I believe Hagrid had private tutelage by Dumbledore. And, of course, because Dumbledore was the master of the elder wand, repaired Hagrid's wand and helped him hide it inside of the pink umbrella. We see this in the first book with the fire, the pig tail, and when Harry asked, "How did you get here?" Hagrid's response, "I flew." That means he aporated: unlicensed but very proficient.
Pretty much exactly, Dumbledore probably slipped him the coursework after he was expelled and continued to train him. As an adult, he joined the order, giving him access to the most skilled wizards and their knowledge. We never hear about them training, but you could assume that a secret army dedicated to taking down the death eaters would indeed practice duelling amongst themselves.

I've been saying this for a long time. Hagrid would have been an incredibly powerful wizard if he had been allowed to continue his education. I don't think Tom Riddle saw his potential though. He was too arrogant and cruel to see the potential in other people, other than as a pawn. He could have tried to recruit him into his gang of followers but Hagrid was too kind of a person to join him.
Yes, I also think that Riddle was just in need of an escape goat and Hagrid and his animal loving tendency fits right into the scenario. Riddle even said so in The Chamber of Secrets that he thought that he was surprised no one figured out that Hagrid doesn't have the brain or the power (Riddles words not mine) to open the chamber. Riddle underestimated Hagrid.

Oh Merlin, Hagrid is the Kenpachi Zaraki of the Potterverse, insanely powerful despite being practically untrained. And we mostly don't think about it because Hagrid is practically the poster boy for gentle giant whereas Kenpachi is a bloodthirsty maniac who lives for the fight. Scary thought: Imagine if Voldemort had been strong enough during Book 1 to possess Hagrid by force instead of having to rely on the mediocre by all accounts Quirrel being a willing stooge. Now, I kind of want to read a fanfic where, certain Grindelwald cast the spell that killed Arianna, Dumbledore doesn't hesitate when Grindelwald starts doing the whole Dark Lord thing, their Famous Duel takes place years earlier, giving Dumbledore the political capital to be taken seriously when he says Tom Riddle framed Hagrid, leading to Hagrid getting to finish his education and Tom having to go on the run before taking his Newts to avoid having his Yew Wand snapped and not having his job with Borgins and Burkes to help him track down artifacts worthy of becoming his Horcruxes... And of course, Hagrid joining Dumbledore and Mad Eye as the order's biggest hitters during Voldemort's first reign of Terror.
