My daughter told me if you ask Rick Astley for a DVD copy of Disney/Pixar's Up, you will get trapped in the Rick Astley paradox. He cant give you Up, and as a result he will be letting you down, something he said he would never do! 😁
When it comes to the paradox of hedonism, people often confuse pleasure with happiness. Seeking pleasure through drugs, food, sex, etc. results only in a fleeting, rather hollow sense of satisfaction, that leaves emptiness in its wake. Happiness, on the other hand, is much harder to achieve as it requires much more effort over much longer time, but it is the best feeling ever, a true satisfaction and meaning in one's life. Achieving happiness is hard and often takes years, so many give up and rather indulge in seeking only pleasure, leading to a stagnant existence filled with fleeting moments of pleasure amidst a sea of emptiness. I think most of us were in that place at some point in our lives. But going from seeking pleasure to seeking happiness is the best thing you can do if you want a meaningful and fulfilling life.
The Coastline Paradox puts me in mind of my High School Calculus course. If you draw a line one foot from a wall then divide the distance in half and draw a line at 6 inches and repeat the process - 3 inches, 1.5 inches, the distance would become so infinitely small that you would never reach the wall.
If the statement "Nothing is certain" is true, does that mean that the statement "Nothing is certain" is not certain? If you can prove with certainty that "Nothing is certain" is true, you have at least one certain thing, that statement... And it says "nothing is certain", which means that even "nothing is certain" is not certain.
That’s interesting. I feel like it’s not a paradox tho as you could say that a lot of thing are certain. For example, I wrote this comment on my phone, or I am currently lying down. Those things are certain.
I guess it depends on your definition of certain. The actual definition is “able to be firmly relied on to happen or be the case.” The second half of the definition leads me to believe that you can assert things currently happening or that have happened to be certain.
I think you got something not true about the paradox of Achilles and the Tortoise at 7:13 . That paradox belongs to Zeno of Elea and not to Zeno of Citium (the founder of Stoicism).
The trick is that the time also is decreased down to infinity small , so Achilles reach the tortoise in an infinitely small moment , then overreach it in an expanding time
i think the definition of paradox had to be established in this video at its start. the Simpson's paradox is a definitional paradox. but this is a philosophy channel where the meaning pf paradox is not the same as a mathematical paradox. statistics and numbers can say whatever we want them to say. so paradoxes appear either by intentional coercion, an oversite, an error, or by not framing the the data with enough specificity.

Biggest paradox is life itself. We exist because two people fooled around in bed and created us. We never had a choice of wanting to exist to begin with, yet you can't have a choice if you're not existing already.
question, just curious why do we assume if there is life on other planets or in the universe, that theyd be more advanced than us today? why wouldnt we assume their civilization is equal to, or less than ours? i get the years in difference between galaxies, however, what if they were on a different time scale to where all life is generally the same, just different species. like pretend life started here 1 billion years ago, and earth is 2 billion years old, we are saying we are advance as of the last 1000 or so years say planet Smearth(different galaxy) is 21 billion years old, and life started 20 billion years ago on Smearth, what is to say it wouldnt have taken them all that time, up until the last thousand years(our time) to become just as advanced as us, or less than. why assume theyd be able to travel intergalactically? or be way more advanced? what if they just evolve(d) slower than our guestimated prediction for the human evolution im high btw, lol but ive just wondered.
I'd argue the coastline paradox isn't real. If you try to do that sort of measurement in practical terms, you would get a curve that slowly evens out the more smaller your ruler gets, because the smaller ruler leads to more accurate, and not necessarily larger measures. If the initial measurement of an example coastline is 92.4 kilometers, and we keep on going to more accurate measurements, we would eventually get to values such as 92.423423662384769485764865238459270919691864102597341685671048756189234097254.... but because the rate at which the value increases is getting far smaller, the more accurate we get, it means that the increase of that number will be infinitely small, when using an infinitely small ruler, which means that the increase would be somewhere along the lines on 1×a^∞ (1 times a to the power of infinity), which, even when combined with all the other changes, will not be enough to ever reach 92.5 kilometers. So correct me if I'm wrong, but the number might get more accurate, yet it will never reach a significantly higher value over time, because the infinite changes are getting infintely small, and as such will be unable to affect far larger (and more significant) values. Eventually, we will get diminishing returns for our higher accuracy and will not be able to go much further.
