good shape. And yes, we keep books in it.
Beautiful work!
Great build Marc!
Thanks!
Very slick Marc.
Wow that was quick. Nice build. I followed along with the guild video and it took me 4 weeks to build it. I should have waited for the free version....lol.
Beautiful piece!
Fantastic project!
First rate as always Marc. Thanks!
That project came out great and it was an interesting scene to see your logo below the glass panel.
I really like this type of video. Thanks for the content.
Simply beautiful.
Great work! Thank you for your sharing!
nice video! finally a woodworker that leaves the shop noise out of the video :D
That turned out great!
Excellent, very nice...
Cheers...
I remember Norm making one of these way back
I don't know how 41 people could not like this video. Great job man
That is an awesome project.
Thanks for the great video. They are beautiful
Nice work, sir! Thank you!
Beautiful
Barrister bookcases are totally underrated
That's simply a lovely piece of work.. man.. I wish I knew how to do this kinda stuff, and had access to a workshop
Beautiful!
Beautiful, thanks.
stunning
Wow. Definitely making one of these
beautiful!
wow!! one of my favorite videos ever
Last time I saw one of these was at a estate auction 6 years ago. It was 4 high and sold for a mere $3900
i have the same exact thing, but in metal. we use it as a pantry. love it
Nice build Marc
How much does a guild subscription cost?
And do you also show how to make these with fewer tools?
Excelente trabajo.
I love the pretty band-aid at 2:02
Nice work
I've never worked with wood, besides putting together furniture. I also need more bookcases for my library, but I would rather go out and make one out of trees, but I want more detail like this Barrister's bookcase, unlike an ordinary square and ladder looking bookcase.
excellent work dude
beautiful
Great skills!!!
That plywood! I would love to work with ply like that
So pretty, wish I had more than a jigsaw and a hand plane so I could make one myself.
Maybe if you're really REALLY good with a jigsaw...
I thought this build and video were excellent. Brilliant piece!
What is the best wood for outside drawers and a fast and str
Can you please explain the wipe on finishing process please? Poly first then wipe on oil never used this before so very interested in this.
That's Perfect.
I have one purchased years ago from JC Penney. I put too much weight in books on the shelf and now it’s bowed down and the glass door below can’t open. 😢
Very nice. Definitely comparable to the antique originals that now cost over $200 a section...
That would be perfect for displaying LEGO creations. Just need to add some LED light strips to the top of each compartment.
Hey Marc that's beautiful, so many components to trim to size and flush up and every one of them is a perfect fit. I notice you've glued boards together in a cross grain arrangement in some places or you've glued plywood to solid, do you have any issues with movement?
+One Man Band Woodworking not the way it was done here. Have to be strategic about it.
Marc, it's always a pleasure seeing the projects you make. One question, what fence is that on your crosscut sled? I've tried searching for it, but can't find anything similar.
