Daniel Donato Teaches Cosmic Country Guitar Playing Style | Reverb

- Nashville guitarist Daniel Donato is back at Reverb for another guitar lesson. Over the past few months, we've watched him teach us some of the building blocks and inspirations for his own style-like Jerry Reed-style double-steps, hybrid picking styles and rhythms, and Jerry Garcia-style chromatic riffs. Today, though, he's zeroing in on the nuances of his personal style, which he calls "cosmic country."

For everyone that is hating... he is referencing many things we all love: past players, going by feel and not being able to properly explain it, and best of all - he's a young kid who will inspire a new generation of young kids to play real instruments. I love it!
Lol, so many haters. Gram Pasons called it Cosmic American Music. Trust me, I'm an expert cause I have access to Wikipedia. This dude rocks. Stop hating.
Sean Newton forreal
40 seconds in and this guys flexing about how well he did in English class
So, so happy you pointed this out...
He's just young. He has been a really good guitar player longer than most already though. I wish we could just be respectful and quietly see things for what they are.
I think he was joking
That's the funkiest improv I've ever heard over the Macarena. Need to get this guy to play at my next birthday party.
Hahahahahah dooood
I did pretty good in English class too. I also did well in pop music history, pretty sure "cosmic country" was what they were using to describe what Gram Parson and to a lesser extent the more progressive Texas guys like Ray Wylie Hubbard. But semantics aside, good lesson; all stuff that I already use regularly in my repertoire that I cant verbally elaborate on as well.
"pretty good" in English...
Exactly this--"cosmic country" was gram parsons
There's a reason there's a lot of buzz around this guy in Nashville among the pros. He really has his own little voice going. Just a monster young player
The tone is pretty warm and soft for a Tele bridge pup. Sounds great.
This guy is the real deal. So excited to see him play live this summer.
this guy plays great
everyone likes to dive into semantics
As a native British citizen I might challenge you on your English, but you as a native American I'd never dare challenge you on your guitar playing, another great lesson, many thanks !
I can't believe Reverb released this video or atlleast should of told him what cosmic country is and came from in the 60s with Gram Parson ...he's just playing Jerry Garcia licks over and over .
Edit Parsons not parson
Really... you can't believe Reverb released this? This is EXACTLY what reverb would do. What started as a great alternative to EBAY has become the Guitar Center of internet guitar playing bullshit...
well he referenced him many times. I learned something.
@@straygeraniums1 I wish I could upvote this comment 1,000 times. I agree.
Reverb jumped the shark a while ago.
Play Dorian on a telecaster. Call it country. Smile like you just came back from getting a prostate exam. 🤘
Saw Daniel playing at Robert’s in like 2014. He was a kid!! Pleasure to watch back then and still sounds great. Have to admit, though, the whole playing Gm over C sure sounds a lot like “Eight Miles High”
Sigourney weaver looks great for her age!!
The kid knows "his" stuff. Sure, others came before, but some try to strike out on their own into new fields. OK, it's impossible when you dig down but it's the way we evolve and move forward. Good licks kid. Now join the players and play on!
I mean hes already had a stint with one of the most legendary Nashville country bands with Don Kelley. He doesn't need to join really
The country guitar phaser sound is my favorite guitar sound
I'm glad I stopped taking lessons and learned to develop my own technique when I was younger. That said, I don't think I'd ever claim I invented a genre. If you do it, chances are it's been done. But I think this dude is pretty cool, despite not having inventing "cosmic country". And at least he's not doing a Nick Jonas impersonation with his blue Telecaster
Don’t mind the haters kid I loved your intro & enthusiasm ; )
Really enjoyable 😎🎸✅
Reverb my favorite Guitar Source! My last Buy was Eastwoods 1975 Norris The Cosey!
Who cares if he didn't invent the term, his playing is cool
Everything about this is cool except for claiming he invented the term 'cosmic country'
What about his lack of theoretical knowledge? I don't think that's cool.
You didn't invent it.
@@jerrymorganjr your that guy aren't you? You know, the one that speaks and there's an awkward silence as everyone tries to hold their laughter...
@@soundknight You're that guy wishes you were cool.
It sounds like the grateful dead
I like the sound. That’s enough for me.
It’s not really C Dorian. He doesn’t play the Eb. It’s just superimposing the minor 5 arpeggio over the 1 chord. Cool sound. Lots of guys have been doing similar things for decades.
He has had a Great teacher.
yo that "G Minor over C thing" is really more just playin C Dorian over a C major chord, his analysis is a lil weird sometimes
Agreed, that kinda did my head in a little. Nice enough sounds. The kid's got some quirks and is definitely self-assured.
TheInsanityofGab his explanation is valid though-it’s just more commonly framed that way among jazz players. Really all he’s doing is a playing a C9 or Cdom9, which is a C major plus the Dom 7 (Bb) and 9 (D) but leaving out the root and 3rd. He’s not playing an Eb so it wouldn’t be a minor mode.
He acknowledges that he’s playing modally but isn’t familiar with the details of that language so explains it in a way that makes sense to him.
Eh. Any polytonality/bitonality/chromaticism can be pretty easily described in terms of the original key. From what I can tell from all the reading and learning I’ve been able to do, it’s really a matter of How you actually use the notes/chords.
For instance, you can play the chord progression C, D/C. And yeah, you can say you’re modally playing 4, 57 in the key of D, but because of how you use it you can get a more “lifting” 1, 2 progression in C lydian. You’re not actually Playing anything different, but it does feel different. Same thing with playing C lydian over E minor. Same notes, different feel. And that’s all he’s getting at, I think.
But why does a c dorian work work over a major chord?
This guy is a natural teacher, great stuff
Nothing wrong with this lesson. What's wrong is all the unnecessary criticism of someone else's nature. why don't y'all make some videos so everyone can sit back and say the same things about all of your quirky nuances that I'm sure we all have
I"ve stolen a lot of stuff from this kid... not sure he is a kid anymore.. great player... I find him amusing
If this is “cosmic country” I think he’s wayyyyy behind the curve lol
Cosmic. Country. Now that's two words I never saw coming in the same sentence.
You invented "Cosmic Country" ???
you and Matteo Mancuso need to get together, Ha! you are really good at your craft!
next level dude
Boomers all up in here, couldn't even dream of coming close to this cat. As if he was unaware of the pioneers who came before him. Kid was in Don Kelly's band when he was still a teenager. OK BOOMERS?
Watch some of his live videos on UA-cam, he hasn’t been playing that long and is really good, haters wake up, the next Danny Gatton
jerry reed was a beast
Satchel's son?!
Great playng though!
That smile he gives after claiming credit for a style of music which has existed for 40 years
Cosmic country was not invented by this person
Who first did it then. Sounds new to me
@@StaxRail I think Gram Parsons would have a say in it if he was alive.
Cosmic Country started in the 70s.
@@BIZARBIES ok, thanks. Will search him up
@@StaxRail yeah Gram Parsons called his style cosmic country. However - it does not really sound like this. He was very influential in the whole southern rock genre however and well worth checking out.
ua-cam.com/video/MxG3m0ih5fY/v-deo.html
this album is also cosmic..
I think it’s called Chicken Pickin for short..
Can you slow down that riff at 3:30?
Click on the options button and change playback speed
I didn't know Spiderman played guitar
Tom Holland teaching cosmic country in a shell
Ever hear of Gram Parsons homie? This shit has been around along time before you stumbled on it. LOL!
More like Cosmic Italian Pop. That is the riff to Hey Macerena!!!!
I thought the same thing 😂 yeehaw macarena
If you get confused listen to the music play
sorry man but
you didn't create Cosmic Country.
but cool techniques
Is that Spiderman?
they must have a common ancestor from two or three generations ago.
And this is why you learn your modes, because otherwise you'll become some dude explaining them as if he invented it.
Damn, I thought the exact same thing...
Yeah, point taken about learning modes but it sounds like you're projecting negativity and posturing onto this amiable young man that really isn't there.
he don't come across as though he invented it. he does seem super excited
Sounds like the Macarena 😂😂
Daaamn, spider man play the hell out of it!
I instantly thought he looked like Tom Holland
This is just jerry Garcia’s’ style
Sounds a bit like Mark Knopfler in parts
Alright, big-shots. Whenever you feel like coming to town I'm sure Dan wouldn't mind you getting up with him to prove your ability to play like this throughout a 4 hour set several nights a week. ua-cam.com/video/er_KGUvoh94/v-deo.html
I would LOVE to see that set.
Daniel is a bad ass.
Gm over C is just a C9 chord :/
Boomers mourn the fact that the guitar is ‘dead’ and that the old rock stars used to have personalities, so naturally when a kid who is great at guitar and confident they..., hate him. Naturally. hahaha
Kinda looks like tom Holland
Technically he is not playing over a C major chord, in fact he is playing G dorian over a C7 chord. That's because it works. Try to play G minor over a Cmaj7. It sucks. So what he is saying is nothing new
someone show this man gram parsons
"superimposing"... Also known as a polychord??
His G minor "idea" only makes sense because he's not really playing C...hes playing Bb (or Gm7 without the root) and THEN TO C...so yes, G minor to C sounds like it works....uyyyy
This is all jerry garcia. Not elements of Jerry. You realize jerry was heavily influenced by country
I like this kid but you have to expect massive amounts of hate when you claim to "invent" a style thats been around for 50 years. Clarence White, Gram Parsons these guys truly invented the Cosmic Americana thing he would came off a lot better saying that.
Why you Americans got to reinvent the wheel, this was the first scale system invented by Pythagoras' student 3.5 THOUSAND years ago. You are just playing the G Dorian mode (named after the Dorian people's of ancient Greece). And that original "C" is actually C minor pentatonic dude, it's not C at all.
Shut up.
Brian Cullen wait a second are you saying that the “G minor” is really a G scale mode with a MINOR 3rd in it? Thanks SO much for clarifying that for everyone!
Also playing a C minor scale over a C major chord doesn’t change the reference harmony. He’s not in G anything. He’s not in C minor. He’s in C major. Specifically, he’s arpeggiating a C9 chord (C with a Bb and D), while trying to explain it in a way that’s accessible to people that aren’t stalking around UA-cam flexing their theory to seem superior.
As American writer Ernest Hemingway pointed out, anyone who uses erudition or education against others hasn’t any of their own...
@@joemanez5290 you made three errors. The cute quote really is not very intelligent, I guess it's one of those things that attracts certain people.
@@jerrymorganjr just clean the drool when you leave thanks.
Brian Cullen you’re missing the real point. But I bet you look nice in that stuffed shirt you’re wearing...
The kid sounds good. He is jacked and in a good place. But, he's still wet behind the ears. I don't know if he was trying to be funny while boasting. I think he needs a little deep dive into history, and a bit more music theory. He'll be okay; give him some room.
Awful phrasing so robotic
Great player. But damn, coining the term cosmic-country... god help us.
Fine player but let's pump the brakes on inventing anything new . . . Yikes
Sounds awful..
