Although this song is uploaded 4 years ago, it helps me alot for my grade 8 exam. Thank you Anita Malhotra for being my inspiration and guide with your upload. Your playing is just speechless and awesome.
@@anitamalhotramusic6579 Well, the exam got postponed to next year due to the COVID 19 pandemic. But i am still practicing my piece and having your upload as my reference. Thank you so much @Anita Malhotra Music
I just discovered you recently. You have a wonderful way with Joplin. I have the feeling that this is exactly what Joplin would have wanted. More please!
This is one of my favorite Joplin rags along with the 'Easy Winners' It was written to celebrate the spectacular water fountains and displays at the St Louis Worlds Fair in 1904. You can almost see the tumbling water and feel its splash in this wonderful piece.
Reading through all the comments, words fail me. It's all been said before! Try as I might, I cannot add anything else to these remarks below. Bravo! Superb! I'm in complete agreement.
This is my favorite rendition that I've heard so far. I am going to learn this rag and I'll return here to learn from this version many times I'm sure.
@@anitamalhotramusic6579 When did you discover Scott Joplin? And how? I was ten years old and I thought that wild honky-tonk piano was the thing! A friend educated me about classic ragtime being a truly refined form and that Joplin was it's chief exponent. He taught me to bring the same measure of balance and clarity to Jopin and Lamb etc, as I did to classical. How 'bout you?
@@flintlong2937 My apologies - I didn't have access to my gmail for a long time. I discovered it when I was 14 or 15, and in high school I performed the Maple Leaf Rag for some kind of school show. Are you still playing?
@@anitamalhotramusic6579 I am still playing like a manica. I will be appearing In Sedalia in May for the Scott Joplin Festival. I love this version of The Cascades SO much!
A very entertaining performance! Your left hand is super-solid. I have been having a look at this tune this evening. I learned some of it when I was about 14 years old but not really very well (I used to take on a lot of hard pieces above my level)! Now, 30 years later, I’m hoping I will be able to play it a lot better. Maybe if I get to grips with it I will upload a recording on my UA-cam channel.
HI Tim I just learned this last night from an accompanist at a conservatoire in Italy - when playing octaves use thumb and fifth finger for white notes and thumb and fourth finger for black notes - have you tried this ? good luck
Your style is wild! I'm used to more of a dynamic flow as played by other artists, but your staccato I think is more like the music is actually written. I think when I learn this piece I'll have to blend the two!
@@anitamalhotramusic6579 You played it wonderfully! I think a lot of people think of fast-paced saloon music when they hear ragtime, so they don't play it with the nuance that it was likely played during Joplin's time, and just speed through it.
hi im currently preparing this piece for my trinity grade 8 exam... so do you have any tips on playing the third section? (from 1:48) im finding it a bit hard to play all those octave jumps smoothly... thanks
Sorry - I didn't have access go my gmail for a while. I believe in slow practice (hands separate and then hands together) and gradually increasing the tempo with the use of a metronome).
Nice interpretation of this piece! I like the fact she plays it with dynamics and feeling. Ya know, so many ppl associate this style with the player pianos popular at the turn of the 20th century. While it's true that maybe the style but the player piano didn't capture the nuances of a live performer. So many folks try to play this type of music without any dynamics, no nuances etc etc. It's as though they're trying to sound like a player piano as opposed to an individual. ,
The gas fireplace in the background adds a nice, if completely irrelevant, touch. Personally I'd like to see a raucous bar crowd enjoying this but......
Aunque en cuestión de técnica está perfectamente tocada, a mi gusto esta pieza está hecha para ser tocada bastante enjundia. Siento que está muy muteada. Le hace falta más pedal, más eco de la habitación, más sonoridad, brío.
nooope, this is in that uncanny valley where pouring your own soul meets the basic tempo failure. But out of sheer respect, not gonna touch that downvote. As a player, I am very aware that this piece might as well rival the more difficult Chopin pieces. In fact, now I have to play it myself for making this rather negative comment..
@@anitamalhotramusic6579 Speed is absolutely fine, I would never dare to judge that choice as it is always up to the player. It is just the small hiccups which break continuity, flow of the piece. Such techniques are corner stone to player customization I know this but there are times they break the flow of the song for the listener. No matter, I already started learning the piece and ready to mess it up big time...
What a beautiful touch she has. She exploits the dynamics of the instrument superbly.
Thank you, Raymond.

What a wonderful rendition. Every note clean and flawless. One of the best, if not the best cascades on UA-cam.
Thanks for the compliment!
Ages searching an artist playing this as I think sounds perfect. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
Still enjoying this! Haven't heard from you in a long time. Prayers for you to be alright!
amazing and inspirational - thankyou - one thing I found hard about this piece was reading the very high notes in the right hand

Bravo !! A great and authentic performance !!

Amazing!!! So clear!! When I play this piece, I wish I could make it sound as clear as yours. ;_; My teacher says it sounds chaotic
Well, ragtime is supposed to be chaotic in some degree. It’s a branch from jazz after all. Prim and proper ragtime is just not ragtime.
Thanks. I think it was just a lot of slow practice on my part. And then speeding up gradually with the metronome.

nice smooth performance of one of the most difficult Joplin rags. Those octaves in the 3rd section are *really* hard, and you played them with élan.
