  • Dining @ The Fat Duck to celebrate two birthdays (Janet and Mine), as well as our 1 year Engagement anniversary. I video'd the most dramatic courses - that being the Liquid Nitrogen poached Green Tea and Lime Mouse, the Mad Hatters tea party, and Oak Forest inspired dish.

    Thank you, Bernard for the video. Dining at the Fat Duck is definitely on my bucket list. Saw the makings of the Mad Hatter course in one of Heston's Feast videos and was blown away by the effort that goes into the dish.

    These days the top restaurants are more like a stage show. And there's nothing wrong with that. I'd pay for something that excites me, engages my senses and leaves me with something to talk about for weeks to come. Like going to a musical, it's expensive, gives you something completely different but sometimes when you get home you just want to chuck on the TV or movie to fill up the rest of your night :)

    As a chef, I can appreciate the elements and precision that goes into Heston's dishes. Why is that the general population require copious amounts of processed food to be content? The prices are actually quite reasonable for the experience. Compared to the $700 13 course gastronomy menu at my workplace, it's quite cheap.

    • @mrbernz
      @mrbernz  10 років тому

      Wow Ben, where do you work? $700 seems like an awful amount of money to be paying!

      Bernard leung if you earn 10k a month, and many people do, $700 every now and then probably seems reasonable.

    • @mrbernz
      @mrbernz  10 років тому

      guguigugu I can see how some would think that but I know some people who earn in excess of that and they would still find that extravagant. Having said that I guess it's about the experience and everyone's perception of worth for that is different. Some people would pay $X,000 for the experience of carrying around a LV hand bag. Personally is prefer to go eat a few times at mckennaben505 workplace ;-)

    The best thing about this is that despite the hefty price tag, there's no dress code or imposed formal behaviour. Everyone is welcome if they can foot the bill.

    If the prices here were even half reasonable you'd be lucky to get a reservation within the next decade...

  • @mrbernz
    @mrbernz  12 років тому

    I would recommend trying definitely. Be aware that bookings are avaialble 2 months from the day you want to eat, and most bookings are gone within the hour. I tried for 45 minutes on 2 lines, and only managed to get a weekend lunch reservation. Week days are much easier, but still a small trial.

    To all those comments about being "filling" or "pizza". You don't eat at these establishments to be "full" just as you don't open a vintage french wine to satisfy your thirst. That would be just dumb. Also, best of both worlds. These people enjoy the creativity of food as well as a piece of dough filled with pepperoni. You critics only enjoy the latter. It's about new experiences. I have eaten pizza since birth and I'm sick of it. I want to explore just as you all should.

    I agree with iSaac92. Restaurants like this brings an experience to food in the most unusual ways. We all go to the traditional restaurants often, but it must be something to experience a molecular gastronomy-based restaurant at least once. I definitely plan to do one one day.

    With or without wine? Expect pay a minimum of £400 for dinner for two, with wine that can escalate astronomically. Wine options start from £80/pp for matching, and go to £580/pp. A specialist wine list goes into the thousands!

  • @IanBillen
    @IanBillen 11 років тому

    Yes. I read up on it. The Fat Ducks objective was to take science and food technology, and incorporate it with a meal "experience" in having the scent, sight as well as even sound of the dish. Using vacuums and liquid nitrogen etc. etc. to prepare, and introduce, an innovate the food and cooking in an exquisite way was the objective of The Fat Duck restaurant. The result is a sort of "futuristic" version of elegant dining. Each dish even has a theme it follows which is kina cool. Interesting -

    Amazing place and amazing food. Now my selective comment to those negative posts on here. Firstly there is no gun to anyone's head forcing them to come here. They do it of their own free will. Second, so long as a person's money has been obtained honestly, who are you to criticize how they spend it? Finally, regarding the "I'd rather have a pizza" or steak and chips crowd... good for you. These people have probably tried and enjoyed them to. This is simply another sense of life and creativity.

    There are literally thousands of restaurants that do what you just said. The fat duck is about an experience as much as it is about having a meal, and it's a place you would go very rarely. Nobody eats like this day in, day out and the fat duck isn't suggesting you should do otherwise.

    Hard to compare as it's like asking if coke tasts better then beef - it's a totally different sensation. The food is amazing, and not comparible to anything else I've ever tasted. If you are after more regular food cooked with Heston's festidious attention to detail then I'd highly recommend "Dinner by Heston" instead. His 48 hour cooked beef steak was mind-blowing - you could eat it with a spoon and the flavour was intense!
