Took hydrangea cuttings from what I knew wasnt a recommended cutting from a flower top. Flowers a friend was given as a gift. Well they took and have two different varieties of hydrangeas. So pleased as they flowered.
The interesting thing about hydrangeas is that they have the ability to root all along the stem. So that angle cut at the bottom isn’t needed. Just an interesting tidbit I thought I’d pass along 😊. great video 👍 btw
@@luv14lyffrom my experience propagating, there isn’t much difference between them. The theory is that you increase the surface area of the bottom if you cut at an angle but I never do and it hasn’t hindered my success at all. It still roots with a straight cut just as well as with an angle cut. The theory does make sense in that you ARE increasing surface area but honestly, it makes no difference.
Thanks for sharing! Ilive in a rental now and am moving into my first purchase. The rental has the biggest most beautiful hydrangeas Ive ever seen. The landlord said I was welcome to take some cutting for my new home. So Im gonna take him up on that!! 😅
I had a 5' x 8'' blue hydrangea that grew in Middle Georgia (zone 8) in full sun by my pool with reflecting concrete. It was always a show stopper - I guess over 25 years old when I moved away. They do adapt!
Dirt perfect said to check you out, so we all followed his advise. Once we found you, your personality and your interesting interests, got hooked,, I didn’t mention funny,I love funny 👍👍👍👍
Great clip! I have four different varieties and I am going to try and propagate them. And thanks for telling folks to actually clean their gardening tools as we do not want to contaminate our other plants
There is a " family" lacy blue hydrangea over 100 years old ,only a few people have been able to root and regrow this.myself included in the ..not.. group.i cant wait to try this!
Now you have 8,001 subscribers! Thank you for showing us how to propagate hydrangeas. I love their deep, beautiful color. my animals never do anything on video either lol! I also loved how you explained about your hydrangeas because you had to take the tree down and you have to prop up your gutter, because this is life it’s not perfect. Thank you for your channel.
Thank you for the great photos that show the cambium layer and explain its importance! Please post a video on how to prune a newly rooted cutting to encourage "bushiness."
Great video ,and I also learned about soft and hardwood cuttings and how to recycle a milk carton to make a mini greenhouse.Very inventive 👏🏻Greetings from Ireland ☘️
Appreciate your clear explanations, methods and video close-ups!! Love the accent!! I'm gonna try this up here in Southern Canada (zone 5B) 1st I need to uproot hydrangeas my dad planted in a small crowded smothering space & find a better spit for them & plant 2 new ones!!
Nice tutorial, thank you. Video ends with the new little starts inside the plastic milk jug “greenhouse” with starts just planted. But when and in what environment should they then be planted in my yard? Do I need root growth of a certain length or do I need temperatures to fall below a certain threshold for the afternoon temps? I appreciate your help and advice. I live in zone 6A.
I wait until flower is gone and remove the seed pod. I dry the seed out completely in a white paper bag. Next season, I pull them out and break them open. Lots of seeds😊
When inserting the cutting into dirt, doesn't the rooting hormone just rub off on the dirt while you're pushing the cutting down? I've always used a new chop stick or pencil to create a hole first, then insert cutting. Thanks for sharing! I never have cut the leaves in half!
That's what I would do also exactly . The more foliage that is left will suck the energy ,thus why he is taking most off, so the energy will go into the stem as it starts to gain roots.
Hydrangeas are my most favorite. Thanks for showing how to propagate them. Mopheads are my least favorite because here in KY we get late freezes and it kills the buds for the year, often I have no flowers. But I love all the rest of them. Love the blue color of the mopheads too. Thanks.
Mopheads do great in containers. They just need a slow release fertilizer to fulfill their nutrient requirements. This way, you can just drag the pot into your garage once it’s gone to sleep for the winter. Drag it back out in early spring. I do this for a lemon tree that’s not hardy in my area. Works great 👍 it’s going on its 6th year now
I'm in Southern Ontario, Canada & my hydrangeas came back on their own. And we had days of -37°C!! Although I didn't do anything, You can trim them, prune down, remove dead flower heads, that may help.
Thank you so much - I must have watched at least ten videos on this topic - this one made the most sense to me. Easy to follow - you explain everything very well - thank you again
It's now 2024 July and I still cannot find your posting about Hydrangea propagation way back from 2023 July ! What happened . Did it work for you sir ? Nice video 😄 I have a cutting from a gifted variety flower arrangement. I believe its the Incrediball variety and its beautiful! Can I propagate that if I remove the bloom? Its a long stem with a large bloom at the end. Ive been keeping it in a water in a flower vase 💐
Yes, how long to plant in ground. If it takes ~ a month to grow roots, how long until plant is established and can survive fall/winter weather. I’m in NJ and it’s 8/5/2024 🙁🤔
Thank you so much for the great and informative tutorial. I wonder if this propagation method works for both hydrangea that flower on old wood and hydrangea that flower on new wood?
Can I use a plastic container for propagation? If so, is it ok to put container in a storage building that does not get much light, or should I leave my make shift green house outside? Great video.
Thanks for the easy instructions for the hydrangeas. I only have one plant. I don't think my soil is the best for it. It looks beautiful right now but only10" or so high. I'm in Colorado. Maybe too much sun for it.

The house is going up for sale so I am going to try and take cuttings of this in remembrance. I have no green fingers whatsoever but hopefully will be able to do this! I’ll try to do an update video soon. You need to try and keep the young roots somewhat protected until next spring. Maybe in the garage since you are in zone 6?
How are they doing now? Did you use soil that’s specifically acidic when you propagated? Or should you wait on adjusting pH levels until they have taken root?
I gave them away once rooted. Dont worry about soil ph while rooting. Adjust PH after planting, it’s really the aluminum amount in soil that changes the color of the blooms.
Loved this video. My neighbor has a huge hydrangea that I love so now I can take some cuttings and grow some of them for free. When is the best time to plant them in the garden outside? I’m new to this and would love a gorgeous garden.
