  • Here's some footage of the aftermath of the 6J46 Peak Forest - Salford Hope Street derailment in Audenshaw on Friday the 6th September 2024. The train which was hauled by GBRF Class 66 No's. 66747 'Made in Sheffield' & 66729 'Derby County' derailed above Sidmouth Street with 7 HYAs leaving the track. The train was trailing roughly over 2,000 tonnes in weight. Thought we'd come and catch some footage of it after work as it's not everyday a train derails literally a stone's throw around the corner from where you live. After speaking to Network Rail staff and originally being told it may take weeks to sort it out, we've later been told that due to the severity of the incident it may now take months before everything is back to normal. The Footage captured was taken from the Ashton Canal wall at Ryecroft & Audenshaw Reservoirs.
    Derailment HYA Wagon removal:
    66747 + 5 HYAs - • GBRf Class 66 No. 6674...
    66712 + 1 HYA - • GBRf Class 66 No. 6671...

Talk about being on the spot lads! Well amazingly i was, well at Denton, so caught the Biomass first 66779/66790 that was nice doubleheader, past without incident then learned it failed around Mossley tunnel! Then caught 747/729 trundle d past and within three minutes the derailment. So strange as in it was the first time ive been to Denton as i had some business at Smiths News at Bredbury. So two x double headers and both with issues!! It wasent GBRf,s morning! So are we going to get some tasty diverts? Hopefully yes. Great footage there and as you say its not often you get a major derailment quite literally on your doorstep! Cheers Nick.

Cheers Nick, we actually found out from a postman we know as we've been working locally all week. Yeah we heard about the Biomass failure. We were gonna be getting the Biomass through Guide Bridge for a while at the moment anyway due to the bridge replacement at Castleton but now it's gonna be months before this gets back to normal. Noticed the Ashburys is Up & Down at Guide Bridge then passed GB872 all next week.

This is at the bottom of my street. All I can say is the noise was incredible. Sounded like it was outside my door but it’s 150 yards away. As I came out the train had just come to a stop and there was large plumes of dust in the air. People who had managed to walk under the bridge before it was blocked off said the wheels were sticking through the floor. There was already railway workers dashing around so I’m under the impression some work was going on on the track? Maybe that’s something to do with it. It’s still there now as I type. I imagine it will be some job to clear it. Especially since there’s no room either side of the tracks. It’s all houses and gardens.

We only live a couple of minutes away from here and were actually working on Belvor Avenue at the time but had zero chance of hearing it as we were using power tools when it happened. Yeah we were chatting to the Network Rail staff and they told us that it's more likely gonna be months rather than weeks before it's all back to normal. They'll more than likely bring a Kirow crane down the other track once they know the bridge is structurally sound.

Admittedly as a rail enthusiast of 40 years+, nice catch but as someone who has been in the industry for over 30 years working on the signalling side how on earth did you manage to get that close without being arrested fir trespassing?

We were careful with how we filmed this footage, the first clip we just climbed the canal wall and the last clip we just placed our camera on a tripod next to the track and used it's remote control to operate it, hence the lack of focus when we zoomed in on the train as we couldn't see the screen properly.

I saw this thundering through Manchester victoria the other day and a goods train thundering through hebden bridge, It worries me at times, they are so long. Anyway thankfully nobody was injured. Thank god it didn't happen on a stretch of line with passenger trains.

In the USA, R J Corman/Hulcher/Herzog/Cranemasters would have had this cleared up within 12 hours... (the damaged bridge might take them a couple of days more)... 😉

But in the UK the track is running through folk's back gardens on top of an embankment so you can't get the lifting gear in. And then there is nowhere to put the wagons at the side. No doubt they will tow away as much as they can within a few hours but it looks like they will need to unload some of the stone from the wagons before they can recover those tipped over.

    • @bigcasey4143

We do things differently here in UK... The severity of this derailment would undoubtedly have fully taxed the resources of R J Corman. it may be that the wagons will have to be emptied & cut up into manageable sizes for removal, those that cannot be moved, that is... retired train driver...

Wonder if the bridge was to blame? Looking underneath , it seems the steel sheeting is a bit rotten , although what I have seen of the structural girders , I noted nothing obviuos , although this I have taken from another vlog. I note there's a length of rail in the 4 foot, and now wonder if any other materials were left lying around for idle hands to interfere with. Looks like that's the Hope street. That'll teach 'em to pinch what was probably the nearest thng we had to a decent day job at Peak ! Right in me own backyard - yikes !! My dad lived right next to where the new-ish flatblocks are. At least speed ought to have been around 20 or so , I've not been over there for a few years, as I'm retired now. Incidentally, it was I who was the , er , 'star' of your 'Darth Vader ' tones vid at Guide Bridge. Turn your back for 5 minutes and this what happens !

    • @trainsurfers
      @trainsurfers  9 днів тому

Couldn't really say tbh, walked under that bridge to and from work thousands of times, even when trains are passing over but never really noticed any structural damage, in truth didn't really pay close attention as it's not the thing to do when walking under bridges. We've got images of the rail snapped clean in 2 below one of the HYAs so maybe that might've been the cause, but all hearsay at the moment. We were talking to NR staff and were initially told it may be a few weeks but now they reckon it might take months before everything is fixed and back up running again. It was the Hope Street (the 6J46) and nearly fully upto weight also so that wouldn't have helped either. Yeah remember you telling us at GB when awaiting the signal change in 66040 how you enjoyed the Peak Forest jobs. Yeah only 20 or so max round that curve so speed wasn't the issue.

According to some comments I read it was the drivers fault because Labour gave them a 15%pay rise (one person claimed 80% rise) or they got 70k a year and can't even steer straight.

@@pbear6251 On closer inspection we've been looking at some of the pictures we've manage to get and the track beneath the last HYA wagon has completely snapped. They might have to replace the bridge in truth but only time will tell. We bet there is a lot of head scratching at the moment wondering how the clear up operation is going to happen. Wasn't difficult at all no, the first clip we just climbed a wall next to the canal where the engines we stopped and the last clip was accessed via Audenshaw Reservoirs.

@@trainsurfers Here in North America the railroads have machines on the ground as soon as possible to reopen the line. They usually push the derailed cars that are too badly damaged to the side and rerail the cars that aren't. Then they deal with the damaged cars later when things have gotten back to normal.
