  • Bonanza - Episode 53 - Vengeance - Hoss accidentally kills Willie the town drunk. His remorse may not be enough to stop Willie's hate-filled brother who only wants revenge even though the townspeople know it wasn't Hoss' fault.
    Vengeance
    Director: Dick Moder
    Writer: Marion Parsonnet
Stars: Michael Landon, Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 11 February 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
When Carl (James Best), the son of former Ponderosa foreman Will Reagan (Will Wright), is reported killed, Adam Cartwright decides to investigate. Riding to the border town of Plata, Mexico, Adam has ostensibly arrived to claim the body, but is actually seeking out the reasons for Carl's sudden death. As expected, he learns a lot more than he bargained for-but he may never live to tell about it. Written on rottentomatoes.com
    Reviews:
"Main characters: Red Twilight and Mary
Bonanza character: All the Cartwright's are involved
In this episode, Hoss tries to be the nice guy that he is and stop a friend from getting into trouble outside the saloon. But a simple act of friendship turns deadly when the man falls, hits his head, and dies. The girlfriend blames Hoss and tells the brother, Red, when he rides into town that it's Hoss's fault.
This is a case of vengeance on Joe's part when Hoss is shot while out trying to come to terms with the shooting. Joe is mad and is determined to kill the man who shot Hoss.
The character actor who plays Red Twilight is Adam Williams. he almost always plays a bad guy.
Dead: 3" Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com
"This episode has Dan Blocker trying to disarm a drunken Keith Richards when he knocks Richards down and Richards hits his head and dies. Purely an accident, even Beverly Tyler, Richard's girlfriend agrees with that after a while.
But Adam Williams who is Richards's brother comes to town and he waits for a proper time and shoots him from a distance in the back. He uses a large caliber buffalo gun and only a big guy like Hoss Cartwright might have survived it. As it is it was touch and go.
The story switches to Little Joe at this point and fans of the series know in his younger days Michael Landon had one quick temper that didn't lessen all that much with maturity. The question is can the rest of the family keep him in line until the proof is there for an arrest and for justice to take its course.
The episode belongs to Michael Landon and to guest star Adam Williams who specialized in mean villains on the big screen and small. You wouldn't this man on your trail." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

My family used to watch Bonanza when we first came to the US in 1982. It was our favorite tv show. We did not speak English at the time, but somehow we understood everything that was going on. I was a 4-6 year old kid at the time and did not know what was going on most of the time, but each member of our family had a favorite character between Ben, Adam, Hoss, and Little Joe. Great times, and now after some 40 years later I find this and I have now watched over 20 episodes in about a week's time. What great quality television!!!

A very fine episode with superior performance from sensible Adam (Pernell Roberts). Adam Williams, playing Red Twilight, who is out to avenge his brother's accidental death at Hoss's hands, also delivers a credible maniacal performance, matched by Little Joe's vengeful streak. Engaging final fist fight.

The song "Careless Love" suits Little Joe very much . The lyrics were very simple but the lyrics represented the real feeling of a newly grown up young man . Some of the lyrics said , when the careless love gone . I cried last night and the night before , tonight I cry no more. I love my brothers and papa too . And then he repeated " I love my brothers and papa too" for two times . Michael Landon sang this song very softly and was remarkable and the song represented how a simple child-like young guy love his father & brothers deeply as well as all his careless love to the girls 😂😂😂

Adam has been seen in a nightshirt with - roughly described - a white background and red stripe like design, in a few episodes. I spotted it on Little House on the Prairie, years later - Mr. Olsen was wearing it ! I swear it was the same night shirt they sent up from the central costumes department ! Either that, or the Ponderosa was closer to Walnut Grove than they admitted - and they shared such things ! LOL

costume departments at the various studios. It makes sense that some costumes - such as night shirts - would seldom get used, and could last for literally years. As a side note, it was sort of interesting that the 'Candy' character on Bonanza was often wearing what looked like some of the early costume pieces that Adam wore like the red shirt / black leather vest combo.

@@linsqopiring6816 Probably only the first and second seasons, then they ALL pretty much had their 'regular costumes' set ! I thought Adam looked good in the red and black - it really looked good with his dark hair, and hazel eyes.
The first episode that comes to mind when Adam wore the red shirt and black leather vest was " The Savage" and I seem to remember that in the episode " The Sisters" he wore the red shirt in a scene or two, also. It varied those first two seasons or so. He was also seen wearing a grey shirt, a brown shirt and a white shirt back then, too, mostly with his black jeans and black hat. After that, he pretty much wore his signature " Man in Black" ( ! ) outfit, for the most part - which was always my preferred costume, overall. It really set him apart - clothing wise - from the other three Cartwrights who wore more 'colourful' costume shades including green, brown, grey, blue, etc. :)

From a visual point of view, the perfect boy/man (at least for me. Of course it's a matter of taste).
One of the most beautiful men ever.

Little Joe was the youngest son of the family.. There was a big distance of the age among the three sons. From the episode of " Inger my Love" Adam at least older than Hoss for six years , therefore , I think Hoss at least older than Little Joe for 3-5 years . Because when the father Ben met Hoss's mother was a poor man in "nger my love" but was a well dressed rich man when he met Joe's mother in "Marie my love" . Therefoe, Adam should older than little Joe at least 10 years. (In real life, Pernell Roberts & Dan Blocker older than Michael Landon for more than 8 years ) Adam was mature , calm and gentle . Hoss was also gentle and caring about his father and brothers .
Little Joe was Ben's youngest and most beloved son. Actually he was spoiled severely by the father Ben. In the first episode of season 1 , Adam had already complained this to Ben . But Ben made himself an excuse . Little Joe was spoiled and like a wild horse difficult to control . His temper is hot and very emtional . In Joe's eyes , there was only right or wrong , no grey zone. He expressed his emotion and feeling in a very straight way. When he happy,he laughed , sometimes he even played childish tricks to his elder brothers. When he sad , he cried . When he angery , he would fight and was always the first ones who streched out his fists to others even towards his elder brothers . But we could not deny , Little Joe also a kind hearted person and loved his father and brothers very much .
He was at his very young age , only 22 years old who always liked to chase after the girls just as Adam said 😂😂😂

Hoss was 6 years younger than Adam.

Near the end of episode 53, bad guy Red reins up at the Ponderosa, and shoots the helpful hand twice. The hand falls. Red goes into the house. Joe and Adam show up, and see the hand lying on the ground, shot. Then they move towards the house. When they come out, after Joe is stopped from shooting Red by Adam, and Hoss makes it down, they're all good with how everything would up. But what about the hand? He wasn't seen being carted off, and no one asked about him again - but Joe and Adam saw his condition when they arrived. Wouldn't the sheriff have the last word and say that even though Red wouldn't hang because Hoss lived, he would hang because of the Ponderosa hand he shot. Did the hand survive then? Oh, the loose ends.
