Brilliant! Practicing rudiments (or any patterns) on the pedals will help you play complex patterns (obviously) like you would hear in Meshuggah, Lamb of God, Fear Factory, and, many technical bands. But for speed and endurance this lesson is spot on.

    Hello Marthyn!
I absolutely love your contents and your double bass mastery helped me to develop good speed on my feet. I used to straggled to pass 200 bpm but now I can play up to 230 bpm. Thank you for that!
That’s been said, I also love practicing rudiments with feet. I believe I gained ridiculous amount of control on my feet by doing that. I’m not trying to arguing with you but my goal is to gain speed and control with my feet. Ultimately, I want to have a control on my feet like I do on my hands. So combining your double bass mastery and rudimental exercise gave me the resolute that I want.
Anyway, I love your channel and your curriculum. Thanks for the good stuff.

Agree 100% with your advice! I've spent some time on certain drumming forums (and avoided them more often than not due to "opinions") and it's funny how many years it took before there were enough genuinely fast drummers around giving correct advice on building speed.
And the reality is, is that like you say it's not bad to play rudiments with your feet (I use the first pages of Stick Control as control, relaxation and power exercises), but if you want to be fast at single strokes, then you have to practice single strokes.
Virgil Donati himself says in his book that "Single strokes are the foundation of all double bass drumming, and perhaps the most important and functional stroke in our arsenal. I have devoted several chapters to exploring the many possibilities and applications of the ubiquitous single stroke roll." And this is coming from a drummer I'm sure we're all familiar with in the insane complexity of the stuff he plays!

Soooo good!!! It's so strange to see pop/rock drummers who can't play fast double bass try to tell you how to play fast double bass. It's like they are extrapolating from what worked on their hands to their feet which is just not the same thing

    • @king-manu2758

Thomas Lang would maybe be an exception. He can play really fast and he does recommend a double bass training based on rudiments and dynamics just like hand technique. However to play fast singles that's all not really necessary.

Thank you Marthyn. In the video those beaters extend beyond the center of the drumhead, and looks like they almost hit you on the top of your foot. I play without shoes, and sometimes, depending on where the ball of my foot is on the foot board, I will hit myself with it. (very annoying) You must have your pedals dialed in so close to the top of your foot, as well as muscle memory that you don't have that problem? I also find that setting the beaters farther from the head gives me faster/ better response along with medium tension on the spring. Some guys have their beaters 1 inch away from the head and the tension cranked all the way up, I just can't play like that. No power or control. I am using Trick Drum Bigfoot pedals, and have been tweeking the settings ever so slightly for months to get them dialed in. It also looks like you get maximum beater travel, with minimal footboard travel. I will try to see if I could reduce the amount of travel on my footboard and/ or bring it lower to the floor. Again, thank you for all of your wisdom. I am a new drummer, and love playing double bass!!!

I totally agree with your statement about paradiddles, I’ve done that and indeed, my foot then “refused” to play non stop with either foot, it felt awkward. So it slowed down my single stroke playing, just like you said. Your earlier video about calf vs shin muscle and move heel vs move toes really hit home for me too. From getting foot cramps to now playing both faster and more relaxed. Just subscribed! You got some great content on your channel!

This was an exellent advice. Im just starting to (for most parts withouth a dedicated teacher) and it seemed so logical to use rudiments in the beginning.however, I was wondering that if practicing without drumset with just feet heel DOWN would be different. More like a co-ordination practice and this wouldn't hinder your practice ? Any thoughts on this one?
I totally agree with finding the bounce. It is like the Full Stroke with hands.

I just wanted to say, thank you for the heel toe video, with John L. I have been trying the double stroke for 2 years with very little progress, as I was using the flat foot technique. I didnt know why I was making no progress. I think this video explained it. So a week or so ago I found that vid, and I decided, in order to play this I must change my approach. I think in about a week I will start with the metronome as I will have the technique comfortable. The 2 or so years of playing flat foot have enabled me to get the motion pretty quick. So that time wasnt wasted. So Thank again, I Love this channel, keep up the good work!!!!

I do have a question for you, Marthyn. I've been rebuilding my technique from scratch, and currently working at low speeds (120-130). I'm having a lot of trouble being fully relaxed at these tempos, I feel like I have too much muscular engagement and I'm hesitant to move on to higher tempos before addressing it. That being said, I am talking about playing 15 minutes straight of non-stop single strokes, most recently at 127bpm.
One of the issues I've been trying to work on is developing power with my left leg (as it lags behind my right) using a sort of whole-leg transfer of energy starting from the top and pulsing the ankle at the end. This is what I've always done for power, but in your demonstration for both flat-foot and heel-up was that your whole leg appears to be more rigid. I do remember working on the flat-foot technique several years ago. Is this something that you feel I should revisit for slower (

    • @davidpardy
      @davidpardy 2 роки тому

Well, I went back and looked through your past videos, and your video on the Flat Foot technique has given me all I need for the technical side of things. And as far as the relaxation side goes, I reduced the spring tension quite a bit and suddenly it's not so difficult!

@@chaosercan yes especially for slower and mid tempos, and then with stuff over 200 it doesn’t effect it since your still applying pressure from contracting your quads. I noticed with light beaters it’s a lot harder to keep the momentum needed for a clean execution

Sounds like your body makes it a habbit to go to what its comfortable with. My advise would be you know this happends so focus on it so you know when it happends and change it back. Start at 200bpm and slowly move up and try to go as far as you can without switching back to heel toe. When it does happend slow back down and do it again. I think being aware and letting your body know that you don't want that is really helpful.
