  • In this video, we take a few days to paddle the Manistee River near Manton, Michigan. This video will show you what you might expect from this stretch of river if you ever decide to do it yourself. In all my kayaking videos I will show you what the bridge crossings look like, as well as the landings, and of course, the flora and fauna as well.
    In a couple of weeks I am leading a group of about 15 on a week-long canoe trip down this river and I thought it best to scout out a section of it before attempting to lead others down it. I have never done this river before, but I had some ideas of what to expect from so many others who have.
    As I was planning this scouting trip, I happened to discover a group of others who were also going to be on the river at the same time, so I decided to hook up with them to check things out.
    This river in northern lower Michigan is a great river for beginner paddlers to tackle, and Chippewa Landing was a great livery to work with in planning the trip. (chippewalanding.com)

    These guys were the ones I was meeting up with. I had a blast on this river for the short time I was there and greatly look forward to leading the group at the end of the month.

    Very cool, David. Headed to the Manistee river in a couple of weeks for an annual float/camping trip that we have been doing off and on since the 60's. We fish/kayak in the Deward area south west of Gaylord downstream from Co Rd C38. Started off as a 3 day canoe trip and has evolved into a long weekend of camping and kayak day trips. Been a bad year for skeeters, hope they let up a little. Thanks for the video, looked like you had a lot of fun.

    Great video. I wear a hat like yours and love it. Like you said for the shade. And because having basal cell carcinomas removed from temple and jaw areas is no fun.

    You keep running the same places as me. Been to Isle Royal in the 60's & 70's. Done the Manistee putting in west of Fredrick (way up) and all the way down. So what's next for you the Rifle?

      I've done some of the more obscure ones. I did the Shiawasse, Clinton, and the Cass rivers. I did the Shiawassee in 1969 and 2010 big change all for the good.

      PS. The Cass river is a good one from below Cass City.

    Another great video! What kind of camera mount did you use? The stability was amazing.

      Ugly Tent In the past I have used this method: ua-cam.com/video/yeyHy-U42YI/v-deo.html But with my new DSLR camera and bigger tripod I just sit it between my legs. Not the safest, but I have never tipped my kayak with my camera in it (knock on wood).

    Dave, Really enjoyed the video, Mi has great rivers, I happen to have a place on the rifle river south of the m-55 bridge, very shallow in many areas, I have a couple of sea eagle kayaks but I am looking for something better on the shallow waters of the rifle river, I am 6'4" and 250lbs, would you recommend your model of kayak or something else?

    • @davidspassage
      @davidspassage  9 років тому +1

      +ben terwellen I'm 6'1" and when I started out I was about 260, so yes, I would definitely recommend it. My kayak is the Ascend D10. I'm not sure if they make the exact one anymore, but I got mine at Bass Pro for like $499 or something several years ago.
