What makes a Supermodel Special? | The "It" Factor Analysis
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- In this video, we will be delving into the glamorous supermodel age of the 90s. When many think of fashion, a specific image comes to mind, a vibrant runway and beautifully crafted clothing by the world's most prestigious fashion designers. Showcased on captivating, charismatic, magnetic women with character and class to match the designer’s aesthetic vision. Women who just seem to have “it.” The factor goes beyond a person's appearance, transcending physical beauty to a radiance, which begs the question: what is the "it" factor?
We will be looking into the history of the supermodels from the big six to the photographers who defined the imagery of the supermodel, the aesthetics of the supermodel age to see how this was channeled in their looks, and the style as well as beauty practices that contribute to the “it" factor presence. With this, we will develop an understanding of the production to create as well as the unique factors the supermodels offered, resulting in the poised, alluring aura with such great magnitude.

People need to realize that today’s models are “boring” because that’s what the industry wants. Every 10 or so year a new walk, a new look and a new style takes over the industry. 90s modeling wasn’t like 70s modeling just like today’s modeling isn’t like the 90s
If the industry wanted the 90s walk that’s what it would be today, but it isn’t and that’s for a reason
That's true and most people know that. But it's still boring. 90s models brought the clothes alive.
a few months ago, a came across a video comparing Kendall Jenner and Naomi Campbell. it was cruel. i am a mother now and made it a point to share this intent with my daughter. it's not that Kendall is not beautiful or can't walk.... they are not the same. period. women were more celebrated in the past for what womanhood is intrinsically about. no one can change the age they were born to. all we can do is remain true to who we really are. and if we succeed, we will be remembered. it. is. that. simple.
Love the 90s fashion runways and supermodels of the 90s!
They are also trying too hard top be "diverse" meaning they have far too many models who are not there because their looks tell story, and enhance the vision of the designer, but because they are big, or non white, or not feminine.
It's also because back then the models the supers were getting more attention and talk then the actual clothes. They don't want the models taking away from the clothing. That's why generally runway models aren't as attractive as commercial and editorial models. This is how it was when I was modeling from 1999-2009.
The effort you put in your videos leaves me in awe!
Agree! This is the kind of fashion content we need on UA-cam!
@@lt5371 yep
In the late 1980s supermodels ruled the world of runways, fashion magazines in the millennium, or minerals of celebrities covered in fashion magazines, until an average of different types of people ruled of self beautiful.
What do you mean by the average of different types of people ruled self beauty?
We will never have supermodels like this ever again for two simple reasons: social media and nepotism. These models gained the notariety and fame themselves, because they genuinely have "it." Not because of how many followers they have on IG or because their parents gave them a leg up into the industry or have a famous last name. These women actually HAVE IT. The models today didn't need to prove anything to get the fame they now have. And what's sad is the models today who may have "it," may not get the same attention as other more famous models, simply because they don't have the same following or famous family.
THIS!!!
You are so so correct
I miss the 80s-90s. Nowadays runway models are boring. Instagram influencers are generic and too sexualized . It blends together
Why cuz the models don’t fit the Eurocentric and fat phobic beauty standards anymore 🙄
Many influencers also look the same!
@@madisonj5136 umm no
@@madisonj5136 yasmeen, christy and naomi are women of colour
@@madisonj5136 no…
The reason why models exotic/ brown skin tone exist is all because of Yasmeen, she literally paved the way for all of them but I assure there would never be another Yasmeen.
Not you forgetting black women.
@@chinnyb4942 I’m not, I’m just speaking about my role model and it isn’t necessary to mention as that’s already been discussed but Yasmeen has started to get the credit that she deserves now.
Naomi, Iman, Beverly Johnson, Katoucha literally paved the way for black models. They’re awesome and so is the new wave of models like Imaan, Adut, Adut. They’re have a tremendous amount of presence and slay the catwalk.
Lmaooo I guesssssss
@@alright14 Gotcha! I'm assuming you're probably South East Asian, and you guys don't get much representation. When I hear brown, I automatically assume black women, but you're definitely right. Yasmeen was truly a classic and I actually like her walk more than naomi! Happy she's getting her due.
I loved Yasmeen! "Brown skin tone" is mostly synonymous with Black heritage but I get what you mean.
The problem with models today is that many of the big name models are all rich, nepo kids who did not have to work for anything. They get booked not bc they have "it", but bc they have a recognizable family name.
@Lizzie Jimenez Well that’s not really true, some of the big models these days are like adut Akech, ElsaHosky, Barbara Valente, vittoria certti, Anok Yai, irina shayk and more- These models never started off rich, they just worked hard for years and been on many runways, magazines, commercials, etc. Kendall and Gigi and Bella hdid aren’t really good examples, these days people base off everything off of gigi and kendall and make up silly stereotypes about models. I do admit Instagram models are not so talented, but kendall and Gigi and Bella hadid are great models, sure they might had started with fame but they improved over the years
@@janelleslayss Kendall? Really? 😂
Models will never be the same sadly. The models from back then had that "it" factor. You wanted to know more about them.
It was ALL MARKETING, they were made to look like that image and made to look elite and out of reach from normal people. They even made up Iman’s story when she first came out, they said she was discovered in Africa as if she was from the jungle and not the daughter of noble parents
I love how at 4:26 she mentioned my favorite fashion designer Gianni Versace because he helped create the 90s supermodels, they all said they would not be half as famous without Gianni Versace. ❤️
Models in the 90s looked like women. Each one of them looked different than the others, each was unique. Now they all look the same and more like teenagers than women.
True
A supermodel - when the model gets more attention than the clothes they're wearing
Supermodels drew the eye in, they caught attention which is why they were good at their job, people would look at them and they would bring the clothes to life. They said this in the video
@@akatie888 I don't care but thanks anyways

Tatjana Patitz was in the original 5 in Vogue back in 1989 and in George Michael's video for Freedom '90. Claudia and Kate came later!
Yes, Tatiana Patitz was so beautiful and an original! The video is focused more in on the mid 90s age for the defined aesthetic people look back on today. I mixed some older visuals in the to show the origins 🖤
Though Tatjana was on the original Vogue cover and George Michael's video, money-wise and recognition she was behind Claudia and Kate.
I have written a very lengthy and detailed article that analyzes the beauty of Tatjana Patitz, and why she, in my opinion, is one of the greatest supermodels of all time, next to Linda Evangelista. Let me know if you want to read it. I can't post the link in the comment section, since YT has deleted my comments several times if I put the link.

Back to the Eurocentric beauty standards and fat phobic standards. Yeah no thanks
@@madisonj5136 lol fat phobic standard? Lol that can only come from America and twitter. The 90s were a great era especially for black pop star and model. If the beauty standard are more eurocentric this is maybe because the majority of the population of USA and Europe is white, dumb*ss

There were a few supermodels who grew up in the same area as me. (East San Francisco Bay Area) Christy Turlington (I worked with her sister Kelly, in a department store), Kara Young, and Shana Zadrick. (Shana was a Guess Girl, after Claudia Schiffer) And my good friend in high school; his sister Marita was a very well known model in the 80s/90s too. She was contracted to Yves Saint Laurent at the beginning of her career. She also appeared in Benneton ads. She was also a competitive synchronized swimmer growing up. And she’s appeared in movies, tv series, and commercials doing synchronized swimming.
The "it" factor of these models from the 80s/90s/2000s was that they did not look like the average woman.
Being a “model” doesn’t hold as much clout as it use to ,IMO. Too much Nepotism, instagram models, plus size models, and some down right homely models. Its like they are dragging just anyone off the street and snapping their picture. I liked perusing magazines and admiring the high cheekbones and willowy figures that graced the pages.
What’s wrong with plus sized models ?
@@kewlcat361 ikr!? Fatphobic detected
what's wrong with plus sized models now?? this reeks of fatphobia
You didn’t have to big up plus size models, Precious Lee is one of the best models in the game right now.
sorry but plus sized models aren’t it…
Could you please do an episode on Mcqueen or Galliano like the YSL episode?
Looove that Cindy remarked that they’re not as perfect as we see in magazines, and that was back then
9:08 she breathtaking the guy interviewing her was very rude and she was so classy.
It should have been the big 8 in my opinion. If you remember the naturally beautiful classy blond Karen Mulder and the graceful exotic Jasmeen Ghauri shone in more ways than one and of course not forgetting the unbelievably stunning Helena Christening with her curves and smouldering gaze, so I guess it should have been the big 9! The clothes really came alive on these stunning goddesses on or off the catwalk.
Loving this voice-over more. ✨ And the editing is on point as always! ♥✨
tiktok has more famous ladies than modeling industry at present... lets face it.. modeling has just became a thing of the past unlike then 90's ..Supermodels were like Goddess in the runway and magazines covers... they were paid millions to endorse a product and paid highly as much as 20,000usd in a days work...
"just by looking at her we wouldnt know she reads 10 books a month" wtf is that even supposed to mean
Gianni was a genius gone too soon. Rip
Now you only need a famous parent, you don't even have to be attractive
I think its telling that people can name more models from the early 90's than prominent designers. That's why designers pick clothes hangers for the runway and influencers for their campaigns, to balance that narrative.
Ask someone on the street who Naomi Campbell is and most will understand.....ask that same person who Claude Montana is.....
Naomi’s walk is divine
I am a supermodel. I carry all these traits except I was raised by poor immigrants. my style and personhood have been intentionally doing these things without realizing who I was and that is a supermodel. Designers of the world, Dress me!
One would think that there's not much to know about style but your videos shows how much depth there is. Thank you for your work ❤️ my personal favorite is Yasmeen and I love the make up and hair of the era!
Your videos are so informational and helpful addition to being so fun to watch ❤️
Hoping to see Jessica Pearson's style analysis soon ❤️❤️
I love your videos so much 💗 keep them coming!
You should do a psychology of fashion analysis on the film the virgin suicides
Born in 1991 here I grew up on them. Legendary women who taught us so much. Iconic days
A lot of these supermodels were either assaulted or slept around to get to the top. There isn't much of anything special about them. Look at Karen Mulder's life.
Maybe…but they were still above and beyond beautiful compared to any other models.
Has anybody remember Gia???
Finally a neutral, human voiceover
Million times better than Hadid sisters & Kendall...
OMG that Steven Meisel's Italian vogue cover with the 3supers didn't start the supermodel era... it's Vogue’s January 1990 cover by Peter Lindbergh featuring Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, and Christy Turlington PETER LINDBERG WAS THE ONE WHO COINED THE TERM SUPERMODEL!
I adore your video. I feel like it has really helped me discover who I am through fashion. I appreciate you and your edit skills.
Through your videos I always learn so much, thank you for your hard work!
yes!!! i’ve been waiting for an it girl video since your channel started
Christy turlington ist just the most beautiful woman ever ! I can’t !
Ikr. She has the most beautiful face ever but all of them are beautiful like goddess
Peter Lindbergh’s January Vogue UK cover and George Michael’s “Freedom! 90’” music video are what started the supermodels. This video fails to tell that part of history and all but cancels Tatjana Patitz who was part of “the big five.” History must be told accurately. I’m sure Kate and Claudia would agree.
This isn’t a history of the supermodel video. That dates back to 1891 and would be an entirely different video. This is covering the supermodel aesthetic (style, beauty, attitude as the thumbnail says) that is often referenced today
I applaud your vast knowledge. But there is a bias and inaccuracy in your narrative - in the name of style. No matter how much or how little history you share (it’s actually a lot in this video) there is incorrect information here. Facts are left out - which is irresponsible to those here to learn, and clear to those who know the truth. Can’t quite figure out why someone would go to such lengths to produce such a video, then all but cancel one of the key figures of that era of “Freedom! 90.” It doesn’t take away any achievements from Claudia or Kate to include Tatjana. I hope you can respect my opinion as I love this special era as much as you do.
I respect your opinion and can see how passionate you are on the subject as well as the love we share for the era. I appreciate comments like this so that viewers can learn more than what is purely in the videos on the channel. It is a UA-cam video and there is only so much to be included in the 10 minutes, so of course this cannot capture everything. I truly had no ill intent with leaving her out and it is a lot of work to produce, so I have to pick and choose what to focus on. As an image consultant I feel more comfortable teaching my area of expertise as I know I don’t know everything nor will I pretend to, I hope this is understandable.
Hi Alex. I know you are a big Tatjana Patitz fan. I have written a very lengthy but thoroughly analytical article that breaks down the beauty of Tatjana Patitz. If you would like to check it out, let me know. I can't post the link on this comment, since YT deletes links, since it falsely considers it spam comments.
I read your piece and really enjoyed your beautiful and descriptive writing about her fashion career and impact.
The super models nowdays look like video vixens.
This is my new favorite youtube channel 💞 Also I miss her voice from the older videos 😭
It's called the "IT factor" because it cannot be defined.
I think Eileen Ford coined the term?
A person can come from anywhere who just possess this ineffable quality to them which is, by default, different from anyone else.
Wish I has it, but I'm fine...
Thank you!!!!! I’m currently a model, on my way to supermodel status!!!!😍
Wow genuine question here is this an ai voice? The amount of effort put into script writing, editing and voice is really impressive!

My God, these women are gorgeous!🥰
Unrelated, but I have just realized I’ve never heard Kate Moss speak until now lol
she has the cutest voice and she’s really funny!!
They are men
Yasmeen did not have q beautiful face, of course she had unbelievable figure qnd grace. People should also admit models arr often striking without being beautiful.
Unfortunately means being sexually assaulted by the most powerful men & women in the industry, being labour exploited & complicit on other sexual crimes against other people. That is the lenght of being popular overnight if you come from a humble background and have no money nor degrees under your belly.
You work so hard your videos, they are an art work
Suzy Parker was the the first super model in the 1950’s followed by Twiggy in the 1960’s and Lauren Hutton in the 1970’s.

As a male model of the 1980s and 90s.. these specific MODELS were the Only models considered back then with X FACTOR...which we all aspired to be like ...not many models of color back then,so they were pioneer MODELS
Gisele Bundchen was the biggest top model ever 😘
Anna bayle walk..iconic..hailed.. by those who really know runway modelling.
I think Cindy was the worlds most beautiful woman.
One of the things I think have faded away is the model who becomes famous- rather now it’s important for a model to already to be famous to make waves
First comment🤗🥰
nice video, nice analysis, and they do stand out because they don't all try to look alike, contour alike and inject alike as those of today, BUT. When the 1st model talks about the museum, she says something stupid, and because she's so beautiful nobody notices. When NC is cocky( different than confident) and a bit mouthy, nobody cares becasue she's so beautiful,. it is REALLY about natural beauty, height( people notice tall people, and if Kate Moss hadn't been advertised as heavily when she won the lottery to be 'discovered', she would have and is now forgotten) youth and the rest is 'meh' but people are impressed because they project their awe of just beauty and youth to anything else.
This presentation looks interesting ,but it would be great if you took the music out so that we can properly hear what you are saying ,please concider, thanx
It is a gift from God by His grace. Grace means it's underserved and unearned.

90s supermodels were everything
I always wonder why people are fascinated by models. I find them literally repugnant - unhealthy looking (starved and pale) and dead-eyed (they have a look of vacancy or being drugged to the gills).
