I think the most important thing the Playstation Classic shows us is just how dependent Sony was during that first generation of their consoles on Third Party games.
That was always clear though, they were rampant in their acquisition of deals with third party studios leading up to the launch of the PS1 because they simply had to. The fact they managed to get SO many and produce so many great games is testament to some of the great decisions made in both business relationships and also hardware (Square moving over from Nintendo as they wanted to make use of CD, for example)

I feel your pain. One thing I thought of was that they should have made it able to connect to the PS3’s PSN. That has tons of PS1 classics that could have been downloaded to the PS mini. Keeping the 20 original games on it of course. That would have made $100 not a bad price & it would have been a step up above Nintendo’s Classic consoles. SMH. I love your videos, John. Take care.

It's interesting that SONY screwed this up so bad! When the original PlayStation came out, it fixed Everything Nintendo did wrong, mostly in terms of power and storage and treating their fans right and treating developers, and even stores right...Now Nintendo puts out the NES Classic and just nails it....Would have been easy for Sony to counter, But, they didn't even use their own superior in house emulators to honor their past...WTF happened?
I always find it funny when Euro gamers from the 80s and 90s would talk about how great they were at games only to find out later that they weren't great, they were just playing them in slow motion.
Not really that's a load of rubbish. I'm in my 60s and still smash all you young kids. Problem with the last few generation's is. They just run now gun. You lot lack brain cells to think tactically. Dread to see you lot go to war. You lot would rush in thinking you can re spawn....
I did want to mention a few other possible observations: 1. Games from that generation have generally not aged as well as other eras of gaming, so many of them may not feel great to go back to. I think this is part of the reason there are a lot of 3D game remakes. 2. The fact that the games included required it to be rated M may have lessened the appeal to those with a family, such that the purchase seemed more “selfish” instead of something to be shared.
Why Gran Turismo and Tony Hawk aren't on there? It's pretty simple: That's because the games have so much licensed content, which in this day and age, it is no longer possible to reacquire them. Plus, when you have a licensed game on there, if the license for one of the things in the game runs out and cannot be renewed, either the PlayStation Classic had to be removed from store shelves completely, or remove the game and re-release the PlayStation Classic without the game in-question.
Thanks for the review, I read the games listing and kept trying to find some reason to justify adding this to my collection. Especially when I still have the original and I can't think of one reason to get this. Maybe when it goes on clearance for under $40 or $50 I might consider it just for adding it to the collection.
I am a huge Playstation fan, but I am so happy I didn't buy this. What a piece of crap. There are so many wrong turns that were taken with this product.
It's been said a lot, but Gran Turismo and Tony Hawk were not included because of licensing issues. Games with a lot of real life people, sponsors, cars, music, are extraordinarily hard to get the rights to reproduce in its original state and flat-out impossible for car games (it's why Forza games are de-listed for sale after the contracts expire). As of why no Symphony of the Night or Crash Bandicoot for example, we have to assume either Konami and Activision said no or Sony were being stupid about it.
I hope the suits at SONY don't get the wrong idea and think that nobody is buying the PSC because they think that consumers think that that generation of games hasn't aged well or some other BS. And then give up on offering any PS1 stuff in the future.
Good point or is them trying to make a point and make us think that they are right and that nobody wants to play old games thus proving their point that backward compatibility is not necessary. Thus saving them $0.77 when they release the PS5?? Conspiracy Theory
Yeah no one really should even use that as a criticism. “Haven’t aged well”. The games are what they are, and of their time. That’s why you would be buying this thing and playing them. If old graphics bother you, it’s not for you. The PlayStation classic is doing a disservice to these games by presenting them so poorly.
Manek Iridius No, that was a PS2 they shoved into the early models of the PS3. PS1 was done through software emulation which is why you see issues like Spyro 2 cutscenes losing audio.
I waited to buy mine; eventually picked it up on sale for $29. I did hack it with a new frontend and a script to allow me to use a cable that combines a USB port and cable for power. I have around 150 original PS1 games, so I took some of my favorites, ripped them and play them off a 64GB USB drive. Now I've (mostly) corrected Sony's mistakes by adding Lunar: Eternal Blue, Einhander, Tomb Raider and many other classics to their emulation box. So I did make a silk purse out of a sow's ear :)
Even retro compilations that came out years ago on the PS2 do things much better than this and they're way cheaper. Not only do they have great games on them which also run great, they usually have all sorts of history on them, like pictures of box art, and even sometimes videos, like interviews and stuff. Seems like the only thing the PS1 Classic is great for is to just be displayed on a shelf, since I do think it looks quite cool.
when the disappointment is at the highest, it means the anticipations and expectation were at the highest as well, which is sad. That means that we want a PS Classic.
Each Christmas these mini consoles keep being our disappointment. I Did finally buy a family a snes classic and it was a absolute hit, gaming the whole night, just like a classic gaming Christmas. You're right about the pricing, I would never do this ps1 for a 100 when you could recreate the real thing for less. It doesn't even come with a cord!!!?
My biggest complaint with all the classic consoles is the inability to use wireless controllers. HDMI isn't the only improvement to gaming since the old console came out. Id pay extra to be able to use my ps3 or ps4 controllers. I will just stick to my OG ps3 and original disc games. So much better to play like that.
@@gustavosoto4607 Yeah i got a couple bluetooth SNES ones for my switch, they are awesome. I got a couple 2.4 ghz wireless ps2 knockoffs for 10 bucks apiece off amazon for my PS2. For 100 bucks they should have added bluetooth in my opinion. I have 2 very large german sheperds and they do not understand this archiac wire technology lol. I have a heart attack every time they attempt to limbo under the cables.
I had no desire to pick this up. Not included Symphony Of The Night was the biggest reason why. This was not my biggest disappointment though. Recently I got a third party console for $60 called SX-86 Mini Games Console. It has a huge library of Neo Geo, GameBoy Advance, PS1/SNES, Sega & Famicom games but some are glitchy, have broken controls and terrible slowdown & sound. If you see one, avoid it at all cost.
I bought it and i love it. Why? This is the best looking case with nice controllers for my raspberrypi, not having to lay hands on original PS1. But i am a bit disappointed there are no optional DualShocks for it.
I was SORT OF, considering buying a Playstation classic.... just, as a collectible. So, yeah the $100 price tag is wrong, and especially with how terrible it turned out (not including an HDMI cable is the least of my worries however; I got a new computer monitor that came with one, for Christmas, as well as an additional HDMI cable; I have the NES and SNES classics that each came with one, the Switch that came with one, an Xbox One S that came with one, AND I have the original HDMI cable I originally bought for my PS3, as well as an an extra HDMI cable I ended up with somehow [also my PS3 is currently hooked up, and NOT using the HDMI cable I originally bought for it, so, I don't know how or where the one I am using came from]) - and I have heard the price has dropped (I saw it for $49.99 at Target, the last time I was in there, but that was probably 2 or 3 weeks ago, so it might have changed by now). I never did have "an original" original Playstation; my older brother and I both got a Playstation (and NOT the PSOne redesign), either Christmas 1997 or 1998 (I think it was 1998), but yeah it was NOT an original, original model. I don't even still have the one he and I both got - I ended up buying two others in more recent years; I found one at the Goodwill for $20. I had packed it away and lost it, so I went on Ebay and bought another, so yeah, two, but I think they're the "middle" revision models (I think there were three original models; the launch model, the first revision, and the second revision, all three before the PSOne model was made - so yeah, I think both my consoles are the first revision, they both have the multiple A/V output, NOT directly composite, but also that additional output thing on the left-hand side when facing the back of the console)
I disagree with you John, Ridge Racer 4 i think is one of the best games on the classic, also one of the best RR games. Im surprised it made it on there TBH. Putting Gran Turismo on there would be a licensing nightmare. I understand why Sony skipped putting GT on there, but still...a bad collection of games on the PS Classic.
Well, there’s some frame rate skipping at some times. Better to grab a USB Keyboard and turn off frame skipping completely, or try to do a retro arch & ePSXe mod for better emulation.
Lastly, I'll go ahead and mention the few that, whether if anyone else agree's with these or not, I feel they should have at the least been included (they needed to be, just like you said with Final Fantasy VIII): Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night, Spyro The Dragon, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, MediEvil. Five, that should have been included. And I mean, I'll admit, I'm terrible when it comes to judgement and making the call on what should or should not be included type of thing; I'll agree with he Tony Hawk game you mentioned, mainly because I never was into those types of games, but I always hear great about them, or at least that particular one, but yeah, I can't make that call exactly. As far as a racing game, again, I wouldn't know what to say SHOULD HAVE been included. But to me, these five I mentioned are the solid essentials that should have been included (and if not MediEvil, because I know there's probably those that wouldn't care about it, or never liked it/hate it, then I don't know what to change it out with - I hate to admit this, but I never had or played that many PS1 games, but the ones I have played, I enjoyed pretty well, so I've included some of those as my picks of what should have been included).
Comparing this classic console to the SNES classic is night and day. This has like 3 or 4 good games worth playing, and the SNS classic has 3 or 4 games that I wouldn't want to play... plus the slash in price, the better menu, the viewing options. Sony really let everyone down.
I am disappointed in this system. They should have included Tony hawks pro skater, crash bandicoot, and the legend of dragoon. This attempt was very lackluster. This, in my opinion, was Sony's first bomb. Everything they did up until now has been revolutionary and state of the art...
Nintendo does the same thing for manuals, and doesn't include AC adaptors either. Also I like the menu design, reminds me of the PS1 menu when you don't insert a game.
This turned out to be a great emulation console. If you can get it for the $29 price I saw it at lately go for it and add a 128gig SD card and go to town.
Tony hawk pro skater won’t ever be on a stock re release - the soundtrack alone being the reason. The reason it runs slower is not pal it’s the emulator
You know, it's funny. I'm a massive wild arms fan and I thought it was one of those games that no one knew about, but everyone does. It just never comes up, despite it being one of the first RPGs that uses a full motion camera in battles
Bleemsync is your friend. I kept my unit because the PS Classic is more powerful than the PS TV. With Bleemsync you can play all the Playstation One games you want. The games play fine. My favorites are Moto Racer 2, Need For Speed, Namco Museum Vol 1-5, Heart of Darkness, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Marvel vs Capcom 1, Marvel vs Street Fighter, Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bash, Crash Team Racing, Disney Hercules, Einhander, FIFA 98, GEX, Raiden and Spyro. Can't wait to discover more classic playstation games.
I'm already seeing people putting their PlayStation Classics on eBay here in the uk (they seem to be going for around £40-£50) can you imagine the flood of second hand ones there'll be after xmas?!
That's why I ended up playing Legend of Dragoon by an emulator. I really don't understand why Sony didn't include this game, this was one of their big first party game.
A few months ago, I saw a bunch, I don't know, 20, 30, 50 of these sitting unsold in my local Target (and I can't remember what price they were, unless around $50). Well, recently I was given a raspberry pi (well, it was a trade kind of, I traded a duplicate NES TMNT for the pi), and I decided to start farting around with PS1 games - I still have roughly 20-30 titles I've had or collected since I was a kid when PS1 was happening, so ripping the game CD's and adding them to the pi, this is my affordable method of getting better video output quality, when I'm more or less broke and can't afford to get my PS1 or PS2 consoles modded. Anyway, I only had a SNES controller to work with (I have a USB port from RetroUSB - granted, I do have an Xbox One, I have not tried the controller with the pi yet), and when I was playing around with Doom, I remembered the two L and R buttons PS1 controllers had (got to the end of stage 1, had the shotgun, could not switch weapons). I went back to Target two days ago, they had ONE left in stock, $40, and I bought it. This was sort of a "blind" purchase, since I was hoping the controllers would have similar plugs to the NES and SNES classic editions (then I would just need a USB converter cable). To my surprise, they're straight up USB, so all is working excellently with my raspberry pi! On another plus side, I do like the collectibility of the PS1 classic, the box and packaging is nice and it makes a nice display piece on one of my shelves. And if I absolutely wanted to, I could always mod it and add more and NTSC versions of games to it if I wanted to (kind of pointless since I now have a raspberry pi though). Yes, I am happy that I spent $40 for one of these, but otherwise I wish I had gotten it for free.... Sony does not deserve that $40 from me.
I also, just tonight, found out PS3's, all models to my knowledge, will play PS1 game discs. So many people lied over the years about backwards compatibility.... I think it's supposedly true with PS2 games, but come on, all I cared about for years was PS1!
I was so excited until I seen the lineup. I was really let down after it was released and I'm glad I didn't get it. I still don't understand why Destruction Derby 1 is on there when Destruction Derby 2 is a far superior game. Such a great game and a missed opportunity for Sony..
I'd agree with everything you said but Tony hawk and Gran Turismo were probably excluded because of licensing with vehicles and songs. I doubt sony would have included them either way.
While I agree with most of your points, I actually like the menu aesthetic is pretty neat as it is trying to emulate the look of the original Playstation menu when the there was no disc in the reader. Maybe they could've done it better, but I think that's what they were going for.
Problem is that the ps1 was a third party juggernaut. If Sony wasn't going to get all those names on board they shouldn't have bothered. Capcom, Namco, Konami, and Activision. I bet a Saturn, Genesis, or Dreamcast mini would do way better simply because Sega made the bulk of their best games.
You don’t get to charge more just because the PS1 is newer. It’s still an emulator box with the same emulator parts. But to charge more and then also put in so little effort to make it worth owning. It actually bothers me more than it should. I was so excited when I landed a preorder a couple months ago. When I clicked cancel, a small part of me died.
J Swagner I might get this, because there might be emulator options to remap the buttons to any random USB game controller you have lying around your house.
Would you be interested in the original ps1 box? It's the white box not the black box.. (not ps1 small version box) I'd be glad to send it to you. I can send you a pic if you'd like..
IMO Sony could have done something really special but they squandered it in hopes of some quick easy money. Now the market is saturated with minis for almost every retro system. So even if they tried to redeem themselves with some sort of new version, it's to late.
I feel like Sony knew it was going to be hacked regardless so they just put games that were easy for them and games due to copyrights. They just said we will put a console and let the people have at it. It's not a let down to me. Personally it's just a playstation classic that you'll be able to hack it the way you want it to be. If you're not into that type of modding and what not then you'll say it's a let down. For me I'm into making retro gaming my own so it's perfect for me.
I do not own one of these & couldn't care less about it, but other then that, it reminds me of the raspberry pie they keep making for the Sega mega drive, & Nintendo systems?...
Since I have my PS3, why should I get the PSClassic for just a few games? I'm disappointed that Parasite Eve is not included there, since we Europeans did get that.
This was a total cheap money grab by Sony. They could have built a fully fledged remake, working disk drive and all. But no, instead they try and sell us this useless machine with a handful of games for a whopping $100. After reading the initial press releases for this console, I had already decided against buying it.
Thank you for enduring the PS Classic so we don't have to. Even with the game selection, I would have kept my pre-order had I not learned that most games were the PAL versions. But knowing that, I canceled two weeks before release.
You’ve said it best, John. No one else’s reviews expressed my feelings as well as yours. I agree 100%. Haha TM2 is so much better. So many bad decisions. It’s just sad. Such a missed opportunity. It could have been a quality product to be proud of, with games that performed better than they did 25 years later. Not worse! Bad Sony.

Lmao
Worst thing is that image was squeezed and not full screen. But at least we were playing them in RGB.
Not really that's a load of rubbish. I'm in my 60s and still smash all you young kids. Problem with the last few generation's is. They just run now gun. You lot lack brain cells to think tactically. Dread to see you lot go to war. You lot would rush in thinking you can re spawn....
Ioannis THEY PLAY 20% FASTER!!!
I did want to mention a few other possible observations:
Is he tipsy? I would be too if I had to review this product. I really wanted to get one of these.
John have you had a chance to checkout the Phantasy Star release on the switch?
If you were to buy a PS Classic, I would get the True-blue Mini USBs that can update the PS Classic Library. It does make it better.
FYI John, there is a USB power cable included but no power brick.
Hi William C. Reilly!
There are vids saying you can hack it to add more games. Is this true?
You know you're in trouble when the best thing you can say about it is ""Well, I like the box it came in."'.
when the disappointment is at the highest, it means the anticipations and expectation were at the highest as well, which is sad.
The SNES mini in UK and Europe never had a USB plug either. It's so they can ship the same package to all regions easily.
0:02 the only time John Hancock has been spotted not smiling
My biggest complaint with all the classic consoles is the inability to use wireless controllers. HDMI isn't the only improvement to gaming since the old console came out. Id pay extra to be able to use my ps3 or ps4 controllers. I will just stick to my OG ps3 and original disc games. So much better to play like that.
Joe Rad a very good point.
Its cool that 8bitdo sells bluetooth controlers for all mini consoles
@@gustavosoto4607
Yeah i got a couple bluetooth SNES ones for my switch, they are awesome.
Wasn't this hacked and there is a video showing someone using their ps3 controller on the console.
@@Sparkykelly1 Not that I am aware, if it has been I would definitely want to learn how, shoot a link if you find it
I had no desire to pick this up.
Type 4 was great but Rage Racer was better.
The music on this game is sublime too, the perfect Ridge Racer only bettered on the PSP
@@JustinCherriman 1000% agree.
Well, there’s some frame rate skipping at some times. Better to grab a USB Keyboard and turn off frame skipping completely, or try to do a retro arch & ePSXe mod for better emulation.
I didn't want to be the one to tell everyone this, but... I TOLD YOU SO.
Did you also have to turn the Classic over to make it work?
Lastly, I'll go ahead and mention the few that, whether if anyone else agree's with these or not, I feel they should have at the least been included (they needed to be, just like you said with Final Fantasy VIII):
Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night,
Spyro The Dragon,
Tomb Raider,
Crash Bandicoot,
MediEvil.
8:00 “do you guys not have phones”
I agree. It costs 130 USD here in Croatia. I went to store and asked if anyone bought one. They said "NO".
Sony did lousy job with it.
no it aint john its the soulja boy console paid $500 FOR A LOAD OF CRAP lol
back when playstation was released we didn't have phones to look at manuals, we had pagers and phone booths
I am disappointed in this system. They should have included Tony hawks pro skater, crash bandicoot, and the legend of dragoon. This attempt was very lackluster. This, in my opinion, was Sony's first bomb. Everything they did up until now has been revolutionary and state of the art...
The omission of The Legend of Dragoon is the most baffling because its a first party game, so theres no excuse.
So know we know you can play at 60hz and add any game. Not so bad anymore!
I've been seeing this at Walmart for 40$ but I remember it being 90$ a few months ago
At $100 bucks, licensing shouldn't have been an issue at all. Sony is a HUGE company, c'mon man!
This could have been so amazing but at least it saved me $100! I'm hoping for an N64 classic this years suitable for HD tvs
I just purchased on Amazon for just $49.99........... I can't wait to mod it.
Also sony did this with the PS3- they didnt include an hdmi cable just composite cables.
The price has gone down to $70 in several places. Ridge Racer 4 also has the remake of Ridge Racer at 60FPS...so there's that.
Having Twisted Metal 1 - 3 would have been awesome. I assume they didn't do Twisted Metal 3 or Tony Hawk due to license pricing/issues.
I guess they didn't include the usb-adapter cuz they knew nobody would want to keep playing it after the 1st try so they didn't bother doning that.
The UA-camr let him borrow it...then refused to ever take it back.
What is happening over at Sony? This is the kind of stupid mistake I would expect from 1980's Atari or Late 1990's SEGA, not the PlayStation brand.
I’ll just stick with the original PS1 model...
Or PS2 or PS3
Because they're backwards compatible
I'm sure glad I bought a Sega Genesis mini.
And I was glad I went to the NES classic instead
Pfft. Your expectations were too high for this. Biggest disappointment of 2018 is AtGames completely losing any sort of potential.
That intro was so freaking greatXDXD
Thank you for enduring the PS Classic so we don't have to. Even with the game selection, I would have kept my pre-order had I not learned that most games were the PAL versions. But knowing that, I canceled two weeks before release.
You’ve said it best, John. No one else’s reviews expressed my feelings as well as yours. I agree 100%. Haha TM2 is so much better. So many bad decisions. It’s just sad. Such a missed opportunity. It could have been a quality product to be proud of, with games that performed better than they did 25 years later. Not worse! Bad Sony.
