- This is a little bit of a busy season for me, with several shows and auctions back to back and a couple of Spec Miata races - as such, I haven't gotten to upload much in the past couple of weeks.
By next week, that will change - there's lots of good stuff waiting in the back to be filmed and marketed, and August should be a good month for videos - I go over a few of what's coming in this video, along with a quick review af an Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale Brougham sedan on the classic GM B-Body Platform.

This was my childhood car, my dad bought one in 1988 and we kept it for 10 years. So many memories, long road trips with no phones or internet, even with me and my 2 siblings in the back seat it never felt cramped or crowded. My brother learned how to drive in this car and that was a whole new set of memories. I miss the good old days

I had this car! This model/color and everything…I bought it from a friend’s Dad for $500 back in 1997!!! The most comfortable car I have ever driven…two comfy couches on a cloud! The best $500 I have spent.
I bought a 79 for $400 in 2004 it was great .
I detailed it and it looked nice

My folks had an 82 Olds Delta 88 in '85. Tan with dark blue vinyl top and the plushest velour interior you ever sat in. Had the Olds 307 and 4bbl. A 15yr old me pulled CRAZY burnouts, even with the paltry hp. Great torque though. Dad, hope you're not reading this, LOL

My aunt would get a new full sized Olds every two years and this was one of them - even the same color, and it was one of the cars I learned to drive on. Thanks for posting this. Your comment on China saving Buick was spot on - most people don't realize it wasn't about Buick having a better line up or sales versus Olds in the US, because they didn't. It was all about preserving Buick sales in China - hard to sell an essentially dead brand in China. And yet Buick is essentially dead in the US, with a haphazard line up of forgettable and rebranded corporate and Asian market CUVs. But Olds went down swinging with well reviewed products like the Alero and Aurora that Buick didn't have versions of.
Yes Buick is such an embarrassment today,all crossover jellybean styled safety pods,the elegance is gone.

The 77-90 GM B-Body cars are the best in every way. No other vehicle even comes close. I've owned a few and I really regret getting rid of them. I'm determined to get another one. Or more.

I learned to drive in an '85 Chevrolet Caprice that my dad had as a demo from the Chevy dealer where he was a salesman. Same body as the Olds. Absolutely was a pleasure to drive!
My buddys mom had one. I still remember him borrowing his moms car, specifically running out of gas. I was in good shape but pushing that beast 1/4 mile to the gas station wasn't fun. She's a big girl.
I had one of these cars and was in love with it. I had 4 uncles that were all Olds engineers and at one family function all stood around it asking questions and taking turns driving it. They loved it too. I live in Lansing ,Michigan the home of the late great Olds.

I have been trying to find one of these in this color for years... to find the paint code. Your video showed it perfectly! This factory GM color looks amazing on an air cooled Beetle. I love looking so closely at the array of vehicles you display in your videos, keep them coming.
I had the diesel version and loved it got over 130k and never needed head gaskets, but my grandfather owned it and took great care of it. Great videos!
I had the Diesel too. I was dumb, did not monitor the fluid-levels frequently enough, the car went in a need for new gaskets.

I can remember exactly how those power window switches feel... including how hot they would get on hot days 😅
I loved the old GM "chrome" paddle style power window switches (especially the higher end models where they were grouped in a nest of buttons on the driver door). They just felt special on your fingertips and looked great. Today's black plastic rocker style switches found on every range of car don't look or feel special. Every car has them from the cheapest to most expensive. I don't remember the old GM power window switches feeling hot.

I used to visit Florida twice a year. Three weeks at a time with a gorgeous rental home. The last time I went there I got sick of the weather, not so great food, and generally boring. The flamingos and palm trees lost their novelty a long time ago.

Love it! My 1st car! Im 33 i got it when i was 17 from a cougar >older friends >mom, from south side Houston. Its priceless wine color with red interior. Blk people and older white gentlemen always showed love lol.

I had one of the very last 1985 Delta 88 Royal Brougham's to roll off the assembly line. Mine was produced in August, 1985. It had lots of options including rare gage package.
This is great. The memories from childhood come flooding back. My dad had this exact car minus the vinyl top. Same color and interior, he put some wide white wall tires on it and detailed it every week. That squeak when the trunk raises up and closes absolutely sounds exactly the same. Great video Bill.

I had a ‘85 Delta 88, & loved it!
It was pretty loaded; intermittent wipers, gauges, leather, self-leveling rear-end, electric mirrors, power antenna, etc.
I miss it!
No rust, solid, smooth, quiet.
It was silver with grey interior.
My wife got Alzheimer’s, & gave it away….along with a number of others.
The 307 V-8 did go into the wagons right up until the ‘90 model year, the last of them.
-I had a few of those, too!
They were carbureted until the bitter end, and quite reliable.
My '86 Regency Brougham had the exact same dual-tone seatbelt chime. I thought I had MADE IT whenever I got into that car!
29:13 to anybody that does not know, that little vent is called a “crotch cooler”. There is one for the drivers side as well.

I had a new Delta 88 2 door in 1983. I loved that car and still miss it. The cars of the 80's were so much better than the junk of the 90's.
My first car was one of these. It was my great grandfather's last car before he passed (1992, I was 8). The car got passed around through the family and I ended up with it ( as an old beat up project) for Christmas when I was 14(2000). I had it running by new year, and drove to school at 15. It was white with red top/interior. 307v8, wire hubcaps. Still a very sweet spot in my heart.

Bill, this came out when I was a teen and I loved it. You aren't the only one who liked old lady cars. I was horrified by the 1985 98, Electra and de Ville. They were pukes. I had just gotten over the death of the four door hardtop. I'm sure people switched to Mercury before it went aero.
The last four cars have been amazing. The Cordoba can wait. A Matador will be exciting.

Just saw ur video. I bought that model with a diesel in 1979 or 80. The first motor, I replaced at abt 90,000 miles. The second motor
ran flawless for 200,000 miles, just needed the fuel pump replaced. I geared it down with larger tires and got 32 miles a gallon on the highway.

Couldn't agree with you more -- The 88, LeSabre and Caprice were nice riding family cars. Perfect to hall everyone up to the lake on summer vacation. I agree GM completely lost it after this series...Cordoba AND a Matador! AWESOME! Remember the goofy ads for the Matador?: It's...a Matador! (Cheeky high school boys mocked the ads and substituted other less-complimentary words in place of the nameplate to describe the car, as I recall) '77 Monte Carlo too -- fantastic! Even though the three of them all kinda fell apart after a few years, at least they each had some personality. -- I was thinking that your brain fog may be from lack of sleep. Have you ever been tested to see if you have sleep apnea? Anyway thank you for being so incredible! You are terrific at what you do!
I've just discovered the channel and I really like Bill's knowlege and review of cars.........and the weather. Bill is funny and very informative, love the cars he reviews. Bill is thorough kind of like Paul Harrell reviews guns. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for sharing this Oldsmobile Eighty Eight. I enjoyed the video. I appreciate your comments and information you shared. I own two Oldsmobiles. I do miss Oldsmobiles like this... Just imagine if the last Ninety Eight had been rear drive.. The Eighty Eight ran until 1999. You will get attention driving a car like this. I like the Delta 88 Royale Brougham LS from 1984-1985. It had Ninety Eight parts on it. It was to fill the void left by the downsized Ninety Eight.
Yes, the stop-gap Brougham LS 88s from '84-85 were really nice. It's a shame they did not have the formal roof cap that Chevy put on the Caprice Brougham LS in the late '80s - that would have been perfect.
Very nice Oldsmobile for sure. I had a Delta 88 back in the 90's when I lived in Phoenix AZ and I loved it.
I'd love to have this Oldsmobile. I learned how to drive in a triple black 1979 Oldsmobile 98 Regency my mom had. That 350 V8 would run. Because of it I love these cars. The chrome, the big car feel, etc is pretty awesome! This blue is nice on it.
The first two cars I ever had in the mid 90's. A 1981 2 door and a 1984 4 door. Those were true tanks. GM should have never killed traditional RWD. Those 307's were great motors.

My great grandfather owned a 1903 Oldsmobile 'tiller steering '. Here in New Zealand it was one of only a handful of automobiles at that time.
Later, in the 20s he had Hudsons and an Essex.

I had an 85 exactly like this one ...only it was the Light Sage (green) One of the best cars I ever had....one day I might buy another good one if I can find it. Here in Canada these cars are hard to come by. Awesome video.....really took me back.
I had one of these... it was a Royal Brougham... Chocolate metallic /Champaign metallic (hood, roof, trunk lid)... dark chocolate valor interior... had a cassette player... a few other extras this one doesn't have... one of the nicest driving cars I ever owned... decent gas mileage too... brought back a lot of memories seeing this...

To answer Bill's question. The station wagons continued on in using the 307 Olds engine. I believe a 350 was available as an option for a time but I've never seen one, and I don't know what division those 350's were from.
The GM B-body car's were without doubt GM at it's finest. These are the cars that GM excelled in. I've had five of them and the last three have been wagons. B-body cars are just plain wonderful, as known by anyone having spent time in them, and people new to them will learn. One thing I have always said (and experienced) is that the B-body cars will go through any kind of weather, you name it, blizzard, searing heat, hurricane, even sub-zero temps. And they keep running and running. Anyone that has a B-body car has learned that basically you just replace parts as their needed because the engine, trans and rear end will just last and last.
These would be an excellent choice for anyone seeking their first vintage car. Good parts availability, easy to work on, and low maintenance. I say more time would be spent on keeping the paint shiny and other cosmetics looking good than would be for mechanical work.
1980 was the last year for the 350 in the civilian (non-police) B-bodies. Chevy, Olds, Buick and Pontiac all had their own versions, though there was some cross-over going on (I think the LeSabre may have gotten some Olds 350s).
The Chevy 350 made a return in the next-generation Chevy, Olds, and Buick B-bodies in the '90s.

Bill my mom owned one of these 1985 olds 88s , that car road good drove good , would move on with the air cleaner top flipped over so we could here that foe barrel kick in , but loaded , nice comfort cold AC , nice radio , just a lovely ride , she drove it for yrs , out 180,000 plus miles on it , then bought a new 1985 caddie loaded an gave that car to her sister , an she drove that car for another 10 yrs , it finally tucker'd out an was scrapped I believe , but it gave us alot of comfort , an memories of Bea h trips , mountain trips , just a good V8 smooth car .
The old air cleaner trick. I did this to my Mom's '82 Delta 88 but it did not seem to improve performance. It did make the intake louder under full throttle, though.

I owned the car but it was the Chevy Impala. When you showed the interior and drove it was like deva-vu. I bought it in St Louis for a nasty winter stint in VT/MA Boston area. It just did the job with flyers. If you tried to push it past 85 it somehow didn't have the valve or compression or any number of things that made it slow on the highway. In the city it was a snow plow and jumped over obstacles with a happy obedience. But this whole show is about Olds. Must be the corona whiskey at a late hour. You did have to drive thru SC to get home so yes you did experience the incredible driving skills of this region - truly remarkable for wow factor and death quotient.
Love the GM pillow top seats, I really miss having them in my car. They’re comfier than my couch, and I’ve fallen asleep on my couch.
Yes! Thats what I remember the most in the 70s- 80s cars. Those pillowtop seats. Hands down, the most comfortable seats ever put in cars. Now the trend is tight leather. No comparison to these rolling couches.... Cheers!!!

My dad had a 4 door Cutlass Supreme with that engine at the time. It just whooshed that car very nicely from the stop light. I loved driving it.
My dead had the two door version of this. And oh my gosh was it comfortable, that suspension was like riding on a cloud you never felt the bumps on the road. His was burgundy with gold stripes and the back vinyl roof, and the largest trunk, we took many a road trip from Utah to California, the car looked very upscale many confused it with the Buick RIviera, or the Cadillac Eldorado of the time. I remember that it came with a Oldsmobile Cassette tape and even had music by Santana on it. The car had a V8 not the most torquey or powerful but it had a relaxed acceleration to it, I also remember the clock was analog and not digital. And the locking wirewheel hub caps with whitewall tires. Just a nice highway cruiser.
I can picture my grandfather driving 1 like this complete w/ his white shoes & belt.Boy it looks clean too.Drivers education 1974 we used that matador,it was weird & you're assistant hit the nail on the head ,Bill ,I thought you had better taste than that!

My father had an '85 Delta 88 in 86. It was the first car I drove. Long story short it's a warm humid Sunday morning, I'm with my family in the Delta 88, we're on our way to the 10:00 church service but my father didn't turn on the A/C. As the windows fog up all you can see are barefoot prints in the windows. Yeah, '86 was the year i lost my virginity in the Delta 88. Good times.
When did "we" decide that leather = luxury? I sorta miss the era of luxurious cloth interiors.
Man, do I agree with you! I have never been a fan of leather interiors. Those GM high-level interiors with Prima velour (just like velvet) were the pinnacle of soft, luxurious seats. And they made the interior as quiet as a library.
Bill, This is the kind of automobile America truly needs. Forget about those overpowered, overpriced, over-complicated foreign job. America is all about cruising on big interstates and going to the local super market , shopping mal, or golf course.. GM and Ford, bring back the reasonably priced luxury sedan, for chris sake.

I’ve been privileged to have owned 2 of these Olds Delta 88 Royale’s, one being a Brougham. I have to say that both of these cars were just excellent. The Brougham drove just as nice as Cadillac Sedans of the same era.
My Grandmother had one of these cars. Her car was a 1984 Olds Delta 88 which was loaded with the pillow seats and all. Seeing this car reminds me of smelling Double Mint gum and Georgio perfume while riding down the road with my Grandmother as a kid.

That GM family HVAC control takes me back to my youth. They had to use that for a couple of decades. Now it takes a doctorate in computer science to work the HVAC controls in a modern vehicle. WOW! I'm glad I watched until the very end of the video. Bill just buried that needle. Okay, it only registers 85 but I think Bill may have hit 95 or 100 with that 307 cu pumping out 140 HP with 240 lb-ft of torque. It really is an Interstate cruiser par excellence.
One of my earliest memories is picking up our Delta 88 Royale Brougham from the dealership. Just like this one except in a light tan.

OMG you are not wrong about driving in NC and SC! I always try to stay as far to the right as possible going a consistent speed, and I’m always passing trucks to my left or some jagoff will be about to pass me and then back off, or will actually pass me, get in front, and then slow down. Forces me to floor it for several minutes just to get away from them!
