CHANEL Then vs Now: Why Has Chanel Changed? | A Guide to Karl Lagerfeld's & Virginie Viard's Chanel

  • In this video, I'll be covering the work of designers Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard for Chanel- one of the most significant and prominent fashion houses in the industry. With the shift in Chanel's imagery execution, I'll be breaking down the creative approaches of both designers, their visions, and aesthetics for a better understanding of how the designers have contributed to the house within each era. Along with this, I'll also be defining the elements that give the house it's passion, romance, sophistication, and feminine elegance that has made the brand synonymous with high fashion under both designers within their creative visions as they carry on the Chanel legacy.

    Spring 2022 just seemed like a collaboration with Forever 21. It seemed hastily thrown together with as many references to youth and trendiness as could be crammed in to every look. The antithesis of timeless - it was like every look was just on the cusp of going out of style right as the models were walking down the runway.

    I feel like Virginie's Chanel has fallen to the same hole as Louis Vuitton, Gucci and others, their looks are becoming even more cheap looking and they just keep catering to influencers. This is not even a matter of wanting them to remain exclusive to celebrities (hell to the no) and being against these brands trying to appeal to a broader demographic, but we all know that this is obviously not their intention; Chanel has increased their bag prices FOUR times in the middle of a pandemic, just for the sake of trying to be more "exclusive" and attempting to reach Hermes's status. Maybe I am just frustrated since Chanel is still the luxury brand I look up for the most, and I still love their chic, tweed adhering aesthetic, but the looks and the brand itself just keep disappointing year after year since Karl's gone.

    Virginie’s Chanel looks like forever 21 lol. I prefer Karl’s better. I feel like Virginie’s doesn’t look updated for this current generation like how Karl was able to do for generation x in the nineties. Her’s looks lazy and cheap instead of high fashion. The runway show where she attempted to try to bring back the nineties feel with the paparazzi was just tragic!

      Ya I preferred Lagerfeld's chanel too. Recently, I stopped shoppi ng at Chanel- or at least not as much as before, because for some reason, the price went up yet the desgins are becoming less classic and rather trendy. Oh, and the people who shop it bastardized it too -no offense, but you know it's time to stop something when these instagram girls and new money foreigners hop on it 🤡

      In my opinion, she doesn't have a feel for mixing colours, siluets, textures that Karl had. He had a very unique ability mixing many details without overdoing it. His creations were harmonious, eye pleasing, beautiful.

    I see she was the executer but the idea of everything and the artist was Lagerfeld. I saw him as highly creative, classy but sort of cold person. I see significant change in collection since he left. I admired Lagerfeld long years, because his work was minimalistic and certain way same time sophisticated. Because Gabriel Chanel was same tall as me and the Chanel dresses had respected her legacy and the need of petite ladies from the site of cut. Unfortunately Chanel is not addressing me these days.

      In my opinion ( that might be incorrect ) Maria Grazia had a strong improvement over the years. Instead in Virginie’s work I see the opposite. Her first collections were absolutely stunning but the it’s like she lost her creativity. Also considering that she is creative director since 2019 I think that she had the time settle in.

    Well, Virginie has been unofficially designing for a very long time before taking over so the only real change its she's official now. And while fashion has to change, the core of the original designer, the reason why Lagerfeld and Virginie had and have their jobs, must remain true to the original designers vision and updated to the times according to the founders vision always, people who buy a brand because they like it not because they think it brings them status buy it for what the vision is, change that, might as well change the name.

    What amazes me about Chanel is how in nowadays culture where everyone is walking on eggshells and everyone is a potential target for the wrath of saying something no longer considered acceptable much less doing something, yet, Coco Chanel was an infamous traitor to her own nation by being a Nazi collaborator and would put Ana Wintour to shame in the nasty department, is not shunned as a typhoid Mary yet John Galliano lost his job for allegedly insulting a couple of girls while intoxicated using a Jewish slur and lost his job and reputation without blinking. Natalie Portman seems to forget to be even more outraged at Chanel than she was at Galliano, after all, an alledged insult vs proven collaboration with genocide you'd think she'd die before associating herself with Chanel after demanding Galliano be fired from Dior or she was out of her Dior Contract, Chanel wasn't under the influence while spying for the Nazis, she was perfectly aware of what she was doing and saying ( she was a notorious homophobe among other "traits"), but not a thing happened until today. Is it because Galliano is a man so its okay to eviscerate him and she's was a woman so she gets a free pass?

    • @MC-xw1pm
      @MC-xw1pm 2 роки тому +1

      Coco Chanel is long dead, I'm sure that's part of it. What ever she did wrong, she's not making any money off her brand now.

    • @makdle66
      @makdle66 2 роки тому +2

      @@MC-xw1pm What she did is called high treason to her nation aside from collaborating with a monster. My point is that nowadays nobody can even say anything by the name it actually is because everyone is automatically offended, and Galliano got fired for allegedly making a comment, yet the brand name, style and legacy of a Nazi homophobic spy is not questioned. It's not because she's not alive as nowadays even statues of long dead people have been taken down because of their past actions when alive. So I ask myself if its a double standard because she's a woman, considering the fact that women seldom if ever lose their jobs or get as much trouble as men do over the same issues or worse as in this two cases of Galliano and Chanel.
