Thanks for guiding the students. I am an electrical engineer, major in electronics. My experience is in programming microcontrollers. Any one who is considering computer engineering as their major, let me tell you a ground reality. It has very little scope in Pakistan. There are many reasons why. Some I have given below,
*) you need to purcahse a dev board to do the prototyping in initial stages. Dev boards are pricy so companies create custom pcb boards to cut costs and that brings us to the next point.
*) you need to design a custon PCB that is bare minumum to your needs to cut costs in later stages; PCB Fabrication, components cost, component assembly cost.
*)Applications of such systems are in military equipments, medical devices, and embedded devices -- a digital alarm clock with many features, for example. As you can see, all these things are physical in nature. Therefore
it requires heavy investments compared to merely building software applications. You also need mechanical design engineers.
*) Normally heavy investment should mean the reward is also greater. But No. In order to compete with international market, your product needs to be extremely good at multitude of things like Quality of PCB, Quality of components, Good PCB design practices, appropriate Electromagnetic compatibility, innovative idea, resource optimized software, and the solution should be the cheapest. Mostly companies are not able to compete at international level. All thanks to our neigbour china. As a result they provide very specific solution and are unable to step into consumer electronics market. Hence they don't earn much money.
*) Very few companies are doing development in Pakistan because of obvious reasons explained earlier -- too much risk, too little reward.
*) Getting remote opportunities is extremely hard because you have to debug problems by hooking oscilloscope or logic analyzer to the hardware to figure out issues. In other words, you have to be onsite to do most of the work.
*)Getting started is difficult. You don't just open youtube, download necessary tools, and start practicing. You need real hardware.
*) Also, lower your salary expectations. Like expect around 80k to 100k after three years of experience.
*) Last but not the least. If you are granted an opportunity to work on technology you have never worked before. Like you work 3 years on microcontrollers such as esp family, AVR, stm32 arm, are good at concurrent programming using rtos, have a track record of delivering projects on time and are asked to work on FPGA based system. Prepare yourself to receive a 40k offer. Because if you won't take it, somebody else will. You need to prioritize learning for a very long period inorder to get good financial outcomes.

@@recluze Got in a situation where my name wasn't included in the CS Merit list but I was eligible for Computer Engineering. Mostly in such situations, the students are instructed to make a decision and submit the admission fees to reserve a seat. Did a basic research in the short time where people misguided me that there is no major difference between the two degrees. Also if you are comparing the courses of the degrees, I would say ignore the courses of the first 4 semesters as these courses are almost same eg Report writing, Communication skills etc. Also there is a Programming Fundamentals course in both the degrees but the Engineering students are taught C,CPP whereas the same course in CS offers an opportunity to learn programming languages used in software development.

Another important thing to consider, don't fall for the trap of electable courses. Universities include tons of electable courses related to CS, however once you are in senior semester you realize that those courses are not offered since most of the the faculty members are Electrical Engineers as described in the video.

Don't want to misguide anyone but I am third year computer system engineering student at DUET and I have zero interest in hardware courses and majority students of my department like me I don't why but mostly students like software side of computer science or engineering I have met many alumnis of my department and almost all of them are working in software industry not in hardware and believe me 90 percent of the universities professors has no connection with industry in Pakistan there is huge industry academia gap so keep in mind if you take admission in computer science or computer system engineering or computer engineering or any field you will have to work hard on your own and you will have to develop your skill set and there are tons of resources available on UA-cam or internet if you depend on your university so believe me you will waste your 4 years of graduation and after graduation you will not be able to get an entry level job 90 percent universities are useless in Pakistan only few are good so the main point is that it doesn't matter you do computer system engineering or computer science or software engineering in the end you will have to learn skills. Skills are most important and your skills will help you to get job.
Don't be confuse I know your first priority will be computer science or software engineering but believe me I am computer system engineering student 70 to 80 percent courses are same if you have a chance to get admission in computer system engineering or so don't miss after 1 or 2 years of admission you will think it's almost same.

The video was really helpful. As a fresh computer science graduate from an affiliated college in 2023, I was always unsure about the major differences between the fields, and your explanation clarified a lot.
I’m particularly interested in data science and machine learning rather than web or mobile app development. I completed my final year project in machine learning, and over the past year to year and a half, I’ve dedicated a significant amount of time to this field. However, I haven’t been able to secure a job yet.

      a) Learn basic discrete mathematics well. You need to be fluent with the concepts of sets etc. I suggest a book called "How to prove it" by Velleman. It's dense but it's essential.
      b) Get a good crypto course. There's one on coursera by University of Maryland I think.
      c) Follow large security conferences. I suggest CCS, S&P, Usenix Security, Euro S&P to begin with. Also keep up with blackhat and defcon (but just for information).
      d) Get a really good understanding of Assembly, Architecture, OS and DevOps. You can look at my OS course for a brief intro. I have some security stuff in there as well.

Also you recommend making projects and posting them there as well. How can I get project ideas? After watching your ITC playlist, I'm unsure what projects I can create with this knowledge. The same goes for the OOP playlist. Why am I struggling to come up with project ideas? The whole theme of itc Playlist is that you have to focus on solving problem not on particular techstack same goes for personal website your objective is to get a website how you do it doesn't really matter people generally go with wordpress beacuse it requires very little effort but if you want you can code it the motives of web technologies sir has stated is to understand the big picture of computer science and see how things work together you understand the core subjects such as os networking you can definitely use them for build your website but that's not the motives first clearly understand the motive than majority of questions will automatically disappear for projects as itc is not development course its a fundamentals course to get you started with programing and you will build on top of these to do development all cs courses build on top of each other for projects you typically need a gui Library in which ever language you are working in such as javafx in in java tkinter or turtle in python sfml, opengl, vulkan etc in cpp if you don't know one it doesn't matter firstly start with console based application and when you get comfortable move to gui but don't spend much time on gui except cpp if you want to go in graphic type of thing for projects ideas you can start with basic lms or hotel management take a look at UA-cam projects for your course it will help you get started there's a website called javatpoint it has simple project ideas implementation is mainly in java but you can get ideas from it and code in language you prefer

Don't you think characterizing Computer Engineering solely as hardware is a bit misleading? This implies that the focus is **ONLY** on designing analog circuits, digital ICs, or using HDLs to create logic circuits. However, Computer Engineering is an interdisciplinary field with a much broader scope than just hardware. For example, it also makes you eligible for software jobs, especially in areas close to the hardware, such as firmware, also known as bare metal programming. Additionally, embedded systems are a significant part of the field and are themselves very broad. Other than that there is IoT which is a growing field nowadays.
A thing to notice here is that most of the CS students don't qualify for these domains due to their lack of eelctronics knowledge.
Also, your introduction implied that Computer Engineering is a new field, which isn't accurate. Berkeley's EECS is well-known and has been around for many years. MIT also offers an EE+CS program (recently renamed to Electrical Engineering with Computer Science Applications) that is quite famous and has a curriculum similar to Computer Engineering.

If someone is interested in going into CE (and they know what they want), it's not a new field and not even an outdated one. It's just that its job market is, let's just say, a lot more restrictive.
And you are right that CS actually came from EE but that's a long while back. My point is only to make sure that students know what they are getting into. Appreciate your detailed comment. Thanks!

Hello, I hope you are doing well.
I have a lot of confusion right now. So I am a pre medical student ( forced into medical coz of some conditions ), but I generally like programming. My hobby is android app development. I gave NUST entry test, I did score well but it seems so that they have replaced one of their BS CS section with BS AI, means one less CS section and really high merit of BS CS ( I might not get in it ).
The other option I have right now is to go for BS AI, I've seen ur video and also checked the course, 5 out of 7 semesters are same. My question is, what to do now? I don't have any other uni, so my only option is to go for BS AI. I definitely will do a lot of programming as a hobby along the university so I am sure I'll be very fine in the skills part.

Firstly it's not necessary to go for good uni you can go for average one if you got cs their in case of ai being only option do explore other fields as well specially web and game all purpose of sir suggestion is not to limit your opportunities as you said when both curriculum is same why to just tag them differently why didn't go for cs and take electives of your niche but if you do take ai do cover breadth best of luck for future

@@recluze But the problem is, most of the universities have concluded their admission process. Now I can only wait to see if I get selected in BS CS or not in NUST. In case I don't get selected in BS CS, I will have to go for BS AI. Should I go for gap year? Or should I cover the extra CS courses along with BS AI?

If you do end up in BS AI, I wouldn't recommend a gap year. Just go with what you have and make the best of it. Make sure you cover all the stuff that is missing. Keep us posted in the comments as you proceed with your degree. Inshaallah it will work out great either way.
