To me i felt kinda sorry for her at times it seemed like everyone in her family had a unhealthy connection to her her Grandpa wanted to live his glory days through her her grandma wanted the little deputaunt and her mother wanted her to do everything she wasn't able to
I'm so glad to see a more sympathetic analysis of Rory's character! I think it's an authentic writing choice for a gifted kid lacking a sense of identity to spiral in college. There are so many deep-seated psychological roots that contributed to her downfall that I can't sit here and put 100% of the blame on Rory, when she was never given the tools or preparation to handle the "real world" and its trials. Anyway, thanks for this! I enjoyed the incorporation of wardrobe analysis, too.
To add on as a mom of teenagers during this time period most teenagers dressed the way Rory did in the first couple of seasons. It wasn’t about being serious or perfect the clothes were comfortable and practical.
LOVED this perspective! As a gilmore girls fan and psychology student, Rory's character is one I have strong feelings towards, both because I am her and I wish I wasn't. This was a very comprehensive view of who Rory is, and as unbiased as possible.
Same. My 'downfall' hasn't been so drastic, but the pressure of growing up with everyone exclaiming about how "brilliant" I am, to a mom who clearly wants me to do the things she didn't have the chance to do, was crushing till I just....let go.
@@no.6377 yes! It's great you had the guts to let go, I've been doing that too. I've been reshaping my life around much less concern for elitism and money and much more about love (for my work, for building a family, etc) and stability. I'm finding new value in me that I couldn't see if I continued seeing my life through my mother's eyes.
I find Emily Gilmore’s fashion the most interesting. Her St John knits are the uniform of the upper middle class society wife. When contrasted against to her coastal grandmother look in the remake, her clothes are almost another character. The iconic mother daughter fashion show where she dresses herself and Lorelei in matching St John pants suits was a great fashion moment. and her DAR meltdown was one of the greatest ever on tv. Explaining to the “trophy wife” why she’d never get in was classic.
I actually never watched Gilmore girls, but started watching it this fall. I remember my mother allways watching the show in the early 2000s. I was used to the sound and look of the show, but never knew the characters and plot line. Now I complety adore the show, and was truly stunned by the story of Rory. Amazing analysis as allways.
I have watched gilmore girls like 4 times all the way through. It’s the mistake of never not being important. yes she worked her butt off but is it really work if it’s what she loves to do? so she never realistically has to work to succeed. She never has to work at relationships because everyone just dawned over her, she never had to prove her talent because everyone was always blown away by how naturally talented she was. She never had to form a personality because she had her mother who did grow up fast and was helped out by kind hearted humans that cherished her and her daughter and she never had to change. Rory never had to be on her own or face adversity until she wasn’t told she was amazing. She never had to not be with the boy she liked because they always liked her back. And all this allowed her to be arrogant and entitled. She didn’t actually work hard she was told she worked hard because her hobbies were acedemic. Then when she needed to grab her ovum and go to work, she bailed, and her entire world crashed around her. I’ve personally been there. It got better. Mine was depression and stress and ptsd from deployment, not arrogance and entitlement, but my world still fell apart and I had to redirect who I was with other people and become a whole and complete person to myself and then to others. Everyone’s fashion choices reflect that when it comes to woman at least. The journey from girl to woman is WILD and society puts a lot of pressure on what we wear communicating to the world who we are, communicating to men if we are sexually available, communicating to strangers whether we are safe, communicating to others potential friendship, or whether we are just on our period or just had a baby…
This is beautiful, and thank you for the unbiased analysis. I see a lot of hate for Rory and her how her development went so it’s really nice to see something like this. Something that doesn’t vilify her for growing and making mistakes, but instead recognizing and explaining the events. Plus I loved the information with the clothes. I am going through a style change/crisis myself. I don’t know what to really wear anymore or how to style things for myself. And I’m scared to try things too out there for fear of being judged by friends and family. My interests are kinda in line with Rory’s light academia a little.
I do feel like the character of Rory would have been better suited for other careers (verse Journalism). The revival also didn’t help with her character development lol 😂 Loved the video ❤ a Lorelei analysis would be fantastic!
I think it could’ve. She loved journalism and she wanted to travel as well. Like that paper she did back in Yale about the secret society, she liked to discover new things or write in topics no else really did. I think if she got more experience and maybe even got help from a seasoned journalist, she could’ve done what she wanted. But I think her working for that company (I don’t remember what it was. But it was when they said she didn’t have the “stuff” basically for journalism) was a mistake. Yes it was a job, but it wasn’t something that’d challenge her. I think if she went out on her own and chased after the stories she wanted to whenever she wanted to would not only force her to take up that go getter attitude but also makes sure she wasn’t following in anyone’s direction but her own. She was a go getter, just not when she was also expected to listen and follow rules. She couldn’t just be a go getter in the meeting room, but in life as well.
For me she's lacking of the initiative a journalist must have, she's good at her job only when she's told what to do, that's normal in any job for the first years, but eventually we develop an opinion backed by experience.

The problem was Rory was always put in a pedestal as the bright angel child that could never do wrong, and that gave her the mentality that anything she does has to be right by default, one example of this is when she became the other woman by cheating with Dean instead of aknowledging that what she was doing was morally wrong she remained firm that because he was HER Dean 1st she had the right to him over his wife. Kids will have lots of friends through out their lives but they dont get that many parents to raise them right.
I could never agree on the part that she cheated with someone. She owed no loyalty to this woman she didn’t know and the one who was in the relationship was the guy not her
This is my first video of yours and fashion isn’t really a topic I’m interested in but I am seriously blown away by how interesting your analysis is on the characters! I was so into this video and I’m so impressed that you were able to pull so much information out of things I overlooked when I watched the show
I loved this video essay! The way you went through the entire original series and showing how her wardrobe reflected her character and her struggles was wonderfully done! I am so happy that I discovered your channel! :D
I loved the analysis and would love to see your take on Lorelai's journey. She was portrayed as working class but I think even my untrained eye spotted quite a few designer pieces? When the show came out I was Rory's age and related to her a lot while at the time of the remake I must have been Lorelai's age in the original show and related more to her when I was rewatching. I guess I spent a lot of my time with this show haha.
honestly i wore a school uniform and hated it so did most of my schoolmates. however it is really cool seeing uniforms on tv or in movies as it reflects people's real lives.
Wonderful video! I've been meaning to listen to an analysis of Rory's arc and I love how you capture that discussion through her wardrobe over the seasons. I've never watched Gilmore Girls, but your synopsis was well put together, concise, detailed when need be, and not distracted. I think my favorite look of hers is her pajamas just because of the point you make at 8:59
I’m only a few minutes in but I’m already hooked. I love your insight so much and I appreciate all the work you put in! Also, there’s so much about how you carry yourself that is so relaxing and comforting. I love getting to see portions of you talking among the video clips!
I love your look for this video! It just feels so warm and in line with the topic. I literally had to go back to some of your past videos to check, because I could swear your hair looked darker here.
What's depicted in that storyline is something that happens to a lot of parents who made it possible for their kids to have easier lives than them. She eanted her daughter to have the oportuunities she missed out on by having her and cutting ties with her wealth, but forgot to counter how this would impact someone with different life experiences. As soon as Richard and Emily took her under their wing, there was nothing Lorelai could do. The priviledge to fail upwards with no consequences and real challenges is what really undid all of her parenting and modelling and it's what happens pretty frequently.
This was really interesting! I remember Gilmore Girls being on when I was a kid/teenager, and even though I never sat down and watched all of it, I was always just kind of aware of everything that happened on the show, I guess because of the sporadic episodes I did see combined with the trailers that were always coming out and also combined with kids at school talking about it? Anyway, I'm now actually watching it for the first time all the way through. I just finished season 1--and it's so painful seeing Rory with all her hopes and dreams and knowing what happens to her--particularly in the revival. Anyway, my favorite outfits of hers are honestly still those preppy/academia looks. That has always been my favorite style! And I remember wishing I could wear her Chilton uniform when I was in school, lol.
I love Rory’s character because in some small ways I relate to her, I grew up as an only child who was constantly praised by my parents for any and all success that I had academically or otherwise. My dad’s side of the family is also from the east coast and very wealthy and prestigious people. This show has a lot of charm
I would live for an analysis of Lorelei! Thank you for your thoughtful video, your empathy for characters of all types always impresses me. You are right, life is nuanced.
Her downfall was when her mom told her that she shouldn’t tell Dean the truth about the kiss with Tristan. She learned that she can get away without any consequences…
So glad I discovered this channel (UA-cam knows I’m in yet another autumnal Gilmore girl phase 😂) I LOVE your style and the video is so interesting and informative!
Maybe I'm one of the few people that love Rory's journey. Coming from that background that she comes, makes perfect sense. And also makes perfect sense that she end up alone and discovering herself. Every moment of Gilmore Girls there's someone (her mother, her grandparents, her romantic interests) proyecting how they see her and she trying to reach that expectations. Along the series, she really never have a moment to think about anything else beside future sucess and other expectations.
Very interesting, although I don't agree with the framing of Rory growing up in two worlds. Actually, she has to face this "upper-class world" around 16, when she starts joining Chilton, going to her grandparents regularly, first time hangout with her grandfather. This very important moment of her wearing that golfing hat, her mother first wanting to mock it, then deciding otherwise. She starts enjoying dressing up when she is together with Logan. His influence on her is remarkable, for example when they have that double date with her mother and Luke. At Chilton, she was the one being annoyed by Francine and her talking about the length of the skirt. At the life and death brigade, you could see how she started adapting to their styles. I loved this episode when she dressed up as Uma Thurman. I would have liked your total view on Gilmore Girls including the netflix series "A year in the life". All in all, thanks for the breakdown.
if u are looking for ideas for other characters, mona vanderwaal is a perfect one that depicts how fashion is used to manufacture this idea of self that masks her true nature
I watched Gossip Girl right after I was done with Gilmore Girls, the latter is more relatable and real.. her character, age and pacing of the story is align to the present.
Rory wasnt gifted- she was a good student. But also wasnt a person- she had to be everything her mother didnt get to be. Look how Lor treated her whenever Rory went off the script she had for her life?
Well I suppose I'm an example as well When your mother pushes her expectations on you . Your father doesn't have any expectations at all. You move to an elite school and you can't get any mental psychological support in a vulnerable toxic environment. You end up failing and find out you never really lived for yourself and now you're lost and have no purpose no support no hope... Honestly, I couldn't finish even the first season of gilmore girls i felt so overwhelmed and depressed running through my older self and older depression 😔
I like your videos and points you make, but listening to them is a real challenge: volume levels drop from part to part so I have to change volume all the time 😢 I hope you’ll adjust editing because everything else is so well done
Can we do style analysis on guy characters like Jeff Colby, Sam Jones from cw dynasty. Either do characters like Brad Pitt characters in fight club. Do Empire characters Lucious Lyon, Jamal Lyon, Hakeem lyon. Maybe do female characters like Alexis Colby, cookie lyons, Carrie Bradshaw, Hilary banks & vivienne and Ashley banks from fresh prince of bel air. Even do Carlton banks
while i don't hate your fashion analysis..... you should consider changing the title of your video. ''Why a Gifted Child’s Downfall is Inevitable'' your video had NOTHING to do with this topic. And that was a complete waste of time. i get that you are taking a fashionable approach to rory's changes throughout the series... a series I love and adore all too well... your video title implies that it is an analysis on psychology.... her clothing choices have nothing to do with ''Why a Gifted Child’s Downfall is Inevitable'' there literally was no WHY being answered.
While I agree on the point that the title should be changed because yes, it didn’t go into detail on why the downfall is inevitable but I don’t agree with your opinion on the clothing. Because this was a psychological video and the clothes had a lot to do with where Rory was mentally (psychologically). So the clothes did in fact play a big part and was important.
I actually thought that the aspect of the overarching praise Rory received in the beginning together with the persona and expectations put upon her by the outside world that she couldn't live up to in puberty related to the original title of the video pretty well. I had never thought of it this way when I was watching the show.
Hi! Thanks for your analysis. The things you are saying in the video are very interesting, insightfull but the way of talking is too sleepy, emotionless and almost robotic so your channel is not my cup of tea. But still wish you good luck with your channel and have a nice day.
I actually like the way she's speaking, gives me time to process information. Also, it's hard to express yourself and emote freely on camera. Everyone gets better in time.
I stopped watching this channel because she replaced her voice (which I love) with a computerized one. She did that because of stupid comments like this. I’m so glad she went back to using her own voice for narration. It’s perfect for a fashion analysis channel.
To me i felt kinda sorry for her at times it seemed like everyone in her family had a unhealthy connection to her her Grandpa wanted to live his glory days through her her grandma wanted the little deputaunt and her mother wanted her to do everything she wasn't able to
true, they all tried to live vicariously through her and it put a lot of pressure on her to do well all the time

There's a lot of different subjects in journalism. Going to the Obama's tour seemed like a good fit for her. Or maybe reviewing books
Rory could have gotten a PhD in English and been a college professor
or a barista

The problem was Rory was always put in a pedestal as the bright angel child that could never do wrong, and that gave her the mentality that anything she does has to be right by default, one example of this is when she became the other woman by cheating with Dean instead of aknowledging that what she was doing was morally wrong she remained firm that because he was HER Dean 1st she had the right to him over his wife. you can get designer pieces secondhand or she could have held onto things or they could have been gifts or items she saved up to buy
I loved the Chilton Uniform the best. I am glad that you did this deep dive on Rory Gilmore, they did her dirty in ALITL. It made me so sad for her.

the downfall of rory has to do this with lorelai never stepping up tbh
she did step up & got betrayed by her parents
Even that I like her: still, she is really flawed in certain things. Also Rory never developed any personality
No Lorelai did step up but was betrayed by her parents. The parents interfering and seducing Rory into their world made Rory lazy.
@@mer_bunnyhé ah but i feel like Rory has to play the role of the parent

Why should she tell Dean about the kiss. They broke up she can do what ever she wants. She don't owe Dean an explanation.

Love your hair in this, along with the interesting commentary ❤❤❤
Always look forward to your analysis, thank you it was very insightful
Rory noticed everyone else’s privileges but her own.
Your voice is very soothing
if u are looking for ideas for other characters, mona vanderwaal is a perfect one that depicts how fashion is used to manufacture this idea of self that masks her true nature
I watched Gossip Girl right after I was done with Gilmore Girls, the latter is more relatable and real.. her character, age and pacing of the story is align to the present.
No idea how I found it but I love your channel ☺
Rory wasnt gifted- she was a good student. But also wasnt a person- she had to be everything her mother didnt get to be.
Look how Lor treated her whenever Rory went off the script she had for her life?
Well I suppose I'm an example as well
When your mother pushes her expectations on you .
You should do a video about Cheryl blossom from Riverdale
My favorite look is her fall when she drops out of Yale lol
Another brilliant video!
You have really good style - it actually reminds me of Gossip Girl :)
i didn't know this video would be about fashion
I do I do!
Because my life was a very similar trajectory....
Would you create a video about Elena Gilbert as well?☺️
you have such a fine vocabulary
Love your vids
Love your analysis!!! May I ask what your academic background is?
I would love to see Lorelei please!
You should do Hermione Granger next
Please do a Loreali analysis
She was never disciplined or held accountable. This is the result
How do you decipline a kid when they never done anything. And when Rory messed up she wasn't living at home. Lorelai can't decipline and adult.
I like your videos and points you make, but listening to them is a real challenge: volume levels drop from part to part so I have to change volume all the time 😢
I hope you’ll adjust editing because everything else is so well done
Thank you for the feedback! I’m ordering a proper mic so that I can enhance the audio quality 🙏🏻
Enjoyed it. Some good ideas but was distracted by the talk of clothes. I was more interested in the interpersonal dynamics rather than fashion.
I think this show was very inspired by The Nanny. It also had a lot of food and fashion (and a love interest named Max).
💜
while i don't hate your fashion analysis..... you should consider changing the title of your video.
Yes exactly
While I agree on the point that the title should be changed because yes, it didn’t go into detail on why the downfall is inevitable but I don’t agree with your opinion on the clothing. Because this was a psychological video and the clothes had a lot to do with where Rory was mentally (psychologically). So the clothes did in fact play a big part and was important.
I actually thought that the aspect of the overarching praise Rory received in the beginning together with the persona and expectations put upon her by the outside world that she couldn't live up to in puberty related to the original title of the video pretty well. I had never thought of it this way when I was watching the show.
💛
Frazzled, facing challenges, drowning in ego of untapped potential, losing sense of identity and purpose
Okay for me it’s when she’s walking around in the one piece 🩱 at her grandparents house lol I’m sorry.
P.s I adore this video thank you for sharing ❤
Waste of time, title is unrelated to content
me: wanting to listen to the analysis..... and not understanding the accent 👁👄👁
You lost me at hello. Talk normal!
How the hell can you say to someone to talk normal? Define "normal". No such thing. Even people from the same family can speak differently.
Honestly, then stay lost 🚮 🗑️
Yeah, I understand that this is really subjective how we perceieve other people's way of speaking @@ariadna7189
I stopped watching this channel because she replaced her voice (which I love) with a computerized one. She did that because of stupid comments like this. I’m so glad she went back to using her own voice for narration. It’s perfect for a fashion analysis channel.
Then leave. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
I’ve been waiting for this 🤍
