They need to release the digital, 4k and bluray at the same time and let US show you what sells more.

The Blu-ray is just fine. You don’t need the 4k release, especially if there isn’t one. It’d be pointless to wait for it. In the end we’re in it for the movies not the releases. Just buy the movie if you’re interested in it.

For me, an upscaled Blu-ray on a QLED 4K TV using a Panasonic 820 is almost indistinguishable from the 4K disc. Yes HDR does make a small difference but I still enjoy my BD collection and see no need to upgrade all of them to 4K

You do realise you can get into your tv specs and adjust the BT 2020. And change the colour,so you can make a SDR Blu-ray Disc pop like a 4K HDR…

Blu-ray is completely fine, especially for new movies. The difference between Blu-ray and 4k for newer movies is minimal. 4k is better for older movies.

100% disagree. If you do not have a high end 4K TV you are not seeing the beauty and majesty that 4K discs bring. If you do not have a high end 4K blu rayer like the Panasonic UB9000 you are not seeing everything 4K disc offers.
I have both including a 7.1 surround sound and 4K disc absolutely blow away blu-ray in nearly every case. Even my wife who knows nothing about the technology behind 4K notices the differences and we both love getting a new movie in the mail and watching it in glorious 4K with Atmos sound.
Blu-Ray discs do not have HDR nor do they have ATMOS so there alone is a big difference.

I’m hooked on getting the BEST PICTURE/AUDIO in my physical media collection. I wish I wasn’t like that..because my wallet would have more in it. BUT! Over the years, blu ray’s have really stepped up in their transfers. I was watching one of my 4k’s over the weekend and decided to look at the blu ray to compare it. There wasn’t much different. I mean-there was a difference because I was looking for the difference..but if I hadn’t, I don’t think I’d have noticed a difference.

Honestly for a big studio release like this I just reserve it at our local library. I have both Challengers and Abigail on hold. I’m number 62 in line for Challengers, but there are 26 copies in the system, so my wait will only be a few weeks. Abigail will take longer as I’m at 42 in line but there are only four copies. That doesn’t bother me as I have a bunch of others on hold and the pile of 4Ks I’ve purchased over the last few months. If I love any of the movies I picked up from the library I’ll go ahead and purchase once the 4K comes out. Thanks for the great video.

It’s probably not going to happen
1- Universal has yet to release Redfield and The Last Voyage Of The Dementer of 4K and it’s been more than 6 months since the Blu ray were released
2- Abigail did not do well at the cinemas
3- Studios are going to be picky on what format they release their films on in the future
4- and there is also one of the boutique labels as a option if they can secure the rights of course .

Cinema Sickness/Retro Rest Stop said it best by referring to Blu-ray as a Goldilocks format; i.e. better than DVD, although perhaps not as incrementally sharp as 4K, but it's a happy middle and is more durable than DVD, so in many cases, the Blu-ray will suffice.

It's really just comes down to some factors. Is the movie shot on film, is it an older bluray like pre 2012. Almost every new digitally shot films 1080p looks pretty much the same as the 4k.

As GoT might say today…Black Friday is coming. My universal policy with these situations is to grab a rental if I’m really interested. I also do a lot of pawning and grab a lot of fresh releases for next to nothing if I’m willing to wait a couple of months. Release day purchases are pretty rare for me as I have a pretty good backlog to fill the space. I definitely don’t do a lot of blind buys and am mostly interested in repeat viewings for a brand new physical purchase anymore. Interested in Abigail for sure. Have only had a 4K player and TV since Christmas-ish, so I’m a little late to the party.

As a dual-format guy, I'd ideally like to have both. My issue is separate full-price purchases--I don't have the cash to spring for that (mostly). So when it comes to making decisions I go with 2 criteria: 1) is the scan 2K or 4K? and 2) is there going to be a 4K release?
If the 4K is dual-format, I'll pay the additional price; it's fair. I always buy on sale anyway.
If the scan is 2K, then the Blu is the best you're gonna get (I do NOT pay full price for upscales), so I buy Blu. If the scan is 4K, I'll usually wait...if it hasn't come out after a year, then I'll buy the Blu rather than risk missing out (like RED EYE, waited too long for price drop and lost out entirely when it went OOP).
If Universal was open about their plan, I'd be less pissed, but since they're a corporation interested in milking the public...I'm sure that's why they do what they do this. But if they were testing the waters, we could understand.

4K Blu-Ray is usually fantastic, and just Blu-Ray is great too. With decent modern 4K upscale technology (TV/Player/AMP), a film that merits a 4K release will likely yield the optimum, else just Blu-Ray upscaled, and in some cases DVD can be a great economical option, especially used ones...

It all depends on a couple of things number one and most important is the TV, then the player. I have a Sony 900 L 65 inch and is it upscale is amazing with standard bluerays. Yes the 4K is better but It’s not a really big deal for me personally if there’s no 4K. What’s important to me Is I can buy a Blu-ray and own the movie. Abigail Blu-ray looks really good. I just watched it last night. Now don’t get me wrong I’ll always choose the 4K disc over to regular Blu-ray but if there’s no option, it really doesn’t bother me and I don’t double dip ever so I’m buying 4K. Also, Abigail was a great movie it’s my pic for movie of the year so far hopefully it gets to sequel. Everybody that seen it really likes it and it seems to be selling really well at my store.

In many cases, the Blu-ray is perfectly fine for me and I won't spend more on the 4K unless the increased cost is minimal (provided a regular Blu-ray is included since I avoid 4K-only releases).
Heck, I have certain movies in my collection where the VHS is all I need. I rarely watch those particular movies or love the nostalgia of VHS, so there are cases when I've bought the VHS for a dollar at a thrift store and really don't feel the urge to buy it on DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K, particularly if the movie is adequate or just okay, but not so amazing as to justify a costlier upgrade.
It's all a matter of taste and personal choices, of course. :)

Most of my focus is on films that have been out a while. If there's a 4K, then it's hard to go for the Blu-ray. I wonder if we'll regret not upgrading to 4K down the road as physical media inevitably shrinks. I watched my Arrow The Bird with the Crystal Plumage Blu-ray yesterday and wondered if I should upgrade to the 4K or not. It's hard to justify right now, and I am happy with the Blu-ray, but I think 10 years from now I could at least be partially bothered by not having the 4K. That one, maybe less than others because it's from a 4K scan and the newer one doesn't offer much new. But, like, I see people say they're not upgrading 10+ year Shout Blu-rays to 4K, and I get it, but I could see them possibly kicking themselves for not upgrading 10 years from now. For a release that's nowhere near your favorite, perhaps it's fine. I think it just depends title to title and how much each one means to you.

I used to have a multi region player in the UK, and I'm having to decide which early region A discs I purchased need to be replaced. Do I spend £12.99 for a Blu-ray or £25 for a 4K. Judging by how often I use the player, it's got to be the Blu-ray, I only own movies now that are no longer accessible via streaming for free, for instance last xmas Elf was only available to rent on Amazon which meant dusting off our copy. There's a growing void that streaming doesn't fill, my next purchase will be the Crow to replace my old region A version.

I have a silly reason for kinda liking when universal doesn't do a 4k. They always include the DVD as well, which means on my DVL 700, the combo Laserdisc/DVD player, I can play a disc that came in the newest ever release, as well as the first laserdisc from 1978, a player with 46 years of compatibility. All this while still getting the new movie in the best possible home video quality as well.

Love 4k when the disc plays. They're so fickle, though, that I refuse to buy 4k unless a blu-ray is included. Unfortunately, seems some studios (Warner) are now only releasing 4k with no blus, included or stand alone. For example, Twister, you have the option of the 2008 blu or the 2024 4k. There is no 2024 blu.

Thanks for this video, sometimes i feel the fomo on 4ks but in reality blurays are atill great and im still very happy with them. Sometimes i think what about 10 years from now will i not want the 4k? Maybe? But im sure i would still be happy with the blurays and just be happy that my collection would have grown 10x more than 1x with 4ks

For me, it depends on the title. Action/Horror titles I would prefer a 4K, as they would benefit more with HDR. Compared to dramas or comedies. Movie like Air I am content with on blu-ray and will not buy a 4K if it comes out. You mentioned Last Voyage of the Demeter. I am still holding out for the 4K. Has been almost a year since it came out.

I'll wait for Abigail to hit 4k through Universal or Turbine.
I was really hoping Renfield would get a 4k, but if it doesn't happen by Halloween, I'm getting the Turbine release.
Still waiting for Beast to get a 4k tho 😭

I really want to see Abigail and last voyage. For being of their both dark movies I would like to have them on 4K so I've held off on getting them and seeing them. Hopefully we can get them in 4k at some point I'll be the one that will buy them because I passed on the blu-ray. But if I see the Blu-ray for like five bucks during Prime day or Black Friday I may pick it up but I really don't want to support their decisions do not release on 4K

Turbine announced they're doing a 4K of Abigail soon. Thankfully, I held out instead of grabbing the blu. Germany's been picking up the slack on the 4K front. Really dig what Capelight's been doing recently too since they're putting out 4Ks of Immaculate and Late Night with the Devil. I'm hoping one of them will get ahold of The First Omen as well.

I don't look at studio Blu-rays unless they're like $7 or less. I'm rarely THAT interested in newer movies. I'm not buying Abigail or the other one before I watch AND like them. Then, I'm still probably waiting for a 4K. The Blu-ray will be there if the 4K never comes. I don't care much about slips if the art is the same as the wrap. If there's a reversible wrap, then it's nice to have different art on the slip vs. the wrap.

If I want to watch the movie, I'll buy the Blu-Ray. But if I already watched it in the theater, and want to own it (but don't need to re-watch it right away), then if it's only Blu-Ray I'll hold off. Especially if it's someone like Universal with a habit of this.
I saw Abigail and Last Voyage of the Demeter in the theaters, and would like to own both. But I don't trust Universal so I'm waiting to see if there's a 4K down the road. And if not, then the Blu-Ray will probably be cheaper by then.
However Challengers, I didn't get a chance to see it in theaters. So I picked up the Blu-Ray so I can watch it.
I also picked up the Poor Things Blu-Ray when that came out, even though I saw it in the theaters. That one, because I absolutely don't expect Disney to put out a 4K of it (and their Blu-Rays tend to go out of print/hard to find faster than other studios). Blu-Ray is the best we'll get, so might as well just grab it.

Ken your question is one I grapple with almost every purchase. There have been too many times I bought this much more expensive 4k version only to find out either the movie was just ok, loawsy, or hear later people thought the blue ray version was actually better. Sometimes they do to much to the 4k actually making look kinda horrible. Still it's a hard habit for me to break. I always seem to gravitate to the 4k especially because the sound is improved too. Dolby Atmos for instance. ❓😌 So confusing. Especially when it comes to horror. I love horror, but the sound usually doesn't make me just go to the 4k. I usually just want the Blu-ray unless there is an option for both. I hardly ever buy DVD. Sad, but the picture quality in my opinion is to horrible. That being said I have over 3k in old DVDs. I bought since they first came out. There are still several that I have that either aren't available yet in a higher format, or just were a one time watch. There are a few that I just haven't updated too. 👍

For me 4K is only necessary if the film is one that has scenes that will highlight it so for example Twister hell yes a 4K will be worth it but with Challengers there's no scenes that would really benefit much from it.

If it's about maybe down the road a movie might get a 4K. Then I would be fine with blu ray. I bought "Last Voyage of the Demeter" I bought it when I found out how good it was, on blu ray, I could upgrade it if it comes on 4K or maybe not.
I don't need everything on 4K. It's nice to have a choice. I am more about restoration of movies I love.

Considering the ridiculous gouging with the 4Ks, I am satisfied waiting until they go on sale or the Bluray. I realize the production cost but, yeah, I am not totally buying into a 4K costing 30%-60% more to produce.
And we believe that sales are booming and generating higher prices. If sales are booming, it should be helping to reduce production costs, just like it did with Bluray and DVD.

For me, it’s usually all about the price. If there’s only a $5 difference, I’ll go ahead and get the 4K. But if it’s down to a $15 blu-ray or a $30-$50 4K, I’ll buy the blu-ray and let my 4K player upscale it.

Bluray can kick butt if it has Dolby Atmos...depends really on how good source sound was mixed by engineer. Thus it i s where it all starts. Last night watched Cap America- Winter Soldier and older bluray Cruel Intentions and the bluray DTS HD and sound was crappy. No point having 4 k for shit production sound mix. "Cruel Intentions" definitely needs 4k!!!I I watched my Madeloruan Season 2 4k and the Atmos mix ....wow Night n Day massive difference. It all depends on the Source and Quality

I think that the studios are more interested in licensing distribution rights out to boutique labels, so we are heading into an era of ultra expensive boutique labels. There is also a move by studios to put out premium collector (chunky box) editions, but this is not so appealing since the boxes contain the same discs as the studio standard editions.
