  • Hahnemuhle BAMBOO mixed media paper... ECO FRIENDLY, sustainable artist paper and SPRING FLORALS demo 🌷
    Hi Guys!
In this video I'm trying out the second of the natural line, eco-frienndly artist papers I received from Hahnemuhle to try. This is the Bamboo mixed media paper which contains 90% sustainable and resource saving bamboo and 10% cotton rag. To demonstrate its flexibility and versatility, I show you how I paint three simple spring florals using three different mediums - watercolour; pastel pencils and acrylics- but it can also be used for charcoal and coloured pencils too.
I hope you find the video interesting, useful and informative but if you still have any questions, please leave a comment in the box below the video and I'll do my best to answer them.
Thank you so much for watching!
See you all in the next one

I got a full size pad of this, I like it but it does have a couple of issues. Firstly erasing on it destroys the tooth - notably. A kneaded eraser fairs better but only if used carefully. Secondly it damages easily when taped and does not take masking fluid well (same problem.) I wanted to do graphite/charcoal pieces on it but it’s fragility with an easer makes this impossible so I use it for gouache instead. It is good for using as a mixed media base for a journal though.

Hi Kyomii! I found the Agave paper had the same issues and did wonder if the bamboo would be similar. I do quite like it as a mixed media paper though but given what you've found with the full size pad, will likely stick to my regular cotton paper for watercolour paintings. 🌷

@@SarahNewburyArt Cotton paper is a much better choice for watercolour. I will say though that Hahnemuhle do a 100% cotton vegan watercolour block (140lb) which is an absolute steal of a price at around £15 for 20 sheets at 9.5 x 12.5 inches. It’s well worth the money Sarah. It’s called Hahnemuhle Expression - not sure if you have used it before - but it would be a much better investment than the Bamboo for watercolour. Check out Amazon for price - it’s currently £15.78 on there.

I tested samples of these last night, and I much preferred the bamboo to the agave. I was surprised since it isn't surface sized, but it does wet on wet FAR better. I felt like the agave sucked the water right out of my brush.

All three mediums worked so nicely...three pretty little paintings! I recently saw this bamboo paper at my local art store and wondered how it would perform. Thanks for testing it out for us.

I am surprised that you used pastels! I am always looking for a good surface that will not empty my wallet! I wonder if you can get more layers if you used a workable fixative? How would this paper hold up? I enjoyed watching you create different flowers for your demonstrations, and the way you moved between mediums was so skillfully done. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us. Remember to take care of yourself and be safe over there!

HI! I used to use pastels quite a lot before I discovered a love for watercolour so it was nice to get them back out for a change! I'm not sure this paper would hold up to a workable fixative but as I haven't actually tested it out yet, I can't say for certain. Hopefully someone else will be able to answer that question for you. I'm glad you liked the video though and thank you as always for your support. Take care 😊🌷

i bought a tiny tiny little pad (i think half of what the sheets are in this video) of this paper years and years ago just bc it was so tiny and only like 2 or 3 euros😅 but i never really used it because i hadnt discovered watercolor yet and didnt know if cotton in a paper was even a good thing or not. and now i want to use it, but the size of my little pad really is not enough obviously, so ill have to see if the local art store carries it in a more... workable size as well and try it out for myself 🤔 great video as always!
edit: oh wait, it IS the same size you used in this video! wow! it feels way smaller when you have it in your hands than when you see it on screen and taped down, thats crazy 😆

It's definitely pretty small! However, quite an inexpensive way to try out a new paper! 😊

I really like sewing with bamboo cotton, and like to knit with bamboo knitting needles so am thinking this will be good for me and go with my bamboo paint brushes which I love too.All three pictures look fab but that's down to the artist
