    Elephants produce infrasound to communicate with each other. The Acoustic Camera was used to investigate how the animals use sounds and perceive vocalizations for communication. In cooperation with the „Mammal Communication Lab“ of the University of Vienna, acoustic measurements were conducted in the Tiger Tops Elephant Camp of the Chitwan Nationalpark in Nepal. The scientists around Angela Stöger-Horwarth and Veronika Beeck are studying animal sound production and use the Acoustic Camera to visualize the sound of elephants communication in wildlife. The Acoustic Camera is used to better understand the language of the elephants: With our technology, the low-frequency sound generated by the animals can be visualized.

    Very cool project! Wonderful application of technology to better our understanding of nature. I was struck with how chatty the elephants are relative to any I’ve seen in a zoo (likely for all the reasons that come to mind). I’m also surprised at how loudly they communicate in close proximity.
    The element configuration is new to me. The larger spread seems intended to improve resolution for the low frequencies elephants reach? Any other benefits of this setup?

      Yes, our Star Array is optimized for measurements of low frequencies and over long distances. The arrangement of the microphones is optimized in this regard: The microphones are arranged closer to the centre, so that even high frequencies can still be easily located.     1:57 short view of visualizing sound localization. Could have at least used spectrogram to show elephant sounds in rest of video

    Im interested in rat vocalizations in a natural habitat. Problem is their vocalizations are ultrasonic
