I've been working in the industry for more than 5 years and trust me this is very important to understand I see a lot of newbies they want to jump high while missing the basics. So many software engineers are out there literally destroying the basics of software integrity. Recently I was working in the company and the top management of Software Engineers decided to switch to micro service architecture what they did was they broke down the application into the number of portals they were providing, they even had the same number of databases and all of these services were conceptually strongly dependent on each other. All of their databases were having duplication of data and if one update was to be done that was supposed to trigger updates in all the databases. Eventually the project was unable to be managed and was shut down by the investor that project was providing $750,000 annually to that company and after a few months the entire company closed down.

Yesterday I showed your video to a first semester student, who had taken admission in BSSE, it's his first semester and he wasn't clear about the difference between two fields. After watching your counselling video, He decided to change his degree from BSSE to BSCS. insha'Allah may be he might've done it today. (Luckily it's his first week, so the university allows him to change.) It was not possible without this video to explain it to him because the majority of the videos present on UA-cam don't make enough sense. Your videos are helping us in Karachi.

Point taken Sir, great video. one major issue in specialized is that teachers aren't available as sir said. but sir there is one thing I'm doing Bs Data science but four semesters are same like CS, even we have study coal , data structures , oop , dld and all cs core subjects. The reason I choose this is core courses are same but can't choose electives other then data science. and the other reason is this degree is 5 to 6 lac cheaper then computer science

Yeah I do agree (to some extent), you talk real and major of your points about our education system are correct though. But I ve a conflict with you while comparing SE and CS. I am an SE student and I think what you are saying about SE, is not majorly correct! Currently done with my finals of 6th semester. From the very start of my degree, I was taught to code. As a software engineer(to be) I ve written code in multiple languages and made projects, and Algorithms? I am done with that too. Yeah that ISE(Intro to SE) thing you might be right, a little bit. Those courses were too early because of education system or whatever. CS people are just taught to code. Just to code? all that? One of my friend is in NUCES FAST isb campus. He is a good student but he only knows how to code, no knowledge in SQA or ST or any kind of software management. They can just do little bit of documentation of their code, basically of what a developer is capable. On the other hand I can code too, moreover I can use my knowledge given to me as an SE student, of designs, patterns, architecture etc etc(to code efficiently). CS people are done here but we have options of SQA, ST and any other software management skill we were taught. We can cope with them. Lately I ve done internship with defense, as their SQA team member. Because I ve got the benefit of using tools and writing software documents. Can CS guy do that? And currently I am doing AI project with my fellow SE student, who is working on adreno! I am an SE guy and involved in development of embedded system. Done with desktop applications, Mobile applications, and Web applications(part of my 6th sem). If you want to ask about black, white box testing. Ask it from a guy who is working in industry and not from the one who is applying for teaching. Teachers only know how to teach not to implement. Even I can answer this simple question because I know how to do BB testing using its techniques, it is part of my course (ST). My SE degree made me confident enough that If I have to use any new tech, I simply need 15 to 20 days and BOOM! I am in! Moreover, for quality assurance, testing and management, I am present too. I know the tools, I know how to create software artifacts. SE is an engineering degree while CS is not.(Farq prta hai, ye PAKISTAN hai). If you want to work with any Govt. organization(NESCOM, NESPAK), they need SEs not CSs. Even in Pakistan army, quota only for SEs. (Correct me If i am wrong, last time I researched and these are my results). Conclusion: An SE guy can replace CS one while CS one cannot.
I'm glad you've had a good experience with SE. I sincerely hope all SE students get a similar experience. I strongly urge any SE people viewing this video to read through your comment and make sure they follow a similar path. That way, they success with their SE career and I would be all the more happy for them. About your comments: a good CS/SE student should have experience with SQA/Testing/Design/Software Architecture. If they don't do that, it's bad regardless of the program. And every graduate, regardless of their major, should be able to learn a new tool/tech in 15 to 20 days. That should be a given. My point is only that a majority (not all) of SE teachers don't focus on that. If SE was taught the way it should be taught, I would have no problem with it. You would agree though that the curriculum set by HEC is lacking in many respects. Just to give an example, the subject of requirements engineering doesn't even mention TDD. @@recluze Yeah, I do agree with you. It all depends on teacher. Not even going to talk about HEC. I remember TDD(Test Driven Development) because I had a presentation on this topic. I might say I am lucky because My SC, SQA, SRE, ST teachers all are from industry and they taught me tools and industry standards to cope with these.

The only advice I can give is to spend some time trying to learn deen (as with anything else). There are quite a few resources out there but you have to be sure to follow someone authentic, not just anyone. I recommend checking out alburhan.org. Many young students have told me about getting benefit from their programs.
Salam Sir, Hoping You're Doing Fine, Sir I was Comparing these Two (CS&SE) Extensively, Course of COMSATS, and sir I watched all the videos read all the articles related to these two, and then when i compared the courses on a paper, I found that in those technical subjects (Difference)(All other subjects were same) CS was Providing 1. Theory of Automata 2. Des. & analysis of Alog 3. Comp Const. 4. Robotics 5. Comp Archit. On the Other Hand SE was providing 1. Obj Orien. S.E 2. Soft Req Engg. 3. Soft Quality Engg. 4. Soft Des. & Arch. 5. Soft Project Management 6. Software Testing 7. Data Science (A.I, M.L, WebTech, Info Sec, Micro Proc(electives) ,Data Str, and other Core Computing subjects are common in both) and I've heard alot about Jobs in Data Science, Soft Testing, Quality Engg, Project Management etc whose subj are found only in SE, On the other hand, The Subjects Diff in CS Doesn't Seem to be as Much Rewarding as SE. (CORE COMPUTING SUBJECTS ETC ARE SAME IN BOTH) That's what I've concluded, (heard the teachers for S.E and C.s are also used interchangeably) Need your Suggestion Direly. Apologies for late response. Been under the weather a bit. The points you mention are quite valid. I do agree that there is little difference in CS and SE and many faculty members are also shared. This is the same in my institute as well. My point is only that the differences are not useful in most cases. Let's take SQA as an example, It's a subject of utmost importance. I tell all my students to learn the concepts of QA (in fact from the very first semester). However, when it's taught as a course, it's mostly (not everywhere but in most places) taught from a purely theoretical perspective with lots of figures and case studies. We held job interviews a while back and only 2/23 SE PhD holders .. yes, PhD holders .. could answer my simple question, "How do I actually start doing black box testing for my software? What tools do I use and what code do I write for testing?". You will agree that this is a bad situation. We didn't hire any of those people but many universities will. And these people will teach somewhere. If you are in a good university as a faculty, you automatically feel all teachers are competent. It's not the case in all universities and even in "good universities", not all courses are taught well. Another example would be Assembly Language. In HEC's SE curriculum, there is no Assembly. I don't see how a software engineer can make informed decisions about the software stack when they have no knowledge of the foundations. I had SE students reach the OS course and I had trouble explaining even interrupts to them because they didn't have the concepts straight. On the other hand, if you go into CS and just learn SQA on your own, you get the best of CS and you get the benefit of SE as well without having to waste too much time and risking bad teachers. Hope that made sense.
Hi, ive applied to comsats this year and i had sufficient merit for CS but due to certain misunderstandings and familial pressure i chose SE as my 1st preference and CS as my 2nd preferance. After thoroughly thinking , I've concluded that whatever be it , i want to pursue CS . Is there any chance i can opt for CS when the merit lists display ? Can i change / shift from SE to CS in comsats (keeping in mind the classes will start within a month or so ). Kindly provide your input on this , will be looking forward to your reply .

I have covered this in detail in my "How to Approach Learning" playlist. I give a detailed plan on what you should be learning to put your skills to real world use (and of course, eventually start earning from them). Robotics is 50% computer science. As soon as you have the hardware, you need CS to do something interesting with it. So, my answer would still be the same: unless you have a very good university dedicated to robotics, I would still recommend a CS program.
Data Science is just like Excel Sheet work. Using different formulas to extract the result and generate different colorful graphics and illustrations. They have not any idea of interpreting the results.
That's true in most cases. There are good problems in DS but people run away from them because it requires a lot of effort to understand the issues of scale. For anyone interested, check out the PyData stack.

W.S. You will have to pass at least two calculus courses in any CS degee but that's about it. You can work perfectly fine in almost all CS fields if you don't remember any calculus after you finish getting a passing grade in that subject. I have exactly the same opinion. In fact, it's now supported by more evidence. That's why I haven't made this video again. The only thing I would like to add is that if you can't get into CS, SE is ok but don't go for a degree in AI, DS or CyberSec. (If you're interested, you can always work on these areas within your CS degree.)

As far as I know, CE focuses more on hardware side. I honestly don't know how that is going to be useful in the current market. Maybe there are some opportunities but I'm not aware of them. Please do ask some people specialized in CE what opportunities are available for this field's graduates.

I don't comment on specific universities. However, a good general rule is that if someone makes a broad statement such as "there's more implementation in SE", you should ask them to give you names of some courses which have these implementations and what specific stuff is being covered. If it really is the case that code is not made second-class citizen in a program, SE should be just as good as CS and switching would not be necessary.

W.S. Personally, I would prefer BS IT over BS in DS. BS IT is typically "equivalent" to BS CS but we can't be sure about equivalence of BS DS until HEC makes some decisions about it in the future when some batches graduate.

BS (AI) will have many subjects related to AI but (a) there will hardly be anyone competent to teach it (with only a few exceptions) .... and (b) You can always learn those topics you are interested in on your own online or get your department to offer an elective. For example, if they are offered "Deep Learning" and you find out the teacher is very good, just ask the department to have that teacher offer you a "Deep Learning" elective in the next semester. Best of both worlds!

I have an argument which I would really prefer if you cleared it out, What I've been told and I actually did research with surveys, that software engeering is more preferable because its mainly focused on programming and software related stuff more whereas in CS, Its hardware also which I don't want. I want pure programming, so in that sense, Is SE a better option at Bachelors level?
Dude same here. I also want pure programming & I never ran away from code. I did also hear the same thing but the best way of selecting a ryt path for urself is just to not hear anyone blindly & to trust just on ur own research. What U should do is to chk the prospectus of ur desired university & analyse the courses & curriculum of that specific degree U wanna pursue, then just honestly listen to ur heart what U actually wanna learn in upcoming 4 yrs of ur life.

FAST is a good University overall for IT Subjects but others are not as considered as FAST for CS.... If someone is doing a bachelor's in cyber security he should be able to have knowledge about cyber security only. Why would he need alot of knowledge about things he doesn't need?. If he has chosen cyber security that means he needs to know about that specific field only. If a person with bachelor's in cyber security has knowledge only about cyber security then what's wrong in it? He chose that specific field to study that and be good in that only. Why would he need a broad knowledge about things he's never gonna implement??
I also suggested that our Council should offer the specialization field of AI DS SE in the 6th to 8th semesters of the BSCS program instead of starting a completely different degree. But universities have some political motives for accommodating extra staff and teachers in new programs and increasing the number of students.
Exactly. The introduction of these programs is motivated not by academics or market need but due to some other reason. And the students will be the one who pay the price in the long run.

I've been working in the industry for more than 5 years and trust me this is very important to understand I see a lot of newbies they want to jump high while missing the basics. So many software engineers are out there literally destroying the basics of software integrity.
Recently I was working in the company and the top management of Software Engineers decided to switch to micro service architecture what they did was they broke down the application into the number of portals they were providing, they even had the same number of databases and all of these services were conceptually strongly dependent on each other. All of their databases were having duplication of data and if one update was to be done that was supposed to trigger updates in all the databases. Eventually the project was unable to be managed and was shut down by the investor that project was providing $750,000 annually to that company and after a few months the entire company closed down.

Yesterday I showed your video to a first semester student, who had taken admission in BSSE, it's his first semester and he wasn't clear about the difference between two fields. After watching your counselling video, He decided to change his degree from BSSE to BSCS. insha'Allah may be he might've done it today.
(Luckily it's his first week, so the university allows him to change.)

one major issue in specialized is that teachers aren't available as sir said.
but sir there is one thing I'm doing Bs Data science but four semesters are same like CS, even we have study coal , data structures , oop , dld and all cs core subjects.
The reason I choose this is core courses are same but can't choose electives other then data science. and the other reason is this degree is 5 to 6 lac cheaper then computer science

Yeah I do agree (to some extent), you talk real and major of your points about our education system are correct though. But I ve a conflict with you while comparing SE and CS. I am an SE student and I think what you are saying about SE, is not majorly correct! Currently done with my finals of 6th semester. From the very start of my degree, I was taught to code. As a software engineer(to be) I ve written code in multiple languages and made projects, and Algorithms? I am done with that too. Yeah that ISE(Intro to SE) thing you might be right, a little bit. Those courses were too early because of education system or whatever.
CS people are just taught to code. Just to code? all that? One of my friend is in NUCES FAST isb campus. He is a good student but he only knows how to code, no knowledge in SQA or ST or any kind of software management. They can just do little bit of documentation of their code, basically of what a developer is capable. On the other hand I can code too, moreover I can use my knowledge given to me as an SE student, of designs, patterns, architecture etc etc(to code efficiently).
CS people are done here but we have options of SQA, ST and any other software management skill we were taught. We can cope with them.
Lately I ve done internship with defense, as their SQA team member. Because I ve got the benefit of using tools and writing software documents. Can CS guy do that?
And currently I am doing AI project with my fellow SE student, who is working on adreno! I am an SE guy and involved in development of embedded system.
Done with desktop applications, Mobile applications, and Web applications(part of my 6th sem).
If you want to ask about black, white box testing. Ask it from a guy who is working in industry and not from the one who is applying for teaching. Teachers only know how to teach not to implement. Even I can answer this simple question because I know how to do BB testing using its techniques, it is part of my course (ST).
My SE degree made me confident enough that If I have to use any new tech, I simply need 15 to 20 days and BOOM! I am in! Moreover, for quality assurance, testing and management, I am present too. I know the tools, I know how to create software artifacts.
SE is an engineering degree while CS is not.(Farq prta hai, ye PAKISTAN hai). If you want to work with any Govt. organization(NESCOM, NESPAK), they need SEs not CSs. Even in Pakistan army, quota only for SEs. (Correct me If i am wrong, last time I researched and these are my results).
Conclusion: An SE guy can replace CS one while CS one cannot.

I'm glad you've had a good experience with SE. I sincerely hope all SE students get a similar experience. I strongly urge any SE people viewing this video to read through your comment and make sure they follow a similar path. That way, they success with their SE career and I would be all the more happy for them.
About your comments: a good CS/SE student should have experience with SQA/Testing/Design/Software Architecture. If they don't do that, it's bad regardless of the program. And every graduate, regardless of their major, should be able to learn a new tool/tech in 15 to 20 days. That should be a given.
My point is only that a majority (not all) of SE teachers don't focus on that. If SE was taught the way it should be taught, I would have no problem with it. You would agree though that the curriculum set by HEC is lacking in many respects. Just to give an example, the subject of requirements engineering doesn't even mention TDD.

@@recluze Yeah, I do agree with you. It all depends on teacher. Not even going to talk about HEC. I remember TDD(Test Driven Development) because I had a presentation on this topic. I might say I am lucky because My SC, SQA, SRE, ST teachers all are from industry and they taught me tools and industry standards to cope with these.

The only advice I can give is to spend some time trying to learn deen (as with anything else). There are quite a few resources out there but you have to be sure to follow someone authentic, not just anyone. I recommend checking out alburhan.org. Many young students have told me about getting benefit from their programs.

(Difference)(All other subjects were same) CS was Providing
1. Theory of Automata
2. Des. & analysis of Alog
3. Comp Const.
4. Robotics
5. Comp Archit.
On the Other Hand SE was providing
1. Obj Orien. S.E
2. Soft Req Engg.
3. Soft Quality Engg.
4. Soft Des. & Arch.
5. Soft Project Management
6. Software Testing
7. Data Science
(A.I, M.L, WebTech, Info Sec, Micro Proc(electives) ,Data Str, and other Core Computing subjects are common in both) and I've heard alot about Jobs in Data Science, Soft Testing, Quality Engg, Project Management etc whose subj are found only in SE, On the other hand, The Subjects Diff in CS Doesn't Seem to be as Much Rewarding as SE. (CORE COMPUTING SUBJECTS ETC ARE SAME IN BOTH) That's what I've concluded, (heard the teachers for S.E and C.s are also used interchangeably) Need your Suggestion Direly. Apologies for late response. Been under the weather a bit. The points you mention are quite valid. I do agree that there is little difference in CS and SE and many faculty members are also shared. This is the same in my institute as well.
My point is only that the differences are not useful in most cases. Let's take SQA as an example, It's a subject of utmost importance. I tell all my students to learn the concepts of QA (in fact from the very first semester). However, when it's taught as a course, it's mostly (not everywhere but in most places) taught from a purely theoretical perspective with lots of figures and case studies.
We held job interviews a while back and only 2/23 SE PhD holders .. yes, PhD holders .. could answer my simple question, "How do I actually start doing black box testing for my software? What tools do I use and what code do I write for testing?". You will agree that this is a bad situation. We didn't hire any of those people but many universities will. And these people will teach somewhere.
If you are in a good university as a faculty, you automatically feel all teachers are competent. It's not the case in all universities and even in "good universities", not all courses are taught well.
Another example would be Assembly Language. In HEC's SE curriculum, there is no Assembly. I don't see how a software engineer can make informed decisions about the software stack when they have no knowledge of the foundations. I had SE students reach the OS course and I had trouble explaining even interrupts to them because they didn't have the concepts straight.
On the other hand, if you go into CS and just learn SQA on your own, you get the best of CS and you get the benefit of SE as well without having to waste too much time and risking bad teachers.

Hi, ive applied to comsats this year and i had sufficient merit for CS but due to certain misunderstandings and familial pressure i chose SE as my 1st preference and CS as my 2nd preferance. After thoroughly thinking , I've concluded that whatever be it , i want to pursue CS . Is there any chance i can opt for CS when the merit lists display ? Can i change / shift from SE to CS in comsats (keeping in mind the classes will start within a month or so ). Kindly provide your input on this , will be looking forward to your reply .

I give a detailed plan on what you should be learning to put your skills to real world use (and of course, eventually start earning from them). Robotics is 50% computer science. As soon as you have the hardware, you need CS to do something interesting with it. So, my answer would still be the same: unless you have a very good university dedicated to robotics, I would still recommend a CS program.

That's true in most cases. There are good problems in DS but people run away from them because it requires a lot of effort to understand the issues of scale. For anyone interested, check out the PyData stack.

W.S. You will have to pass at least two calculus courses in any CS degee but that's about it. You can work perfectly fine in almost all CS fields if you don't remember any calculus after you finish getting a passing grade in that subject. For ca you should ask someone from that field for cs watch his ict Play list thats the starting point if you like it you can continue your learning switching might depends on many factors without their consideration none can suggest you so you can make the best decision

I have exactly the same opinion. In fact, it's now supported by more evidence. That's why I haven't made this video again. The only thing I would like to add is that if you can't get into CS, SE is ok but don't go for a degree in AI, DS or CyberSec. (If you're interested, you can always work on these areas within your CS degree.)

As far as I know, CE focuses more on hardware side. I honestly don't know how that is going to be useful in the current market. Maybe there are some opportunities but I'm not aware of them. Please do ask some people specialized in CE what opportunities are available for this field's graduates.

I am studying BS SE in FAST-NUCES KARACHI, but hamara or cs ka course same hi hai almost srf kch courses ka difference hai or as per our teachers implementation software engg. m ziada hoti hai kia mjhy switch krna chahiye?
I don't comment on specific universities. However, a good general rule is that if someone makes a broad statement such as "there's more implementation in SE", you should ask them to give you names of some courses which have these implementations and what specific stuff is being covered. If it really is the case that code is not made second-class citizen in a program, SE should be just as good as CS and switching would not be necessary.

W.S. Personally, I would prefer BS IT over BS in DS. BS IT is typically "equivalent" to BS CS but we can't be sure about equivalence of BS DS until HEC makes some decisions about it in the future when some batches graduate.

BS (AI) will have many subjects related to AI but (a) there will hardly be anyone competent to teach it (with only a few exceptions) .... and (b) You can always learn those topics you are interested in on your own online or get your department to offer an elective. For example, if they are offered "Deep Learning" and you find out the teacher is very good, just ask the department to have that teacher offer you a "Deep Learning" elective in the next semester. Best of both worlds!

I have an argument which I would really prefer if you cleared it out, What I've been told and I actually did research with surveys, that software engeering is more preferable because its mainly focused on programming and software related stuff more whereas in CS, Its hardware also which I don't want. I want pure programming, so in that sense, Is SE a better option at Bachelors level?
Dude same here. I also want pure programming & I never ran away from code. I did also hear the same thing but the best way of selecting a ryt path for urself is just to not hear anyone blindly & to trust just on ur own research. What U should do is to chk the prospectus of ur desired university & analyse the courses & curriculum of that specific degree U wanna pursue, then just honestly listen to ur heart what U actually wanna learn in upcoming 4 yrs of ur life.

I'm really confused at this point rn that whether should I choose BS Cyber Security in FAST Islamabad or BS CS in Bahria/Air/COMSATS Islamabad...
FAST is a good University overall for IT Subjects but others are not as considered as FAST for CS.... Is it really necessary to do my degree from FAST (CYS) or I should go for CS from one of the other three Universities?

First of all fast k jo subjects hain cys k wo same hy as that of cs first 2-3 semester therefore ap ko basics btai jayen gi chahy ap cs k lye ho ya cys k lye tou pehly semester tou same hgye baqi reh gye end k usmein apko koi na koi elective tou lena pry ga na agr ap cs krlo gy tou end py yeh advantage hy only k boht variety mil jaygi but at the same time cs field is getting very saturated every year. Or jahan tak bat scope ki cyber security boht bari field hy ismein boht opportunities hain agr ap kaam krny waly ho tou or next 4 years baad scope hoga kiu k every organisation needs a cyber securitist.

Sir kindly help me out if you read this, I am getting admission in Data Science in COMSATS and Computer Science in Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture (PMAS) (not very renowned in IT fields), please advice me does the university difference matter in my case if it does maybe I should consider Comsats first. Or Should I straight up go with PMAS?

@@ashuchaudhry345 I took a calculated risk and chose COMSATS because its 80% same course as CS, 95% similar if you choose AI as a track in CS. 5% is not a big difference to be worrying about. btw i never mentioned in my comment that I chose AI. are you in my batch??

If someone is doing a bachelor's in cyber security he should be able to have knowledge about cyber security only. Why would he need alot of knowledge about things he doesn't need?. If he has chosen cyber security that means he needs to know about that specific field only. If a person with bachelor's in cyber security has knowledge only about cyber security then what's wrong in it? He chose that specific field to study that and be good in that only. Why would he need a broad knowledge about things he's never gonna implement??
I also suggested that our Council should offer the specialization field of AI DS SE in the 6th to 8th semesters of the BSCS program instead of starting a completely different degree. But universities have some political motives for accommodating extra staff and teachers in new programs and increasing the number of students.
Exactly. The introduction of these programs is motivated not by academics or market need but due to some other reason. And the students will be the one who pay the price in the long run.

BSCS & BESE is purely based on Software based work & programming but BSCE, BECE & CSE is actually a combo of Hardware + Software but still there are more Software related courses.
