  • Bonanza - Episode 77 - Day of the Dragon - His search for the two men who kidnapped his bride-to-be, Su Ling, will soon take angry Chinese warlord, General Tsung, from San Francisco to the Ponderosa where Little Joe has been challenged to explain how he won the girl in a poker game.
    Day of the Dragon
    Director: Don McDougall
    Writer: John T. Dugan
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 3 December 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
Sue Ling (Lisa Lu), a Chinese slave girl purchased by the infamous General Tsung (Richard Loo), is kidnapped and held for ransom by low-lifes Gordon (Mort Mills) and Barrett (Harry Lauter). But when Joe Cartwright plays poker with the two kidnappers, he unwittingly ends up with Sue Ling as his "winnings." Meanwhile, General Tsung and his minions cut a murderous swath through the region in search of the missing girl.
    Reviews:
"Michael Landon wins from Mort Mills in a poker game a Chinese slave girl Lisa Lu. What Mills doesn't tell Landon is that he has stolen her from exiled Chinese feneral Richard Loo who wants her back. Loo kills Mills and is now going to the Ponderosa to press his claim.
What starts asa pretty funny episode turns quite deadly. Loo had quite a career in the 40s playing sinister Japanese chaacters. Loss is just as sinister here.
Rounding out the guest cast is Philip Ahn playing a Chinese doctor in Virginia City. As for Lisa Lu she scores well as the Chinese grl in a strange and wondrous new place called America.
Nicely told story." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com
"The episode begins when Little Joe wins a poker hand from two visitors while in Virginia City. Little Joe believes that one of the visitors had put up a horse on his bet, however the bet turns out to be a Chinese young girl name Su Ling. And needless to say, Ben is not happy when Little Joe brings the young woman to the house.
Su Ling was actually brought over to American by a war-lord named General Mu Tsung that is looking for her when she was basically kidnapped by the two visitors that were playing poker with Joe. It seems that the General has feeling for Su Ling and goes to lengths to find the young woman and wants her to return with him. But Su Ling not only has the Cartwright's but also is now working for a Chinese Doctor where she feel that she has finally found a place in a foreign country. When General Tsung finds out that Su Ling is living with the Cartwright, his knife toting buddies and himself will make the Cartwrights pay.
This episode is somewhat more interesting than the regular Chinese outsider visiting the Cartwright ranch. Instead of being introduced to a stage full of laundry cleaners or servant, this episode shows that Chinese people contributed to life in the rural west. Lisa Lu is excellent as the young Chinese girl that has more talent than just smiling at the camera which makes the episode better than expected." Written by kfo9494 on IMDb.com

Emancipation does not mean to be free. It literally means to "free out of the hand" but does nothing for a people conditioned for inferiority and discrimination. Soldiers are debriefed when released from an enemy before being returned to general or military population. No forty acres or mules but plenty of legal and illegal violence, discrimination.

@n/a I recently saw on UA-cam a video made by Missouri University on slavery in Missouri where they were plentiful but used in smaller numbers for farming than in the large numbers on the southern plantations. I commented I wished the video had also gone more in to what happened to them after they were freed. Did they just stay on those farms anyway? Were they paid by the farmers and could the farmers afford to pay them or were they just fed for working on the farms? Did they just stay on the farms not having anywhere else to go but could now leave if they chose?

Maybe because she has a daughter who is a successful musician playing traditional songs. Successful enough to have a bio at wiki. Landon seems quite attracted to her, see the scene under the birdcage when he puts her hand on his thigh. Who would't because she's as cute as it comes. I love 💕🤗 that Bonanza showcased all the races in their episodes. Also they instilled history about true to life people and events. I always reach the real names of title characters mentioned in the episodes.

Nice episode. I don't see Bonanza winning any awards in woke Hollywood today, but this was a very mature portrayal of period China., given the twin periods involved. 1840s and 1960s.

Leaves his cash on the table. Doesn't clarify if he will win the horse or the girl... I'm betting that he wins the girl and doesn't like it.... Yes. :D Su Ling: Master manipulator. :D Bizarre that Joe mentions Hop Sing but we don't see him. "Hop Sing says her name means tinkling bell of virtue i" They don't explain why he is not there. If not there, how did Joe talk to him? Oh, there he is. They just didn't want him in the first scene where it would have made the most sense for him to be there. "She bottomless well of ignorance." Quite the sentence for an English learner. :D But it was great! 27:55 Why isn't Joe telling her to take the nursing job?! That would set her free. I expected that she would take the job and then the Chinese general would come looking for her but she is free now. Maybe he even sees that her work here is more important than coming home with him.... unlikely. :) Finally, she does decide to work with the doctor, but they ride with only Joe when a small "army" wants to kidnap her? Will the General listen, kill her or be killed? Kidnapping wouldn't properly end the story. I was thinking "Why is he still standing there after the general quickly dropped the white flag, which is surely the signal to fire... Oh, because they want Joe to get shot. Wouldn't it have been more compelling if the shot was fired as he dropped the flag and Joe was diving behind the rock? Why didn't the doctor take out the General before he could swing at Joe? He had the perfect positioning. They want Joe to be the unbelievable hero. Boring. Sure, they were following, but way back, too far to be of use. Could have had them battling the others while Joe battles the general. Perhaps that's too much concurrent action for the times. It was a strong beautiful storyline that was let down by a formulaic ending. Surely there doesn't need to be a final gunfight in every episode.
What do you think? How would you have ended it.
Wouldn't it have been far more compelling if Su Ling had joined the doctor and the final confrontation was between the general and the doctor, perhaps even the Chinese community? The doctor or other community leader could talk to the general with a shared understanding but the doctor or community leader schools the general that they are not in China anymore. The General could say that he controls his area in San Francisco. The leader replies, "Well, you're not in San Francisco either, you're in Virginia City, where all Chinese are free! Your ways are outdated and unacceptable here." The general could still decide to fight but there could be some comedy with the Cartwrights trying to fight but each time they turn to point a gun at a soldier, a local Chinese person takes him out first. At the end, the four Cartwrights all have bewildered embarrassed faces and then say something like "Well, I'm glad we could help!" as they chuckle. The doctor or community leader can then say. "You did the most important work. You showed Su Ling that she could be free."

26:19 "I want you to meet Kam Lee. He's a wonderful fellow and the best doctor in this town". But he's never been seen before in this series and never will be seen again lol.
40:50 What do they expect the general is going to do if she goes with the doctor in Virginia City? Be too afraid of the doctor and give up? It's like they all got amnesia and forgot about the general.
45:50 For a well trained army they couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag.
