- This is the second leg of our adventure in Northern Michigan on the beautiful and exciting Pine River! Our first leg was a popular section of the Big Manistee River: • The Big Manistee River...
The Pine River is the fastest free flowing river (no dams/impoundments) in the lower peninsula of Michigan in the Huron-Manistee National Forests. Formerly known as the South Branch Manistee River, the Pine is a 53.6-mile-long tributary of the Manistee River.
We did a full thru-paddle of the Pine River starting at Edgetts put in and took at at Low Bridge. This section was 42 miles. Edgetts is considered the upper most put in of floatable water on the Pine and is not for the faint of heart....a very difficult to find and a very steep hill at the rivers edge. Briar Patch is the next put in site down river (about a half mile further) and is much easier.
After Low Bridge the Pine enters the back waters of Tippy Dam and is often nonfloatable due to shallow water so most thru-paddlers end their trips at Low Bridge rather than trying to continue on into Tippy Dam Pond.

We did your trip in 2020/9/15 first night 34 degrees.First time I did the Pine was 1992.There in was a dam then.We did 100miles in two days.Yes, I was beat up .Love every second 👍
The Pine is a great river! Glad it wasn’t 34 degrees when we did it! We were on the river at the same time as you, Sept. 14-16, 2020.
Ear plugs and sometimes ear buds with low playing instrumental music is the only way I survive Craig’s snoring. Lol
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who finds it down right impossible to sleep near a snoring friend! Moving water always helps!
It is a lot of work like he said but every minute is worth it something you will never forget for the rest of your life

That area is so beautiful…got lots of great memories of snowmobiling as a kid around the Cadillac, Houghton Lake and Grayling area.

Great video thanks. We did the Buffalo River in May 2021. We put in at Ponca and took out at Shipps Ferry 130 miles. Sun thru Sat. Buffalo Outdoor Center shuttled our vehicle.
This is just the information I was looking for on the Buffalo thank you so much, we will be checking out this area for our next multi day float. I’d be very interested in any more details you can provide on this trip.
@@jasonwish- We spent the night at Steel Creek campground on Sat night. There are gravel bar campsites everywhere and several campgrounds along the way. We had cell service 3/4 the way. Gilbert has the only store. Here are a couple videos that got us interested. I cant wait to go back....

@@jasonwish- things to checkout while your on the buffalo river. Lost Valley trailhead, big bluff goat trail are 2 awesome pre-float hikes before you head-out on the river. Other stops to see while on the river hemmed-in hollow, bear cave hollow which is a waterfall, eye of the needle 2 mile hard hike but beautiful, twin falls trailhead, and rush landing has a small easy hike to clabber creek.

I live up there and been down many parts, the Color change kayak trip on upper Manistee was awesome but the clam river was my favorite trip , you definitely need to do the clam river trip

My group kayaks the pine in July and raft 2 months before that every year. one of the most beautiful and well kept rivers. We camp at coolwater and it's such a joy seeing that beach😄 Great video!

I love Michigan ! Been snowmobiling and mushroom hunting there for 30 years! And now I’m discovering all the beautiful hiking and kayaking destinations. My favorite state!
You will love buffalo River. I beleive it was the first national river in America. Lots of high bluffs and beaches are gravel. So bring a good pad.
Or a hammock. I usually bring a tent and hammock on river trips. I’m really looking forward to the buffalo river, hopefully the Colonel can get away this year.
@@jasonwish- good small mouth bass fishing. I think it may be catch and release. Not positive though. Fall is a beautiful time. Summer is so hot and humid in Arkansas. And I think the river is lower in summer.

The Pine River looks very similar to my home river of the headwaters of the upper Etowah River in Lumpkin County in northern Georgia. I live above Etowah Falls outside of Dahlonega.
I hope to get on that river one of these days. Would it be fairly nice to paddle during December?

This may be our next river trip. We did the Big Manistee from Hodenpyl dam to Tippy dam a couple years ago. Really enjoyed this video. 👍

The Pine was fantastic! We are looking for a possible river trip in Kentucky at some point...have any recommendations?
@@jasonwish- The Rockcastle is pretty Sweet, but there is some bigger rapids on it that you would likely want to portage around. It has some nice camping options also. The Cumberland is pretty most any where it flows, but the camping seems limited. The Red River through RRG offers some awesome scenery and great camping, but it has some bigger rapids at higher flows. Then you have the Kentucky River Particularly the Palisades Rock formations area. There is other nice rivers that I have not paddled, but I have researched. Feel free to get up with me and I can give you more info on those if you are interested.

Jason, man! I'm loving your series in Northern, MI! Just a note on your camera charger; your camera doesn't necessarily need usb-c to usb-c to charge. It just needs the port that it is plugged into to be USB-PD capable. The ports don't matter, but the standard does, as USB-PD (USB-Power Delivery) is capable of much higher amperage charging. Thank you for showing me some of what I've been missing by staying in Southeastern MI with my kayak so far.
Thanks Ryan, I really appreciate that! I may have misspoke about the camera battery issue on film, but I had a PD anchor power bank with me but I didn't have the USB to USB-C that plugs into the camera...it's the only way to charge it and no adapters can be used either. I now always have a usb-c cable with me and extra batteries!
Hey, love your videos. Came across your review of the Hook kayak. Thinking about getting one myself. How are you liking it?
I still really like it, and would definitely buy it again if needing to stay under the $500 mark. And the main reason for that is I prefer a sit in style, and it Has to have a large storage area in the back for my backpack or dry bag and behind the seat, and in front of me for other gear and small coolers, and it has all the above. I know some reviews talk about the seat not being very comfortable, but I have no issues with it but the only thing I have to compare it to is some cheap pelicans that I own. I probably wouldn’t want to take this style of kayak on lots of Rapids but the class one stuff and below that I do it’s perfect

Rewatching your video right now and getting intel. How was Peterson bridge for hammocks? From your video I see possibility for a couple maybe but can't see entire site... we have 5 guys with hammocks. Wondering if we will need a couple tents
I don’t recall many spots for hammocks at all in the area we camped
unless you walked into the woods out of the camping area. However, up in the campground a little further, there were trees everywhere, but that’s not always convenient when kayak camping. It was a great campground, but noisy when trucks drove over the bridge.

@@HanzgohFilms I think hammocks would be fine, just might be a bit more difficult to find good trees if staying in established campgrounds. If stealth camping, the options would be endless.

Looked like a fun trip - "except for the occasional rock", it didn't look like a particularly rocky river. Were most of the ripples over submerged trees, occasional sandbar? Good that you had pretty consistent current, regardless. Great cruising river!
Apparently I asked too soon. :) Just before and after your last campsite it does look a bit more brisk. Fun stuff!
@@FlyingSquirrelOutdoors I only remember one or two sandbars and yes that last section was very brisk and exciting...would love to go back and do that section again and camp there as well...so many amazing sites along the river banks!

Joel Carminati Well I just finished 100 miles on the Florida trail that I’m still editing and I am currently on the Pine Mountain Trail in Kentucky and then I will have some RV camping adventures with my wife and several small boating and kayaking adventures with the Colonel this summer. And we always try to do one big kayaking trip in mid September. We haven’t decided where yet though.

Nice video!! I got caught on the private property and got escorted out. They were actually very nice about it, and im glad they caught us when they did. We were about to setup camp along the river. We had carried our gear up so far, dumped it in the woods ans were coming back for it when they came across us.

The LMR was smelly, slow at times, noisy and very limited camping options...I only did it because it was an Ohio river that was fairly close that I had not been on yet. I do have some good notes for the LMR as well if you decide on that one.

You need to visit green river lake state park in Kentucky awesome place I go every couple months. Lots of lake shore camping sites

Thanks Nick! Every bit of information on starting and ending points are in the first two minutes of the video. And throughout the video I talk about the numerous camping options along this river and where they are at. It’s a great river and I’m sure we will do it again Someday.

I have not, but the Buffalo river and the current river in Arkansas are on my shortlist. I believe they aren’t too far away from Missouri

I live in south Alabama & I have always want to do something of this sort but not a clue as where to start or where to go
First decide how far you are willing to drive and what time of the year you plan to go. In the winter obviously you would want to stay in the south...I've read about lots of great rivers in Alabama, Geogia, South Carolina, Florida and Texas. Just google search rivers in the state you would like to go to and then look for youtube videos on the river that interest you. Once you decide on a river or area you would like to go, start looking for canoe and kayak liveries that are willing to give you a shuttle ride or a rental if needed, or even spot your car for you at your ending location if you have your own equipment. I've even used Uber this summer. I hid my kayak in the woods where I wanted start and then drove my truck to my ending location and then took an Uber back to where I hid my kayak...that way my truck was there waiting for me when I finished. If you have a kayaking buddy and two vehicles you wouldn't need to do this if close to home, but if traveling a good distance its better to use a shuttle service rather than take two vehicles obviously. I almost died there last March, got pinned under ice cold water in a tree. Good ol adrenaline pulled me out, took a nice cut on my head. Eggets in the spring is not recommended.
Glad you at least made it out alive with a few cuts and bruises and slight psychological degression but I'm pretty sure you'll get right back in there again like the rest of us do just was a little more apprehension and a lot more respect for mother nature because she has none for you

Dang! the water was down nearly a foot for us but just right. Glad you were ok, that sounds freakin scary!
We were highly prepared for the most part, full drysuits with insulation, throw bags... all the safety essentials. But yeah... the river was VERY high and Very fast. Like 9 mph. We ordered helmets as soon as we got home. And definitely bailed on that trip we made it to elm flats.

Yes, I have had several request for this so I plan to put one together soon and have it ready by spring time hopefully.
Been doing the Pine for decades, loved it so much I moved nearby! I don't start at Edgetts too much anymore though. Have started way up river with Horina's help but it has been a long time, curious to maybe try a bit of another branch I've never been on, just upstream from Edgets. The Sturgion (LP) is faster, maybe even parts of the Boardman now with a few dams removed. The Pine has a 7'/mile gradient. The Little Manistee shouldn't be overlooked either if you are advanced and tolerant of having to get out of your boat a lot. The section from 9 Mile Bridge to 6 Mile Bridge is wicked, narrows and goes 12'/mile. Check out my HillOrStream for lots of information on these.

@@jasonwish- The Sturgeon is a fast, narrow, well-cleared channel. 80% tip rate. Tend to smash into the corners! Not nearly as scenic as the Pine but few rivers are. If you do it use Burt Lake SP as your get-out, nothing sweeter than canoeing out into the lake for a nice swim to finish the day.

Am I understanding correctly....a permit is required Memorial Day to Labor Day and outside of that range is OPEN without a permit?
Yes, that is what I read and was told by the canoe livery. Obviously between those two dates the river can get very busy and this helps keep it from being overcrowded and overused. I believe the permit is only a few dollars.
The random campsites along the lower section that aren't part of a campground are illegal to camp at. Between Elm Flats and Low Bridge you are supposed to camp a quarter mile off the river. Tough in practice, kind of have to know where the land is State/Federal/Consumers Power/private. In practice you want to be out of site and use a stove or twig-stove instead of a campfire when stealth camping.
Its too bad that area is illegal to camp in since there were so many amzing sites right on the river. The Pine has probably been our favorite river yet, hopefully we can thru paddle the entire Big Manistee one of these days. Have you been on that one much?
@@jasonwish- A bit, I'd still like to do the upper pieces from Deward that are a little quicker. I sometimes will get in and paddle upstream for an hour or two and then float back. Used to do the same on the Muskegon, the two are fairly similar, big with moderate current. Motorized boats to contend with in the lower sections. The Little Muskegon was nice too, not quite as wild as the Little Manistee. I spend most of my time on the Pine and the Little Manistee.
What type of kayak do you use, and why?
I have a Perception Hook 10.5. I think sit ins are more stable than sit on tops and I love the storage capacity, lots of room in front, on the sides and right behind the seat, but most importantly for me, the huge area in the very back that holds my backpack perfectly.

1.) you cannot camp within the Pine River corridor EXCEPT at NFS campgrounds and Coolwater (private) Most land outside the NFS owned section is privately owned, no camping allowed. 2.) From Memorial Day to Labor Day you MUST have a permit to paddle the more popular sections and they are a pain to acquire, used to have a ranger station you could go get, now you order online $$. 3.) You are asked to stay OFF the river before 9 am and after 6 pm to allow anglers unfettered access. 4.) it is Good Practice to have PFDs visible and to carry a river map while on the river. Jason, I enjoy your videos, but suggest a bit more research prior to taking such a trip AND informing your audience.
The Sturgeon is the fastest flowing river in the LP.

Up in the nose of the kayaks....definitely should have had them on going under that down tree. The water was down a little and most of the river was very shallow and gentle.
