  • In this video, I'll show you how to propagate tea olive, a hardy shrub that can be used to create a beautiful and sturdy landscape. If you're looking to add some greenery to your garden but don't have any experience with propagating plants, this video is for you! I'll show you how to use sand and a rubbermaid to propagate tea olive, a shrub that can be used to create a beautiful and sturdy landscape. With a little patience and a little luck, you'll have a new plant in your garden in no time! These cuttings were taken in October and dipped in a 10:1 Dip n Grow solution. We will overwinter the cuttings in the rubbermaid and place the them in full shade where they will get indirect sunlight. In the spring we will take the cuttings out and plant them in a 1 gallon pot.

I absolutely love fragrant olives. Almost 20 yrs ago I kept smelled this wonderful scent in our neighborhood but never saw a flowering tree. Finally after 2 or 3 years we happened to notice this massive 25 ft tall bush with tiny flowers. I thought no way it could be that but it was!
I asked a neighbor what the tree was and ever since I've been in love. We could smell it the next street over. ❤
When we bought a house I planted 5 of them but now we are moving 😢 I am going to propagate probably 20 of these to be safe and also want them all over our property ❤❤❤

I'm so excited to try this.
I tried last year with typical rooting hormone and failed miserably.
I have 10 tea olives that I've been growing for two years, in a beautiful hedge and now I need to create a screen on the back of my property, so I'm using this method.

Thank you so much! Following your instructions, I managed to get a sweet olive cutting from New Orleans to take root in my Chicago apartment. It's been in the bin for about 5 weeks now, but I was wondering if you could recommend what the next step should be. The weather's still a bit chilly here. Should I move the cutting to a pot with different soil? Should I leave it in the bin for another 3 or 4 weeks? Thank you!

    • @Dr.Warren

Leave it a while longer. Look up your last frost date. Once you are past that date you could transplant into a bigger pot and fresh potting mix. Let it grow out this summer in the pot and you could plant it in the fall. Also, look up the cold hardiness zone on tea olive. I can't remember what it is off the top of my head. Make sure it can handle the windy city if outdoors during the winter. You might have to pull it in.

Dr. Warren, this is very helpful as I am planning to go to my friends house to get some cuttings. Questions : 1/. I am in zone 9a, even now is June, early summer, can I cut some to try propagate it as a trial? 2/. Can I use root grow power, if so, how to use it ? 3/. I noticed that you only spray about 8-10 tune to the cutting already in the sand, should I dip them in the liquid? 4/. if the cutting in the rubbermaid after two weeks getting dry, what should I spray? water? or the same liquid ? 5/. what is the best time to plant the cutting with roots growing into pot? I surely ask lots of questions, thank you for your time. Again, your teaching video is very very helpful, appreciated.

Is this the same Esther that was in my Bio class a few years back? To answer your questions.
      1. yes, you can try to take some cuttings now.
      2. Yes, you can use rooting powder
3, yes, you can dip them
      4. You always want condensation on the container. If no condensation add water.
      5. let it root out in the container for 60-90 days and then transplant to a pot.

If you are wanting to take cuttings now I would introduce some heat to them once you stick them. However, it probably isnt 100% necessary. I have taken winter cuttings and tuck them in a cold frame and had success. It just takes MUCH longer to get roots.

On the line between 8a-7b. The best time to do it is late spring or early summer with semi hardwood cuttings. I've rooted some over winter in my propagation box. Takes a long time to get roots but it's possible to do it.

Dr. Warren, I have tried for years to root an Osmanthus and I am so excited that I finally got one to root in water. It has a 1-inch root. When should I plant it in soil? How long can I leave it in water? Should I move it to a warmer location in the winter? Thank you.

    • @Dr.Warren
      @Dr.Warren  10 місяців тому +1

Get about an inch worth of roots (in length) and you can transition it into some potting mix. Continue to keep it wet by watering daily until the roots begin to grow more into the potting mix. This first winter it would probably be a good idea just to keep it in a south facing window indoors.
