5:45 tools in a bag like that, that's not for me, but I got most things I need in my back pack, but if goign for a car trip, it's best to bring everything you can.
Liking the choice of transportation Doddy - lovely car's those A4 estates. I currently make do with VW Polo BlueGT just about gets me & bike (29r , I'm lucky as only 5ft 7" so use small/medium frames, take both wheels out) + spare set of wheels + most of the kit you mentioned in for a MTB XC race day....do have done roof bars + bike rack but don't use them all the time as it's s complete pain all the dirt the bike dumps on your nice clean car at times.
I have a mini van that is dedicated to cycling. Removed all the rear seats, and it has all the tools, a cooler and cleaning equipment. Also, I can fit two bikes inside without removing wheels. And it some situations, I’ll sleep in it when I’m camping at a bike park. It’s the best!!
I find that a roll of heavy dudy refuse sacks is essential in winter. I use them for standing on when muddy to avoid wet or dirty feet and you can chuck your filthy stuff in them and they are disposable. Ikea bags are great too.
Here's a little tip that I use when I go fishing and get covered in mud, fish etc. Get yourself a hand pump 5ltr pressure sprayer, I bought mine from Screwfix for about £15. Fill it up with your washing solution of choice, bike wash, I just use water with some Fairy liquid. Now with your brush, you can wash the worst of the mess of you, your clothes and your bike before you even put it all in the car leaving you with a lot less mess when you get home.
Sure I'm not alone in forgetting every piece of possible kit at some point or other so a Dry bag with a full kit (my old stuff) in is always in my van, helmet, shorts, top, jacket, boots, gloves etc, you can have it ready packed and just get into the routine take it with you but only open and use if you forget something. Wet wipes, yep it's not manly but if you've done a long hard ride then it's nice to get a bit clean at the end and those cheap white bin liner bags for dirty washables can be spun and knotted to seal and keep car funk to a minimum.
That Topeak kit is nice, but if you can't afford it there's plenty of off branded took kits that would help in a pinch. Sure the tools won't be as nice as Topeak or Park, but in a jam do you really care? I take a portable work stand with me too whenever I travel. I'd hate to drive several hours and not have tools or a means to fix my bike. Cheap but effective stands can be had at Aldi.
this is great but when you share the car with someone (for example your loved one and i m not refering to the bike :P) then you can t have this amount of stuff+liner in the car all the time. Installing all this before every riding occassion would take too much time as well. I usually have a big ikea bag stuffed with tools and riding kit and old rugs for dirt protection then I can carry everything at once with the bike to the car.
I have a truck with topper always ready to go. Cooler, tools, stove, house batteries, main bike, back up bike, bed in back with drawers under, ect. I could live out of it, but unfortunately we have to go to work also.
I'm surprised to see doddy put his bike in rear wheel first. I take the front wheel off and put the bike in fork first. This way my dirty wheels are further towards the back of the car. Also, the handlebar can vertically sit down into the rear foot well rather than taking up more horizontal space in the back of the car.
I just can't find a trunk liner that protects the whole trunk from the lid up to the front seats (so with the rear seats dropped down as you'd usually have your car set up to make the bike fit), can anyone help me out with a link or a suggestion? Thx
Judging from the rest of the comments I guess I'm in the minority by thinking this is overkill. I go over my bike before I leave, put it on a rack and drive to the trail. If the bike has a mechanical issue while riding I fix it with the small bit of tools I carry in my hydration pack. If the bike is so messed up that I need a full tool kit to fix it I would just drive it back home and call it a day... I do think that liner is a good idea if you absolutely have to put the bike inside the car. @S B had mentioned using a shower curtain instead which is a great idea and probably much cheaper.
best solution is to get all the tools with you, or at least most of them, in a tool box, best solution is Kaizen foam. less wasted space, can get more stuff with you, and all sorted, I haven't tried this, but I want to do this eventually, if you want spare parts too, bring box of parts. but I agree with the other advice.
